Abstract:Carbon nanofibers as constructed from various one-dimensional carbon nanostructure, such as sp(3) diamond nanowire, sp(2) carbon nanotubes, and carbyne, have received enormous interest from both scientific and engineering communities. The newly synthesized nanostructure carbon nanothreads (C_NTH) show superior properties and make them ideal building blocks for high-performance carbon nanofibers. This work systematically investigates the torsional properties of C_NTH bundles through high-throughput large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show that the torsional behavior of C_NTH bundles depends strongly on the loading direction. By adjusting the enantiomer ratios, we can effectively tune the mechanical properties of the bundle structure, including the strain energy density, elastic limit, and torsional rigidity. Benefiting from their rich structural varieties, this work suggests that carbon nanothreads are promising candidates for the next-generation high-performance carbon nanofiber.

Abstract:A flexible and elastic carbon coil (see figure) has been fabricated using a continuous yarn of carbon nanotube arrays. The processed yarn is both elastic and pliable and can be freely manipulated and molded to any desired shape that is retained after heat treatment. Owing to their highly ordered macroscopic structures, the good electrical and thermal conductivity of the nanotube components, and their good mechanical properties, these carbon nanostructures may find extensive use in a wide range of applications.

Abstract:We report a simple and continuous spinning method that combines twisting and shrinking processes to produce carbon nanotube yarns. In this method, a yarn freshly spun from a super-aligned carbon nanotube array is first twisted and then passes through a volatile solvent for shrinking. The as-produced yarn consists of densely packed carbon nanotubes, and thus has a tensile strength up to about 1 GPa. The tensile strength depends on the diameter and the twisting angle of the yarn. Different kinds of solvents, such as water, ethanol, and acetone, are used to shrink the twisted yarns, and acetone shows the best shrinking effect. The origin of the solvent shrinking effect is investigated. Our method is favorable for continuous mass production of high strength carbon nanotube yarns with a wide range of diameters, especially ultra-thin yarns.

Abstract:Biologically derived hierarchical structural materials not only boast energy‐efficient processing but also exhibit impressive mechanical performance. Silk stands as the gold standard in hierarchical fiber production, leveraging a unique combination of advantages. Nevertheless, the artificial replication of silk poses technical challenges related to precision processing and comprehensive molecular control. To address such issues, this study investigates the hierarchical assembly of solid regenerated silk in an air atmosphere, facilitated by the incorporation of carbon nanotube (CNT) seeding. Results obtained highlight that this CNT seeding facilitates multiscale structure development in response to post‐spin tensile stress. Such CNT bridged structure assembly bypasses some natural processing control variables (pH, ions) and the necessary solvent immersed state for conventional silk post‐drawing. Combining secondary electron hyperspectral imaging and 3D synchrotron X‐ray ptychotomography, this study reports silk protein conversion from a disordered as‐spun state to a longitudinal orientated semi‐crystalline nano structure during drawing. The development of microscale structure during the drawing process is attributed to the presence of CNTs, yielding mechanical properties comparable to, and frequently surpassing, those exhibited by native fibers. These findings collectively propose a framework for exploring novel processing routes and offer a practical means controlling self‐assembly in silk materials.
Wet Twisting in Spinning for Rapid and Cost‐Effective Fabrication of Superior Carbon Nanotube Yarns

