Abstract:The charge distribution in samples under dc electrical field is measured by pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) method, and it was found that the space charges were greatly decreased and field distribution trended to uniform in low density polyethylene (LDPE) by adding 0.3 wt% of Bis-(p-ethylbenzylidene) sorbital. The crystalline structures of LDPE and LDPE/sorbital were studied. The non-isothermal crystallization kinetics was investigated by DSC, and it is shown that sorbital increases crystallization temperature and crystallinity, meanwhile lowers the Avrami exponent of crystallization. The results of WAXD and SALS show that the crystal form does not change, whereas the perfection of spherulites degrades in the presence of sorbital. Besides, the difference of crystalline morphology is obvious, observed by SEM method: the spherulites in the sample of LDPE/sorbital are smaller in size and more in number than those of LDPE. So it can be concluded that sorbital acts as nucleating agent in fact. It is well known that in semicrystalline polymers impurities, including chain ends, are expelled from crystalline regions into amorphous regions or interfaces of spherulites. The decrease of space charges probably attributes to the uniform distribution of impurities in the whole material
