Abstract:This note deals with the design of reduced-order observers for Lipschitz nonlinear systems. It shows that the conditions under which a full-order observer exists also guarantee the existence of a reduced-order observer. A design method of the reduced-order observer that is dependent on the solution of the Riccati equation is then presented and an example is given to illustrate effects of the design method.

Abstract:We consider the problem of state observation for systems having a well-defined observability canonical form (Gauthier and Kupka (2004)) by means of high-gain observers. The main goal is to show that, for this class of systems, observers can be designed with the high-gain parameter powered just up to the order 2 regardless the dimension of the state system. In this way we substantially overtake the main limitations of standard design procedures in which the high-gain parameter is powered up to the order of the system. The observer structure, which generalizes the ideas presented in Astolfi and Marconi (2015), can be used in all those contexts where fast state observation is required, such as in the design of output feedback stabilizers by means of the nonlinear separation principle that is also specifically addressed in the paper.

Abstract:The observer design for nonlinear singular systems is discussed. First, for an index-one nonlinear singular systems, the stability and asymptotical stability with positive semi-definite Lyapunov functions are analyzed. Then, for nonlinear singular systems composed of linear and Lipschitz nonlinear terms, some sufficient conditions are proposed for the existence of asymptotically stable observer system. An algorithm is developed to calculate the observer gain, converting the original problem into admissible control of a linear singular system and the calculation of minimum singular value of the correspondingly closed system. It is proven that if the minimum singular value is greater than the Lipschitz constant of the nonlinear singular system, the admissible controller gain can serve as the observer gain.

Abstract:The problem concerning observer error linearization is to find a new state coordinate transformation (diffeomorphism) to transform the underlying nonlinear system into a Partial Observer Canonical Form (POCF). Since the complexity of the existing verification conditions associated with the existence of POCF, this paper develops a two-steps method for calculating POCF to simplify the verification conditions. This method also shows that POCF is equivalent to a compound diffeomorphism that consists of two coordinate transformations. One of them is a diffeomorphism which transforms the system into an observable canonical form based on maximum invariant distribution, and the other one is a diffeomorphism of transforming the observable subsystem into an observer linearization form. With the help of this method, a part of the original conditions are replaced by a group of new conditions that are easier to be verified, and another part of the original conditions are proved to be redundant and could not be verified anymore. At last, three examples are used to demonstrate the validity of this paper.

Abstract:A symmetry-preserving, reduced-order state observer is presented for the unmeasured part of a system's state, where the nonlinear system dynamics exhibit symmetry under the action of a Lie group. The proposed observer takes advantage of this symmetry through the use of a moving frame that constructs invariant mappings of the measurements. Sufficient conditions for the observer to be asymptotically stable are developed by studying the stability of an invariant error system. As an illustrative example, the observer is applied to the problem of rigid-body velocity estimation, which demonstrate how exploiting the symmetry of the system can simplify the stabilization of the estimation error dynamics.

Abstract:This note considers the reduced-order observer of Lur'e differential inclusion systems. The set-valued mappings in the differential inclusions are maximal monotone, but may not be compact and bounded. It is verified that if there exists a full-order observer, then there is also a reduced-order observer. The construction of the observer as well as the convergence and well-posedness of the observer are presented. An example is provided to illustrate the validation of the reduced-order observer.

Abstract:The issue of designing a type of generalized Luenberger observers for matrix second- order linear (MSOL) systems was addressed in the matrix second-order framework. By introducing the concept of stable matrix pair for MSOL systems, sufficient and necessary conditions for the design of the type of generalized Luenberger observers were given under the assumption of controllability and observability of the MSOL system. Based on the proposed conditions and the right coprime factorization of the system, a parametric approach to the design of such type of observers was presented. The proposed approach provides all the degrees of design freedom, which can be further utilized to achieve additional system specifications. A spring-mass system was utilized to show the effect of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the problem of designing functional observers for linear time-invariant (LTI) descriptor systems. The observers are realized by using state-space systems governed by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Available existence results for functional ODE observers in the literature are extended by introducing new and milder sufficient conditions. These conditions are purely algebraic and provided directly in terms of the system coefficient matrices. The proposed observer has an order less than or equal to the dimension of the functional vector to be estimated. The observer parameter matrices are obtained by using simple matrix theory, and the design algorithm is illustrated by numerical examples.

Abstract:The observability of nonlinear systems was considered in this note. First, we reviewed the definitions and relations of observable, locally observable, weakly observable, locally weakly observable, uniformly locally weakly observable and completely uniformly locally weakly observable. Then, a sufficient condition under which a multi-output nonlinear system is completely uniformly locally weakly observable was given. The sufficient condition becomes necessary and sufficient condition when the system is single-output. We also gave a canonical form of these multi-output systems. In the end, an example illustrated how to use the given sufficient conditions to determine whether a nonlinear system is completely uniformly locally weakly observable.

Abstract:Observer design is considered for a class of non-linear systems whose non-linear part is energy preserving. A strategy to construct convergent observers for this class of non-linear system is presented. The approach has the advantage that it is possible, via convex programming, to prove whether the constructed observer converges, in contrast to several existing approaches to observer design for non-linear systems. Finally, the developed methods are applied to the Lorenz attractor and to a low order model for shear fluid flow.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with observer design approaches for a class of incommensurate fractional systems. The continuous frequency distributed state model is employed to represent fractional systems. By using a specific Lyapunov function, the sufficient conditions to guarantee asymptotical stability of fractional observer error dynamics are derived for both linear and nonlinear fractional systems with incommensurate orders. Finally, two numerical examples for linear and nonlinear fractional systems are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the distributed estimation problem for continuous-time linear time-invariant (LTI) systems. A single linear plant is observed by a network of local observers. Each local observer in the network has access to only part of the output of the observed system, but also receives information on the state estimates of its neighbors.Each local observer should in this way generate an estimate of the plant state. In this paper we study the problem of existence of a reduced order distributed observer. We show that if the observed system is observable and the network graph is a strongly connected directed graph, then a distributed observer exists with state space dimension equal to Nn−∑i=1Npi, where N is the number of network nodes, n is the state space dimension of the observed plant, and pi is the rank of the output matrix of the observed output received by the ith local observer. In the case of a single observer, this result specializes to the well-known minimal order observer in classical observer design.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with functional observers for two-dimensional (2D) systems described by the Fornasini–Marchesini local state-space second model. A necessary and sufficient condition is given for the existence of asymptotic functional observers. A more tractable necessary condition for the existence of asymptotic functional observers is also presented, as it helps exclude those 2D systems for which there is no asymptotic functional observer. A constructive design method is then proposed for the design of asymptotic functional observers using a rank condition on the given system matrices and a linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique. Two illustrative examples are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:The concept of irreducibility of MFD's at infinity is introduced. By merely considering common divisors at infinity, this concept turns out to be a complement of the well-known irreducibility for MFD's. A combination of these two naturally leads to the notion of complete irreducibility. The second part of the paper is devoted to show that for a so-called pseudo-proper MFD, a block controllable singular system realization can be obtained such that (1). the order of the realized singular system is equal to the generalized determinantal degree of the denominator (GDDD) of this MFD; (2). the realization is controllable; (3). it will be observable if and only if the MFD is completely irreducible. In the final part of the paper, we show that for an arbitrary MFD, any of its nth-order singular system realization (n is GDDD) will be jointly controllable and observable if and only if the MFD is completely irreducible, which is an interesting counterpart of the case for regular systems.
