Abstract:In this paper, a novel 3-D microcavity based on Bragg fiber dual-tapers is proposed. The principle and characteristics of the Bragg fiber dual-taper are analyzed firstly, showing that the dual-taper can function as a fiber mirror. Its reflection and transmission can be adjusted by the design of taper structure parameters. Then, the structure of a 3-D microcavity composed by two Bragg fiber dual-tapers is investigated by the finite-difference time domain method. The relation between the cavity-mode wavelengths and the cavity lengths shows that it can be looked as a Fabry-PEacuterot cavity, using the Bragg fiber dual-tapers as the mirrors. By proper design, a cavity-mode Q factor up to 4.0093times10 6 can be realized in this cavity. Its characteristics as narrowband filters are investigated, showing that its transmission spectrum has the shape of Lorenz curve and a finesse up to 10 5 can be realized if cavity mode with a high Q factor is used. The analysis shows that high-quality 3-D light confinement can be realized in the proposed Bragg fiber dual-taper microcavity, which has great potential in high-efficiency light-emitting devices and small fiber components.

Abstract:We report a simple technique for the realization of fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavities with large Q/V values as well as high cavity-to-fiber coupling efficiencies. The open microcavity we demonstrate consists of a flat mirror and a concave mirror on the tip of a single mode optical fiber. Combining hydrofluoric acid chemical wet etching with CO2 laser reflow, we obtain a fiber-tip atomically smooth concave surface with a diameter of 4.7 μm determined by the fiber core size. The concave surface with a spherical profile is automatically aligned with the fiber core, which enables high cavity-to-fiber power coupling efficiency (higher than 90%) with an optimal fiber-tip mirror's radius of curvature based on numerical simulation results. After distributed-Bragg-reflector coating, we have realized a wavelength-tunable open microcavity with a quality factor Q exceeding 1000 and a mode volume V of 13.6 μm3, and laser emission is demonstrated from this microcavity.

Abstract:A tapered microtube fabricated from a glass capillary tube can achieve subwavelength focusing at optical frequencies. This focusing effect is influenced by many factures. The role of taper ratios is invested in this paper with theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. It revealed that when the taper ratio is larger, the focusing spot has higher intensity and smaller FWHM.

Abstract:In this study, the dual-transmission properties of a two-cavity structure comprising three asymmetric fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) arc investigated. The periods or Bragg wavelengths of the three FBGs arc different from each other, causing their three stopbands to partially overlap and resulting in two overlapped regions. The sizes of these overlapped regions can be controlled by tuning the FBG periods. In addition, only one wavelength can be transmitted from each of the overlapped regions. Thus, dual-transmission is achieved. However, dual transmission will exhibit an ultranarrow bandwidth if a long cavity is considered. Further, the spacing between two wavelengths can be altered by adjusting the FBG periods. The all-fiber structure proposed in this study can be extended to achieve multiple transmissions exhibiting equal or unequal spacings. The proposed structure can be potentially applied in dual- or multi-wavelength fiber lasers.

Abstract:The material dispersion of a tappered fiber is described by Sellmeier's equation. The dependence of refractive index on wavelength kind doping concentration is discussed. A fie-Ne laser with the output wavelength of 632.8 nm is used in the experiment. When the cutoff frequency of the fiber is less than the laser frequency, the guiding modes of a single-mode fiber (at 1550 nm) are investigated. The results show that the original single-mode fiber becomes a multi-mode waveguide. The propagation and mode coupling of the light, in the taper region are analyzed. By controlling the taper end size of the fiber, the unique tapered fiber call convert a multi-mode beam into a single-mode one.

Abstract:We use the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method to model silica taper-microfiber structures integrated on substrates. The dependence of the transmission on the length of the microfiber is investigated for two different structures. Optimization of the geometric parameters is provided and two substrate materials, namely MgF2 and fiuorosilicate glass, are considered. We also investigate the case where the structure is covered with a dielectric material.

Abstract:The guiding modes of a single mode fiber(@1550nm),when the cutoff frequency of the fiber is less than the frequency of the launching field,have been investigated.The fused tapered fiber has been fabricated by using the flame of a spirit lamp.If controlling the fiber dimension well during pulling process,the unique tapered fiber will have a multimode input end and a single mode output end for launching wavelength 632.8nm,which are demonstrated in our experiment.

Abstract:We come up with a model of subwavelength-diameter fiber taper-based Bragg gratings (SWDFT-BGs) and numerically investigated the chirp characteristics of Bragg gratings written in local single-mode fiber tapers based on coupled-mode theory and transfer matrix method. The effective modal refractive index varies along adiabatic subwavelength-diameter fiber tapers (SWDFTs), which results in an effective chirp in grating period. Additionally, SWDFT-BGs with full width at half maximum (FWHM) up to 4.9 nm and time-delay slope over 25 ps/nm were achieved in simulations. This offers an idea for fabricating single-mode chirped fiber Bragg gratings using uniform phase-mask and paves ways for waveguide dispersion engineering and wide-bandwidth optical filters.

