Abstract:The energy paradigms in many countries (e.g. Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change from fossil-based resources to clean renewables in the past few decades. The scenario of highly penetrated renewables is going to be further enhanced. This requires that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technological efficient as possible and incentives to save energy at the end-user should also be strengthened. In order to realize the transition smoothly and effectively, energy conversion systems, currently based on power electronics technology, will again play an essential role. Using highly efficient power electronics in power generation, power transmission/distribution and end-user application, together with advanced control solutions, can pave the way for renewable energies. In view of this, some of the most emerging renewable energies, e.g. wind energy and photovoltaic, which by means of power electronics are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation, are explored in this paper. Issues like technology development, implementation, power converter technologies, control of the systems, and synchronization are addressed. Special focuses are paid on the future trends in power electronics for those systems.

Abstract:Future power grids face various challenges due to a rapidly increasing share of renewable energy resources and increasing interplay with other energy sectors. Distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind, solar, energy storage, combined heat and power plants, electric vehicles, and smart loads become prevalent. As shown in Figure 1, it has become an inevitable choice for the energy revolution to develop an integrated energy system that realizes the deep integration of new technologies with distributed energy and diversifies (cold, heat, electricity, gas, etc.) demand. Besides, we are moving towards an integrated energy system on an unprecedented scale. In the continuous development of integrated energy systems, the elements of participation and interaction are becoming more complex. The integration of variable sources and the efficient and synergistic utilization of these energies will be a key focus in the future development. This issue contains ten research articles focusing on modeling and analysis methods for IES, advanced technologies for DERs and microgrid, active distribution network, impact of DERs interconnection on the distribution network, etc. The paper by Cao et al. proposed the concept of shared ESS (Shared-ESS) for microgrid owner/ operator and applied it to the economic optimal dispatch of a microgrid cluster. The microgrids can achieve the peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction among each other with the use of the Shared-ESS, which significantly improves the energy utilization efficiency. The numerical analysis shows that the Shared-ESS can significantly reduce the energy bills of microgrid owner/operator, shift the usage of energy during peak time, and facilitate the renewable energy consumption. The orderly deregulation of planned electricity generation and consumption is an important measure for electricity market reform in several countries. Under the plan-market double-track mechanism (PMDM) implemented, a modified linear bidding function of generation companies was first proposed by He et al., and the unified clearing price of unilateral generation market is determined accordingly. Simulations based on data from a provincial electricity market in China illustrate that the market power can be reduced through a reasonable proportion of planned electricity designed by the power exchange. The paper by Chen et al. discusses a passive sliding mode control strategy of MMC-UPFC to achieve the advantages of both the passive controller and sliding mode controller. An unbalanced grid treatment strategy is also presented with the series side of MMC-UPFC. Abstract:Continuously expanding deployments of distributed power-generation systems (DPGSs) are transforming the conventional centralized power grid into a mixed distributed electrical network. The modern power grid requires flexible energy utilization but presents challenges in the case of a high penetration degree of renewable energy, among which wind and solar photovoltaics are typical sources. The integration level of the DPGS into the grid plays a critical role in developing sustainable and resilient power systems, especially with highly intermittent renewable energy resources. To address the challenging issues and, more importantly, to leverage the energy generation, stringent demands from both utility operators and consumers have been imposed on the DPGS. Furthermore, as the core of energy conversion, numerous power electronic converters employing advanced control techniques have been developed for the DPGS to consolidate the integration. In light of the above, this paper reviews the power-conversion and control technologies used for DPGSs. The impacts of the DPGS on the distributed grid are also examined, and more importantly, strategies for enhancing the connection and protection of the DPGS are discussed.

Abstract:The markedly increased integration of renewable energy in the power grid is of significance in the transition to a sustainable energy future. The grid integration of renewables will be continuously enhanced in the future. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), renewable technology is the main pathway to reach zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2060. Power electronics have played and will continue to play a significant role in this energy transition by providing efficient electrical energy conversion, distribution, transmission, and utilization. Consequently, the development of power electronics technologies, i.e., new semiconductor devices, flexible converters, and advanced control schemes, is promoted extensively across the globe. Among various renewables, wind energy and photovoltaic (PV) are the most widely used, and accordingly these are explored in this paper to demonstrate the role of power electronics. The development of renewable energies and the demands of power electronics are reviewed first. Then, the power conversion and control technologies as well as grid codes for wind and PV systems are discussed. Future trends in terms of power semiconductors, reliability, advanced control, grid-forming operation, and security issues for largescale grid integration of renewables, and intelligent and full user engagement are presented at the end.

