Abstract:Photon correlation spectroscopy probing fluctuations in scattered or fluorescent intensity to study particle dynamics in fluids is by now well established in the visible light regime. With the advent of high-brilliance synchrotron radiation sources, correlation spectroscopy utilizing scattered radiation has recently been extended to the x-ray wavelength regime by using spatially coherent x-rays to study the time fluctuations of the corresponding speckle patterns. In this presentation, we report the development of a new technique, x-ray fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (XFCS) for elucidating the dynamics of particles. This technique does not require coherent beams but relies on intense microfocused x-ray beams. Further, it is element specific. As a demonstration of this method, the dynamics of gold colloidal particles and aggregates undergoing diffusion and sedimentation in water was studied by measuring the time autocorrelation of the gold fluorescence intensity from a small illuminated volume. The values of the translational diffusion constants and sedimentation velocities obtained are in excellent agreement with theoretical estimates and other measurements. Further potential applications of the technique are discussed.

Abstract:Although thermionic emission has been studied for more than 100 years, recent interest in novel electron devices for military and civilian use has led to a surge in demand for cathodes with enhanced emission properties (e.g., higher current density, more uniform emission, lower operating temperatures, or extended in-service longevity). Sc-containing "scandate" cathodes have been widely reported to exhibit superior emission properties compared to previous-generation thermionic cathodes, including oxide, B-, and M-type cathodes. Despite extensive study spanning several decades, the mechanism by which the addition of Sc enhances cathode emission remains ambiguous, and nonuniform emission, low reproducibility, and inconsistent longevity continue to prevent widespread commercial integration of scandate cathodes into electron devices. This second part of a two-part review explores the various mechanisms proposed for how Sc enhances electron emission and summarizes ongoing scientific challenges relating to the development and deployment of scandate cathodes.

Abstract:Metal coated dispenser cathode is of great interest due to its low operation temperature, high current density and long lifetime, however, the emission mechanism is still far from being fully understood. In this work, the tungsten dispenser cathodes were coated with iridium film of 300 nm in thickness. The phase transition and surface structure evolution during cathode activation was systematically investigated. The as-deposited iridium coating shows a columnar grain morphology with ultrafine size. Upon heating for 1 h at 1150 °C, a multiple-layer of Ir/Ir3W/IrW was detected and it fully converted to IrW layer after 4 h heat treatment. Such a structure evolution can be well explained based on thermodynamics. The Ir → Ir3W → IrW phase transition induces obvious film thickening and grain coarsening. The full activation could increase the emission current density from 17.35 A/cm2 to 30.92 A/cm2 at 1050 °C. Density function theory (DFT) simulation results demonstrate the enhanced emission of IrW-coated cathode may be due to its balanced adsorption behaviors with Ba and O atoms. Our findings will provide deeper insights into the design and development of metal coated cathodes with better performance.

Abstract:In this article, co-precipitation was combined with a high-temperature solid-state reaction to realize strontium (Sr) doping of the emission-active materials (Ba–Sr–Sc–Ca–Al–O) of scandate dispenser cathodes. The precursor of the co-precipitation product was composed of alkaline Earth metal carbonates and hydroxides of Sc and Al. The final products included Ba2ScAlO5 and Ba3CaAl2O7 and Sr in the form of strontium aluminates (SrAl12O19 or SrAl4O7). At 1100°CB, the pulse current density of the Sr-doped cathode in a planar diode reached 215.5 A/cm2, exceeding that of conventional scandate cathodes without Sr. The developed emission-active materials and corresponding cathodes are more adaptable to vacuum electronic devices (VEDs) and have a wider range of potential applications than conventional cathodes.

Abstract:Scandate cathodes have received widespread attention due to the high emission current density, existing results have shown that the content of strontium in impregnant has a certain degree of impact on the emission property of scandate cathodes. In this work, the mechanism by how strontium affects the emission property was investigated through experiments and theoretical analysis. Five precursor powders with different strontium element contents were prepared by freeze-drying method, and the impregnant was obtained after sintering. Then composition analysis was conducted on the impregnant and prepared experimental cathodes for emission performance testing, also the surface emission structure of cathode was established for density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The experimental results indicated that the variation in strontium content can alter the material composition of the impregnant and have impact on cathode emission performance. During the process of increasing strontium content from 0 to 12 atom%, the emission performance of the experimental cathodes increased first and then decreased. Under a testing temperature of 1100 , the cathodes with 6 atom% Sr have the highest emission current density of 34.9 A/cm2 at 260 V dc and 523.2 A/cm2 at 2000 V pulse voltage among the five experimental cathodes, and this cathode exhibits good emission uniformity. DFT results indicate that strontium does not directly participate in reducing the work function of cathode surface. It can be considered that strontium has a promoting effect on the formation of active substance, an appropriate amount of strontium promotes the formation of emitting active substance Ba2ScAl5 during the preparation process of the impregnant, thus promoting the improvement of cathode emission performance; while excessive strontium can lead to the generation of impurities that lower the emission performance of cathodes.

