Abstract:We demonstrate a novel method to build a tunable fiber-optic delay line based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a single-mode optical fiber. The frequency of a continuous-wave lightwave served as the Brillouin probe is linearly swept to determine the location in the fiber where a pulse signal served as the Brillouin pump is reflected and thus delayed via SBS-intensified acoustic grating. The novel fiber-optic delay line has a linear tunability of more than 4 µs. The pulse distortion is also studied.

Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally demonstrate broadband Brillouin slow light using multiple equal-amplitude spectral lines generated by multifrequency phase modulation, The theoretical analysis shows that 4n-1 equal-amplitude spectral lines can be obtained if the modulation signal comprises the fundamental frequency and the odd harmonic waves, where n denotes the number of frequency components in the modulation signal. In experiment, 7 and 11 equal-amplitude spectral lines are obtained and Brillouin bandwidths of 340 and 570 MHz are gained, respectively. The experimental results also indicate that the slope of the broadening factor for the delayed signal decreases in the case of broad and flattened Brillouin gain spectrum. Abstract:A long optically controlled delay line enhanced by ring configuration is demonstrated by using the group-velocity control of signal pulses based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. In experiment, two optical fibre ring cavities are used: one is used as the Brillouin laser, providing single-mode Stokes wave as probe wave; the other is used as the Brillouin amplifier, working as slow light medium. We achieve a maximum time delay of 215 ns using the ring Brillouin amplifier, five times larger than the input probe pulse width of 40 ns. In the meantime, a considerable pulse broadening is observed, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction based on linear theory.

Abstract:Non-local effect is an important issue for a pulse-coded Brillouin optical time domain analyzer. Segmental frequency modulated probe, with a dedicated frequency step of half the natural Brillouin linewidth of the sensing fiber, is proposed to solve this issue. It can provide a wideband Brillouin gain as well as loss in the frequency band of the pump to alleviate pump distortions and thus non-local effects. This method can narrow the bit interval towards a level limited by the time of the Brillouin gain transition due to frequency switching, resulting in a bit interval as short as 900 ns for a 225 MHz frequency scanning range. A hot spot at the far fiber end is successfully detected even the probe power reaches −3 dBm under a cumulated Brillouin gain of 267.4%.

Abstract:A new tunable optical delay scheme based on real-time Fourier transformation and ramp-type phase modulation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating is adopted to implement the real-time Fourier transformation, and tunable delay is realized by changing the ramp-type modulating signal's period. Experimental results agree well with the theory. The signal distorts little after the delay, and a 18 ps delay is achieved for a 2-ps-wide optical pulse.

Abstract:A novel scheme to determine the absolute time delay of an unknown signal in a stimulated Brillouin scattering based all-optical pulse compression system is demonstrated. Optical pulse train with high repetition rate is utilized as the probe lightwave to interact the counter-propagating pump lightwave modulated by the microwave signal to be processed. The finite optical fiber length brings in insufficient interactions between pump lightwave and probe pulses. The absolute time delay of the unknown microwave signal is determined by the pulse-compressed results that are carried by these probe pulse trains. The absolute time delay is experimentally demonstrated and is theoretically analyzed. The maximum experimental error is about 7 ns for a linearly frequency modulated pulse with 1 GHz sweep range.

Abstract:We demonstrate the single and dual wavelength signals delays visa Brillouin slow light in the single mode fiber at the same time. Moreover, each wavelength delay of the signal can be also controlled by the other wavelength pump power. For single wavelength, the Width of 100ns pulse can be delayed from 0ns to 40ns by tuning the power of the pump while for dual wavelengths pump the delay time decrease to 30ns.

Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber lasers are wavelength-agile light sources for various scientific and medical applications. Pulse pumping is an efficient way to generate a high power ultrafast Raman fiber laser, which however requires real-time synchronization between the pump pulses and laser cavity. A pulse pumped Raman fiber laser with random distributed feedback is investigated. Under repetitive pulse pumping, compound cavities based on distributed Rayleigh scattering are formed automatically to synchronize with the pump pulse train. In a proof of principle experiment, self-synchronization is observed and a stable picosecond pulsed random laser is generated at 1120 nm with an average power of 170 mW. Raman gain and random distributed feedback are spatially separated in the present pulse pumped laser configuration. This allows a direct characterization of the random distributed feedback and a comparison between random lasing and amplified spontaneous emission, which is not possible in previous continuous wave pumped random Raman fiber lasers.

