Abstract:A Large-scale Wireless Sensor Network (LWSN). such as an environment monitoring system deployed in a city, could yield data on the order of petabytes each year. Storage and computation of such vast quantities of data pose difficult challenges to the LWSN, particularly because sensors are highly constrained by their scarce resources. Distributed storage and parallel processing are solutions that deal with the massive amount of data by utilizing the collective computational power of the large number of sensors, all while keeping inter-node communication minimized to save energy. In this chapter, we conduct a survey on the state-of-the-art of distributed storage and parallel processing in LWSNs. We will focus on the LWSN scenario in which vast amounts of data are collected prior to intensive computation on that data. We argue that current research results in this direction fall into three categories: 1) hierarchical system architecture to support parallel and distributed computation; 2) distributed data aggregation and storage strategies; 3) parallel processing, scheduling and programming methods. We highlight some important results for each of these categories and discuss existing problems and future directions.

Abstract:Sensor networking has emerged as a promising tool for monitoring and actuating the devices of the physical world, employing self-organizing networks of battery-powered wireless sensors that can sense, process, and communicate. Though many specific technical challenges remain and deserve much further study, the primary factor currently limiting progress in sensor networks is not these challenges but is instead the lack of an overall sensor network architecture. In this paper, we characterize the unique design requirements of sensor networks infrastructure, and propose a Cubic and Cross-Layer (CCL) sensor network architecture as a suitable architecture for sensor networks. CCL enables cross-layering using a notification service, adaptability of the protocols to application-specific needs, and a communication abstraction for data-centric communication. In our architecture, we argue that the sensor network has a common abstract- sensor service protocol (SSP), which can provide services rich enough for applications and keep the interface platform-independent. While many aspects of deployed sensor networks will be specific to particular applications, we have begun to identify key building blocks that will enable a wide range of applications.

Abstract:The main goal of wireless sensor networks is to collect information from the target environment through a large number of micro sensor nodes. However, the constrained resource on each senor node brings great challenges to the information processing procedure in sensor networks. An overview and some open issues of the intelligent information processing approaches in wireless sensor networks are given in this paper to meet these challenges, which include in-network data aggregation and data compression algorithms, distributed database storage and query strategies, and multi-sensor data fusion rules. The advantages and disadvantages of every approach are also discussed.

Abstract:Sensor networks are already being used in a wide range of application domains such as environment, medical, military and transportation etc. Along with the widespread use of sensor networks, the data management becomes important. This paper proposes a distributed data management system of heterogeneous sensor networks which integrates data processing, visualization and performance measurement. The system uses dynamic data collection and distributed data storage methods which can reduce the energy cost. And the protocol independent message communication mechanism enables developers to reuse the system to any other underlying routing protocols. Finally, the adoption of distributed and hierarchical architecture makes the system scalable and convenient to deploy.

Abstract:Mobile sensor networks comprise of mobile and static sensor nodes set up for the purpose of collaboratively performing tasks like sensing a phenomenon or monitoring a region. Sensor deployment is an important problem in mobile wireless sensor networks, which affects the performance and lifetime of the networks. This paper presents a distributed deployment algorithm for mobile sensors. Our algorithm is compared with a simulated annealing based algorithm for deployment with the metrics such as coverage, uniformity, time and distance and the Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:A distributed algorithm based on modified Newton method is proposed to solve the nodes localization problem in large scale Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The algorithm includes network partitioning and distributed algorithm. Firstly, the network is divided into several overlapping subregions according to the nodes positions and the distance information between the sensors. The localization problem of subregions is formulated into an unconstrained optimization problem and each subregion can be calculated independently. Then distributed algorithm is used to determine nodes positions in subregions and merge the subregions. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm is superior to the existing algorithms in terms of accuracy in large scale network, which can meet the needs of nodes localization in large scale network.

Abstract:Wireless sensor networks enable continuous and reliable data acquisition for real-time monitoring in a variety of application areas. Due to the large amount of data collected and the potential complexity of emergent patterns, scalable and distributed reasoning is preferable when compared to centralised inference as this allows network wide decisions to be reached robustly without specific reliance on particular network components. In this paper, we provide an overview of distributed inference for both wearable and ambient sensing with specific focus on graphical modelsillustrating their ability to be mapped to the topology of a physical network. Examples of research conducted by the authors in the use of ambient and wearable sensors are provided, demonstrating the possibility for distributed, real-time activity monitoring within a home healthcare environment. Abstract:A critical aspect of applications with wireless sensor networks is network lifetime. Battery-powered sensors are usable as long as they can communicate captured data to a processing node. Sensing and communications consume energy, therefore judicious power management and scheduling can effectively extend the operational time. One important class of wireless sensor applications of deployment of large number of sensors in an area for environmental monitoring. The data collected by the sensors is sent to a central node for processing. In this paper we propose an efficient method to achieve energy savings by organizing the sensor nodes into a maximum number of disjoint dominating sets (DDS) which are activated successively. Only the sensors from the active set are responsible for monitoring the target area and for disseminating the collected data. All other nodes are into a sleep mode, characterized by a low energy consumption. We define the maximum disjoint dominating sets problem and we design a heuristic that computes the sets. Theoretical analysis and performance evaluation results are presented to verify our approach.

