Abstract:Carbon nanofibers as constructed from various one-dimensional carbon nanostructure, such as sp(3) diamond nanowire, sp(2) carbon nanotubes, and carbyne, have received enormous interest from both scientific and engineering communities. The newly synthesized nanostructure carbon nanothreads (C_NTH) show superior properties and make them ideal building blocks for high-performance carbon nanofibers. This work systematically investigates the torsional properties of C_NTH bundles through high-throughput large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show that the torsional behavior of C_NTH bundles depends strongly on the loading direction. By adjusting the enantiomer ratios, we can effectively tune the mechanical properties of the bundle structure, including the strain energy density, elastic limit, and torsional rigidity. Benefiting from their rich structural varieties, this work suggests that carbon nanothreads are promising candidates for the next-generation high-performance carbon nanofiber.
Deformation Mechanisms of Diamond Nanothread-Based Nanofiber

Abstract:Carbon fibers have attracted intensive interests from both scientific and engineering communities due to their outstanding mechanical, chemical and physical properties. They have shown promising applications as multifunctional nano-textiles, structural composites, artificial muscles, and others. Our recent work has shown that the recently synthesized ultrathin diamond nanothread can be applied as a novel building block for nanofiber, which not only possesses excellent torsional deformation capability, but also has excellent interfacial load transfer efficiency. It does not show the flattening phenomenon as observed from the (10,10) carbon nanotube bundles, and has a high torsional elastic limit that is almost three times higher than the carbon nanotube bundle. Motivated by these findings, this work has focused on the deformation mechanisms of the individual diamond nanothread. Based on the large-scale molecular dynamics simulation and theoretical analysis, we firstly identified the deformation components, including bending, torsion, compression, and tension. Thereafter, the contribution of each deformation component is analyzed, from which the failure mechanism of the nanofiber is unveiled. This study has established a fundamental understanding of the deformation mechanisms of diamond nanothread-based nanofiber, which will greatly facilitate its engineering application.

Abstract:One of the outstanding challenges in nanotechnology is how to assemble individual nano-objects into macroscopic architectures while preserving their extraordinary properties. For example, the one-dimensional character of electrons in individual carbon nanotubes leads to extremely anisotropic transport, optical, and magnetic phenomena, but their macroscopic manifestations have been limited. Here, we describe novel methods for preparing macroscopic films, sheets, and fibers of highly aligned carbon nanotubes and their applications to basic and applied studies. Sufficiently thick films act as ideal terahertz polarizers, and appropriately doped films operate as polarization-sensitive, flexible, powerless, and ultrabroadband photodetectors. Together with recently developed chirality enrichment methods, these developments will allow us to probe, understand, and control dynamic conductivities of interacting one-dimensional electrons in macroscopic single crystals of single-chirality single-wall carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:A superaligned carbon nanotube (CNT) array is a special kind of vertically aligned CNT array with the capability of being converted into continuous fi lms and yarns. The as-produced CNT fi lms are transparent and highly conductive, with aligned CNTs parallel to the direction of drawing. After passing through volatile solutions or being twisted, CNT fi lms can be further condensed into shrunk yarns. These shrunk yarns possess high tensile strengths and Young’s moduli, and are good conductors. Many applications of CNT fi lms and shrunk yarns have been demonstrated, such as TEM grids, loudspeakers, touch screens, etc.

