Abstract:Simultaneous noninverted and inverted dual-wavelength conversion is proposed and demonstrated by using a cross-polarization modulation effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). Experiments show that noninverted and inverted conversions lead to power penalties of 1.3 dB and 0.8 dB, respectively, at a bit rate of 10 Gb/s. Based on this scheme, we have demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge, an all-optical modulation format conversion from amplitude-shift keying (ASK) to frequency-shift keying (FSK). A frequency-shift keying signal with flexible tone spacing and high bit rate can be successfully generated by using this method. (C) 2008 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Abstract:We propose an all-optical wavelength conversion method that can preserve the polarization information of an original signal based on four-wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier. Using this method, we experimentally demonstrate wavelength conversion for a 10-Gb/s polarization shift keying signal with 1.6-dB power penalty at a 10−9 bit error rate. To our knowledge, it is the first experiment reported on all-optical wavelength conversion for a polarization shift keying format. The converted polarization shift keying signal is successfully transmitted over a 75-km standard single mode fiber with 1.8-dB transmission penalty.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:A tunable and stability-enhanced all-optical wavelength converter of 9.95328 Gbit/s 2.5 ps RZ-OOK signal is successfully demonstrated with power penalty < 0.5 dB over the maximal purup-probe wavelength spacing, similar to23 nm. It is implemented based on the cross-polarisation modulation (XPolM) effect in a 64 m-long nonlinear photonics crystal fibre (PCF). The Utilisation of such a short length of highly nonlinear PCF operating in the normal dispersion region not only reduces the wavelength converter's sensitivity to environmental disturbances and walk-off effect, but also eliminates modulation instability effects in the XPolM process.

Abstract:A novel design of all-optical AND gate is proposed by using cross polarization modulation effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier. In this scheme, an additional continuous-wave beam is not required as that in traditional scheme. AND output is obtained on either of two input signal wavelengths. The AND scheme is numerically simulated and experimentally demonstrated at a bit rate of 10 Gb/s successfully.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a simple, efficient, and cost-effective all-optical wavelength converter using injection-induced wavelength switching in widely tunable V-cavity laser. When an external signal beam is injected at a wavelength corresponding to one of the sidemodes with a small detuning of about 0.1 nm, the lasing wavelength is switched from the original main mode to the side mode. By filtering out the main mode of the V-cavity laser, a data-inverted wavelength conversion is achieved. This wavelength converter can offer a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) channel-to-channel conversion with converted signal approximately at 200 GHz away from the input signal. A 2.5 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) conversion is experimentally demonstrated with an extinction ratio over 4 dB and SMSR of 36 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate a four-wave-mixing-based wavelength converter suitable for coherent optical transmission at 100 Gb/s/lambda and beyond that uses phase-diversity and nonconstant amplitude modulation formats. Our setup consists of 2 m of bismuth oxide-based nonlinear fiber and two copolarized external cavity pump lasers. We demonstrate wavelength conversion of 112-Gb/s polarization-multiplexed return-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying and 144-Gb/s 16-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation signals. Less than 0.4-dB optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty at BER = 2 x 10(-3) due to wavelength conversion was measured.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for 2×11.64 GBaud adaptively-modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AM-OFDM) signals with QPSK/16QAM formats is experimentally demonstrated in a silicon waveguide. The AM-OFDM signal with partly higher- (and lower-) order formats on lower- (and higher-) frequency subcarriers has better overall conversion performance in receiving optical signal-to-noise ratio and power penalty. In comparison with the OFDM-QPSK signal, at the BER of 3.8×10-3, the bit rate increases 11.64 Gbit/s per channel almost without conversion power penalty increased by replacing the QPSK sequence with the 16QAM sequence on half subcarriers.

Abstract:We demonstrate all-optical wavelength conversion (AOWC) of non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal based on cross-gain modulation in a single heterogeneously integrated III-V-on-silicon semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with an optical bandpass filter. The SOA is 500 μm long and consumes less than 250 mW electrical power. We experimentally demonstrate 12.5 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s AOWC for both wavelength up and down conversion.

Abstract:An all-optical 2 x 2 cross/bar switch is demonstrated exploiting nonlinear polarization rotation in a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The proposed architecture allows operation with packets at the same input wavelengths and does not require high-speed clock control pump signals. Bit-error-rate measurements at the switch output ports for both cross/bar configurations and for both cases of one and two packet signals connected to the input ports are performed. A maximum of 2.3 dB of power penalty was observed in the worst case. The switching energy was as low as about 400 fJ per bit at 10 Gb/s.

Abstract:The wavelength conversion of 2.5 Gbit/s non return-to-zero optical pulse based on cross-gain modulation in semiconductor optical amplifier is demonstrated. The separation for up-conversion is larger than 10 nm, and down-conversion is larger than 20 nm. The relationship between the receiver power and bit error rate is shown. The co-propagation wavelength conversion is used in this experiment. The signal wavelength is fixed, the probe optical signal is extra-cavity laser with the tunable wavelength. No bit error is observed after a measurement of more than one hour, which will be useful in the application of WDM optical networks.

Abstract:All-optical format conversion from nonreturn-to-zero ON-OFF keying to binary phase-shift keying is demonstrated in a semiconductor optical amplifier-based nonlinear polarization switch. This conversion is realized by cross-phase modulation effect for phase encoding and nonlinear polarization rotation effect for amplitude equalization. In the experiment, error-free operation at 10 Gb/s is achieved with a receiver sensitivity penalty of 1.3 dB after single-ended detection.
