Abstract:We demonstrate a novel photorefractive incoherent-to-coherent optical converter in which there is a ∼45° angle between the propagation direction of the incoherent image and the grating vector. Thus the number of the grating periods in one pixel is large even for a very high resolution. When the output image has the same direction with the incoherent incident beam, the resolution does not depend on the interaction length between the incoherent beam and the grating. A resolution as high as 283 line pairs/mm, which is the resolution of out projection system, is obtained for a one-dimensional resolution target. Two-dimensional incoherent-to-coherent conversion is also demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate that high-resolution incoherent-to-coherent conversion can be carried out in an incoherent-to-coherent converter based on the photorefractive fanning effect. The output coherent image has the same direction as the incident coherent beam, and thus the resolution is not limited by the grating diffraction. We obtained a resolution as high as 90.5 line pairs/mm in this experiment. The transmittance of the coherent beam relative to the intensity of the incoherent beam was measured. We also theoretically estimated the resolving power with respect to the interaction length. The numerical results agree well with the experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, we calculate the resolution of a photorefractive incoherent-to-coherent optical converter on the image plane for small diffraction efficiency by taking into account the optical imaging characteristics of the imaging lens. For a thin grating, we obtain a high resolution, which is comparable with the experimental results.

Abstract:We present a technique of photorefractiveffects for white-light incoherent-to-coherent conversion and oneway image transmission through a thick turbulent medium. A high resolution photorefractive incoherent-tocoherent optical converter was realized even for white light transmission by applying the same technique as we used in incoherent laser beam transmission. Analogical reconstructed laser images with high-fidelity were obtained, correcting the image blurring due to the thick turbulent medium.

Abstract:High-performance image-forming systems often require high system complexity due to the overdetermined nature of optical aberration correction. What we present here is a novel computational imaging modality which can achieve high-performance imaging using a simple non-image-forming optical system. The presented optical system contains an aspherical non-imaging lens which is designed with the optimal transfer of light radiation between an object and a detector. All spatial frequencies of the object collected by the non-imaging lens are delivered to the detector. No image is formed on the detector, and a full-path optical diffraction calculation method is developed to recover a high-quality image of the object from multiple intensity measurements. The effectiveness and high performance of the proposed imaging modality is verified by the examples.

Abstract:The rapid development of single-photon detection technology offers the possibility for an imaging system to go beyond traditional limits. Recently, single-photon imagers based on the upconversion technique have achieved unprecedentedly high resolution and noise tolerance in 3-D imaging. Nevertheless, the limited imaging range, complicated optical path, and long data acquisition time impose remaining challenges to practical applications. In this work, we build an upconversion single-photon imager for full-range and accurate 3-D imaging. A compact all-fiber design allows our system to work robustly in an open environment. Compared to the previous imagers, the imaging speed is increased by three orders of magnitude due to the high upconversion efficiency and photon-efficient algorithm. With the application of a high-repetition laser and a nanosecond optical delay line (ODL), we achieve full-range imaging under the upconversion scheme against high solar background noise. For close-up scenes, our imager achieves ultrahigh axial resolution up to 20 mu m, which is not affected by the time jitter or pileup effect of the single-photon detector. Our proposal can stimulate practical applications in sophisticated scenarios.

Abstract:This paper proposed a diffractive imaging technology called rotary astigmatic diffractive imaging (RADI). The system uses a rotatable cylindrical lens for rotary astigmatic modulation and a camera for collecting the diffractive patterns distorted in different angles. Then a field can be reconstructed with the patterns by an iterative algorithm. Compared with the original astigmatic diffractive imaging system, our simulations show RADI system has the greater performance of convergence with the same number of constrained patterns. In addition, it is easy for RADI to increase the number of diffraction measurements to accelerate the convergence further. Considering the center of the cylindrical lens does not coincide with the center of rotation, a calibration method is proposed. An optical vortex of charge two is reconstructed experimentally demonstrating the system can solve the problem of unique phase recovery. Besides, the reconstructions of a USAF resolution chart with different numbers of constrained patterns shows the rate of convergence increases obviously with the increase of the number of diffraction measurements. The reconstruction shows the resolution of our system is about 14.25 lp/mm, which is 60% of the diffraction limited resolution. Our RADI can provide a high-performance way but with simple setup to realize field reconstruction.
Photorefractive Spatial Mode Converter for Multimode-to-single-mode Fiber-Optic Coupling.

Abstract:We report what is to our knowledge the first experimental demonstration of a photorefractive spatial mode converter (based on mutually pumped phase conjugation) that couples light efficiently from a multimode fiber into a singlemode fiber with an extremely large degree of tolerance to misalignment. Using an argon laser (514.5 nm) and a barium titanate crystal, we have demonstrated that the laser light can be coupled from a multimode fiber (core diameter 100 microm, numerical aperture 0.37) into a single-mode fiber (core diameter 2.9 microm, numerical aperture 0.11), with an efficiency of ~15% and an alignment tolerance of ~100 microm. The coupling efficiency is more than 2 orders of magnitude, and the tolerance to misalignments is more than 30 times better than the corresponding values achievable by conventional techniques.

Abstract:. We present the numerical results of the photorefractive two-wave mixing in the presence of an incoherent beam by considering the influence of the ratios of the intensities and the light-excitation cross sections of the incoherent beam to the coherent beams on the space-charge field and the effective coupling coefficient. The results show that the incoherent beam can control the intensity of the coherent beams effectively. The experimental results agree with the theory well. One application is demonstrated to obtain the positive and negative coherent replicas of an incoherent image. The coherent images have a resolution of 80.6 line pairs/mm.