Abstract:A flexible and elastic carbon coil (see figure) has been fabricated using a continuous yarn of carbon nanotube arrays. The processed yarn is both elastic and pliable and can be freely manipulated and molded to any desired shape that is retained after heat treatment. Owing to their highly ordered macroscopic structures, the good electrical and thermal conductivity of the nanotube components, and their good mechanical properties, these carbon nanostructures may find extensive use in a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are nano-scale tubular structures which consist of seamless cylindrical shells of graphitic sheets. They were first found by professor Sumio Iijima in the arcdischarge soot between graphite electrodes in 1991 [1]. As a newly discovered carbon allotrope, CNTs have drawn worldwide attentions by their unique electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Seven years after their discovery, CNTs were synthesized in the form of arrays by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) [2,3]. For the first time in the history, billions of CNTs were aligned in the vertical direction on a substrate, and their growth position can be controlled by catalyst pattern design [3]. In 2002, we discovered a new type of CNT array, which is named the super-aligned CNT array. This kind of array was composed of clean, straight and defectfree CNTs, and there exist strong Van de Waals forces between adjacent nanotubes. Due to this unique feature, when one picks a strand of CNTs by tweezers or adhesive tapes, continuous long yarns or films can be simply pulled out from the array [4], as shown in figure 1. This discovery had enabled us to produce macroscopic materials with pure CNTs with a quick and easy dry spin process, as shown in figure 2. In 2005, we scaled up the substrate size of the CNT arrays from 1 inch to 4 inches, which could provide CNT films as wide as 10 cm [5]. Figure 1. The mechanism of dry spinning CNT yarns and films from super-aligned CNT arrays. The CNT yarns and films are composed of sparse parallel CNTs along the pulling direction. With the large percent of the vacancy between CNTs, the as drawn films can have transparency up to 90%. Therefore, CNT films can be used as a new type of transparent conductive film which have potential applications in liquid crystal displays and touch panels. The CNT films also have superb flexibility which is desired in flexible IT products. Abstract:Carbon sp(2) building blocks such as graphene and carbon nanotubes hold great promises for structural and functional applications due to their intriguing material properties, which, unfortunately, fail to be upscaled into fibers or films as their macroscopic assemblies. The loss in performance originates from material imperfection and microstructural irregularities. From experimental evidences, we identify that their basic structural units are laminates of graphene sheets or closely-packed bundles of carbon nanotubes. Morphological corrugation and polydispersity in geometry, material properties, alignment are thus intrinsic features of their hierarchical structures in fibers or films, where loads are transferred through networks of tension-shear force chains. Microstructure-derived theoretical models are developed to accommodate these complexities and analyze overall properties. Predictions are consistent with experimental data for graphene films, where the film thickness and gauge length of samples in measurements are controlled.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate, by molecular dynamics simulations, the mechanical properties of a new carbon nanostructure, termed a graphene nanochain, constructed by sewing up pristine or twisted graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and interlocking the obtained nanorings. The obtained tensile strength of defect-free nanochain is a little lower than that of pristine GNRs and the fracture point is earlier than that of the GNRs. The effects of length, width and twist angle of the constituent GNRs on the mechanical performance are analyzed. Furthermore, defect effect is investigated and in some high defect coverage cases, an interesting mechanical strengthening-like behavior is observed. This structure supports the concept of long-cable manufacturing and advanced material design can be achieved by integration of nanochain with other nanocomposites. The technology used to construct the nanochain is experimentally feasible, inspired by the recent demonstrations of atomically precise fabrications of GNRs with complex structures [Phys. Rev. Lett., 2009, 102, 205501; Nano Lett., 2010, 10, 4328; Nature, 2010, 466, 470].

Abstract:<p>Smart systems are those that display autonomous or collaborative functionalities, and include the ability to sense multiple inputs, to respond with appropriate operations, and to control a given situation. In certain circumstances, it is also of great interest to retain flexible, stretchable, portable, wearable, and/or implantable attributes in smart electronic systems. Among the promising candidate smart materials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) exhibit excellent electrical and mechanical properties, and structurally fabricated CNT‐based fibers and yarns with coil and twist further introduce flexible and stretchable properties. A number of notable studies have demonstrated various functions of CNT yarns, including sensors, actuators, and energy storage. In particular, CNT yarns can operate as flexible electronic sensors and electrodes to monitor strain, temperature, ionic concentration, and the concentration of target biomolecules. Moreover, a twisted CNT yarn enables strong torsional actuation, and coiled CNT yarns generate large tensile strokes as an artificial muscle. Furthermore, the reversible actuation of CNT yarns can be used as an energy harvester and, when combined with a CNT supercapacitor, has promoted the next‐generation of energy storage systems. Here, progressive advances of CNT yarns in electrical sensing, actuation, and energy storage are reported, and the future challenges in smart electronic systems considered.</p>

Abstract:Joule-heating-induced electrical breakdown was applied to break suspended carbon nanotube (CNT) micro-yarns. The yarn ends at the breaking points were well-shaped sharp tips and mostly terminated by a single nanotube. The uppermost CNT was approximately 5 nm in diameter and was firmly compacted with the CNTs below it, yielding better mechanical, electrical and thermal contacts. An individual end could provide an emission current of approximately 25 µA, with potential application as a point electron source. In addition, we developed a pixel structure for a field emission display using oppositely aligned ends as the cathode and gate, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, a range of carbon nanotube yarn (CNTY) architectures was examined and controlled by chemical modification to gain a deeper understanding of CNTY load-bearing systems and produce lightweight and superstrong CNTYs. The architecture of CNTY, which has polymer layers surrounding a compact bundle without hampering the original state of the CNTs in the bundle, is a favorable design for further chemical cross-linking and for enhancing the load-transfer efficiency, as confirmed by in situ Raman spectroscopy under a stress load. The resulting CNTY exhibited excellent mechanical performance that exceeded the specific strength of the benchmark, high-performance fibers. This exceptional strength of the CNTY makes it a promising candidate for the cable of a space elevator traveling from the Earth to the International Space Station given its strength of 4.35 GPa/(g cm-3), which can withstand the self-weight of a 440 km cable.

