Abstract:White light supercontinuum, which is generated by coupling short laser pulses into a nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, not only covers an extremely broad wavelength range (e.g., from visible to near infrared) but also has high spatial coherence. As a result, tightly focused supercontinuum can be used to trap a single particle and simultaneously to perform broad-band ultra-sensitive optical spectroscopy at a single particle level. In this paper we investigate the optical scattering spectroscopy of a single particle in white light supercontinuum optical tweezers. Lorenz-Mie theory and Fourier angular spectrum analysis are used to model the scattering of tightly focused supercontinuum by a uniform spherical scatterer. In addition, Born approximation method is applied to analyze scattering by non-spherical weak scatterers. Unlike conventional ensemble averaged spectroscopy, single particle spectroscopy has the unique capability to probe the properties of individual particles, which can lead to many important applications such as ultrasensitive sensing and nanoparticle characterization.
Manipulation and Spectroscopy of A Single Particle by Use of White-Light Optical Tweezers

Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, three-dimensional (3D) trapping and manipulation of microscopic objects by use of supercontinuum white light generated from photonic crystal fibers. Furthermore, we show that the supercontinuum white-light optical tweezers used have the unique capability to perform optical scattering spectroscopy of a single 3D trapped object over a broad wavelength range. These novel tweezers can potentially open a promising avenue toward simultaneous manipulation and characterization of microscopic objects.

Abstract:An optical setup that can generate a focused light spot, with its shape tunable from a very sharp peak-centered beam to a donut-shaped dark-centered beam, is always desired in optical tweezing. This setup is now realized by incorporating an image inverting interferometer (III) and a helical phase element into a radially polarized beam generator, which enables the trapping and control of a large variety of particles with a single optical tweezing system. The performance of this system is investigated theoretically.

Abstract:We report a novel method for characterizing the stiffness of white light supercontinuum tweezers, in which the nonlinear photonic crystal fiber used for supercontinuum generation is also utilized as an effective confocal pinhole to track the motion of a trapped bead and as a scan head to realize rapid scanning of the optical trap. By measuring the phase of the bead's motion in following the trap, a lateral stiffness value of about 7.9 mu N/m was obtained with supercontinumm power of about 75mW. Our technique can potentially allow for trap stiffness calibration along an arbitrary direction in three dimensions. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We present supercontiuum generation in 10 cm-long tapered fiber and photonic crystal fiber by 130 fs ultrashort laser pulses. The output spectra are obtained in the both cases. The differences of output spectra of them are compared and analyzed.

Abstract:The authors report on a supercontinuum tweezer which combines tweezing with broadband (∼3000cm−1) coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopy by taking advantage of the high spatial coherence and broad bandwidth of pulsed supercontinuum generated in a nonlinear photonic crystal fiber. Polarization-discriminated and time-resolved CARS is investigated to suppress the nonresonant four-wave-mixing background.

Abstract:We present analysis of forward optical scattering spectra of a single spherical object illuminated with tightly focused white light supercontinuum based on angular spectrum decomposition and Mie's scattering theory. The experimental results agree with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The Supercontinuum spectrums were generated in different zero-dispersion photonic crystal fibers with 130 fs ultrafast laser pulses. The photonic crystal fibers of zero-dispersion point at 800 nm, 1060 nm and 2 mu m were engaged. The Supercontinuum spectrums with different pulse energies and different central wavelengths were obtained and the difference between them were discussed.

Abstract:The ability to focus light on a subwavelength scale is essential in modern photonics. Optical microfiber-based sub-wavelength focusing will allow a miniaturized, flexible and versatile tool to be superior for many applications such as biomedical imaging and optomechanics. When a single mode exits from the microfiber endface, it will experience significant diffraction into the free space. This situation can be changed by combining two-mode interference with its dependence on the distributions of E -field amplitude and phase. Herein we report a novel approach to sub-wavelength focusing based on the two-mode interference from an optical microfiber. By utilizing unique distributions of electric field amplitude and phase of two interacting optical modes, interference field patterns with a single focus (via a two-mode set of HE11 and HE12) or multiple foci (via a two-mode set of HE11 and HE31) can be obtained. Then, it is proved that the constructed foci are helpful for the adjustable and selective trapping of nanoparticles. Circular polarization of optical mode is utilized in order to improve the angular symmetry of sub-wavelength focusing patterns other than linear polarized optical modes. Our simulation results show that the smallest focal spot can be produced from the EH11 and HE12 mode interference, with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) value of ≈ 348 nm (0.65λ). Such a subwavelength focusing field is applied to the optical trapping of an 85 nm-diameter polystyrene nanosphere. Further calculation reveals that the stable trapping can be fulfilled with axial and transverse trap stiffness of 11.48 pN/(μm·W) and 64.98 pN/(μm·W) (via two-mode set of HE11 and HE12), as well as axial and transverse potential well of 101 kBT/W and 641 kBT/W via two-mode interference of HE11 and HE12. These values demonstrate the great improvement over conventional tapered fibers. Further investigations show that different foci (via a two-mode set of HE11 and HE31) exhibit distinct trap stiffness and potential wells, justifying the potential for nanoparticle size sorting. Based on the flexible all-fiber device, this subwavelength focusing strategy by two-mode interference may find promising applications in optical manipulation, superresolution optical imaging, data storage and nanolithography.

