Abstract:By virtue of a silicon high-Q photonic crystal nanocavity, we propose and examine theoretically interactions between a stationary electron spin qubit of a semiconductor nanocrystal and a flying photon qubit. Firstly, we introduce, derive and demonstrate for the first time the explicit conditions towards realization of a spin-photon two-qubit phase gate, and propose these interactions as a generalized quantum interface for quantum information processing. Secondly, we examine novel single-spin-induced reflections as direct evidence of intrinsic bare and dressed modes in our coupled nanocrystal-cavity system. The excellent physical integration of this silicon system provides tremendous potential for large-scale quantum information processing.

Abstract:Recent Optical and Photonic Technologies 90 (two atoms plus one cavity mode), Schrödinger cat state (Brune et al., 1996), and singlephoton state (Brattke et al., 2001) of a cavity field.However, FP-type microcavities have their inherent problems.For example, it is extremely difficult to realize a scalable quantum computation in experiment by integrating many microcavities, though theoretical protocols may be simple and elegant.Recently, whispering gallery microcavities have been studied for cavity QED toward quantum information processing (Xiao et al., 2006) due to their ultrahigh quality factors (Q, which is proportional to the confinement time in units of the optical period) and high physical scalability.Strong-coupling regime has been demonstrated when cold caesium atoms fall through the external evanescent field of a whispering gallery mode.Nevertheless, the cold atoms are ideal stationery qubits (quantum bits), but not suited for good flying qubits.Thus, a solid-state cavity QED (involved single quantum dot (QD), for example) system with whispering gallery microcavities seeks further advancements.As a new resonant configuration, nanocavities in photonic crystal with high quality factors (Q) and ultrasmall mode volumes (V) are attracting increasing attention in the context of optical cavity QED (Faraon et al.,

Abstract:The spin of a single electron or hole trapped inside a quantum dot offers a promising quantum memory. These qubits are embedded in a host semiconductor material that can be directly patterned to form compact integrated nanophotonic devices. These devices efficiently interconnect single solid-state qubits with photons, a crucial requirement for quantum networks, quantum repeaters, and photonic quantum computation. This chapter reviews recent experimental progress towards achieving strong spin-photon interactions based on coupled quantum dot and nanophotonic cavity system. Especially we introduce a recent work that reports a coherent spin-photon quantum switch operating at the fundamental quantum limit, where a single photon flips the orientation of a quantum dot spin and the spin flips the polarization of the photon. These strong spin-photon interactions open up a promising direction for solid-state implementations of high-speed quantum networks and on-chip quantum photonic circuits using nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:In this paper, a scalable photonic crystal cavity array, in which single embedded quantum dots (QDs) are coherently interacting, is studied theoretically. Firstly, we examine the spectral character and optical delay brought about by the coupled cavities interacting with single QDs, in an optical analogue to electromagnetically induced transparency. Secondly, we then examine the usability of this coupled QD-cavity system for quantum phase gate operation and our numerical examples suggest that a two-qubit system with fidelity above 0.99 and photon loss below 0.04 is possible.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.
Quantum State Control in Single Quantum Dots and the Coupling with Photonic Crystal Cavities (conference Presentation)

Abstract:To implement solid-state quantum information processing, precision control of quantum states in single quantum dots including charges, spins and wavefunctions are highly desirable. For a single quantum dot based photocurrent device, single hole spins were initialized with a high fidelity by controlling carrier tunneling rates with a resonant excitation, The tunneling rates are tuned by controlling the wavefunciton spread with an external magnetic field. In addition, many-body exciton states in a coupled system with a single self-assembled quantum dot and a wetting layer are observed by strong anomalous diamagnetic shifts. A tremendous positive diamagnetic coefficient is observed when an electron in the wetting layer combines with a hole in quantum dot, which is nearly one order of magnitude larger than that of the excitonic states confined in quantum dots. When the electrons recombine with holes within quantum dot in the coupled system, a peculiar negative diamagnetic effect is observed. To scale up the quantum dot-based quantum photonic network, photonic crystal cavities with high quality factors around 10000 are fabricated with single quantum dots located in antinode position of the cavity. Selective spin enhancement from single quantum dots in the cavity are observed for each branch in Zeeman splitting because of the Purcell effect, particularly can be precisely controlled with a vector magnetic field. Strong coupling for cavity QED between different excitonic states in a single quantum dot and the cavity will be presented, which has potential applications in realizing quantum nodes for quantum photonic network.

