Abstract:In order to weaken the bit format effect of converted signal of wavelength converter based on cross-polarization-modulation in semiconductor optical amplifier (CPM-SOA), the principle of CPM-SOA wavelength converter is analyzed; and after discussing the characteristics of frequency chirping of converted signal pulses, a simple method is proposed to improve the bit format effect by using the positive or negative transmission slope of a filter to optimize the converted signal of in-phase or out-of-phase. 10 Gb/s wavelength conversion based on CPM-SOA experiment is demonstrated by using a JDS filter with 0.3 nm optical bandwidth, the bit format effect of long “1” bit and long “0” bit in converted signal is mostly eliminated, the converted signal of in-phase or out-of-phase is reshaped and their power penalties are reduced by more than 3 dB.

Abstract:The performance of the wavelength converter based on differential cross-phase-modulation(DXPM-WC) was improved by analyzing the system characteristics,including its pattern effect,extinction ratio and frequency chirp in simulations using a dynamic model of the semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA).Comparisons with the conventional wavelength converter based on cross-phase-modulation(XPM-WC) show that the DXPM-WC can operate at bit rates beyond the carrier response bandwidth in SOA,with the converted signal from the DXPM-WC having high extinction ratios(13 dB) and low frequency chirp(2 GHz).A method was also developed to broaden the dynamic power range of the DXPM-WC input signal,so that the output converted signal can maintain a high extinction ratio(13 dB) when the input signal power is detuned from the optimum value.

Abstract:By utilizing the cross polarization modulation effect in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), the extinction ratio of cross gain modulation (XGM) wavelength conversion was enhanced, the pattern effect was significantly reduced, and the power penalty of wavelength conversion was reduced by 5 dB simultaneously. Furthermore, by adjusting the settings of polarization controllers, both inverted and non-inverted wavelength conversion can be achieved right in the same wavelength converter.

Abstract:Performances of wavelength converted signal by cross phase modulation (XPM) using semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA's) were studied by the use of the multi-section model. Results show that they are related to both the phase arm bias current of the XPM wavelength converter and its operation. When the conversion is under the in-phase operation, the peak extinction ratio (ER) and the chirp frequency of the converted signal increase according to the decrease of the phase arm bias current, but the input signal power dynamic range decreases. When the converter is under the out-of-phase operation, the chirp frequency decreases with the decrease of the phase arm bias current, while the peak ER and the input power dynamic range keep almost the same when the phase arm bias current changes.

Abstract:A new scheme is presented in this article which, by using a dispersion-imbalanced fiber loop mirror, gives a better solution to improve the extinction ratio degradation of wavelength converter based on cross-gain modulation. The maximum improvement of the extinction ratio is observed to be 3.5 dB in the wavelength conversion experiment with a clock signal at 2.5 GHz.

Abstract:We have studied an all-optical wavelength converter utilizing cross-polarization modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier, and presented a feedback scheme for polarization based on the monitoring the light intensity of converted signal and adjusting the voltages of the polarization controller, which realized an error-free conversion of 10Gbit/s NRZ signal for more than 2 hours.

Abstract:The improvement of optical communication systems' transmission capacity and bandwidth requirements and the emergence of wavelength division multiplexing technology means a huge demand for low-cost tunable lasers. In this paper, the intensity modulation performance of a low-cost tunable laser v-cavity tunable laser is studied. The wavelength division multiplexing system link and the free space optical communication system link in the indoor environment are built, respectively. The direct modulation performance is analyzed by measuring the eye pattern, signal-to-noise ratio, bit error rate, and extinction ratio.

Abstract:Different modulation formats may be required in different optical communication networks. Format conversion from intensity format to phase format is necessary to ensure the functions between long-haul transmission networks and metropolitan area networks. Cross-phase modulation (XPM) in silicon waveguides provides a promising way to realize all-optical integrated format conversion since a nonlinear phase shift is induced to the probe by the incident signal power. An on-off keying (OOK) signal can be converted to differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signal if nonlinear phase shift of π is achieved. We numerically investigate the nonlinear phase shift caused by XPM in silicon waveguides by considering the influences of the walk-off effect, group-velocity dispersion, and nonlinear losses including two-photon absorption (TPA) and free-carrier absorption (FCA). The nonlinear phase shift is tried to be enhanced through waveguide design and wavelength management. The walk-off effect can be minimized by carefully choosing the zero dispersion wavelength of the used silicon waveguide and setting the signal and probe wavelengths symmetrically. Low and flat dispersion is beneficial to acquiring a large nonlinear phase shift. TPA and FCA will greatly reduce the nonlinear phase shift obtained from XPM and they should be effectively suppressed in order to realize high-quality format conversion.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for 2×11.64 GBaud adaptively-modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AM-OFDM) signals with QPSK/16QAM formats is experimentally demonstrated in a silicon waveguide. The AM-OFDM signal with partly higher- (and lower-) order formats on lower- (and higher-) frequency subcarriers has better overall conversion performance in receiving optical signal-to-noise ratio and power penalty. In comparison with the OFDM-QPSK signal, at the BER of 3.8×10-3, the bit rate increases 11.64 Gbit/s per channel almost without conversion power penalty increased by replacing the QPSK sequence with the 16QAM sequence on half subcarriers.

Abstract:We investigate the converted optical signal-to-noise ratio, intersymbol interference, and bit-error-rate performance of all-optical wavelength converter based on four-wave mixing in semiconductor optical amplifiers as functions of the input pump and signal powers. The minimum power penalty less than 1 dB is achieved by optimizing the input signal and pump power. In addition, two approaches to expand the dynamic range of input signal power have been presented with the resulting dynamic ranges of more than 25 and 12 dB respectively and both show good tolerance to variations in input signal power.

Abstract:We propose a simple and effective model to properly design the monolithically integrated tunable optical transmitter based on the traveling wave Mach-Zehnder modulator (TW-MZM) and V-cavity laser (VCL). Firstly, the integrated structure of TW-MZM and VCL is presented. Then we put forward a TW-MZM model to design and improve the performance of the electro-optic (EO) modulation bandwidth of the optical transmitter. By changing the structural parameters of the optical waveguide and the traveling wave electrodes, we reduce the microwave transmission loss from 3 mm-1 to 0.6 mm-1 at 20 GHz and thus increase the theoretical electro-optic response from 13.5 GHz to 52.8 GHz. Due to the high modulation efficiency from the Quantum Confined Stark Effect (QCSE) in quantum wells, the traveling wave modulator is very compact with a length of only 600 μm.

Abstract:A scheme for mitigating patterning effects in wavelength conversion by using a concatenated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and electroabsorption modulator (EAM) is proposed. The optimization of the parameters of the semiconductor devices and receiver electronics is theoretically investigated. The bit error ratio (BER) of the output signals in both the co-propagating and the counter-propagating configurations is quantitatively evaluated. The simulation results indicate that the patterning effect in wavelength conversion due to the slow recovery of the carrier density in the SOA can be well compensated by a concatenated EAM. The simulation results are confirmed by preliminary pump-probe experiment using a 10Gb/s clock pulse train. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America
