Abstract:A novel vestigial-sideband (VSB) payload scheme is proposed for high-speed all-optical label-switching (AOLS) networks. The combination and separation of the VSB payload and the optical label is experimentally demonstrated, and the influences of the power-split ratio, time-delay interference, interferometric noise (IN), and wavelength difference between the payload and the label are analyzed. Simulation and experiment results show that this VSB payload scheme can highly reduce the channel bandwidth and it is easy to realize by using optical filters, so it is a potential technique to be used in optical networks with bit rate of 40 Gb/s.

Abstract:A novel scheme based on 40Gb/s vestigial sideband modulation for optical payload and label multiplex and separation in all optical label switching (AOLS) networks is firstly proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The payload is combined and separated with wavelength labels by optical filters. The experiment results show that after label separation, the power penalties of payload and label are both very little. The influence of the wavelength difference between label and payload is also discussed. The power penalty of payload can be less than 1dB as long as the wavelength difference is larger than 0.1nm. This scheme highly reduces the channel bandwidth of payload and label and is proposing to be used in future optical Internet.

Abstract:A novel high spectral efficiency scheme based on 40 Gb/s vestigial sideband modulation for all optical label switching is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. After label separation, the power penalties of payload and label are both less than 0.5 dB. It is shown that this method can effectively reduce the bandwidth of optical signal. In 40 Gb/s optical networks, the 20 dB bandwidth of payload combined with label is less than 0.54 nm. The influence of the wavelength difference between label and payload is also discussed.

Abstract:A novel orthogonal modulation scheme of polarization-shift-keying label over vestigial sideband payload is proposed and experimentally demonstrated over a 43-Gb/s all-optical-label-switching transmission. With this scheme, a high extinction ratio of the label is reached, while a spectral efficiency of 0.8 b/s/Hz is achieved by weakening the imperfection of the high-speed pulse sequence in polarization modulation. Furthermore, this modulation scheme is relatively irrelevant with payload bit rate. The payload and label penalties after 80-km NZDSF fiber transmission and label erasure are 1.5 and 1 dB, respectively. The influence of filter center frequency offset is also investigated. Besides, a label rewriting method is introduced to simplify label processing in intermedia nodes. All these results show that this scheme can be a candidate technique for the next-generation optical network.

Abstract:A novel technique for optical labeling of payloads and labels using optical single-sideband modulation is proposed. This method can effectively reduce the bandwidth of optical signal and utilize the low frequency RF devices to generate the labels. And we also investigate the power and phase character of this scheme. Simulation results show that this scheme is robust to the phase differences of the single-sideband payload and label. After fiber transmission and label swapping, the power penalties of payload and label are both less than 1dB. Therefore this scheme is suitable for 40Gb/s optical label switching networks.

Abstract:A novel optical packet switching scheme,in which an optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OOFDM) signal is generated as a label,is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.The 10 Gb/s OOK optical payload and the 2.5 Gb/s OFDM optical label are produced by intensity modulation of two continuous waves with different wavelength,respectively.In the experiment,the eye diagrams of the payload,constellation diagrams of the label and the BER curves of the label and payload are obtained,when the optical packets were transmitted on optical fiber or not.It is experimentally demonstrated that the power penalties for the payload and the label after 10 km fiber transmission are 1 dB and 0.5 dB, respectively.The scheme is easy to implement,so it can be used in an optical label switched network.

Abstract:SCM optical label swapping for high-speed payload has been a hot issue, since it was addressed as one of the most proposed technologies for building an optical switching network. In this work, a novel in-band SCM scheme of the optical label swapper with imposing Manchester encoding on the payload is proposed, in which interference between payload and label is small even though the SCM label is inserted at a low frequency. Simulations for packets composed of 100Gb/s QPSK payload and ASK SCM label over 80 km standard single-mode fiber are conducted and how performances of payload and label vary with different couple factor, label speed or SCM frequency are analyzed. Compared to in-band SCM label inserted by cascade modulation, performance of payload in the new architecture is almost independent of modulation index, and the receiver sensitivity of the payload is improved by nearly 10 dBm with only dispersion compensation.

