Abstract:We explore the high-density, nonlinear regime of atom-cavity coupling for a gas of three-level atoms at high temperature inside an optical cavity, interacting with the cavity field and a strong driving field. We find a region of parameters where the two side peaks in the transmission spectrum which, in the linear regime, are associated with “bright polaritons” split into two pairs of peaks. Experimental results are presented along with a theoretical model that indicates that this phenomenon is unique to the three-level system in the large Dopplerbroadening regime.

Abstract:We study the polariton resonances with the five-level M-type atoms inside an optical cavity through the observation of the cavity transmission spectrum. Abstract:We report the experimental study of a hybrid quantum solid state system comprising two-level artificial atoms coupled to cavity confined optical and vibrational modes. In this system combining cavity quantum electrodynamics and cavity optomechanics, excitons in quantum wells play the role of the two-level atoms and are strongly coupled to the optical field leading to mixed polariton states. The planar optical microcavities are laterally microstructured, so that polaritons can be confined in wires, 3D traps, and arrays of traps, providing an additional tuning degree of freedom for the polariton energies. Upon increasing the non-resonant laser excitation power, a Bose-Einstein condensation of the polaritons is observed. Optomechanical induced amplification type of experiments with an additional weak laser probe clearly identify the coupling of these Bose-Einstein condensates to 20~GHz breathing-like vibrations confined in the same cavities. With single continuous wave non-resonant laser excitation, and once the laser power overpasses the threshold for Bose-Einstein condensation in trap arrays, mechanical self-oscillation similar to phonon ``lasing'' is induced with the concomitant observation of Mollow-triplet type mechanical sidebands on the Bose-Einstein condensate emission. High-resolution spectroscopic photoluminescence experiments evidence that these vibrational side-band resolved lines are enhanced when neighboring traps are red-detuned with respect to the BEC emission at overtones of the fundamental 20 GHz breathing mode frequency. These results constitute the first demonstration of coherent cavity polariton optomechanics and pave the way towards a novel type of hybrid devices for quantum technologies, phonon lasers, and phonon-photon bidirectional translators.

Spontaneous polarized phase transitions and symmetry breaking of an ultracold atomic ensemble in a Raman-assisted cavity

Abstract:We investigate the ground-state properties and quantum phase transitions of an ensemble consisting of $N$ four-level atoms within an optical cavity coupled to the single cavity mode and external laser fields. The system is described by an extended imbalanced Dicke model, in which the co- and counterrotating coupling terms are allowed to have different coupling strengths. Some novel polarized phases characterized by the phase differences between the cavity field or the atomic spin excitation and the Raman laser are found analytically. Meanwhile, the full phase diagram and quantum phase transitions are also revealed. Finally, the breaking or restoration of the intrinsic symmetry in this system is addressed. It is found that besides the continuous $U(1)$ and discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries, the system also exhibits two reflection symmetries $\sigma_v$s, a central symmetry $C_2$ in the abstract position-momentum representation, and a discrete reflection parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, a parameter exchange symmetry $\mathcal{T}_\mathrm{ex}$ in the parameters space. These additional symmetries are governed by two Coxeter groups.

Transmission Spectrum of Doppler-broadened Two-Level Atoms in a Cavity in the Strong-Coupling Regime

Abstract:We present the theory of "normal mode splitting" (sometimes also called, in the low-intensity limit, "vacuum Rabi splitting") for a Doppler-broadened two-level medium in an optical cavity, and illustrate it with experimental results. We note that, in the extreme Doppler limit, the absorptive and dispersive properties of the medium are due to almost completely different groups of atoms, and hence it is possible, in principle, to partially saturate the absorbing atoms without changing the dispersion very much; as a result of this, for a sufficiently high probe intensity, transmission peaks well within the Doppler absorption profile are visible, even though the medium is optically dense. Some interesting features exhibited by this system in various regimes are transmission peaks that are unrelated to the "zero-phase" condition, and three-peaked transmission spectra for high atomic density and high cavity input power.

