Abstract:Two-dimensional graphene monolayers and bilayers exhibit fascinating electrical transport behaviors. Using infrared spectroscopy, we find that they also have strong interband transitions and that their optical transitions can be substantially modified through electrical gating, much like electrical transport in field-effect transistors. This gate dependence of interband transitions adds a valuable dimension for optically probing graphene band structure. For a graphene monolayer, it yields directly the linear band dispersion of Dirac fermions, whereas in a bilayer, it reveals a dominating van Hove singularity arising from interlayer coupling. The strong and layer-dependent optical transitions of graphene and the tunability by simple electrical gating hold promise for new applications in infrared optics and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Infrared spectroscopy reveals unusual tunable electronic structure and optical behaviour in electrically gated bilayer graphene. In a dual-gate bilayer graphene device, we were able to control the carrier doping and a semiconductor bandgap independently by using different combinations of the top and bottom gate voltages. The field-induced bandgap can be probed directly through the emerging interband transitions in infrared absorption spectra. A tunable bandgap up to 250 meV has been observed in our dual-gate bilayer graphene devices. This unique tunable bandgap can lead to many new physical phenomena. One example is an unusual phonon-exciton Fano resonance when the electronic bandgap is tuned to match the phonon vibration energy. Here (continuous) electron-hole transitions and (discrete) phonon vibrations form a coupled system described by the Fano resonance, and the infrared absorption spectra exhibit characteristics quantum interference between the phonon and exciton transitions. Remarkably, this coupled phonon-exciton Fano resonance can be continuously tuned through electrical gating in bilayer graphene, and its behaviour is described quantitative by theory. Infrared spectroscopy of phase transitions in the lowest Landau levels of bilayer graphene

Abstract:We perform infrared magneto-spectroscopy of Landau level (LL) transitions in dual-gated bilayer graphene. At $\nu=4$ when the zeroth LL (octet) is filled, two resonances are observed indicating the opening of a gap. At $\nu=0$ when the octet is half-filled, multiple resonances disperse non-monotonically with increasing displacement field, $D$, perpendicular to the sheet, showing a phase transition at modest displacement fields from a canted anti-ferromagnet (CAFM) to the layer-polarized state, with a gap that opens linearly in $D$. When $D=0$ and $\nu$ is varied, resonances at $\pm\nu$ show an electron-hole asymmetry with multiple line splittings as the octet is progressively filled. The $\nu=4$ data show good agreement with predictions from a mean-field Hartree-Fock calculation when accounting for multiple tight-binding terms in a four-band model of bilayer graphene. However even by incorporating a valley interaction anisotropy tuned to the CAFM ground state, only partial agreement is found at $\nu=0$. Our results suggest additional physics is required to understand bilayer graphene at half-filling.

Abstract:The optical conductivity of graphene monolayer and multilayers are theoretically studied taking into account of the full dispersion, yielding results that are valid up to the ultraviolet region. Compared to the optical conductivity of monolayer graphene, extra peak structures appear in both the infrared and ultraviolet frequency regions for the multilayer case, which is understood as a combined effect of van Hove singularities in the energy band structures and optical transition selection rules. The number of ultraviolet peaks is equal to the number of layers. The number of infrared peaks in an even-layered graphene is equal to one half of the layer number. In odd-layered graphene, due to the existence of a monolayer-like subband, the number of infrared peaks is equal to that in the corresponding even-layered graphene with one layer less.

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures integrated by stacking of different two-dimensional (2D) materials have demonstrated their great potential for various applications, especially for the next-generation optoelectronic devices due to their new physics and exceptional properties in the past years. However, the specific influence of interlayer coupling on electronic structure and photoelectric properties is of great significance but rarely studied with an experimental and effective method. Here we firstly analyze the optical parameters of graphene/MoS2 vdW heterostructure by a fast and non-destructive characterization technique, spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). The Lorentz oscillators modeling dispersion relations and effective medium approximation layer fit well with the SE measured data. The yielded refractive index and extinction coefficient of graphene/MoS2 vdW heterostructure were confirmed and compared to investigate their optical properties and interface interactions. These results provide a fundamental understanding on the optical parameters and interlayer coupling of graphene/MoS2 vdW heterostructure, which could promote the further research of various vdW heterostructures and future development for use in optoelectronics.

