Abstract:The measurement principles of torque and rotational speed were analysed.A virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device was presented,which can be used to measure torque and rotational speed conveniently and accurately.The methods of designing virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device were introduced.Electrorheological experiments were carried out using this device.It shows experimentally that virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device has high accuracy and good anti-jamming ability,and the operation is simple.The virtual torque and rotational speed measuring device can be put into practical applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a very-high-speed (VHS) slotless permanent-magnet motor design procedure using an analytical model. The model is used to design the optimal prototype (target: 200 kr/min, 2 kW). The multiphysics analytical model allows a quick optimization process. The presented model includes the magnetic fields, the mechanical stresses in the rotor, the electromagnetic power losses, the windage power losses, and the power losses in the bearings. VHS machines need a new torque measurement method. This paper presents the developed method. It also presents a ball bearing friction torque measurement method designed particularly for VHS machines. Remarkably, the method allowed us to design a prototype which operates beyond the target of speed and power. The results given by the model are compared with the measurements of the prototype.

Abstract:Direct measuring of mechanical torque is important for permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) testing system. However, mechanical torque is usually measured by torque meters under steady state, which increase the system cost and reduce the system reliability. In this paper, a torque measuring method for PMSM in the back-to-back testing system is introduced based on the encoder signals and the shaft torsional stiffness of the coupling and shaft. Finally, experiments are performed to verity the correctness of the proposed method. The comparison results show that the proposed method is an effective way to measure the torque value in the testing system.

Abstract:A method was developed to measure the magnetic inductance in an asynchronous motor while the mechanical load is still attached to the motor. The measurements are made as the motor speed is decreasing to quasi steady state so that the magnetic inductance is precisely calculated at no load conditions and nominal flux. The principle and methodology are given in detail with the applicable conditions. All the algorithms have been implemented on a real inverter system with the test results and simulation results both verifying the validity and feasibility of the method. The measure error is less than one percent.

Abstract:Non-intrusive, reliable and precise torque measurement is critical to dynamic performance monitoring, control and condition monitoring of rotating mechanical systems. This paper presents a novel, contactless torque measurement system consisting of two shaft-mounted zebra tapes and two optical sensors mounted on stationary rigid supports. Unlike conventional torque measurement methods, the proposed system does not require costly embedded sensors or shaft-mounted electronics. Moreover, its non-intrusive nature, adaptable design, simple installation and low cost make it suitable for a large variety of advanced engineering applications. Torque measurement is achieved by estimating the shaft twist angle through analysis of zebra tape pulse train time shifts. This paper presents and compares two signal processing methods for torque measurement: rising edge detection and cross-correlation. The performance of the proposed system has been proven experimentally under both static and variable conditions and both processing approaches show good agreement with reference measurements from an in-line, invasive torque transducer. Measurement uncertainty has been estimated according to the ISO GUM (Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement). Type A analysis of experimental data has provided an expanded uncertainty relative to the system full-scale torque of ±0.30% and ±0.86% for the rising edge and cross-correlation approaches, respectively. Statistical simulations performed by the Monte Carlo method have provided, in the worst case, an expanded uncertainty of ±1.19%.

Abstract:High speed motorized spindle has become a key functional unit of high speed machine tools and effectively promotes the development of machine tool technology. The development of higher speed and more power puts forward the stricter requirement for the performance of motorized spindle, especially the dynamic performance which affects the machining accuracy, reliability, and production efficiency. To overcome the problems of ineffective loading and dynamic performance measurement of motorized spindle, a noncontact electromagnetic loading device is developed. The cutting load can be simulated by using electromagnetic force. A new method of measuring force by force sensors is presented, and the steady and transient loading force could be measured exactly. After the high speed machine spindle is tested, the frequency response curves of the spindle relative to machine table are collected at 0~12000 rpm; then the relationships between stiffness and speeds as well as between damping ratio and speeds are obtained. The result shows that not only the static and dynamic stiffness but also the damping ratio declined with the increase of speed.