Abstract:Optical bistability (OB) of Rydberg atoms provides a new, to the best of our knowledge, platform for studying nonequilibrium physics and a potential resource for precision metrology. To date, the observation of Rydberg OB has been limited in free space. Here, we explore cavity-enhanced Rydberg OB with a thermal cesium vapor cell. The signal of Rydberg OB in a cavity is enhanced by more than one order of magnitude compared with that in free space. The slope of the phase transition signal at the critical point is enhanced more than 10 times that without the cavity, implying an enhancement of two orders of magnitude in the sensitivity for Rydberg-based sensing and metrology.

Abstract:Polarization, an intrinsic ingredient of photon, plays a critical role in its interaction with matter. A general polarization state can be an appropriate superposition of two basic polarization states, say, the vertical and horizontal linear polarized state. Here we study spontaneous emission of a V-type three-level atom（with two upper states close in energy level）strongly coupled with a single-mode damped optical cavity. By defining a general polarization state of atom as a specific superposition of the two upper quantum states, we can prepare atoms with linear polarization at arbitrary direction, left and right circular polarization, and left and right elliptical polarization, similar to photons. We find that the spontaneous emission of light from these "polarized" three-level atoms shows very different profiles of side and axis spectra. This means that the polarization state of three-level atoms can become an active ingredient to manipulate its interaction with light and control the quantum interference effect. Exploitation of the coherent superposition and interference of quantum states in"polarized" atoms would allow one to deeply explore new frontiers of light–matter interaction.

We observe the multiatom vacuum Rabi splitting of a composite cavity and atom system. When a coupling field is applied to the atoms and induces the resonant two-photon Raman transition with the cavity field in a Lambda-type system, we observe a cavity transmission spectrum with two vacuum Rabi sidebands and a central peak representing the intracavity dark state. The central peak linewidth is significantly narrowed by the dark-state resonance and its position is insensitive to the frequency change of the empty cavity.
Multi-level quantum Rabi model for anharmonic vibrational polaritons

Abstract:We propose a cavity QED approach to describe light-matter interaction between an individual anharmonic molecular vibration and an infrared cavity field. Starting from a generic Morse oscillator with quantized nuclear motion, we derive a multi-level quantum Rabi model to study vibrational polaritons beyond the rotating-wave approximation. We analyze the spectrum of vibrational polaritons in detail and compare with available experiments. For high excitation energies, the spectrum exhibits a dense manifold of true and avoided level crossings as the light-matter coupling strength and cavity frequency are tuned. These crossings are governed by a pseudo parity selection rule imposed by the cavity field. We also analyze polariton eigenstates in nuclear coordinate space. We show that the bond length of a vibrational polariton at a given energy is never greater than the bond length of a bare Morse oscillator with the same energy. This type of bond hardening of vibrational polaritons occurs at the expense of the creation of virtual infrared cavity photons, and may have implications in chemical reactivity.

Abstract:We present an experimental study of cavity-assisted Rydberg-atom electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) using a high-finesse optical cavity (F similar to 28 000). Rydberg atoms are excited via a two-photon transition in a ladder-type EIT configuration. A three-peak structure of the cavity transmission spectrum is observed when Rydberg EIT is generated inside the cavity. The two symmetrically spaced side peaks are caused by bright-state polaritons, while the central peak corresponds to a dark-state polariton. Anticrossing phenomena and the effects of mirror adsorbate electric fields are studied under different experimental conditions. We determine a lower bound on the coherence time for the system of 7.26 +/- 0.06 mu s, most likely limited by laser dephasing. The cavity-Rydberg EIT system can be useful for single-photon generation using the Rydberg blockade effect, studying many-body physics, and generating novel quantum states among many other applications.