Abstract:The tradeoff between performance and scalability is a fundamental issue in distributed sensor networks. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to efficiently organize and utilize network resources for target localization. Motivated by the essential role of geographic proximity in sensing, sensors are organized into geographically local collaborative groups. In a target tracking context, we present a dynamic group management method to initiate and maintain multiple tracks in a distributed manner. Collaborative groups are formed, each responsible for tracking a single target. The sensor nodes within a group coordinate their behavior using geographically-limited message passing. Mechanisms such as these for managing local collaborations are essential building blocks for scalable sensor network applications.

Abstract:To solve some problems which exist in wireless distributed sensor and controller networks,a new WDSCN(wireless distributed sensor and controller networks)is proposed.The problems are that self-organization is not flexible enough,the network range is not wide enough,and system's stability and robustness problem must be improved.The low power ZigBee wireless conmmunication technology,can quickly and accurately complete data collection,management and equipment control,is used in this new WDSCN.So the convenience for the intelligentmeasurement and control are provided in this network.Experimental results show that,compared withthe traditional WDSCN,the new proposed one can increase the driving capability of nodes,reduce the power consumption of the equipment,achieve automatic detection of environmental parameters,centralized management and control interlligently.

Abstract:With rapid innovations in sensing technology and the rising complexity in manufacturing processes, increasingly less expensive and smart devices with multiple heterogeneous on-board sensors, networked through wired or wireless links and deployable in large numbers, are distributed throughout complex Multistage Manufacturing Systems (MMSs). The Distributed Sensor System (DSS) provides unprecedented opportunities for fault detection and isolation. The related issues of the state-of-the-art practice, research challenges and future directions related to software infrastructure of a distributed sensor network are discussed, which include optimal design of DSSs, design criteria, data management, information processing and decision-making. Applications based on the authors' research experiences are also given.

Abstract:Over the past decade, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have evolved into a hot interdisciplinary research area. WSNs are generally considered to be statically deployed, but in reality they are dynamic in nature due to a variety of characteristics including fluctuating wireless link quality and clock drift. Furthermore, new WSN topologies and applications have introduced more dynamics, such as time-varying power resources, data traffic patterns, and mobile sensing. These dynamics pose challenges to the theoretical understanding of WSN behaviours and the design of practical algorithms. This thesis investigates distributed network optimisation in three types of dynamic WSNs: WSNs powered by time-varying solar energy, WSNs with fluctuating wireless channel quality, and WSNs with mobile relays and mobile sinks. In distributed optimisation, sensor nodes communicate with each other to collaboratively solve the overall network optimisation problem. Realistic models are established for these dynamic WSNs, and efficient distributed algorithms are developed to optimise network performance, including power management, duty cycling, wireless link scheduling, data routing and forwarding, sensing rate control, and network resource allocation and pricing. Considering the limited capacity of typical sensor nodes, this thesis also aims to understand and balance the tradeoff between system performance and complexity, bridging the gap between optimisation theory and practical algorithm design in dynamic WSNs. The proposed algorithms are shown to outperform state-of-the-art schemes through theoretical analysis, simulations, and real testbed experiments. The work presented in this thesis should be of interest to researchers in the areas of general embedded networked systems and wireless networks. It should also prove useful in emerging research areas including the Internet of Things (IoTs), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for smart sustainable cites.

Abstract:A major design challenge in wireless sensor network application development is to provide appropriate middleware service protocols to control the energy consumption according to specific application scenarios. In common application scenarios such as in monitoring or surveillance systems, it is usually necessary to extend the system monitoring area as large as possible to cover the maximal area. The two issues of power conservation and maximizing the coverage area have to be considered together with both the sensors’ communication connectivity and their power management strategy. In this chapter,the authors proposed novel enhanced sensor scheduling protocols to address the application scenario of typical surveillance systems. Their protocols take into consideration of both power conservation and coverage ratio to search for the balance between the different requirements. They proposed both centralized and de-centralized sensor scheduling versions, and compared the performance of different algorithms using several metrics. The results provide evidence of the advantages of our proposed protocols comparing with existing sensor scheduling protocols.