Abstract:We study the optical transmittance of multilayer graphene films up to 65 layers thick. By combing large-scale tight-binding simulation and optical measurement on CVD multilayer graphene, the optical transmission through graphene films in the visible region is found to be solely determined by the number of graphene layers. We argue that the optical transmittance measurement is more reliable in the determination of the number of layers than the commonly used the Raman spectroscopy. Moreover, the optical transmittance measurement can be applied also to other 2D materials with weak van der Waals interlayer interaction. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

Abstract:The binding energy of the ground and first excited states of a hydrogen-like impurity electron in monolayer graphene is studied by a variational approach. It is shown that the binding energies of the impurity electron can be tuned by changing the value of the gap and the effective fine structure constant. An analytical expression for the dipole matrix element of the electron transition from the ground to the first excited state of a hydrogen-like impurity in graphene is found.

Abstract:Excitons, the bound states of an electron and a hole in a solid material, play a key role in the optical properties of insulators and semiconductors. Here, we report the observation of excitons in bilayer graphene (BLG) using photocurrent spectroscopy of high-quality BLG encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride. We observed two prominent excitonic resonances with narrow line widths that are tunable from the mid-infrared to the terahertz range. These excitons obey optical selection rules distinct from those in conventional semiconductors and feature an electron pseudospin winding number of 2. An external magnetic field induces a large splitting of the valley excitons, corresponding to a g -factor of about 20. These findings open up opportunities to explore exciton physics with pseudospin texture in electrically tunable graphene systems.

Abstract:The electronic structure and optical properties of hexagonal armchair and zigzag-edged graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are investigated within the framework of many-body perturbation theory. Many-body effects are significant due to quantum confinement and reduced screening. The quasi-particle corrections and exciton binding energies can be several eV, much larger than those of other carbon allotropes with higher dimensionality. All the GQDs show similar absorption spectra when electronhole interaction is included, with a prominent peak emerging below the absorption onset of the noninteracting spectrum. This peak is contributed by a pair of double-degenerate excited states originating from the transitions between degenerate frontier orbitals. The spin singlet-triplet splitting is closely related to the electronhole overlap, which can be approximately measured by the overlap between frontier orbitals involved in the optical transitions. The strong many-body effects in GQDs should be of great importance in optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Selection rules are of vital importance in determining the basic optical properties of atoms, molecules and semiconductors. They provide general insights into the symmetry of the system and the nature of relevant electronic states. A two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field is a model system where optical transitions between Landau levels (LLs) are described by simple selection rules associated with the LL index N. Here we examine the inter-LL optical transitions of high-quality bilayer graphene by photocurrent spectroscopy measurement. We observed valley-dependent optical transitions that violate the conventional selection rules Delta|N|=1. Moreover, we can tune the relative oscillator strength by tuning the bilayer graphene bandgap. Our findings provide insights into the interplay between magnetic field, band structure and many-body interactions in tunable semiconductor systems, and the experimental technique can be generalized to study symmetry-broken states and low energy magneto-optical properties of other nano and quantum materials. p id=Par Optical transitions between Landau levels (LL) in solids are described by selection rules associated with the LL index. Abstract:The interlayer twist angle is an important parameter that can tune the physical properties of graphene in a wide wavelength range. In this paper, we employ an effective continuum model to calculate the band structure of twisted bilayer graphene with different twist angles in the presence and absence of vertical electric field. Based on the transition rate of the electron-photon interaction, we calculate and simulate the optical absorption spectra caused by the interband and intraband transitions around the van Hove singularities. The calculation results show that the optical absorption caused by the interband transitions occurs in the wavelength range from visible light to near-infrared while it appears in far-infrared for intraband transitions. The optical absorption coefficient of the intra-band transitions is almost two orders of magnitude larger than that of inter-band transitions. In the absence of an external electric field, as the twist angle increases, the absorption peak of the inter band transition moves from the infrared light band to the visible light band, but the resonant peak position of its intra-band transition does not change. At the same time, the absorption coefficient values corresponding to the above two transitions will increase. When an electric field is applied perpendicular to the twisted bilayer graphene, the symmetry of the initial band structure of bilayer graphene is destroyed, which results in the splitting of the absorption peaks associated the with interband transitions, and the distance between the two splitting peaks increases with the electric field intensity increasing; while the position and amplitude of the absorption peak associated with the intraband transition are completely unaffected by the applied electric field. The theoretical calculation results in this paper can provide the theoretical guidance for further applying twisted graphene to optoelectronic devices such as tunable dual-band filters.