Abstract:A novel tapered optical fiber coupler was proposed with its waveguide refractive index gradually changing, induced by germanium defects under the UV irradiation. The refractive index change of 6*10-3 in the single-mode communication fiber was achieved in the experiment by means of pre-treating the fiber in high pressure and low temperature environment. A particular index taper profile function was obtained by delicately controlling the exposure conditions, and the mode field radius (MFR) was reduced from 4.8 to 3.2 micrometer in single mode fibers. The coupled wave theory analysis shows that the tapered coupler is capable of excellent transmission for fundamental mode with very small model conversions.
Highly Birefringent Bragg Fiber With A Fiber Core Of 2-Dimension Elliptical-Hole Photonic Crystal Structure

Abstract:A novel highly birefringent Bragg fiber with a fiber core of 2-dimension (2D) elliptical-hole photonic crystal structure is proposed. Elliptical air holes axe introduced into the fiber core to form a normal 2D photonic crystal structure with a hole pitch (center-to-center distance between the air holes) much smaller that the operation wavelength of the Bragg fiber. The elliptical-hole photonic crystal structure acts as an anisotropic medium with different effective indices for transmission light of differently polarization, which inevitably results to high birefringence (up to the order of magnitude of 0.01) of the Bragg fiber. The proposed Bragg fiber possesses different band-gaps for differently polarized mode. Besides the periodic alternating layers of high/low refractive indices, the bandwidth of the band-gap is also dependent on the effective index of the fiber core, which can be controlled by the area of the elliptical air holes.

Abstract:We experimentally realized an optical nanofiber-based cavity by combining a 1-D photonic crystal and Bragg grating structures. The cavity morphology comprises a periodic, triplex air-cube introduced at the waist of the nanofiber. The cavity has been theoretically characterized using FDTD simulations to obtain the reflection and transmission spectra. We have also experimentally measured the transmission spectra and a Q-factor of ~784(87) for a very short periodic structure has been observed. The structure provides strong confinement of the cavity field and its potential for optical network integration makes it an ideal candidate for use in nanophotonic and quantum information systems.

Abstract:Chirped Bragg gratings were used as reflecting planes to construct Fabry-Perot(FP) cavity.Superimposed and chirped Bragg gratings in the same position of fiber were achieved by applying stress and moving photo mask respectively.In the experiment for the photo mask with 1 nm chirp,obvious comb-like transmission spectra could be obtained by both two methods above.Free spectrum range of transmission spectrum can be 0.6 nm with the method of moving photo mask.The classical coupled mode theory is taken for simulation with the Runge-Kutta′s method.The result shows that it can form comb-like transmission spectrum with the free spectrum range beyond 1.3 nm.It is proved by experiments and simulations that the expensive FP cavity can be replaced by the cheap and mature superimposed chirped Bragg grating,which provides a new direction of FP cavity research.

Abstract:A new unequal-period radial hollow Bragg fiber structure has been optimum designed to improve the guided flux transmit characteristics. The core of this Bragg fiber is composed of air, and the cladding is formed by a set of alternating layers of up-doped and down-doped silica. The number of the cladding medium layers can be reduced greatly, and some simulation results have been obtained. The simplification of the cladding layers is useful for the fabrication of Bragg fiber.

Abstract:Three-dimensional micro-scale sensors are in high demand in the fields of metrology, precision manufacturing and industry inspection. To extend the minimum measurable dimension and enhance the accuracy, a tapered four-cores fiber Bragg grating (FBG) probe is proposed. The sensing model is built to investigate the micro-scale sensing characteristics of this method and the design of the tapered stylus is found to influence the accuracy. Therefore, a pi/2 phase-shift point is introduced into the FBGs comprised in the probe to suppress spectrum distortion and improve accuracy. Then, the manufacturing method based on capillary self-assembly is proposed to form the probe and the critical length to form a square array for four cylindrical fibers is verified to be effective for the tapered fibers. Experimental results indicate that the design of the tapered stylus can extend the minimum measurable dimension by twofold and has nearly no influence on its sensitivity. The three-dimensional measurement repeatability is better than 31.1 nm and the stability is better than 200 nm within once measuring process. Furthermore, the measurement precision of the three-dimensional micro-scale measurement results is less than 150 nm. It would be widely used in measuring micro-scale features for industry inspection or metrology .

Abstract:Microfiber-based devices (MDs) have recently attracted much attention because of the enormous progress in the fabrication of low-loss sub-micrometric optical wires which allow for low-loss evanescent waveguiding. 3D microcoil resonators in Teflon and in low index liquid, a refractometric sensor based on a coated optical nanowire microcoil resonator has been investigated and demonstrated [1-3]. Although microcoil resonators have a wealth o af applications for future all-fiber micro-photonic circuits, more MDs (in particular gratings) are required. Similarly to gratings written in conventional fibers and waveguides, microfiber grating can have several different applications, including filters, sensors, and distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. The standard use of photosensitivity fiber core and UV writing is inconvenient for a microfiber because of the disappearance of the germanium core during the tapering process [4]. Here we propose to obtain a microfiber Bragg grating (MBG) by wrapping a microfiber on a microstructured rod. Combining current enabling technologies on microstructured optical fibers and microfibers[5], it is possible to induce periodical corrugations leading to the coupling between forward and backward propagating waves. This device is robust, compact and flexible. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:We demonstrate a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating with a taper induced by femtosecond laser micromachining. In this configuration, a fiber taper fabricated by an arc discharge in a fiber splicer was sandwiched between two fiber Bragg grating sections, which were formed using femtosecond laser line-by-line inscription. The degree of phase shift produced by this device can be adjusted by introducing axial strain, with a sensitivity of 4.59 pm/με. A theoretical study was also conducted by modeling the taper under axial strain. The relative deviation between simulated and measured sensitivities is less than 10%.

Abstract:The local mode-coupled model was used to analyze theoretically the light field property of fiber taper in scanning near-field optical optical microscopy. Differential equations of the forward and backward fundamental mode fields in fiber taper were given. The backward coupling coefficient of fundamental mode was obtained numerically, and it can reach about 1% at most. The reflection makes the fiber taper act as an output mirror of tapered fiber laser resonator. The parabolic taper has a lower reflected coupling coefficient than the truncated taper. The experimental results of the reflection wave from fiber probe were reported.