Waveguide-grating-based Optical Tweezers for Particle Trapping

Abstract:On-chip photonic devices are promising for large-scale optical trapping and parallel particle manipulation. Based on a waveguide grating, which can convert light from a localized optical mode to a freely propagating radiation beam, we propose two waveguide-grating-based optical tweezers for trapping micro- and sub-micro-particles. By optimizing the structural parameters of the etched trenches on the waveguide, the intensity distribution of the upward diffraction beam out of the grating is altered to approximate a target beam that can produce large gradient forces. The optimization method generates a focused quasi-Gaussian beam with a waist height of 7 μm above the grating and a beam with quasi-spherical wave wavefronts at ± 20°. The optimized upward radiation beams generate gradient forces up to hundreds of pN/W, which is strong enough for trapping microparticles with a trapping range as high as 20 μm. Besides, the proposed tweezer shows a possibility of trapping sub-micron particles and the potential for large-scale parallel particle manipulation.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a single fiber optical tweezer for particle multi-dimensional arrangement based on an optical bottle beam produced by concatenating a few-mode fiber and a step-index multimode fiber. We use the mode division multiplexing technology to produce the optical bottle beam with uneven energy distribution. The LP11 and LP21 mode beams are excited by docking a 980 nm single-mode fiber at the outlet of the light source to a few-mode fiber with a defined offset. The few-mode fiber allows LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams to be spread in. The optical bottle beam is focused on a high refractive index glass microsphere integrated on the fiber end. The LP01 mode beam is used to trap particles and array them in a one-dimension space (linear arrangement), the LP01 and LP11 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a two-dimension space (planar arrangement), and the LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a three-dimension space (solid arrangement). The proposed fiber optical tweezer is simple in structure and will allow us to examine the interaction between the cells when held in close proximity.

Abstract:Optical tweezer arrays of laser-cooled and individual controlled particles have revolutionized the atomic, molecular and optical physics, and they afford exquisite capabilities for applications in quantum simulation of many-body physics, quantum computation and quantum sensing. Underlying this development is the technical maturity of generating scalable optical beams, enabled by active components and high numerical aperture objective. However, such a complex combination of bulk optics outside the vacuum chamber is very sensitive to any vibration and drift. Here we demonstrate the generation of 3*3 static tweezer array with a single chip-scale multifunctional metasurface element in vacuum, replacing the meter-long free space optics. Fluorescence counts on the camera validates the successfully trapping of the atomic ensemble array. Further, we discuss the strategy to achieve low scattering and crosstalk, where a metasurface design featuring dual-wavelength independent control is included. Our results, together with other recent development in integrated photonics for cold atoms, could pave the way for compact and portable quantum sensors and simulators in platforms of neutral atom arrays.

Abstract:Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) present a wavelength-scale periodic microstructure along their length. Their core and two-dimensional photonic crystal might be based on varied geometries and materials, allowing supercontinuum (SC) generation due to nonlinear effects in an extremely large wavelength range. In this paper we have reviewed PCFs utilized for SC generation. Fiber fabrication for SC generation is present. Spectral broadening mechanisms are also described in brief. Particular attention is as well as paid to PCFs including uniform PCFs, cascaded fibers, tapered fibers and PCFs with special material doped, which are commonly used to generate SC.