Abstract:A kind of high-repetition-rate distributed Brillouin sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on optical correlation-domain analysis with differential frequency modulation, where the optical frequencies of the pump and the probe waves are modulated at slightly different RFs so that the temporal position of the measurement is continuously and repeatedly swept along a fiber under test. A distribution map of Brillouin frequency variation along a 100 m optical fiber is acquired at a repetition rate of 20 Hz with an accuracy of ±2.5 MHz and a spatial resolution of about 80 cm.

Abstract:The intrinsic spectral width and intensity dynamics of the acoustic wave generated by the Brillouin random fiber laser were characterized experimentally for the first time. These are important to the understanding of the dynamic noise properties of random fiber lasers based on stimulated Brillouin scattering. We demonstrate that the spectra of the acoustic wave in the gain medium are determined by the spectral convolution of pump light and its Stokes light, which is further an influential factor on the narrow linewidth of the random fiber laser resulting from the distributed feedback of coherent Rayleigh scattering. The power of probe light is weak to ensure the minimum disturbance to the random fiber laser. In the time domain, the intensity of the reflected probe light exhibits a similar output property to that the Brillouin random fiber laser with Gaussian probability distribution when both narrow linewidth lasers (on the order of several kHz) are used as pump light and probe light. In contrast, stochastic noise features with an exponential probability distribution are introduced to the intensity dynamics of the reflected probe light when the linewidth of pump light or probe light is several MHz. The phase noise and intensity noise of the reflected probe light prove that acoustic wave generation and detection is based on a four wave mixing process, which enhances our understanding of the wave coupling in random fiber lasers and gives us a new perspective to understand the fundamental physics of the random lasing process and its noise property.

Abstract:We propose a BOTDA scheme with phase-modulated probe light and time-of- flight servo loop. For a 25-km fiber under test, a resolution of ±0.3MHz and a measurement range of 75 MHz and 0.25 seconds per measurement are achieved.

Abstract:Independent delay control of multi-channel signals based on stimulated Brillouin scattering slow light is proposed and demonstrated for the first time by using a multiple longitudinal mode fiber laser. Two independent broadband Brillouin pumps are generated by a fiber ring laser, which use a semiconductor optical amplifier as gain medium. The spectrum of each pump is comprised of a large number of longitudinal lasing modes, separated by 7 MHz and spanning a bandwidth of 11.6 and 11.2 GHz, respectively. The multi-channel broadband Brillouin slow light is demonstrated by using 8 Gb/s data signals. The signals in both channels are continuously delayed by as much as 80 ps at 21 dBm pump power, and the maximal delay-time with error free operation (bit error rate < 10(-9)) are up to 56.4 and 56 ps at 19 dBm pump power.
High-fidelity, broadband stimulated-Brillouin-scattering-based slow light using fast noise modulation

Abstract:We demonstrate a 5-GHz-broadband tunable slow-light device based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in a standard highly-nonlinear optical fiber pumped by a noise-current-modulated laser beam. The noise modulation waveform uses an optimized pseudo-random distribution of the laser drive voltage to obtain an optimal flat-topped gain profile, which minimizes the pulse distortion and maximizes pulse delay for a given pump power. Eye-diagram and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis show that this new broadband slow-light technique significantly increases the fidelity of a delayed data sequence, while maintaining the delay performance. A fractional delay of 0.81 with a SNR of 5.2 is achieved at the pump power of 350 mW using a 2-km-long highly nonlinear fiber with the fast noise-modulation method, demonstrating a 50% increase in eye-opening and a 36% increase in SNR compared to a previous slow-modulation method.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a single-longitudinal mode (SLM) narrow linewidth broadband tunable Brillouin random laser, including two segment dispersion compensated fibers (DCFs), in which enough narrowband Brillouin gain provided by a 2-km-length DCF to overcome the cavity loss, and Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) provided by a 1-km-length DCF form a mirrorless open cavity to continuously compress the laser linewidth. Compared to ordinary single mode fibers, DCF has an enhanced stimulated Brillouin scattering gain coefficient and RBS coefficient, which is attributed to its small core diameter structure, making the laser more compact and stable. Stronger random feedback effectively lowers the laser threshold, and enough Brillouin gain for multiple amplifications in random mode makes SLM operations more accessible. The proposed laser is with a threshold of ∼11 mW and an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of ∼55.75 dB, the 3-dB linewidth and linewidth compression ratio of the output laser reaches ∼550 Hz and ∼236, respectively. By changing the wavelength of the pump laser, the laser wavelength can be continuously tuned in a broad wavelength range, which is only limited by tunable range of Brillouin pump laser. The laser wavelength fluctuation of 0.02 nm and the OSNR fluctuation of about 3 dB in a 30-minute measure period, indicating that the laser is with a good stability.

