Abstract:The RGB color space has been widely used, but has limitations. A new presentation method is put forward. It uses floating-point to characterizing colors in L*a*b* color space. Due to high precision of floating-point and uniform perception of L*a*b* color space, it can present better color perception.

Abstract:Due to the nonlinear transform from spectral reflectance to CIELAB values, the solution obtained by minimizing reflectance error in traditional spectral characterization methods will not be optimal when evaluated by colorimetric error. We propose a reflectance estimation method with consideration of perceptual color space. It combines two approaches, i.e., colorimetric-based spectral calculation and weighted spectral calculation. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs better than previous methods in terms of color difference with very slight degradation in spectral accuracy.

Abstract:A perceptually uniform color space has been long desired for a wide range of imaging applications. Such a color space should be able to represent a color pixel in three unique and independent attributes (lightness, chroma, and hue). Such a space would be perceptually uniform over a wide gamut, linear in iso-hue directions, and can predict both small and large color differences as well as lightness in high dynamic range environments. It would also have minimum computational cost for real time or quasi-real time processing. Presently available color spaces are not able to achieve these goals satisfactorily and comprehensively. In this study, a uniform color space is proposed and its performance in predicting a wide range of experimental data is presented in comparison with the other state of the art color spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we compared 15 3D colorspaces and 15 2D chrominance planes widely used in skin-tone detection in terms of compactness of skin class, discriminability between skin and non-skin classes as well as the classification performance of several detectors based on a data set of 1894 images. The results show that 1) the linear transform colospaces have better performance than others, and 2) the absence of the luminance component decreases performance significantly.

Abstract:The CMC(c) colour‐difference formula agrees more closely with visual assessments than does the CIE L*a*b* formula, but hitherto there has been no associated ‘uniform colour space’. A new colour space similar in form to CIE L*a*b* space has been derived in which distances agree closely with the corresponding ΔE(CMC) values. The new space was extensively tested using real and hypothetical pairs of samples. In each case the distance, in the space, between a pair of samples was compared with the ΔE(CMC) value. The disagreement rarely exceeded 20%, while discrepancies between distances in CIE L*a*b* space and those implied by the CMC formula can exceed 500%.It is easy to construct ‘micro‐spaces’ apparently corresponding to the CMC formula which should be applicable to small regions of colour space and hence useful for applications such as colour sorting. Such micro‐spaces did not agree with the CMC formula as well as did the new space.The new space represents a substantial improvement over CIE L*a*b* space with respect to uniformity; its form is similar to CIE L*a*b* and so is easy to use.

Abstract:Six new uniform colour spaces were developed based upon three types of colour discrimination data: small magnitude colour differences, large magnitude colour differences and the Munsell system. Three spaces representative of these six spaces, together with the some of the most widely used spaces, were evaluated by a psychophysical experiment in terms of space uniformity and hue constancy. The results show that IPT type spaces gave an overall better performance.

Abstract:To find an appropriate color transform is necessary and helpful for the applications of color images to extract color features or to reduce the data redundancy. In this paper, we proposed a new scheme to find color transforms close to the optimal transform and agree with human vision system for comparison. We first apply the perceptually uniform color space transform to all the hundreds color test images to convert RGB values into uniform CIE LAB components and then use principal component analysis (PCA) in the uniform space to find the image-dependent optimal color transforms (KLT). In our experiments, we have obtained a new color space: an approximate but fixed transform in CIE LAB space, namely LAR space, which is just the LAB rotated and has an elegant and simple form. The proposed LAR transform performs better than RGB, YCbCr, YUV, HSV and LAB in color-based image retrieval.

Abstract:Several colour-difference formulas such as CMC, CIE94, and CIEDE2000 have been developed by modifying CIELAB. These formulas give much better fits for experimental data based on small colour differences than does CIELAB. None of these has an associated uniform colour space (UCS). The need for a UCS is demonstrated by the widespread use of the a*b* diagram despite the lack of uniformity. This article describes the development of formulas, with the same basic structure as the DIN99 formula, that predict the experimental data sets better than do the CMC and CIE94 colour-difference formulas and only slightly worse than CIEDE2000 (which was optimized on the experimental data). However, these formulas all have an associated UCS. The spaces are similar in form to L*a*b". (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:This study investigated that which of the available color spaces performs best in different aspects when encoding high dynamic range and wide gamut color difference signals. Six different color spaces including CIELAB, CIELUV, CAM16-UCS, ICtCp, ICaCb, and zICaCb (current modification of ICaCb), were investigated for their performance in terms of local and global uniformity, hue linearity, encoding of Rec.2020 signals, convergence of iso-hue lines at single point (locus), distance between locus and origin, and computational cost. A new metric was developed for hue linearity test. Comprehensive testing was performed using the most reliable datasets and some modifications were proposed in the recently developed color space named ICaCb. Results showed that the current zICaCb outperformed other spaces tested for most of the measures and gave similar performance for other measures.