Abstract:Highly densified CNT yarns with good mechanical, electrical, and electrothermal properties are manufactured by a continuously twisting method while the yarn is still wet. This strategy is expected to facilitate the large‐scale preparation of CNT yarns and their application in smart devices in the near future. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are promising blocks for building advanced yarns with unique structural and functional attributes. However, the complexity of fabrication and high cost has hindered the widespread adoption of CNT yarns. In this study, a rapid and continuous twisting wet spun yarn strategy to produce highly densified CNT yarns is presented. The method involves effectively dispersing CNTs in the surfactant dispersion, swiftly removing the surfactant in the coagulation bath and twisting treatment to effectively improve the density of yarn and the orientation of CNT. Detailed characterizations on the influence of each spinning conditions reveal that twisting treatment significantly enhances the packing density of yarns, improves the orientation of CNTs, and mitigates the impact of impurities on conductivity. The resulting CNT yarns exhibit a remarkable tensile strength of 600 MPa, a Young's modulus of ≈40 GPa, and a high conductivity of 8990 S cm−1. When utilized as a yarn heater, the CNT yarn demonstrates an ultra‐fast electrothermal response of over 1000 °C s−1 at a low operating voltage of 5 V. Impressively, the mechanical properties of CNT yarns show good stability during heating. This study provides a perspective of structural engineering for the large‐scale preparation of high‐performance CNT yarns.

Abstract:The strength and flexibility of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) allow them to be constructed into a variety of innovated architectures with fascinating properties. Here, we show that CNTs can be made into a highly twisted yarn-derived double-helix structure by a conventional twist-spinning process. The double-helix is a stable and hierarchical configuration consisting of two single-helical yarn segments, with controlled pitch and unique mechanical properties. While one of the yarn components breaks early under tension due to the highly twisted state, the second yarn produces much larger tensile strain and significantly prolongs the process until ultimate fracture. In addition, these elastic and conductive double-helix yarns show simultaneous and reversible resistance change in response to a wide range of input sources (mechanical, photo, and thermal) such as applied strains or stresses, light illumination, and environmental temperature. Our results indicate that it is possible to create higher-level, more complex architectures from CNT yarns and fabricate multifunctional nanomaterials with potential applications in many areas.

Abstract:Introducing twists into carbon nanotube yarns could produce hierarchical architectures and extend their application areas. Here, we utilized such twists to produce elastic strain sensors over large strain (up to 500%) and rotation actuators with high energy density. We show that a helical nanotube yarn can be overtwisted into highly entangled, macroscopically random but locally organized structures, consisting of mostly double-helix segments intertwined together. Pulling the yarn ends completely resolved the entanglement in an elastic and reversible way, yielding large tensile strains with linear change in electrical resistance. Resolving an entangled yarn and releasing its twists could simultaneously rotate a heavy object (30 000 times the yarn weight) for more than 1000 cycles at high speed. The rotational actuation generated from a single entangled yarn produced energy densities up to 8.3 kJ/kg, and maintained similar capacity during repeated use. Our entangled CNT yarns represent a complex self-assembled system with applications as large-range strain sensors and robust rotational actuators.

Abstract:Defects of carbon nanotubes, weak tube-tube interactions, and weak carbon nanotube joints are bottlenecks for obtaining high-strength carbon nanotube yarns. Some solution processes are usually required to overcome these drawbacks. Here we fabricate ultra-long and densely packed pure carbon nanotube yarns by a two-rotator twisting setup with the aid of some tensioning rods. The densely packed structure enhances the tube-tube interactions, thus making high tensile strengths of carbon nanotube yarns up to 1.6 GPa. We further use a sweeping laser to thermally treat as-produced yarns for recovering defects of carbon nanotubes and possibly welding carbon nanotube joints, which improves their Young's modulus by up to ∼70%. The spinning and laser sweeping processes are solution-free and capable of being assembled together to produce high-strength yarns continuously as desired.

Abstract:A simple and scalable drawing-drying process for spinning pure double walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) fibers out of DWNT cotton is reported (see figure). Fibers with lengths up to tens of centimeters can be spun, and these fibers possess high mechanical strength. Field emission and electrochemical tests performed on individual DWNT fibers reveal the possibility of using the DWNT fibers as components in various device architectures.