Abstract:A simple optical interference method for creating multiple optical tweezers from a single laser beam, using two dimentional photonic crystals (PhCs) as a diffractive beam splitter, was described. To obtained clear periodic traps, all diffracted beams sould be used and the intensity of each splitted beam should be same. So the period and the surface features of PhCs was adjusted in the present study As a demonstration of this technique, using 2D PhCs with 700 nanometer period, hexagonal lattice patterns with one micrometer period have been implemented. The image of periodic intensity gradient of light fabricated by this method is presented.

Abstract:We report on a novel chromatic confocal microscope system using supercontinuum white light generated from a photonic crystal fiber. The chromatic aberration of a pair of singlet lenses is employed to focus the different spectral components of the supercontinuum at different depth levels. An effective depth scanning range of 7 microm is demonstrated. The corresponding depth resolution is measured to be less than 1 microm (FWHM).

Abstract:We demonstrate a platform where optical evanescent vortex has been realized by focusing a laser beam with orbital angular momentum (OAM) onto an all-dielectric one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC). This platform can simultaneously trap and manipulate various micro-scale specimens (i.e., polymer microsphere, inorganic microwire, yeast cells and Escherichia coli cells). The working principle lies in the low loss of the excited Bloch surface waves (BSWs) that propagate on the dielectric 1DPC and form a virtual probe for trapping the specimens. The OAM encoded by the BSWs will then simultaneously manipulate the specimens, such as inducing the rotation or orbital motion. Both experimental and simulation results verify that the capability of this new platform is due to the two kinds of optical force induced by the BSWs, which presents a different mechanism from that by the commonly optical electric-field vortex. Optical trapping or manipulation of micro & nano specimens play important roles in physics, life and materials sciences, thus, this new platform will find applications in microscale assembly, cell-cell interaction, bioprinting and biosensing research, and also expand our understanding of the physics interaction between vector beam and BSWs.
[Study on the Supercontinuum Generation with Femtosecond Pulse in Photonic Crystal Fiber].

Abstract:Physical mechanism of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber by femtosecond laser pulse has been investigated experimentally. In this study, we used the tunable output wavelength Ti: sapphire optical parametric amplifier as the pump source and the fiber spectrometer acquired the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fiber under different power and wavelength conditions, then we normalized the spectrograms and make a comparison of them. PCF supercontinuum differences affected by physical mechanisms were analyzed. We found that when increasing the incident pump pulse power, the spectral width will be gradually widened, there are more peaks, part of the energy will transfer in to the short-wave- length region; as long as it reaches a certain intensity, width of supercontinuum finally saturated, the shape of supercontinuum was also stabilized. As the incident power was settled at 300 milliwatt and the length of PCF was settled at 105 millimeter, experimental results show that width and shape of supercontinuum are affected by the wavelength of pump pulse, in the range of 760 to 840 nm, there appears more and more peaks with the increase of incident wavelength; at anomalous dispersion the spectrogram of supercontinuum generation will be more flat and more wider as the wavelength of pump pulse closer to zero point.
Observation of Miniaturized Bound States in the Continuum with Ultra-High Quality Factors

Abstract:Light trapping is a constant pursuit in photonics because of its importance in science and technology. Many mechanisms have been explored, including the use of mirrors made of materials or structures that forbid outgoing waves, and bound states in the continuum that are mirror-less but based on topology. Here we report a compound method, combining lateral mirrors and bound states in the continuum in a cooperative way, to achieve a class of on-chip optical cavities that have high quality factors and small modal volumes. Specifically, light is trapped in the transverse direction by the photonic band gap of the lateral hetero-structure and confined in the vertical direction by the constellation of multiple bound states in the continuum. As a result, unlike most bound states in the continuum found in photonic crystal slabs that are de-localized Bloch modes, we achieve light-trapping in all three dimensions and experimentally demonstrate quality factors as high as Q=1.09×106 and modal volumes as low as V=17.74(λ0/n)3 in the telecommunication regime. We further prove the robustness of our method through the statistical study of multiple fabricated devices. Our work provides a new method of light trapping, which can find potential applications in photonic integration, nonlinear optics and quantum computing.

Abstract:Experiments on fs laser-induced transient grating （LITG） in carbon bisulfide （CS2 ） are carried out to explore the chirp characteristics of a white-light supercontinuum （SC） generated by a 800-nm, 160-fs laser pulse in a 4-mm thick Al2O3 crystal. Two orders of diffraction signals of SC by fs LITG in CS2 are observed, demonstrating that both the third-order process and the fifth-order process are present simultaneously. The experimental results also imply that the formation of an fs transient refractive-index grating in CS2 is mainly due to the electronic polarization process.