Abstract:Motivated by perceptual principles, we derive a new color space in which the associated metric approximates perceived distances and color displacements capture relationships that are robust to spectral changes in illumination. The resulting color space can be used with existing image processing algorithms with little or no change to the methods.

Abstract:The television and cinema industry has grown very rapidly during last few years and future displays will likely be able to cover high dynamic range (HDR) and wide color gamut (WCG). A uniform color space is desired that is suitable not only for efficient quantization but also for color volume mapping in HDR and WCG environment. A design goal for the next generation display is Rec. 2020 which is the minimum requirement for future video encoding. There are a number of aspects which must be considered while developing a color space in order to meet the requirements of future imagery. Current study lists eight different criterions to test the ability of a color space to meet these requirements. After defining the testing criteria, this study investigated four different color spaces including CIELAB, CAM16-UCS, ICaCb, and recently proposed zICaCb. Results showed that zICaCb outperformed other spaces tested for most of the measures and gave similar performance for others.

Abstract:Based on the study of RGB(red-green-blue) color space and the comparison and analysis of several color difference formulas in RGB color space,this paper summarized three rules of color difference in RGB color space and proposed the conception of the importance of the color component.A new color difference formula in RGB color space was achieved by dynamically adjusting the vector distance and angular between a pair of RGB colors.The dynamic coefficient was weighted by the importance of color component.Color quantization experiment of highly complex color images demonstrates that this new color difference formula's performance is better than those widely used color difference formulas in RGB color space.

Abstract:The measurement of color difference in machine vision is the basement of image segmentation based on the color features, but there is no colorimetrical system for machine vision. Traditional colorimetry has two major systems: (1) to build a color specification system experimentally and to use it as a reference (for example, the Munsell Book of Color). (2) to develop an analytical formulation based on discrimination experiments (such as, CIELAB, CIELUV). The color space based on the psychophysical experiments of human visual system is non-flat. That means the perceptual difference of colors can not be described by the Euclidian distances between the related two points in the color space and the map from perceptual difference to the Euclidian distances is not linear. In this paper, we built a virtual color space based on the physical models of light, reflectance of surfaces and the sampling function of visual system. In this virtual color space the chromatism of machine vision can be calculated linearly. We also suggest that the chromatism measurement of machine vision is different from the spectral reflectance of physical surfaces used in present computer models of color vision.

Abstract:This article discusses the CIELAB color spave within the limits of optimal colors including the complete volume of object colors. A graphical representation of this color space is composed of planes of constant lightness L * with an net of lines parallel to the a * and b * axes. This uniform net is projected onto a number of other color spaces (CIE XYZ, tristimulus RGB, predistorted RGB, and YCC color space) to demonstrate and study the structure of color differences in these spaces on the basis of CIELAB color difference formulas. Two formulas are considered: the CIE 1976 formula *** and the newer CiE 1994 formula ***. The various color spaces considered are uniformly quantized and the grid of quantized points is transformed into CIELAB colordinates to study the distribution of color differences due to basic quantization steps and to spacify the areas of the colors with the highest sensitivity to color discrimination. From a threshold value for the maximum color difference among neighboring quantized points searched for in each color space, concepts for the quantization of the color spaces are drived. The results are compared to quantization concepts based on average values of quantization errors published in previous work. In addition to color spaces bounded by the optimal colors, the studies are also applied to device-dependent color spaces limited by the range of a positive RGB cube or by the gamut of colors of practical print processes (thermal dye sublimation, chromalin, and match print). For all the color spaces, estimation of the number of distinguishable colors are given on the basis of a threshold value for the color difference perception of *** = 1 and *** = 1.

Abstract:An ideal system of colorimetry should provide measures agreeing to what we see in three respects: color specification, difference and appearance. A successful method to quantify these measures depends upon the reliability of psychophysical experimental data. These data sets have been accumulated and were used to derive the LLAB model. The model includes two parts: a chromatic adaptation transform and a uniform color space. Tristimulus values under a particular set of illuminant/observer conditions are transformed to those of D65/2 degree(s) conditions via a chromatic adaptation transform. A modified version of CIELAB is then used to calculate six perceived attributes: lightness (LL), redness-greenness (AL), yellowness-blueness (BL), colorfulness (CL), hue angle (hL) and hue composition (HL). The model gives similar degree of prediction in comparison with the other state of the art models using the accumulated data sets. The LLAB model demonstrates that it is possible to achieve a system, which provides precise measures to quantify color match, difference and appearance.