Abstract:The article considers the procedure of torque control, which is very popular in a wide variety of industries with many design features. In marine power engineering the problems of determining the forces, torque on the shaft and power are solved by means of torsiometers with torque sensors. The most widely used torque sensors are of capacitive, induction, strain gauge and photoelectric types. It has been stated that there are limitations in the process of torque control due to the susceptibility of systems to the electromagnetic interference, lack of a high degree of protection for electrical equipment and necessary recalibration. Fiber optic systems have found application in torque measurement systems in the oil and gas and aerospace industries. The use of such systems on ships is more expensive in comparison with the technologies used today, for example, the systems based on strain gauges. It has been proposed to use an inexpensive optical measuring system based on the Pound-Drever-Hall technique with using a foil-clad strain gauge and an aluminum torsion rod. There has been illustrated the system of torque control, the phase graphs for the Fabry-Perot resonator and the graph of the resonator transmission spectrum are presented, the reflection coefficient value is given. A method for measuring the phase of a reflected beam from a Fabry-Perot resonator is being considered, the injection current of a laser is modulated by means of an electric oscillator to generate side stripes in the electric field of a laser beam. The carried out studies and calculations contribute to improving the reliability of the coastal power system; the possibility of their use in marine electrical systems has been proved.

Abstract:A noncontact measurement method has been proposed for measuring the pull-out torque of micromotors in order to overcome the problem of large measurement errors due to temperature, vibration, friction and the flow of air. The principle of the proposed method was explained and the measurement precisions of rotational speed and output torque of a micromotor were analyzed in detail. Through a measurement test of a micromotor fabricated with the MEMS process, it has been verified that this method has high precision and can satisfy the requirement of micro Nm torque measurement of micromotors.

Abstract:La continua búsqueda de la mejora en los desarrollos electromecánicos impone una clara comprensión de la medición de par necesaria en cada aplicación. Las decisiones tomadas tendrán un profundo impacto en la calidad y el costo de los resultados. En este artículo se presentan los principios comúnmente empleados para el sensado de par mecánico en un eje y el porqué de la utilización extendida de las galgas extensiométricas. Se discuten la importancia en la diferenciación entre las mediciones estáticas y dinámicas, y las tecnologías actuales utilizadas en cada caso. Se describen los factores relevantes que definen a un transductor y se realiza un análisis comparativo entre ellos, para luego examinar los posibles métodos de montaje, con sus beneficios y limitaciones. Finalmente se proponen distintas soluciones de bajo costo para el diseño de la sección de medición de par y velocidad sin sacrificar el rendimiento del sistema, para diferentes bancos de ensayos para controladores de máquinas eléctricas, incluyendo la electrónica de acondicionamiento de señal necesaria. El articulo pretende ser un compendio tutorial de temas a estudiar para implementar con éxito un banco de ensayos sin dañar al transductor de par ni introducir errores de medición, ya que la información sobre esos temas está dispersa y es difícil acceder al conocimiento de los criterios de selección y procedimientos de proyecto.

Abstract:The development of new torque sensors has been one of the key issues that involve the efforts of many experts.However non-contact torque measurement device used in shaft torque detection is an important research in the last few years.Starting with the introduction of general torque measurement,the paper presents the significance of non-contact torque measurement.By analyzing the application and requirements of non-contact torque sensor,we found that the breakthrough on relevant field provides not only critical solutions for non-stop,high reliability,high-precision of dynamic torque measurement but also the control accuracy of devices measured by non-contact torque sensor.On this basis,the paper puts forward a classification of non-contact torque measurement and two key technologies:one is the using of wireless signal transmission;the other is the torque-sensitive material,which is exemplified by the newest engineering cases using the non-contacted methods to measure the torque.Finally the future development of non-contact torque measurement is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract:Affixing inverse magneto-elastic material on the CD-shaped rotor(turn plate)of ultrasonic motor is an original approach that realizes the non-contact torque measurement of rotating shaft.Due to the characteristics that ultrasonic motor produces no magnetic field,it ensures the reliability of torque measurement.CD-shaped rotor magnifies the torque in shaft,which improves torque measuring precision and range,and saves much space with the benefit of alleviating the difficulties of implanting torque measuring device inside the ultrasonic motor in the future.Experiment shows that the presented toque measuring method archieves torque measurement and variation detection with strong stability and anti-interference capability.
Precise Instantaneous Speed Detection for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel instantaneous speed detection method for permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). High detection precision is achieved by using a low resolution encoder. First, instantaneous speed and disturbance torque are estimated by a Luenberger observer based on the motion model of PMSM. Then, the estimation errors are corrected by angular position, which is obtained by synchronous sampling method (SSM) or asynchronous sampling method (ASM) according to different speed. Furthermore, in order to reduce the influence of load variation on instantaneous speed observer, load inertia is identified using the estimated values of speed and disturbance torque, and then the parameters of speed observer are adjusted according to load inertia. Compared with traditional speed observer, the method mentioned above eliminates the position detection error and delay time. So detection precision of instantaneous speed is improved largely especially in low speed region.