Abstract:Eu2+ doped and Eu2+, Ce3+ co-doped LiSi2N3 phosphors were successfully prepared by gas-pressed sintering in this study. The dominant excitation band of LiSi2N3:Eu2+ was found at about 355 nm and exhibited a broad-band yellow emission centered at 592 nm instead of the early reports of 310 nm and 580 nm, respectively. The shifting behavior dominantly contributed to different oxygen content in the host. The second luminescent center formed by the introduction of oxygen into nitride phosphors was discussed in detail. The detailed energy transfer mechanism from Ce3+ to Eu2+ in the LiSi2N3 host is also reported and a notable unusual redshift behavior was observed in Eu2+, Ce3+ co-doped LiSi2N3 phosphors.

Abstract:Tungsten-based scandate dispenser cathodes are promising next-generation thermionic electron sources for vacuum electron devices, due to their excellent emission performance at temperatures lower than those required for conventional cathodes. There has been a significant recent effort to understand scandate cathode performance and to characterize the tungsten and other materials on the emitting surface, primarily via the study of cathodes before and after emission testing. Moreover, these scandate cathodes have typically been characterized at room temperature only. In situ observations of scandate cathodes is challenging, as these devices are thermionic emitters that operate in a high-vacuum environment, and because the sizes of relevant material features range from the micron (2.0 μm) to the nanometer (<50 nm diameter) length scales. In the current study, a series of in situ heating experiments was conducted on un-activated impregnated scandate cathode fragments, utilizing a micro-electro-mechanical system-based heater chip in a scanning electron microscope, enabling the real-time observation of cathode material evolution at elevated temperature (up to 1200 °C) under a pressure of 10−6 to 10−7 mbar. This study revealed how impregnant materials grow and migrate within the cathode matrix at elevated temperatures, and these observations are key to a thorough understanding of the behavior of scandate cathode materials. It also enabled direct observation of the incipient faceting of tungsten surfaces at high temperature while surrounded by impregnant materials. These are the first in situ observations of scandate cathode material evolution in relevant environmental conditions and at sufficiently high resolution to provide insights into the morphological and phase changes that occur in the near-surface regions of scandate cathodes.

Abstract:Scandate cathode as a thermionic electron emission material has attracted broad interest owing to its high electron emission capability. Despite the large number of studies on the electron emission of the scandate tungsten cathode, there is a lack of understanding of the performance of scandium oxide incorporated in other refractory metal matrix. In this work, by applying first-principles calculations, we study the role that Sc 2 O 3 nanocluster plays in enhancing the electron emission of the Hf cathode (labeled as Sc 2 O 3 @Hf). We find that Sc 2 O 3 @Hf is both thermally and mechanically stable, exhibits complex surface structures, and possesses inverse relationship between surface energy and work function. Moreover, the work function of the Hf (0001) surface can be reduced to 3.50 eV due to the change in the vacuum level when Sc 2 O 3 nanocluster is doped, while the work function of the Hf (10 1 ̄ 2) surface can be reduced to 3.39, 3.39, and 3.03 eV when doped with Sc 2 O 3 , Y 2 O 3 , and CeO 2 clusters, respectively.

Abstract:In developing organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials, the luminescent properties of organic emitters and their molecular orientation within the emissive layer significantly impact the luminous effect of the emitting molecules and the device's external quantum efficiency (EQE). This study employs molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to model the vacuum deposition process and density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the molecular characteristics of fluorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. The investigation encompassed comprehensive emission molecules for OLEDs, including fluorescent compounds (NaphImide-n and BMA-n series) and donor-acceptor-type TADF derivatives (o-Cz-TRZ, o-DCz-TRZ, and o-TCz-TRZ). Through systematic simulations, we gained deep insight into the molecular deposition behavior, horizontal transition dipole moment distribution properties, emitter luminescent characteristics, and the correlations between these key factors. The molecular orientation and host-dopant interactions plays a decision role in governing the morphology and quantum efficiency of the resulting materials. During the deposition process, the molecular emitting dipole orientation increases following the enlargement of the horizontally oriented TDM of the dopant molecules and the intermolecular van der Waals interaction between the host and dopant. This work successfully combined MD and DFT methodologies to enhance understanding of the relationship between molecular architecture and luminescence efficiency, providing insight for optimizing OLED materials, and performing their potential in guiding the design of next-generation organic electronics for display and lighting applications.