Abstract:Exploiting the superior properties of nanomaterials at macroscopic scale is a key issue of nanoscience. Different from the integration strategy, "additive synthesis" of macroscopic structures from nanomaterial templates may be a promising choice. In this paper, we report the epitaxial growth of aligned, continuous, and catalyst-free carbon nanofiber thin films from carbon nanotube films. The fabrication process includes thickening of continuous carbon nanotube films by gas-phase pyrolytic carbon deposition and further graphitization of the carbon layer by high-temperature treatment. As-fabricated nanofibers in the film have an "annual ring" cross-section, with a carbon nanotube core and a graphitic periphery, indicating the templated growth mechanism. The absence of a distinct interface between the carbon nanotube template and the graphitic periphery further implies the epitaxial growth mechanism of the fiber. The mechanically robust thin film with tunable fiber diameters from tens of nanometers to several micrometers possesses low density, high electrical conductivity, and high thermal conductivity. Further extension of this fabrication method to enhance carbon nanotube yarns is also demonstrated, resulting in yarns with ∼4-fold increased tensile strength and ∼10-fold increased Young's modulus. The aligned and continuous features of the films together with their outstanding physical and chemical properties would certainly promote the large-scale applications of carbon nanofibers.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn was drawn directly from super aligned CNT arrays synthesized by an improved floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition method. The synthesis of aligned CNT was performed as a multi-step interim reactant supply reaction to produce a double-layered CNT array in a horizontal quartz tube reactor. During the growth period, most impurities were blocked on the top surface of the first layer and therefore the top aligned CNT layer was unspinnable. However, the bottom CNT layer was super aligned CNTs, which were with clean surface and a tortuosity factor of 1.07. During the dry spinning process, the tangles, friction, and van der Waals interaction between CNTs served to hold them into CNT yarns. The tensile strength of the as-obtained CNT yarn can be further improved from 0.24 to 0.30GPa by twisting.

Abstract:Owing to the intrinsic excellent mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) have been expected to become promising candidates for the next-generation of high-performance fibers. They have received considerable interest for cutting-edge applications, such as ultra-light electric wire, aerospace craft, military equipment, and space elevators. Wet-spinning is a broadly utilized commercial technique for high-performance fiber manufacturing. Thus, compared with array spinning from drawable CNTs vertical array and direct dry spinning from floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD), the wet-spinning technique is considered to be a promising strategy to realize the production of CNTFs on a large scale. In this tutorial review, we begin with a summative description of CNTFs wet-spinning process. Then, we discuss the high-concentration CNTs wet-spinning dope preparation strategies and corresponding non-covalent adsorption/charge transfer mechanisms. The filament solidification during the coagulation process is another critical procedure for determining the configurations and properties for derived CNTFs. Next, we discuss post-treatment, including continuous drafting and thermal annealing, to further optimize the CNTs orientation and compact configuration. Finally, we summarize the physical property-structure relationship to give insights for further performance promotion in order to satisfy the prerequisite for detailed application. Insights into propelling high-performance CNTFs production from lab-scale to industry-scale are proposed, in anticipation of this novel fiber having an impact on our lives in the near future.

Abstract:Conventional straight fibers spun from carbon nanotubes have rather limited deformability; creating a spiral structure holds the promise to break this shape restriction and enhance structural flexibility. Here, we report up to one meter length threads containing purely single-walled nanotubes twisted into spiral loops (about 1.3 X 10(5) loops per meter) with tunable fiber diameters and electrical conductivity. Because of significant increase of the loop number and long-range homogeneity, the fibers display many unique properties (e.g., self-shrinking and forming extremely entangled structure, fast stretching with great resilience, large-degree axial and lateral deflection, and excellent fatigue resistance) that are difficult to achieve in straight yarns or short helical segments. They also have potential applications as macroscopic fiber-shaped temperature sensors and deformable gas sensors. Our long spiral fibers may be configured into versatile structures such as nanotextiles for developing wearable electronics and multifunctional fabrics.

Abstract:A superaligned carbon nanotube (CNT) array is a special kind of vertically aligned CNT array with the capability of being converted into continuous fi lms and yarns. The as-produced CNT fi lms are transparent and highly conductive, with aligned CNTs parallel to the direction of drawing. After passing through volatile solutions or being twisted, CNT fi lms can be further condensed into shrunk yarns. These shrunk yarns possess high tensile strengths and Young’s moduli, and are good conductors. Many applications of CNT fi lms and shrunk yarns have been demonstrated, such as TEM grids, loudspeakers, touch screens, etc.