Abstract:Quantum computing offers the potential to revolutionize information processing by exploiting the principles of quantum mechanics. Among the diverse quantum bit (qubit) technologies, silicon-based semiconductor spin qubits have emerged as a promising contender due to their potential scalability and compatibility with existing semiconductor technologies. In this paper, the latest developments of spin qubits in gate-defined semiconducting nanostructures made of silicon and germanium, starting from the basic properties of electron and hole states in group-IV semiconductors, are reviewed. Specifically, various nanostructures that exploit their unique microscopic properties for qubit implementations, elaborating on the advances and challenges in experiments, are discussed. Strategies for enhancing qubit performance, such as designing new nanostructures and identifying suitable operating points, particularly those involving the valleys of electron qubits and the heavy-hole-light-hole mixing of hole qubits, are also highlighted. This comprehensive review thus provides valuable insights into the current state-of-the-art in semiconductor quantum computing and suggests avenues for future research. Silicon-based spin quantum bits (qubits) have emerged as a promising platform for large-scale quantum computing due to their compatibility with the semiconductor fabrication technology. Abstract:Atom-like defects or color centers (CC's) in nanostructured diamond are a leading platform for optically linked quantum technologies, with recent advances including memory-enhanced quantum communication, multi-node quantum networks, and spin-mediated generation of photonic cluster states. Scaling to practically useful applications motivates architectures meeting the following criteria: C1 individual optical addressing of spin qubits; C2 frequency tuning of CC spin-dependent optical transitions; C3 coherent spin control in CC ground states; C4 active photon routing; C5 scalable manufacturability; and C6 low on-chip power dissipation for cryogenic operations. However, no architecture meeting C1-C6 has thus far been demonstrated. Here, we introduce a hybrid quantum system-on-chip (HQ-SoC) architecture that simultaneously achieves C1-C6. Key to this advance is the realization of piezoelectric strain control of diamond waveguide-coupled tin vacancy centers to meet C2 and C3, with ultra-low power dissipation necessary for C6. The DC response of our device allows emitter transition tuning by over 20 GHz, while the large frequency range (exceeding 2 GHz) enables low-power AC control. We show acoustic manipulation of integrated tin vacancy spins and estimate single-phonon coupling rates over 1 kHz in the resolved sideband regime. Combined with high-speed optical routing with negligible static hold power, this HQ-SoC platform opens the path to scalable single-qubit control with optically mediated entangling gates.

The interface is based on a 220-nm-thick GaAs/(Al,Ga)As heterostructure membrane and consists of a gate-defined double quantum dot (GDQD) supporting a singlet-triplet qubit, an optically active quantum dot (OAQD) consisting of a gate-defined exciton trap, a photonic crystal cavity providing in-plane optical confinement, efficient outcoupling to an ideal free-space Gaussian beam while accommodating the gate wiring of the GDQD and OAQD, and a bottom gold reflector to recycle photons and increase the optical extraction efficiency. All the essential components can be lithographically defined and deterministically fabricated on the GaAs/(Al,Ga)As heterostructure membrane, which greatly increases the scalability of on-chip integration. According to our simulations, the interface provides an overall coupling efficiency of 28.7% into a free-space Gaussian beam, assuming a SiO2 interlayer fills the space between the reflector and the membrane. Abstract:The realization of photonic crystals (PC) in diamond is of major importance for the entire field of spintronics based on fluorescent centers in diamond. The processing steps for the case of diamond differ from those commonly used, due to the extreme chemical and mechanical properties of this material. The present work summarizes the state of the art in the realization of PC's in diamond. It is based on the creation of a free standing diamond membrane into which the desired nano-sized patterns are milled by the use of Focused-Ion-Beam (FIB). The optimal fabrication-oriented structure parameters are predicted by simulations. The milling strategies, the method of formation the diamond membrane, recipes for dielectric material-manipulation in FIB and optical characterization constraints are discussed in conjunction with their implication on PC cavity design. The thus produced structures are characterized via confocal photoluminescence.

Abstract:Quantum emitters are a key component in photonic quantum technologies. Enhancing their single-photon emission by engineering the photonic environment using cavities can significantly improve the overall efficiency in quantum information processing. However, this enhancement is often constrained by the need for precise nanoscale control over the emitter's position within micro- or nano-cavities. Inspired by the fascinating physics of moiré patterns, we present an approach to strongly modify the spontaneous emission rate of a quantum emitter using a finely designed multilayer moiré photonic crystal with a robust isolated-flatband dispersion. Theoretical analysis reveals that, due to its nearly infinite photonic density of states, the moiré cavity can simultaneously achieve a high Purcell factor and exhibit large tolerance over the emitter's position. We experimentally demonstrate the coupling between this moiré cavity and a quantum dot through the cavity-determined polarization of the dot's emission. The radiative lifetime of the quantum dot can be tuned by a factor of 40, ranging from 42 ps to 1692 ps, which is attributed to strong Purcell enhancement and Purcell inhibition effects. Our findings pave the way for moiré flatband cavity-enhanced quantum light sources, quantum optical switches, and quantum nodes for quantum internet applications.