Abstract:With the revolution of renewable energy, the power system is being more complicated and integrated with more and more power electronics, which is referred to as the “power electronized” power system. In this case, the analysis, control, and operation of the entire power system should tone with the energy-paradigm transition pace. This paper thus explores challenges in power electronized power systems and highlights the stability issue. It serves to spark inspiration on potential solutions to these issues. As one of the solutions to cope with the interconnection of power converters with multi-synchronous generator systems, the virtual inertia concept is discussed in this paper. The impact of highly aggregated power electronic-based power systems is presented. More importantly, prospective solutions considering multiple timescales for the enhancement of power electronized power systems are briefed. A case study is exemplified in this paper to further highlight the analysis and discussion.

Abstract:This manuscript presents a comprehensive review of recent advancements in electrical distribution networks, with a specific focus on the incorporation of direct current (DC) applications. The research aims to comprehensively address the current and future aspects of DC, spanning from the distribution level to the utilization level. The renewed interest in DC power systems has led to the investigation of several transitional challenges in recent years. A significant portion of these efforts has been dedicated to determining the feasibility of applying DC to specific use cases. Additionally, the literature has explored design considerations such as system architecture and voltage levels, the integration of DC into existing distribution networks, load flow (LF) computations, and the distinct safety concerns associated with DC power systems. In this paper, the various research endeavors are categorized, evaluated, and scrutinized to assess the current state of the transition from a purely alternating current (AC) distribution system to a solely DC or hybrid AC/DC distribution system. A bibliometric analysis is conducted, constructing a network of co-occurrence based on author-provided keywords, which reveals the primary research foci in this domain. The barriers hindering the widespread adoption of DC distribution systems and potential solutions are also discussed. Moreover, this article synthesizes ongoing efforts to address these obstacles and delineates future research directions by emphasizing the existing knowledge gaps.

Abstract:In today's world, there is a continuous global need for more energy which, at the same time, has to be cleaner than the energy produced from the traditional generation technologies. This need has facilitated the increasing penetration of distributed generation (DG) technologies and primarily of renewable energy sources (RES). The extensive use of such energy sources in today's electricity networks can indisputably minimize the threat of global warming and climate change. However, the power output of these energy sources is not as reliable and as easy to adjust to changing demand cycles as the output from the traditional power sources. This disadvantage can only be effectively overcome by the storing of the excess power produced by DG-RES. Therefore, in order for these new sources to become completely reliable as primary sources of energy, energy storage is a crucial factor. In this work, an overview of the current and future energy storage technologies used for electric power applications is carried out. Most of the technologies are in use today while others are still under intensive research and development. A comparison between the various technologies is presented in terms of the most important technological characteristics of each technology. The comparison shows that each storage technology is different in terms of its ideal network application environment and energy storage scale. This means that in order to achieve optimum results, the unique network environment and the specifications of the storage device have to be studied thoroughly, before a decision for the ideal storage technology to be selected is taken.

Abstract:Data centers consume about 2% of the world’s electricity with continuing growth. The power supply system plays a significant role in the energy saving and decarbonization of data centers. The development of power electronics brings opportunities for more efficient and reliable data centers. This article presents an overview of the data center power supply system covering the power delivery path from the grid edge to onboard point-of-load (PoL) conversion. The system architectures are introduced at first with the discussion on efficiency and reliably. The power conversion stages of data center power supply system are discussed as ac–dc conversions and dc–dc conversions. The state-of-the-art techniques in topology, control, and device are investigated. This article is an attempt to provide an overview for high-performance data center power supply system design.