Abstract:Studies of carbon nanotube (CNT) based composites have been unable to translate the extraordinary load-bearing capabilities of individual CNTs to macroscale composites such as yarns. A key challenge lies in the lack of understanding of how properties of filaments and interfaces across yarn hierarchical levels govern the properties of macroscale yarns. To provide insight required to enable the development of superior CNT yarns, we investigate the fabrication-structure-mechanical property relationships among CNT yarns prepared by different techniques and employ a Monte Carlo based model to predict upper bounds on their mechanical properties. We study the correlations between different levels of alignment and porosity and yarn strengths up to 2.4 GPa. The uniqueness of this experimentally informed modeling approach is the models ability to predict when filament rupture or interface sliding dominates yarn failure based on constituent mechanical properties and structural organization observed experimentally. By capturing this transition and predicting the yarn strengths that could be obtained under ideal fabrication conditions, the model provides critical insights to guide future efforts to improve the mechanical performance of CNT yarn systems. This multifaceted study provides a new perspective on CNT yarn design that can serve as a foundation for the development of future composites that effectively exploit the superior mechanical performance of CNTs.
High-performance Flexural Fatigue of Carbon Nanotube Yarns

Abstract:Carbon nanotube yarns (CNTY) possess good specific strength and specific conductivity. As such, their potential for commercial applications is significant. Fatigue performance is a significant consideration in yarn/wire applications. In this study, the flexural fatigue performance of CNTY spun from super-aligned carbon nanotube arrays was investigated using a reversed bending test. The results showed that CNTY exhibited excellent resistance to pure flexural fatigue, significantly outperforming stainless steel wire; CNTY failed where a combination of flexural fatigue and tension–tension fatigue had special hollow fracture morphology, and CNTY resistance remained fundamentally unchanged in the combination fatigue process.

Abstract:Optimizing Carbon Nanotubes Shorter carbon nanotubes are easier to make, but, when assembled into fibers, the resulting fiber properties are much poorer than might be predicted by theory. Conversely, longer carbon nanotubes have much better properties but are harder to process. Behabtu et al. (p. 182 ) combined the best of both worlds through scalable wet spinning method, in which they dissolved longer carbon nanotubes and then spun them into fibers that showed excellent strength, stiffness, and thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Carbon-nanotube (CNT) fibers integrate such properties as high mechanical strength, extraordinary structural flexibility, high thermal and electrical conductivities, novel corrosion and oxidation resistivities, and high surface area, which makes them a very promising candidate for next-generation smart textiles and wearable devices. A brief review of the preparation of CNT fibers and recently developed CNT-fiber-based flexible and functional devices, which include artificial muscles, electrochemical double-layer capacitors, lithium-ion batteries, solar cells, and memristors, is presented.

Abstract:The strength and flexibility of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) allow them to be constructed into a variety of innovated architectures with fascinating properties. Here, we show that CNTs can be made into a highly twisted yarn-derived double-helix structure by a conventional twist-spinning process. The double-helix is a stable and hierarchical configuration consisting of two single-helical yarn segments, with controlled pitch and unique mechanical properties. While one of the yarn components breaks early under tension due to the highly twisted state, the second yarn produces much larger tensile strain and significantly prolongs the process until ultimate fracture. In addition, these elastic and conductive double-helix yarns show simultaneous and reversible resistance change in response to a wide range of input sources (mechanical, photo, and thermal) such as applied strains or stresses, light illumination, and environmental temperature. Our results indicate that it is possible to create higher-level, more complex architectures from CNT yarns and fabricate multifunctional nanomaterials with potential applications in many areas.

Abstract:Nanotubes have been pursued aggressively over the last three decades. Significant progress has been made in the selective growth and post-synthetic sorting of highly monodisperse carbon nanotubes, in understanding their physics, and in assembling and integrating them into high-performance devices. These discoveries have led to promising applications in areas such as high-performance CMOS, high-speed RF, thin-film transistors, flexible electronics, thermoelectrics, sensors, and optoelectronics. The rapid development of modern information technology depends on the exploitation of new and novel materials, and nanotubes have emerged as promising candidates for the post-Moore's Law era. Abstract:Carbon nanotube functional materials (CNTFMs) represent an important research field in transforming nanoscience and nanotechnology into practical applications, with potential impact in a wide realm of science, technology, and engineering. In this review, we combine the state-of-the-art research activities of CNTFMs with the application prospect, to highlight critical issues and identify future challenges. We focus on macroscopic long fibers, thin films, and bulk sponges which are typical CNTFMs in different dimensions with distinct characteristics, and also cover a variety of derived composite/hierarchical materials. Critical issues related to their structures, properties, and applications as robust conductive skeletons or high-performance flexible electrodes in mechanical and electronic devices, advanced energy conversion and storage systems, and environmental areas have been discussed specifically. Finally, possible solutions and directions are proposed for overcoming current obstacles and promoting future efforts in the field.
