Abstract:This paper investigates the distributed filtering problem for sensor networks with energy constraint and filter gain variation. Firstly, two strategies are proposed to reduce energy consumption, i.e., the measurement size and the transmission rate reduction strategies. To reduce the measurement size, a useful measurement selection policy is introduced to choose which element of local measurements is transmitted. The selected measurement, which has a smaller size than the original one is then stochastically transmitted. In order to reflect the imprecision in filter implementation, the additive filter gain variation problem is considered. Based on the switched system approach and some stochastic system analysis methods, a sufficient condition is obtained such that the filtering error system is exponentially stable in the mean-square sense, and a prescribed H∞ performance level is guaranteed. Filter gains are shown to be determined by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, a simulation example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design.

Abstract:A Large-scale Wireless Sensor Network (LWSN). such as an environment monitoring system deployed in a city, could yield data on the order of petabytes each year. Storage and computation of such vast quantities of data pose difficult challenges to the LWSN, particularly because sensors are highly constrained by their scarce resources. Distributed storage and parallel processing are solutions that deal with the massive amount of data by utilizing the collective computational power of the large number of sensors, all while keeping inter-node communication minimized to save energy. In this chapter, we conduct a survey on the state-of-the-art of distributed storage and parallel processing in LWSNs. We will focus on the LWSN scenario in which vast amounts of data are collected prior to intensive computation on that data. We argue that current research results in this direction fall into three categories: 1) hierarchical system architecture to support parallel and distributed computation; 2) distributed data aggregation and storage strategies; 3) parallel processing, scheduling and programming methods. We highlight some important results for each of these categories and discuss existing problems and future directions.

Abstract:Wireless sensor network is data-centric signal processing system. In this paper, the concept of Collaborative Signal and Information Processing (CSIP) is proposed for the requirements of signal processing in target tracking. The experiments for evaluating CSIP based on MICA2 and PDA platform were designed, and (m, k)-firm based scheduling scheme was adopted. Experimental results reveal that the (m, k)-firm based scheme is more effective in decreasing the information loss-rate and reducing the signal distortion than EDF.

Abstract:A vector quantizer is a system for encoding the original data to reduce the bits needed for communication and storage saving while maintaining the necessary fidelity of the data. Signal processing over distributed network has received a lot of attention in recent years, due to the rapid development of sensor network. Gathering data to a central processing node is usually infeasible for sensor network due to limited communication resource and power. As a kind of data compression methods, vector quantization is an appealing technique for distributed network signal processing. In this paper, we develop two distributed vector quantization algorithms based on the Linde-Buzo-Gray (LBG) algorithm and the self-organization map (SOM). In our algorithms, each node processes the local data and transmits the local processing results to its neighbors. Each node then fuses the information from the neighbors. Our algorithms remarkably reduce the communication complexity compared with traditional algorithms processing all the distributed data in one central fusion node. Simulation results show that both of the proposed distributed algorithms have good performance.

Abstract:This paper proposed distributed and simplified distributive wavelet data compression algorithm basing on lifting factorization for reducing transmission energy consumption in wireless sensor network, where each of the sensors has limited power. Simplified lifting scheme, parallel and distributed computing is been introduced to eliminate extra transmissions and reduce computation complexity in every sensor node that wavelet transform needed. This approach can exploit the inherent correlations that exist between sensor readings and significantly reduce transmission costs. The simulation results showed that the proposed method perform well in energy saving without sacrificing the quality of the data reconstruction.

Abstract:Frequency estimation is a common problem in a variety of applications. In recent years, adaptive notch filtering methods have been widely adopted for solving frequency estimation problems. For frequency estimation performed by a single node, the sampling time may not be long enough, the sampling rate may not be high enough, and the noise effect may be serious. In such situations, most existing algorithms for frequency estimation can not produce accurate enough results. Here, we propose using wireless sensor networks for sampling data distributedly, and using distributed notch filtering method for dealing with this problem. In particular, we propose two distributed algorithms over sensor network, a least mean square-based distributed notch filtering (dNF) algorithm and a total least square-based dNF algorithm. The communication cost of the new proposed algorithms is low, as each node exchanges only with its neighbors the estimates other than the original data. The proposed algorithms are applied to both synthetic and real examples. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the new proposed algorithms.