Abstract:Doping metal ions into lead halide perovskites is a promising method to regulate their structural stability and optical properties. In this work, Mn 2+ /Cr 3+ codoped Cs 2 AgInCl 6 double perovskite single crystals (DPSCs) were synthesized using a programmed cooling hydrothermal method. Upon light excitation at 350 nm, the co-doped CAIC:Mn 2+ ,Cr 3+ DPSC samples exhibit two photoluminescence (PL) bands with a wide emission switch ranging from orange to NIR. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the NIR emission can be increased to 49.30% by varying the concentration of dopant ions. The high PLQY is attributed to the energy transfer (ET) from selftrapped excitons (STEs) to Mn 2+ and Cr 3+ dopant ions. The presence of ET was confirmed by analyzing time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and temperature-dependent PL. Moreover, we determine the ET pathway from STE to Mn 2+ ions at low temperatures using temperature-dependent PL spectra. The emission colors of CAIC:Mn 2+ ,Cr 3+ DPSCs can be continuously tuned from yellow to orange by controlling temperature. This ET-induced dual emission seems to be governed by thermal activation. A model is proposed to explain the efficient ET processes from the host DPSCs to Mn 2+ and Cr 3+ dopants, as well as possible ET processes from Mn 2+ to Cr 3+ ion centers.

Abstract:Dispenser cathodes are the most widely used electron emission source in vacuum electron devices. The impregnant is the source for producing active substances in the dispenser cathodes, which play an irreplaceable role. However, impregnants’ phase structure and optical response properties have yet to be systematically investigated. Herein, four aluminates were prepared as impregnants via homogeneous-lyophilization followed by calcination. Due to the unique preparation process, the elemental distribution of aluminates is exceptionally uniform. Based on the first-principles DFT calculations, the primary phases of the two aluminates 532 and 411 were confirmed to be (Ba0.61Ca0.39)3Al2O6 (P2 1 3) and (Ba0.75Ca0.25)4Al2O7 (Cmca). At the same time, α-Ba2ScAlO5 and β-Ba2ScAlO5 are the only phases of aluminates 411-0.75Sc and 411-1.25Sc, respectively. XPS confirmed two chemical states of Ba and Sc in the aluminates. FT-IR and 27Al NMR indicate that the aluminum-oxygen skeleton in all aluminates exists mainly as [AlO4] tetrahedrons, accompanied by a small amount of distorted [AlOx] (x = 5, 6) polyhedrons. The UV–visible light absorption capacity, band gap and intra-structural electron transfer capacity of all aluminates are determined by UV–Vis DRS and PL spectra. The dispenser cathodes impregnated with aluminates 532 and 411 have zero-field current densities of 5.3 A/cm2 and 14.3 A/cm2 at 1100°Cb, respectively. The dispenser cathodes impregnated with aluminate containing scandium have different space-charge-limited current densities, i.e., 29.48 A/cm2 for 411-0.75Sc and 13.66 A/cm2 for 411-1.25Sc at 1000°Cb. This work will provide more options for synthesizing and applying impregnants.

Electrochemiluminescence Behaviors of Eu3+-doped CdS Nanocrystals Film in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Eu(3+) doped CdS nanocrystals (CdS:Eu NCs) were synthesized via a co-precipitation method. The doping of Eu(3+) ions caused a 4-fold enhancement in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) intensity and more stable cathodic signals compared to pure CdS NCs. Such enhancement was mostly ascribed to doping-induced improvement in the stability of reduced NCs. A new emission peak around 620 nm was observed in ECL spectra of the doped NCs, which belongeded to the (5)D(0)→(7)F(2) transition of Eu(3+) ions in CdS NCs. Correspondingly, a pair of oxidation and reduction peaks occurred at +1.01 V and +0.61 V because of the formation of Eu(3+)-surface states complex when the CdS:Eu NCs solution underwent cyclic voltammogram scanning. Benefiting from the strong ECL emission of the doped NCs and high affinity of the doped Eu(3+) ions to oxygen, the CdS:Eu NCs film showed a great oxygen-sensitivity. The intense red luminescence of the characteristic transitions of Eu(3+) in CdS:Eu NCs would also have enormous potential in bioanlytical systems.
Physics-based Model for Nonuniform Thermionic Electron Emission from Polycrystalline Cathodes