Abstract:The direct-spinning method of creation of CNT macroassemblies has received a lot of attention because of its simplicity to produce high-performance material without apparent limits to its size. CNT fibers or films have shown unparalleled properties and opened new areas of research and commercial development. The process designed more than a decade ago has already given interesting information about the basic science of nanomaterials, which in parallel led to the creation of the first prototypes with high potential of implementation in everyday life. Because of this, there has been growing interest in this technique with research articles coming into view from all around the world on a frequent basis. This review aims to summarize all the progress made in the direct-spinning process on a spectrum of fronts ranging from the study of complex synthesis parameters, material properties to its viable applications. The strong and weak points of the "Cambridge process" are carefully evaluated to put forward what challenges are most pressing. The future overlook puts the state of the art into perspective and suggests the prospective research directions.

Abstract:Optimizing Carbon Nanotubes Shorter carbon nanotubes are easier to make, but, when assembled into fibers, the resulting fiber properties are much poorer than might be predicted by theory. Conversely, longer carbon nanotubes have much better properties but are harder to process. Behabtu et al. (p. 182 ) combined the best of both worlds through scalable wet spinning method, in which they dissolved longer carbon nanotubes and then spun them into fibers that showed excellent strength, stiffness, and thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Macroscale carbon nanotube (CNT) architectures such as films and fibers have superior properties and promising application prospects. We synthesize large-area transparent, highly conductive and strong single-walled carbon nanotube(SWNT) films through floating catalyst CVD method, and perform series researches to their physical properties. The correlation between the properties of films and fibers with that of individual carbon nanotubes is also explored. Based on the synthesized SWNT films, macroscale SWNT fibers are fabricated through a twisting process. We record the Raman spectra when the films and fibers are strained, and analyze the micromechanical process based on the change of G' Raman mode, propose the concept of strain transfer factor and its influence on the mechanical performance of macroscale SWNT architectures. By infiltrating polymer molecules into the interspace of the continuous carbon nanotube network, we fabricate novel high-strength composite fibers. Their mechanical properties are tested and correlated with the micromechanical process. We compare the microscale load-transfer manner of such continuous CNT network based composite with that of discrete CNT reinforced composites, and point out the invalidity of rule of mixture coming from traditional composite theory when it is used to predict the mechanical properties of CNT reinforced composites.

Abstract:Light-weight and multifunctional carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn possessing outstanding mechanical properties as individual CNTs is highly desirable in the field of smart textiles as well as multifunctional composites, yet remains exceptionally challenging to be obtained because of the loose packing of CNTs within the carbon nanotube assemblies resulting in a low density and weak interaction between the individual CNTs. Herein, we utilized a simple but effective technique to densify CNT yarn by compression using acetone (wet compression) to attain high mechanical properties along with extraordinary Joule heating presentation. Owing to having a low surface tension, acetone is easy to be penetrated into the CNT fibers and acts as a lubricant decreasing the interactions between the neighboring CNTs under load. Therefore, the CNT yarn was condensed in density from 0.211 to 0.465 gm/cm3 (120% increment) with the diameter of 175 ± 5 μm. Subsequently, the tensile strength, modulus, electrical conductivity, and gauge factor of wet-compressed CNT yarn were amplified by 185, 887.5, 105, and 305%, respectively, along with a proper reliability and stability for sensing performance. The as-produced CNT yarn reached a brilliant electrothermal stability (∼2.5 min) at the steady-state temperature of 275 °C only within 15 s, even under various deformations (bending and knotting). The outstanding strength with the controlled diameter and admirable Joule heating performance of wet-compressed CNT yarn is aimed for multifunctional uses, including but not limited to wearable electronics, smart textiles, and therapy devices, as well as for incorporation in fabric heaters.