Abstract:Today fossil energy dominates energy consumption across the world. There has been an increasing momentum to reduce fossil energy consumption and increase renewable energy utilization to more than 70%. Such high penetrations of distributed renewable resources bring large uncertainty and complexity that cannot be easily handled by the current infrastructure. For the last two decades, telecommunication industry has gone through a similar transition from centralized to distributed systems, and more recently to platform approaches, which become the corner stone of today's vibrant platform economy. Based on telecommunication history, we believe that a platform-based approach, called the energy platform, is a viable solution for addressing the renewable energy challenges. The energy platform consists of an array of computational algorithms, sensing and control technologies for key industry, energy generators and users to jointly manage and control the complex energy infrastructure. It includes the following key components: (1) the hardware and software to generate, store, control and transmit electricity/data (the energy cloud), (2) the digital platforms and tools for key energy producers, digital, service and communication industry to share the assets, participate in and manage the complex infrastructure, and for customers to participate in energy transaction, (3) the transaction platform for new service and business models. The energy platform also requires breakthroughs in large scale energy storage and many other areas including efficient power electronics, sensors and controls, new mathematical and computational tools, and deep integration of energy technologies and information sciences to control and stabilize such complex chaotic systems.

Abstract:Abstract In the coming decades, electricity's share of total global energy is expected to continue to grow, I and more intelligent processes will be introduced into the electric power delivery (transmission and distribution) networks. It is envisioned that the electric power grid will move from an electromechanically controlled system to an electronically controlled network in the next two decades. A key challenge is how to redesign, retrofit, and upgrade the existing electromechanically controlled system into a smart self-healing grid that is driven by a well-designed market approach. Revolutionary developments in both information technology and materials science and engineering promise significant improvements in the security, reliability, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of electric power delivery systems. Focus areas in materials and devices include sensors, smart materials and structures, microfabrication, nanotechnology, advanced materials, and smart devices.

Abstract:The future power system will be the integration of multiple energy systems, cyber-physical system, and multiple markets. This paper presents an architecture of energy-discretized multi-energy microgrids. This architecture can achieve the point-to-point (P2P)transmission of discrete energy with the physical system level, which solves the problem of energy flow tracking and measurement. In this architecture, the real-time transaction-and-control-combined mechanism can ensure the dynamic and fully customized energy supply. This paper draws the architecture of a new generation of energy supply system, and may provide an idea for the integration of energy, information, and value in energy supply system.

Abstract:Vigorously developing renewable energy generation is an effective way to tackle the challenges of energy crisis and air pollution.High proportion of renewable energy integration will be one of the basic characteristics of future power systems.This paper summarizes a number of key issues for power systems with a high proportion of renewable energy generation from two aspects: the power system planning and operation under high level uncertainty and the stability mechanism of power system with massive integration of power electronic devices.On this basis, a theoretical research framework is proposed by dividing the above two scientific issues into five sub-problems: the evolution of power system structure and its forecasting model;a multi-objective planning method for AC/DC transmission network with a high proportion of renewable energy generation;the distribution system planning with a high proportion of renewable energy generation;the stability analysis of power electronics dominated power systems;the cooperative optimal operation theory of AC-DC hybrid power system with a high proportion of renewable energy generation.The relationship among the five sub-problems is described.Finally, key technologies for future power systems with a high proportion of renewable energy generation are provided and prospected.

Abstract:Energy storage systems provide viable solutions for improving efficiency and power quality as well as reliability issues in dc/ac power systems including power grid with considerable penetrations of renewable energy. The storage systems are also essential for aircraft powertrains, shipboard power systems, electric vehicles, and hybrid electric vehicles to meet the peak load economically and improve the systems reliability and efficiency. Significant development and research efforts have recently been made in high-power storage technologies such as supercapacitors, superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES), and flywheels. These devices have a very high-power density and fast response time and are suitable for applications with rapid charge and discharge requirements. In this paper, the latest technological developments of these devices as well as advancements in the lithium-ion battery, the most power dense commercially available battery, are presented. Also, a comparative analysis of these high-power storage technologies in terms of power, energy, cost, life, and performance is carried out. This paper also presents the applications, advantages, and limitations of these technologies in a power grid and transportation system as well as critical and pulse loads.