Abstract:Experimental observations of thermionic electron emission demonstrate a smooth transition between TL and FSCL regions of the emitted-current-density-versus-temperature (J-T) (Miram) curve and the emitted-current-density-versus-voltage (J-V) curve. Knowledge of the temperature and shape of the TL-FSCL transition is important in evaluating the thermionic electron emission performance of cathodes, including predicting the lifetime. However, there have been no first-principles physics-based models that can predict the smooth TL-FSCL transition region for real thermionic cathodes without applying physically difficult to justify a priori assumptions or empirical phenomenological equations. Previous work detailing the nonuniform thermionic emission found that the effects of 3-D space charge, patch fields, and Schottky barrier lowering can lead to a smooth TL-FSCL transition region from a model thermionic cathode surface with a checkerboard spatial distribution of work function values. In this work, we construct a physics-based nonuniform emission model for commercial dispenser cathodes for the first time. This emission model is obtained by incorporating the cathode surface grain orientation via electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and the facet-orientation-specific work function values from density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The model enables construction of two-dimensional emitted current density maps of the cathode surface and corresponding J-T and J-V curves. The predicted emission curves show excellent agreement with experiment, not only in TL and FSCL regions but, crucially, also in the TL-FSCL transition region. This model improves the understanding on the relationship between thermionic emission and cathode microstructure, which is beneficial to the design of vacuum electronic devices.

Abstract:This work concentrated on studying the relationship between electron emission and materials properties. Ferroelectric (PLZT 7/65/35) and paraelectric (PLZT 12/65/35) compositions of lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) system were chosen to study for their widely different ferroelectric and dielectric properties. The experimental results proved the wrong of the spontaneous polarization switching model which based on the ferroelectric properties of the cathode. The mechanism of electron emission from PLZT ceramics was ascertained to field emission and surface plasma emission. The emission current depends slightly on the ferroelectric properties and depends significantly on the dielectric constant.

Abstract:Attaching the side chains onto the electronic backbone of photosensitizing dye molecules has been a widely employed method to enhance the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). However, at the present time the interfacial microstructure as well as its influence on the charge transfer dynamics have not been fully comprehended, both of which underpin the phenomenological photovoltaic characteristics. In this work, we derived the tilt angles of two organic donor-acceptor dyes anchored on the surface of titania by X-ray reflectivity measurements and probed the broad time scale dynamics of charge transfer reactions in DSCs, unveiling the intrinsic roles of bulky or branched side chains attached to the conjugated segment in modulating photovoltaic behaviors.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced ZnS: Ag quantum dots scintillator has been manufactured by coupling quantum dots and dendritic silver surface-enhanced substrates. Four-fold enhancement of the fluorescence intensity was achieved compare to the undoped quantum dots without surface-enhanced substrates. Two silicon layers of certain thickness were used to prevent quenching of the fluorescence by monitoring the distance between quantum dots and surface-enhanced substrates. The enhancement results show consistence with theories, and larger enhancement factor is possible to be obtained with optimal preparation procedure. This study suggests a new method to achieve high performance quantum dots scintillator beneficial to radiation detection applications. (c) 2019 Author(s). Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), as an important carbon-based nanomaterial, have been widely used in fluorescence (FL) detection, bioimaging, photocatalysis, light-emitting devices (LEDs) and many other fields, owing to their excellent optical properties. Regulating the fluorescent properties of carbon dots (CDs) in a controlled manner has been a fundamental research goal. Herein, solvent-dependent CDs (N-CDs) are synthesized through the solvothermal reaction of [Formula: see text]-phenylenediamine (OPD) in ethanol. When N-CDs are dispersed in solvents of different polarities, the emission wavelength only turned 39[Formula: see text]nm red-shift. While, the O-CDs are obtained by modifying the surface of N-CDs with 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid (TMA). O-CDs show four obvious FL emission peaks in the yellow, orange and red regions at 554[Formula: see text]nm, 604[Formula: see text]nm, 650[Formula: see text]nm and 712[Formula: see text]nm with a tail extending to 750[Formula: see text]nm, even entering into near-infrared-I (NIR-I) region. Thus, according to the special structure of CDs, this work provides a novel donor-[Formula: see text]-acceptor (D-[Formula: see text]-A) strategy for preparing long wavelength emissive CDs. Finally, the N-CDs and O-CDs are successfully applied to cellular imaging.