Abstract:Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) represents a highly tunable, strongly correlated electron system owed to its unique flat electronic bands. However, understanding the single-particle band structure alone has been challenging due to complex lattice reconstruction effects and a lack of spectroscopic measurements over a broad energy range. Here, we probe the band structure of TBG around the magic angle using infrared spectroscopy. Our measurements reveal spectral features originating from interband transitions whose energies are uniquely defined by the twist angle. By combining with quantum transport, we connect spectral features over a broad energy range (10 to 700 meV) spanning several superlattice minibands and track their evolution with twist angle. We compare our data with calculations of the band structures obtained via the continuum model and find good agreement only when considering a variation of interlayer/intralayer tunnelling parameters with the twist angle. Our analysis suggests that the magic angle also shifts due to lattice relaxation, and is better defined for a wide angular range from 0.9° to 1.1°. Our work provides spectroscopic insights into TBG's band structure and offers an optical fingerprint of the magic angle for screening heterostructures before nanofabrication.

Abstract:This study explores the stacking transitions in twisted bilayer graphene on an h‐BN substrate using Raman spectroscopy. By analyzing intralayer and interlayer processes, we demonstrate how postannealing can modulate electron–phonon interactions. These findings reveal spatially dependent changes in the stacking, offering pathways to modify the electronic band structure and optoelectronic properties of graphene. In this paper, we investigate a twisted bilayer graphene on an h‐BN substrate. The graphene is grown using high‐quality chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and subsequently transferred onto the h‐BN substrate. Our focus is on the stacking transition within the bilayer system, based on fluctuations in both intralayer and interlayer processes. Our findings reveal that post‐annealing induces alterations in the electron–phonon interaction, corresponding to the spatially dependent stacking changes in the bilayer structure. This makes it possible to modify the electronic band structure of graphene and subsequently all its optoelectronic properties.

Abstract:The optical properties of chemical vapor deposition grown graphene were measured with high accuracy by spectroscopy ellipsometry in the energy range of 0.7 eV-9.0 eV, which is spectrally broader compared with those reported in literature. The refractive index (n) and extinction coefficient (k) of graphene were accurately obtained and compared with directly measured transmittance data. The absorption of graphene follows the well-known fine structure constant in the visible range, becomes lower below 1 eV, and shows a strong absorption peak around 4.8 eV. The latter was attributed to the resonant excitons near the van Hove singularity at the M point of the Brillouin zone. A higher energy absorption peak was observed at 6.4 eV resulting from the excitonic effect of the sigma-to-sigma* transition at the Gamma point of the Brillouin zone. The multi-layer graphene, fabricated by repeated transfer, exhibit similar optical properties to mono-layer graphene and the 4.8 eV absorption peak exhibits a layer-number dependent peak shift, similar to the exfoliated AB-stacked multi-layer graphene. The broadband optical properties reported in this letter are believed to enhance the understanding of the optical properties of graphene and will benefit the development of graphene-based optoelectronic devices. Abstract:We study theoretically optical properties of a graphene monolayer supported on subwavelength dielectric gratings (SWDGs) using a scattering-matrix method. It is found that due to the formation of band structure of graphene plasmons (GPs) on the SWDG, optical excitations of GPs can be controlled by GP bands above the light line, resulting in optical absorption enhancement in graphene. In particular, very flat GP bands can exist above the light line at midinfrared frequencies. As a result, high optical absorption in graphene can be realized over a wide angular range at these flat bands when using a metallic substrate. Our results could find applications in graphene-based opto-electronics.

Abstract:The inter-band optical absorption in graphene characterized by its fine-structure constant has a universal value of 2.3\% independent of the material parameters. However, for several graphene-based photonic applications, enhanced optical absorption in graphene is highly desired. In this work, we quantify the tunability of optical absorption in graphene via the Fermi level in graphene, angle of incidence of the incident polarized light, and the dielectric constant of the surrounding dielectric media in which graphene is embedded. The influence of impurities adsorbed on the surface of graphene on the Lorentzian broadening of the spectral function of the density of states is analytically evaluated within the equilibrium Green's function formalism. Finally, we compute the differential absorption of right and left circularly-polarized light in graphene that is uniaxially and optically strained. The preferential absorption or circular dichroism is investigated for armchair and zigzag strain.