Abstract:Developments in photonic chips have spurred photon based classical and quantum information processing, attributing to the high stability and scalability of integrated photonic devices [1, 2]. Optical nonlinearity [3] is indispensable in these complex photonic circuits, because it allows for classical and quantum light sources, all-optical switch, modulation, and non-reciprocity in ambient environments. It is commonly known that nonlinear interactions are often greatly enhanced in the microcavities [4]. However, the manifestations of coherent photon-photon interaction in a cavity, analogous to the electromagnetically induced transparency [5], have never been reported on an integrated platform. Here, we present an experimental demonstration of the coherent photon-photon interaction induced by second order optical nonlinearity (\chi^{(2)} ) on an aluminum nitride photonic chip. The non-reciprocal nonlinear optic induced transparency is demonstrated as a result of the coherent interference between photons with different colors: ones in the visible wavelength band and ones in the telecom wavelength band. Furthermore, a wide-band frequency conversion with an almost unit internal (0.14 external) efficiency and a bandwidth up to 0.76\,\mathrm{GHz} is demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new construction of an optical analog-to-digital converter in photonic crystals structure. The proposed structure consists of a Y-branch and three cavities based on nonlinear Kerr effect with different resonant modes in array of 37 × 19 dielectric rods. This effect allows resonant modes of cavities to be shifted to lower frequencies, which means their optical behavior depends on the intensities of optical input. One input and two output ports in a structure composed of silicon rods surrounded by air result in the desired binary output values. The normalized output power threshold for logic 0 and 1 are assumed 10% and 50%, respectively. The total footprint and the sampling rate for the proposed structure are approximately equal to 253 µm<sup>2</sup> and 600 GS/s, respectively. This novel structure works in 1550 nm, and all the simulations and calculations are done based on finite-different time domain and plane wave expansion methods.

Abstract:A novel digital-to-analog converter based on multi-wavelength pulse source is proposed and primarily demonstrated by experiment. The multi-wavelength pulse train which has been pretreated is separated in time domain through dispersion. The pulse of different wavelength corresponds to the input digital data. Only one electro-optical modulator is needed in the scheme. In the primary experiment, a 3-bit photonic digital-to-analog converter with a sample rate of 2.5 Gb/s is realized. The scheme is simple and compact compared with the scheme using multiple electro-optical modulators.

Abstract:In all-optical wavelength converters based on highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF), the longer fibers always have lower Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) threshold power. In the paper, we proposed an all-optical wavelength converter with increasing SBS threshold by cascading two different HNLFs. Abstract:We have proposed an optical information processing technique by synthesis of the optical coherence function utilizing direct frequency modulation of a laser diode. In the former system, however, a silver halide holographic plate was used, so wet developing process was required. In this letter, real-time holography is adopted by using a liquid crystal spatial light modulator, which enables real-time processing. This system does not require any mechanically moving part nor electrical calculation in the processing procedure. Selective extraction of a 2-dimensional image from a 3-dimensional object is successfully demonstrated in real-time.

Abstract:As a novel nanomaterial, the TiN/Ti3C2 heterojunction has been demonstrated to possess exceptional optoelectronic properties, offering significant potential for applications in fields such as communication, optical sensors, and image processing. The rapid evolution of the internet demands higher communication capacity and information processing speed. In this context, all-optical wavelength conversion, a pivotal technique in all-optical signal processing, holds paramount importance in overcoming electronic bottlenecks, enhancing wavelength utilization, resolving wavelength competition, and mitigating network congestion. Utilizing the idle light generated through the four-wave mixing (FWM) process accurately mimics the bit patterns of signal channels. This process is inherently rapid and theoretically capable of surpassing electronic bottlenecks with ease. By placing an optical filter at the fiber output end to allow idle light passage while blocking pump and signal light, the output becomes a wavelength-converted replica of the original bitstream. It has been verified that TiN/Ti3C2 heterojunction-coated microfiber (THM) exhibits outstanding third-order nonlinear coefficients. Building upon this, we achieved a THM-enhanced FWM all-optical wavelength converter, resulting in a ~4.48 dB improvement in conversion efficiency. Compared to conventional high-nonlinear fibers, this compact device significantly reduces fiber length and can be easily integrated into current high-speed optical communication networks. It demonstrates broad prospects in the realms of all-optical signal processing, robotic applications, ultra-high-speed communication, and beyond.

High-Resolution Computed Tomography of Refractive Index Distribution by Transillumination Low-Coherence Interferometry

Abstract:We present a method to image refractive index distribution within a sample across 8 mm dimension with high spatial resolution by a transmission low-coherence interferometer. The relative strong forward-scattering light is collected, from which the parallel projections of refractive indices within the sample are obtained. A convolution backprojection algorithm is used to transform the projection data set recorded at sufficient angular views into the spatial distribution of refractive indices within the sample. We experimentally demonstrate this method by imaging a phantom. We show that this method can achieve a precision of 0.01 in determining the refractive index and a spatial resolution of 40 mu m. Abstract:Modern information networks are built on hybrid systems working at disparate optical wavelengths.Coherent interconnects for converting photons between different wavelengths are highly desired. Although coherent interconnects have conventionally been realized with nonlinear optical effects, those systems require demanding experimental conditions, such as phase matching and/or cavity enhancement, which not only bring difficulties in experimental implementation but also set a narrow tuning bandwidth（typically in the MHz to GHz range as determined by the cavity linewidth）. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate coherent information transfer between two orthogonally propagating light beams of disparate wavelengths in a fiber-based optomechanical system, which does not require phase matching or cavity enhancement of the pump beam. The coherent process is demonstrated by interference phenomena similar to optomechanically induced transparency and absorption. Our scheme not only significantly simplifies the experimental implementation of coherent wavelength conversion but also extends the tuning bandwidth to that of an optical fiber（tens of THz）, which will enable a broad range of coherent-optics-based applications,such as optical sensing, spectroscopy, and communication.