Abstract:The main goal of wireless sensor networks is to collect information from the target environment through a large number of micro sensor nodes. However, the constrained resource on each senor node brings great challenges to the information processing procedure in sensor networks. An overview and some open issues of the intelligent information processing approaches in wireless sensor networks are given in this paper to meet these challenges, which include in-network data aggregation and data compression algorithms, distributed database storage and query strategies, and multi-sensor data fusion rules. The advantages and disadvantages of every approach are also discussed.

First, some basic knowledge concerning the distributed filter design issue is provided in terms of background introduction and mathematical descriptions. Then, some frequently encountered network-induced complexities resulting from communication constraints are comprehensively reviewed. Subsequently, the latest research progress of the distributed filtering schemes is discussed in detail for various systems over SNs with different performance specifications. Furthermore, practical applications of the distributed filtering methods are presented that include target tracking and distributed generation. Finally, concluding remarks are given followed by possible future research directions.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of distributed detection of sparse signals with a sensor network. Due to practical constraints on communication bandwidth and computational capacity, detection of sparse signals in a distributed manner is more efficient than centralized processing in terms of communication and computation. We develop a greedy algorithm named distributed subspace pursuit (DSP) for distributed detection of sparse signals. In the proposed approach, each node computes an estimate for the sparse support iteratively using the subspace pursuit (SP) algorithm and transmits a condensed message to a fusion center during each iteration to compute a decision statistic. Experimental results show that reliable detection of sparse signals can be obtained by the proposed approach with a very small number of iterations per node. We further demonstrate the superiority of our algorithms to the most related sparsity-driven methods.

Abstract:Software defined wireless sensor network can be adapted to different application needs through dynamic programming. In this paper, we propose a signal acquisition and processing wireless sensor network (SAPSN). SAPSN consists of sampling nodes, processing nodes and remote controllers. At first, the sampling node completes the local signal sampling by analog-digital conversion. Next, according to the different demand from the remote controller, processing node completes time domain or frequency domain analysis of signal processing, and transfers the results back to the remote controller. Finally, the application in remote controller will display the results according to different user's needs. SAPSN is capable of time domain or frequency domain signal analysis and processing, depending on different application requirements. In this paper, we present the concept underlying SAPSN, its architecture. We also present preliminary experimental results.

Abstract:The tradeoff between performance and scalability is a fundamental issue in distributed sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to efficiently organize and utilize network resources for target localization. Motivated by the essential role of geographic proximity in sensing, sensors are organized into geographically local collaborative groups. In a target tracking context, we present a dynamic group management method to initiate and maintain multiple tracks in a distributed manner. Collaborative groups are formed, each responsible for tracking a single target. The sensor nodes within a group coordinate their behavior using geographically-limited message passing. Mechanisms such as these for managing local collaborations are essential building blocks for scalable sensor network applications.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks consist of sensor nodes that are physically distributed over different locations. Spatial filtering procedures exploit the spatial correlation across these sensor signals to fuse them into a filtered signal satisfying some optimality condition. However, gathering the raw sensor data in a fusion center to solve the problem in a centralized way would lead to high energy and communication costs. The distributed adaptive signal fusion (DASF) framework has been proposed as a generic method to solve these signal fusion problems in a distributed fashion, which reduces the communication and energy costs in the network. The DASF framework assumes that there is a common goal across the nodes, i.e., the optimal filter is shared across the network. However, many applications require a node-specific objective, while all these node-specific objectives are still related via a common latent data model. In this work, we propose the DANSF algorithm which builds upon the DASF framework, and extends it to allow for node-specific spatial filtering problems.

Abstract:We consider a wireless network with distributed processing capabilities for estimation or detection applications. Due to limited communication resources, the network selects only a subset of sensor measurements for estimation or detection as long as the resulting fidelity is tolerable. We present a distributed sampling scheme based on the concept of innovations diffusion to select the sensor nodes. In the proposed scheme, sensor selection is accomplished through local communication and signal processing. In order to conserve energy and prolong system lifetime, the proposed algorithm selects a nearly minimum number of active sensors to ensure a desired fidelity for each working period. Extensive simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed sampling scheme.