Abstract:Breaking the time‐reversal symmetry of light is of great importance for fundamental physics and has attracted increasing interest in the study of non‐reciprocal photonic devices. Here, a chiral cavity quantum electrodynamics system with multiple atoms strongly coupled to a Fabry–Pérot cavity is experimentally demonstrated. By polarizing the internal quantum state of the atoms, the time‐reversal symmetry of the atom‐cavity interaction is broken. The strongly coupled atom‐cavity system can be described by non‐reciprocal quasiparticles, that is, the cavity polariton. When it works in the linear regime, the inherent nonreciprocity makes the system work as a single‐photon‐level optical isolator. Benefiting from the collective enhancement of multiple atoms, an isolation ratio exceeding 30 dB on the single‐quanta level (≈ 0.1 photon on average) is achieved. The validity of the non‐reciprocal device under zero magnetic field and the reconfigurability of the isolation direction are also experimentally demonstrated. Moreover, when the cavity polariton works in the nonlinear regime, the quantum interference between polaritons with weak anharmonicity induces non‐reciprocal nonclassical statistics of cavity transmission from coherent probe light.

Abstract:We investigate polarization spectroscopy of an excited state transition in room-temperature rubidium vapor. By applying a circularly polarized coupling beam, resonant with the 5 2 S 1/2 → 5 2 P 3/2 transition, we induce anisotropy in the atomic medium that is then probed by scanning a probe beam across the 5 2 P 3/2 → 6 2 S 1/2 transition. By performing polarimetry on the probe beam, a dispersive spectral feature is observed. We characterize the excited-state polarization spectrum as a function of coupling intensity for both isotopes and find that at high intensities, Autler-Townes splitting results in a sub-feature, which theoretical modelling shows is enhanced by Doppler averaging. This spectroscopic technique produces a narrow dispersive signal which is ideal for laser frequency stabilization to excited-state transitions.

Understanding the polaritonic ground state in cavity quantum electrodynamics

Abstract:Molecular polaritons arise when molecules interact so strongly with light that they become entangled with each other. This light-matter hybridization alters the chemical and physical properties of the molecular system and allows chemical reactions to be controlled without the use of external fields. We investigate the impact of strong light-matter coupling on the electronic structure using perturbative approaches and demonstrate that Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory can reproduce the ground state energies in optical cavities to comparable accuracy as ab initio cavity quantum electrodynamics methodologies for currently relevant coupling strengths. The method is effective in both low and high cavity frequency regimes and straightforward to implement via response functions. Furthermore, we establish simple relations between cavity-induced intermolecular forces and van der Waals forces. These findings provide valuable insight into the manipulation of ground-state polaritonic energy landscapes, shedding light on the systems and conditions in which modifications can be achieved.

Abstract:In a three-level atomic system coupled by two equal-amplitude laser fields with a frequency separation 2$\delta$, a weak probe field exhibits a multiple-peaked absorption spectrum with a constant peak separation $\delta$. The corresponding probe dispersion exhibits steep normal dispersion near the minimum absorption between the multiple absorption peaks, which leads to simultaneous slow group velocities for probe photons at multiple frequencies separated by $\delta$. We report an experimental study in such a bichromatically coupled three-level $\Lambda$ system in cold $^{87}$Rb atoms. The multiple-peaked probe absorption spectra under various experimental conditions have been observed and compared with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:High-bandwidth, fiber-based optical cavities are a promising building block for future quantum networks. They are used to resonantly couple stationary qubits such as single or multiple atoms with photons routing quantum information into a fiber network at high rates. In high-bandwidth cavities, standard fluorescence imaging on the atom-cavity resonance line for controlling atom positions is impaired since the Purcell effect strongly suppresses all-directional fluorescence. Here, we restore imaging of $^{87}$Rb atoms strongly coupled to such a fiber Fabry-Pérot cavity by detecting the repumper fluorescence which is generated by continuous and three-dimensional Raman sideband cooling. We have carried out a detailed spectroscopic investigation of the repumper-induced differential light shifts affecting the Raman resonance, dependent on intensity and detuning. Our analysis identifies a compromise regime between imaging signal-to-noise ratio and survival rate, where physical insight into the role of dipole-force fluctuations in the heating dynamics of trapped atoms is gained.
