Abstract:In this letter, we propose an optical subcarrier labeling technique that guarantees the transparency to the payload modulation format based on carrier suppression of the payload. We experimentally demonstrate transparent wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber and subcarrier label insertion for a 10-Gb/s differential phase-shift keying payload and a 155-Mb/s amplitude shift keying subcarrier label with an overall penalty of 1.8 dB for the payload and 1.7 dB for the label.

Abstract:We report on a new approach to all-optical subcarrier labeling based on sideband generation through carrier-suppression of the payload. The experimental transmission over 50-km standard fiber of a 10-Gb/s payload data multiplexed with a synchronized 1.25-Gb/s subcarrier label is carried out with less than 1-dB receiver power penalty, clearly demonstrating the feasibility of this sideband optical labeling scheme. The requirements to the modulation index and dc bias along With the limitation of the input extinction ratio are discussed.

Abstract:A novel technique for optical multiplexing of label and payload using optical carrier suppression and separation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. No power penalty is observed when the payload and label, with signal extinction ratio >11 dB, are transmitted over 60-km standard single-mode fiber with full-dispersion compensation. The technique of the optical label generation offers many advantages compared with previous techniques.

Abstract:We report an experimental investigation of transmission and transparent wavelength conversion properties of a two-level optically labeled signal using amplitude-shift-keying/differential-phase-shift-keying orthogonal modulation. Error-free transmission of a 10-Gb/s payload and 2.5-Gb/s label over 80-km nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber is achieved with less than 1-dB power penalty. Transparent wavelength label swapping based on four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber is also demonstrated, clearly validating this orthogonal modulation scheme as a potential solution for optical labeling.

An optical signal consisting of a 10 Gbit/s payload and a 156 Mbit/s label was generated, and its performance was evaluated in a 50 km standard fibre transmission link.

Abstract:A novel scheme based on 40Gb/s vestigial sideband modulation for optical payload and label multiplex and separation in all optical label switching (AOLS) networks is firstly proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The payload is combined and separated with wavelength labels by optical filters. The experiment results show that after label separation, the power penalties of payload and label are both very little. The influence of the wavelength difference between label and payload is also discussed. The power penalty of payload can be less than 1dB as long as the wavelength difference is larger than 0.1nm. This scheme highly reduces the channel bandwidth of payload and label and is proposing to be used in future optical Internet.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a polarization shift keying label and a vestigial sideband carrier-suppressed return-to-zero payload scheme for a 43 Gbit/s all-optical label switching network. This scheme has a narrow channel bandwidth and a low penalty due to polarization mode dispersion impairments, which confirm it as a candidate technique for the next generation of optical networks.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optically labeled signal based on return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying for payload at 10-Gb/s and amplitude-shift keying for label at 622-Mb/s. Receiver sensitivity of similar to -36 dBm and penalty-free transmission over 80-km standard single-mode fiber are achieved for both the payload (with dispersion compensation) and the label. This labeling scheme allows the use of a deeply saturated semiconductor optical amplifier to perform polarization-insensitive label erasure. Label swapping is demonstrated with moderate penalty.

Abstract:In this letter, we report a novel amplitude shift keying/differential phase-shift keying (ASK/DPSK) optical packet encoding method that can significantly reduce the crosstalk between the ASK payload and the DPSK label through spectrum shaping. We demonstrate wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) transmission for 4 x 40 Gb/s labeled return-to-zero signals, including label swapping by Kerr switching of one of the channels, with an overall penalty of 3.3 dB for the payload and 0.3 dB for the label, clearly validating this orthogonal modulation scheme as a potential solution for future ultrahigh-speed Internet protocol-over-WDM networks..

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel and simple scheme for dual-polarization vector pay-load generation in an optical label switching network. The 8 Gbaud quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) payload, generated by one intensity modulator with signal precoding and optical carrier suppression, is first polarization-multiplexed by a polarization multiplexer, then combined with a 2.5 Gb/s label before being transmitted over 20 km single-mode fiber, and finally separated from the label and recovered by the receiver with less than 2 dB power penalty. The proposed scheme can facilitate label insertion and is suitable for an optical label switching network with a simple architecture.

Abstract:A novel optical carrier suppression and separation (OCSS) technique is used to generate spectral efficient DWDM optical labels and payload. The advantages and disadvantages of using different techniques to generate optical labels are compared. The transmission performance of the optical label and payload is experimentally and numerically investigated. These numerical and experimental results show that the optical label and payload generation and transport using the OCSS technique can be applied to wide-area metro and core network.

Abstract:A novel technique for optical labeling of payloads and labels using optical single-sideband modulation is proposed. This method can effectively reduce the bandwidth of optical signal and utilize the low frequency RF devices to generate the labels. And we also investigate the power and phase character of this scheme. Simulation results show that this scheme is robust to the phase differences of the single-sideband payload and label. After fiber transmission and label swapping, the power penalties of payload and label are both less than 1dB. Therefore this scheme is suitable for 40Gb/s optical label switching networks.

Abstract:SCM optical label swapping for high-speed payload has been a hot issue, since it was addressed as one of the most proposed technologies for building an optical switching network. In this work, a novel in-band SCM scheme of the optical label swapper with imposing Manchester encoding on the payload is proposed, in which interference between payload and label is small even though the SCM label is inserted at a low frequency. Simulations for packets composed of 100Gb/s QPSK payload and ASK SCM label over 80 km standard single-mode fiber are conducted and how performances of payload and label vary with different couple factor, label speed or SCM frequency are analyzed. Compared to in-band SCM label inserted by cascade modulation, performance of payload in the new architecture is almost independent of modulation index, and the receiver sensitivity of the payload is improved by nearly 10 dBm with only dispersion compensation.

Abstract:>A novel packet format with non-return-to-zero(NRZ)label and duobinary carrier-suppressed return-to-zero (DCS-RZ)payload is proposed for optical packet switching networks.NRZ label is followed by DCS-RZ payload with a certain guard time.The spectra of the low-rate NRZ label locate around the optical carrier frequency where some parts of the corresponding spectra of the high-rate DCS-RZ payload have been suppressed due to DCS-RZ modulation.At the switching node,the label or payload extraction can be realized simply through an optical bandpass or notch filter respectively.The feasibility of the scheme is verified by the simulation on the famous photonic design platform designed by Virtual Photonics Inc. (VPI).The effects of optical filter bandwidth on the received signal quality are discussed by analyzing bit error rate(BER)and contrast ratio performances.

Abstract:We have simplified the label swapping processing in optical labeled packet switching networks by using orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) label technique. By using OFDM label, the label swapping can be realized without old label erasure. We have applied this technique in a labeled packet networking with 112-Gb/s polarization multiplexing return-to-zero quadrature phase-shift keying payload and coherent detection. Multiple label swapping processing has been demonstrated with small optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty.