Abstract:High-speed electric drive units promise improved power density and, theoretically, driving range of battery electric vehicles. An essential step of the development process is extensive testing of the drive unit on a test rig. In particular, at a high rotational speed level, experimental testing can be challenging. This paper describes a test rig for investigating the overall function of a high-speed drive unit and the transmission’s efficiency and dynamics. The high-speed drive unit developed in the Speed4E research project was the reference drive unit. The test rig is based on the concept of electrical power circulation. Thus, the test rig can be used universally for different drive unit designs and operating modes. A reaction torque measurement unit was developed to enable measurements at high rotational speeds. Simultaneously, this unit allows robust measurements at low costs. The expected measurement uncertainties of torque, rotational speed, transmission efficiency, and power losses were calculated using the Monte Carlo method. The results demonstrate that the developed torque measurement unit combines precise torque measurement with a robust design and low costs, making it competitive with state-of-the-art solutions for torque measurement at high speeds.
Dynamic Compliance of Measuring Device for Force on High-speed Rotors

Abstract:High-speed rotors are often used in high-precision applications such as spindles. The force on the rotor leads to unexpected displacement and affects machining accuracy. Multi-axis force sensors are conventionally used in measuring the dynamic force on the rotor and separating electromagnetic force. However, the frequency range cannot cover high-speed applications. In this paper, a dynamic radial electromagnetic force up to 1200Hz is applied to a high-speed rotor by an electromagnetic loading device, and the reaction force is measured. Dynamic compliance and natural frequency of the measuring device is discussed, which has a great influence on the accuracy of measuring dynamic characteristics of the rotor. Firstly, a structure with higher natural frequency is proposed. Then, the dynamic compliance is analyzed by simulation and experiments. Finally, a calibration process is given to reduce the influence of the dynamic compliance. The results show that the accuracy of measurement can be improved and the frequency range of measurement increases after considering the dynamic compliance of the measuring device.

Abstract:In this study, a generalized torque estimation method is proposed for synchronous motors, including surface permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs), synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs), and interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs) for building the analytical motor model. The average motor torque is estimated using the Lorentz force by the generated flux density in the air gap to determine the relationships among torque, flux density, and injected current. In the proposed method, the generated flux density is derived step by step by considering the effects of magnetic flux saturation, the stator slot, the rotor barrier, and permanent magnets (PMs) to ensure that the generated average torque complies with the operating condition of the motor. To verify the proposed method, the output torque of finite element analysis (FEA), Maxwell 2D, is compared to the proposed method in a SPMSM. Moreover, a phasor diagram is plotted to determine the mechanism through which torque is generated in SynRMs and IPMSMs. A SynRM and an IPMSM with ferrites PMs are analyzed using the proposed method, FEA, and the experimental results of this study indicate the effectiveness.

Abstract:Compact, ultra-high-speed self-bearing permanent-magnet motors enable a wide scope of applications including an increasing number of optical ones. For implementation in an optical setup the rotors have to satisfy high demands regarding their velocity and pointing errors. Only a restricted number of measurements of these parameters exist and only at relatively low velocities. This manuscript presents the measurement of the velocity and pointing errors at rotation frequencies up to 5 kHz. The acquired data allows to identify the rotor drive as the main source of velocity variations with fast fluctuations of up to 3.4 ns (RMS) and slow drifts of 23 ns (RMS) over ~120 revolutions at 5 kHz in vacuum. At the same rotation frequency the pointing fluctuated by 12 $\mu$rad (RMS) and 33 $\mu$rad (peak-to-peak) over ~10000 roundtrips. To our best knowledge this states the first measurement of velocity and pointing errors at multi-kHz rotation frequencies and will allow potential adopters to evaluate the feasibility of such rotor drives for their application.