Abstract:All-optical label switching (AOLS) is a potential technique which is introduced to fully use the bandwidth capacity in future optical networks and the packet operations are mostly carried out in the optical layer. The key issue in the AOLS approach is the method of coding the optical label onto the packet as it directly determines the structure and the performance of the optical core router as well as the channel bandwidth efficiency and the transmission quality of the packet and its label. With the bit rate increasing above 40Gb/s, new labeling scheme is needed to enhance the spectral efficiency. In this paper, recent advanced labeling schemes for future high speed AOLS network are reviewed, especially the new schemes demonstrated in Tsinghua University, China. Two novel labeling scheme based on vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation are mainly introduced both in principle and experiment. One is compact wavelength labeling scheme which achieves high spectral efficiency since the wasteful double sideband of 40Gb/s has been reduced to vestigial sideband. This scheme can be easily carried out by using optical filters. Another is polarization shift keying scheme with VSB payload which has high spectral efficiency near to 0.8bit/s/Hz. This scheme utilizes two polarization orientations to carry the label signal and causes little distortions between the label and payload. And this scheme is also independent of the payload bit rate which is a good character for future networks. Both the two schemes have little power penalties after long distance SMF transmission and are promising to be used in beyond 40Gb/s optical networks.

Abstract:In this letter, we report a novel amplitude shift keying/differential phase-shift keying (ASK/DPSK) optical packet encoding method that can significantly reduce the crosstalk between the ASK payload and the DPSK label through spectrum shaping. We demonstrate wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission for 4 x 40 Gb/s labeled return-to-zero signals, including label swapping by Kerr switching of one of the channels, with an overall penalty of 3.3 dB for the payload and 0.3 dB for the label, clearly validating this orthogonal modulation scheme as a potential solution for future ultrahigh-speed Internet protocol-over-WDM networks..

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate all-optical label-encoding format conversion from subcarrier-multiplexing to time-domain-multiplexing for 156.25 Mb/s labels and 10 Gb/s payload. The experiments show error-free operations with only 0.41 dB normalized power penalty for the payload.

Abstract:We report on a new approach to all-optical subcarrier labeling based on sideband generation through carrier-suppression of the payload. The experimental transmission over 50-km standard fiber of a 10-Gb/s payload data multiplexed with a synchronized 1.25-Gb/s subcarrier label is carried out with less than 1-dB receiver power penalty, clearly demonstrating the feasibility of this sideband optical labeling scheme. The requirements to the modulation index and dc bias along With the limitation of the input extinction ratio are discussed.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion for an optical packet with an optically multiplexed 40-Gbit/s payload and a 2.5-Gbit/s label has been demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge in an optical-label-switched network. The power penalties caused by wavelength conversion for the 40-Gbit/s payload and the 2.5-Gbit/s label are 1.1 and 2.3 dB, respectively. We have also demonstrated that the optical packet is successfully transmitted over two hops with a record transmission distance of 200 km.

Abstract:We propose a compact and simple all-optical subcarrier-multiplexed (SCM) label-swapping system employing an integrated electroabsorption modulation laser and a semiconductor optical amplifier based Mach-Zehnder interferometer wavelength converter. The experiments demonstrated error-free all-optical label swapping for the 155-Mb/s label and 10-Gb/s payload over two optical label-switching network nodes with less than 0.7-dB power penalty on the payload. The majority. of the components in this SCM label-swapping system can be realized on a semiconductor platform (e.g., InP), which implies a step toward possible monolithic or hybrid integration of the all-optical label-swapping system in the future.

Abstract:The authors propose a novel optical-label-swapping scheme for the same wavelength packet switching using optical carrier suppression and separation technique and without requiring any conventional wavelength converter in a scalable optical-label-switched network that carries a differential phase-shift keying modulated payload and an on-off keying modulated label.