Abstract:The feasibility and high delay efficiency of the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) slow light under different pump wavelengths in a high nonlinearity silica microstructure fiber (HNL–MSF) are demonstrated experimentally. Up to 14 ns time delay is achieved by the HNL–MSF under relative low pump power (∼200 mW) and short fiber length (25 m), showing that the time delay efficiency of the HNL–MSF is four times higher than that of the single mode fiber (SMF). As a result, the transit time of the signal pulse can be reduced by shortening the fiber length because of the high nonlinearity due to the small mode area, leading to an improvement of the control rate of the fiber-based SBS slow light technique. Further improvement of the control rate could be expected by combining the structure design and the fiber material selection.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-spatial-resolution fast Brillouin optical time-domain analysis scheme based on frequency agility and differential double-pulse for distributed dynamic measurement. The frequency-agility probe wave is obtained from the second-order sideband of the modulated light by using frequency-agility microwave signal from a wideband arbitrary waveform generator. The differential double-pulse technique is proposed to improve the spatial resolution while keeping the capability of dynamic measurement. In experiment, a spatial resolution of 20 cm is achieved by using a 52/50 ns differential double-pulse, and the distributed vibration measurement is demonstrated over a 50-m Panda fiber with a maximum vibration frequency of up to 50 Hz. With only five averages, the standard deviation of the strain accuracy is of 14με;.

Abstract:Slow light due to stimulated Brillouin scattering in fibers is a promising technique to realize all-optical data storage and synchronization. For delaying high-speed data, we demonstrate an approach to solve the problem of narrowband Brillouin gain by phase-modulating the Brillouin pump. The bit rate of the phase-modulating signal determines the Brillouin gain bandwidth. A 1.25-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero pseudorandom binary sequence data is delayed by 520 ps with a phase-modulated pump operating at 2.5-Gb/s bit rate. We have also observed the pattern-dependent delay and distortion of the data caused by the filtering characteristics of Brillouin amplification, and we have suppressed the distortion by detuning the carrier of the signal away from the Brillouin gain peak.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate that arbitrary bandwidth Brillouin slow light with multi-longitudinal Brillouin pump. In the experiment the multi-longitudinal laser is SOA-based fiber laser with 10-MHz mode spacing and 2-GHz bandwidth. And 500-ps delay of 1-GHz pulse is achieved with such the 400-mW multi-longitudinal Brillouin pump.

Abstract:A stabilized coherent narrow-linewidth Brillouin random fiber laser with low lasing noise is proposed and investigated experimentally, which employs stimulated Brillouin scattering and Rayleigh scattering in optical fibers to provide the gain and the random distributed feedback, respectively. The stabilized lasing output with suppressed noise is realized utilizing a simple structure of a double-coupler fiber ring resonator, which is composed of a section of single-mode fiber and two optical couplers with different coupling ratios. Compared with the existing free-running Brillouin random fiber lasers, much more stabilized laser output can be obtained as the double-coupler fiber ring resonator effectively acts as a narrow-bandwidth mode filter through the Vernier effect that constrains the dense random longitudinal modes competition within a small frequency range. In the experiment, a stable ultra-narrow linewidth of approximately 586.4 Hz is obtained from the laser output. Statistical analysis of mode hopping in the proposed laser indicates a great improvement in multi-mode resonances and frequency jitters with the imbedding of the ring resonator. In addition, measurement results of relative intensity noise and frequency noise of the proposed laser showcase a great suppression in mode-competition-induced lasing instability and a significant improvement in the noise level compared to the free-running Brillouin random fiber lasers. The proposed all-fiber-based stabilization technique makes a step forward for developing practically robust and reliable Brillouin random fiber lasers. Such a stabilized highly coherent narrow-linewidth laser source with low cost and low power consumption will find promising applications in high-resolution spectrometers, microwave photonics, and optical sensing.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate two schemes of Brillouin random fiber laser (RFL) by using high-order-mode (HOM) pump in a few-mode fiber (FMF). The core-mode conversion between LP01 and LP11 modes is obtained in the FMF by cascading long period fiber gratings (LPFG) working at the same wavelength region. Different transversal modes of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) can be implemented based on broadband long period fiber gratings (LPFG) and acoustically induced fiber gratings (AIFG). The RFL base on two broadband LPFGs can obtain high purity LP11 mode operating in the range of 1543 nm to 1565 nm. Moreover, the output mode can be dynamically switched between LP01 mode, LP11a mode and LP11b mode by modulating frequency shift keying (FSK) signal of the AIFG. This work has potential application prospects in the fields of mode division multiplexing systems, speckle-free imaging, free-space optical communication, laser material processing.