Chiral Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics with Coupled Nanophotonic Structures

Abstract:Up to now it remains challenging to couple photons from a circularly polarized emitter into a photonic structure to simultaneously realize strong photon-emitter interaction and unidirectional propagation locked by local helicity of the optical mode at the nanoscale. In this paper we propose a unique approach that combines a photonic crystal and metallic nanoparticle structure to create nanocavities with both strong local-field intensity and high helicity. In this system the rate of circularly polarized photons emitting into the photonic crystal waveguide reaches 148(gamma 0), which is one order of magnitude larger than that without the nanoparticle, and in the ultranarrow band-edge mode the linewidth of Rabi splitting spectra is about one-tenth of that with the nanoparticle only, both with approximate to 95% of photons propagating unidirectionally along the nanoscale waveguide. We suggest that our paper establishes a nanophotonic interface of chiral quantum electrodynamics for on-chip nonreciprocal quantum light sources, quantum circuits, and scalable quantum networks.

Abstract:The ability to control phonons in solids is key for diverse quantum applications, ranging from quantum information processing to sensing. Often, phonons are sources of noise and decoherence, since they can interact with a variety of solid-state quantum systems. To mitigate this, quantum systems typically operate at milli-Kelvin temperatures to reduce the number of thermal phonons. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach that relies on engineering phononic density of states, drawing inspiration from photonic bandgap structures that have been used to control the spontaneous emission of quantum emitters. We design and fabricate diamond phononic crystals with a complete phononic bandgap spanning 50 - 70 gigahertz, tailored to suppress interactions of a single silicon-vacancy color center with resonant phonons of the thermal bath. At 4 Kelvin, we demonstrate a reduction of the phonon-induced orbital relaxation rate of the color center by a factor of 18 compared to bulk. Furthermore, we show that the phononic bandgap can efficiently suppress phonon-color center interactions up to 20 Kelvin. In addition to enabling operation of quantum memories at higher temperatures, the ability to engineer qubit-phonon interactions may enable new functionalities for quantum science and technology, where phonons are used as carriers of quantum information.

Nanobiomedicine Crystal-Inspired Optical Quantum Bit Storage

Abstract:The present study is aimed to develop a nanobiomedicine crystal-inspired optical quantum bit (qubit) storage system, as one candidate of potentially promising solutions to the nanofabrication problem, by a bottom-up approach of chemical or physical forces operating at a nanometer scale, to self-assemble 0.1nm~10nm basic units into a large "vertical" storage architecture for simultaneously computing several qubits. The state of an optical qubit may be measured in a momentum space by using laser micro-photoluminescence spectrum (Laser micro-PL spectrum) in combination with the Gaussian non-linear function fit of optical wavelengths and optical intensities and twice faster Fourier transformations of photoluminescence spectra at time and frequency domains. All architectures of self-assembled nanobiomedicine may be probed by conducting atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) in three dimensions (x, y, z axes) with a powerfully spatial resolution at sub-angstrom. The reproducible results of optical qubit measurements in self-assembled nanobiomedicine crystals more than six times by laser micro-PL spectra for one nanobiomedicine crystal sample were acquired, as shown in average values of wavelengths and intensities with standard deviations in laser micro-PL spectra. It is concluded that the nanobiomedicine crystal-inspired optical qubit storage is emerging as a new solid state storage system.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavities have attracted increasing attention owing to the advantages of high Q-factor, small mode volume and no limitation of FSR. Various PhC cavities have been developed for optical communications, optical sensors, optomechanics, etc.. We investigate the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of high quality factor PhCnanobeam cavities on silicon. The results show that PhCnanobeam cavities have the potential to ful?ll the aforementioned requirements and form a building block for achieving on-chip optical filtering and sensing applications.

Abstract:A major question for condensed matter physics is whether a solid-state quantum computer can ever be built. Here we discuss two different schemes for quantum information processing using semiconductor nanostructures. First, we show how optically driven coupled quantum dots can be used to prepare maximally entangled Bell and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states by varying the strength and duration of selective light pulses. The setup allows us to perform an all-optical generation of the quantum teleportation of an excitonic state in an array of coupled quantum dots. Second, we give a proposal for reliable implementation of quantum logic gates and long decoherence times in a quantum dots system based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), where the nuclear resonance is controlled by the ground state transitions of few-electron QDs in an external magnetic field. The dynamical evolution of these systems in the presence of environmentally-induced decoherence effects is also discussed.

Abstract:Spins confined in quantum dots are considered as a promising platform for quantum information processing. While many advanced quantum operations have been demonstrated, experimental as well as theoretical efforts are now focusing on the development of scalable spin quantum bit architectures. One particularly promising method relies on the coupling of spin quantum bits to microwave cavity photons. This would enable the coupling of distant spins via the exchange of virtual photons for two qubit gate applications, which still remains to be demonstrated with spin qubits. Here, we use a circuit QED spin-photon interface to drive a single electronic spin in a carbon nanotube based double quantum dot using cavity photons. The microwave spectroscopy allows us to identify an electrically controlled spin transition with a decoherence rate which can be tuned to be as low as $250kHz$. We show that this value is consistent with the expected hyperfine coupling in carbon nanotubes. These coherence properties, which can be attributed to the use of pristine carbon nanotubes stapled inside the cavity, should enable coherent spin-spin interaction via cavity photons and compare favourably to the ones recently demonstrated in Si-based circuit QED experiments.