Abstract:Digital image enhancement provides good dynamic range compression in each red, green and blue (RGB)channel, but it fails in color rendition. In this letter, we propose to transform a real-color image from RGB space to HSV space at first.Then, saturation channel is enhanced by Butterworth high-pass homomorphic filter and value channel is enhanced by multi-scale Gaussian high-pass homomorphic filters. In addition , we propose anew method to fix on the cut-off frequency of high-pass filter in homomorphic enhancement algorithm and explain the ratio coefficient of high-pass filter.Experiments show the compression of real-color image dynamic range is obviously effective, and it successes in color rendition.

Abstract:Fabric defect detection has been an important but challenging problem. One crucial problem lies in that the fabric colors and textures highly affect the detection performance. Especially, defects with low contrast to the fabric patterns are difficult to detect. We find that the color space is one important issue, and defects exhibit diverse discriminative levels given different color spaces. This observation inspired us to seek for an optimal color space for the defect detection problem. We propose a Color Conversion Network (CCN), which learns to project RGB colors into an optimized color space, where the fabric textures and the defective regions are the most distinguishable, to improve the defect detection performance. By introducing a contrastive loss, CCN can maximize the distance between defects and normal patterns effectively. The proposed CCN can be adopted as an add-in module that flexibly integrates with existing approaches to achieve universal improvement. Experiments demonstrate that the CCN module increases the fabric defect detection performance significantly with four state-of-the-art fabric defect detection approaches.
Testing Uniform Colour Spaces Using Printed Samples.

Abstract:A grey-scale psychophysical experiment was carried out for evaluating colour differences using printed colour patches. In total, 446 pairs of printed samples were prepared surrounding 17 colour centers recommended by the CIE with an average Delta E*(ab) of 3 units. Each pair was assessed 27 times by a panel of 9 normal colour vision observers.The visual results were used to test the existing colour difference formulae and uniform colour spaces. The results showed that all formulae and spaces outperformed CIELAB. The colour discrimination ellipses were used to compare with those of the earlier studies and they agreed with each other.

Abstract:Can a single colour model be used for all colorimetric applications? This article intends to answer that question. Colour appearance models have been developed to predict colour appearance under different viewing conditions. They are also capable of evaluating colour differences because of their embedded uniform colour spaces. This article first tests the performance of the CIE 2002 colour appearance model, CIECAM02, in predicting three types of colour discrimination data sets: large- and small-magnitude colour differences under daylight illuminants and small-magnitude colour differences under illuminant A. The results showed that CIECAM02 gave reasonable performance compared with the best available formulae and uniform colour spaces. It was further extended to give accurate predictions to all types of colour discrimination data. The results were very encouraging in that the CIECAM02 extensions performed second best among all the colour models tested and only slightly poorer than the models that were developed to fit a particular data set. One extension derived to fit all types of data can predict well for colour differences having a large range of difference magnitudes. (C) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Color Difference Evaluation for Wide-Color-gamut Displays.

Abstract:With the emerging demand for wide-color-gamut displays, an issue has been raised in which the commonly used color difference formulae or uniform color spaces that were derived based on the data produced in the relatively smaller color gamut could be unreliable for predicting color differences in the highly saturated color regions. A psychophysical experiment was carried out for evaluating color difference at a luminance level of 310cd/m2 on a wide-color-gamut display with an approximate DCI-P3 color gamut. Twelve color centers were selected to cover the entire gamut boundary. There were 192 pairs of samples over 12 color centers judged by 18 observers using the greyscale psychophysical method. The data set was used to test the performance of six uniform color spaces and color difference equations, CIELAB, CIEDE2000, CAM02-UCS, Jzazbz, ICTCP, and nICTCP, a newly revised ICTCP formula. The color discrimination ellipses were used to test local and global uniformity of color spaces and compared with previous studies. The results revealed that all formulae improved their performance to have a mean lightness parametric factor of about 0.5. CAM02-UCS significantly outperformed the others in overall, local, and global uniformity. The high-quality visual data set is recommended to evaluate or to derive color difference formulae for WCG applications in the future.
