Abstract:"http://www.osa-jon.org/features/OAN_2005.html". Feature Issue on Optical Access Networks (OAN). Passive optical networks (PONs) have the potential to be high-speed access networks. However, PONs have higher installation and maintenance costs. One way to overcome these costs is to maximize the sharing, i.e., connect as many subscribers as possible onto one PON serving area. We propose a novel multistage linear add-drop (LAD) architecture for high-capacity PONs that is flexible, scalable, and provides bidirectional and symmetric wavelength-division multiplexing data services. As a result, we can provide real triple play services (video, data, and voice) at higher rates and lower cost. We also demonstrate a three-stage LAD PON experimental test bed that employs 40 downstream wavelengths, 40 upstream wavelengths, and a 20 nm broadcast band for video and other broadcast services. This access network design can support symmetric data services up to 10 Gbits/s along with 2.5 Gbits/s of video data for each of as many as 1280 users that would be in a 20 km range.

Abstract:A new multistage scheme for dense wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networks (DWDM PON) is proposed. This scheme is realized by cascading optical interleavers with increasing periodicities. Downstream transmission of a DWDM comb consisting of four 10 Gb/s channels is demonstrated in the proposed multistage network. We also show a scheme to provide upstream transmission. Experimental results show that this technique has the potential to support many groups of customers located at various distances from the central office.

Abstract:The time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON) has been recognized as an attractive solution to provide broadband access for the next-generation networks. In this paper, we propose flexible service multicasting and aggregation functionality for TWDM-PON utilizing multiple-pump four-wave-mixing (FWM) and cyclic arrayed waveguide grating (AWG). With the proposed scheme, multiple TWDM-PON links share a single optical line terminal (OLT), which can greatly reduce the network deployment expense and achieve efficient network resource utilization by load balancing among different optical distribution networks (ODNs). The proposed scheme is compatible with existing TDM-PON infrastructure with fixed-wavelength OLT transmitter, thus smooth service upgrade can be achieved. Utilizing the proposed scheme, we demonstrate a proof-of-concept experiment with 10-Gb/s OOK and 10-Gb/s QPSK orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal multicasting and aggregating to seven PON links. Compared with back-to-back (BTB) channel, the newly generated multicasting OOK signal and OFDM signal have power penalty of 1.6dB and 2dB at the BER of 10−3, respectively. For the aggregation of multiple channels, no obvious power penalty is observed. What is more, to verify the flexibility of the proposed scheme, we reconfigure the wavelength selective switch (WSS) and adjust the number of pumps to realize flexible multicasting functionality. One to three, one to seven, one to thirteen and one to twenty-one multicasting are achieved without modifying OLT structure.

Abstract:We introduce a novel architecture for next generation passive optical network (PON) base on the Single-carrier Frequency Division Multiple Address (SC-FDMA) technique. Both downstream and upstream SCFDMA-PON transmissions (5 Gb/s total, 2.5 Gb/s for each user) are experimentally demonstrated over 22.2 km standard single mode fiber and an additional simulated 1:32 optical splitter. We also test the tolerance range of the synchronization error and prove it matches the cyclic prefix period in our scheme, which means the packet transmission accuracy from different optical network units can be relaxed in the upstream.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing passive-optical-network (WDM-OFDM-PON) architecture with centralized lightwave sources and polarization shift keying (PolSK) multicast overlay. The 10-Gb/s 16QAM-OFDM point to point (P2P) signal, 2.5-Gb/s multicast PolSK signal and 2.5-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) upstream signal are experimentally demonstrated. After transmission over 25km standard single mode fiber (SMF), 1.5dB crosstalk between the downstream signals is eliminated by employing a low pass electrical filter at the PolSK receiver. The power penalty of the upstream OOK signal at BER of 10(-9) is less than 0.1dB.

Abstract:As the broadband applications continue rising, the solutions of high-speed passive optical network (PON) with large power budget are highly desired. Direct detection scheme combined with digital signal procession (DSP) has been considered as a promising candidate due to its low cost, low power consumption and simple architecture. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 200 Gbs and 240 Gbs time division multiplexed passive optical network (TDM-PON) downstream transmissions based on four-level pulsed amplitude (PAM-4) modulation with direct detection in O-band. A high bandwidth thin film lithium niobate modulator is adopted to generate high Baudrate optical signal at the optical line terminal (OLT) side. A pre-amplified semiconductor optical amplifier SOA is employed at the optical network unit (ONU) side to improve the power budget. Several DSP algorithms are studied to compensate the linear and nonlinear distortions. We also propose a simplified Volterra nonlinear equalizer (S-VNLE) to reduce the computational complexity. Considering the soft-decision FEC (SD-FEC) threshold (1 102), over 29 dB and 28 dB power budgets are achieved respectively for 200 Gbs and 240 Gbs PON system after 20 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) based on our proposed S-VNLE.

Abstract:The coherent passive optical network (PON) is a promising solution for the next generation of high-speed optical access network, capable of supporting 100G and beyond data rate. Moreover, the flexibility and adaptability of coherent PON (CPON) have attracted increasing interest. A flexible PON can enhance system throughput through adaptive modulation formats, baud rates, and coding techniques. One critical challenge for adaptive-modulation flexible CPON is the need for fast-tracking of the channel status, particularly for the downstream transmission. This is particularly important as signals with different modulation formats are continuous in downstream transmission. In the present study, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a pilot-aided digital signal processing (DSP) scheme in a 300 G flexible CPON based on 41664-QAMs, which avoids burst-signal processing in downstream transmission during modulation-format switching. The pilot symbols that we insert enable continuous tracking of the state-of-polarization, finite impulse response (FIR) coefficients for channel equalization, and carrier phase. The feasibility of the proposed pilot-aided DSP scheme was verified experimentally in four transmission cases involving different modulation formats. As a proof of concept, we achieved continuous signal processing in the downstream coherent signal detection, enabling 100-300 G flexible data transmission. We achieved total power budgets of 38, 30, and 20 dB for 25-GBaud polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) 41664-QAM signals after 20-km single-mode fiber (SMF), respectively.

Abstract:The surging growth in data traffic has necessitated the development of higher-speed, lower-latency intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) passive optical networks (PONs) with higher power budgets. To address the inherent limitations of traditional silica-based solid-core fibers, anti-resonant hollow-core fibers have garnered significant attention from both academia and industry. In this Letter, we present an experimental demonstration of 100 Gb/s PAM-4 IM/DD PON transmission over a 20 km anti-resonant hollow-core fiber in the C band, utilizing low-complexity digital signal processing (DSP). The result achieves a record high power budget of 42.5 dB, facilitated by a 3-tap weighted lookup table (LUT) at the optical line terminal (OLT) side and a semiconductor optical amplifier used as a preamplifier at the optical network unit (ONU) side. This represents the highest power budget reported for IM/DD PON to date, to the best of our knowledge, and offers a promising alternative for the future evolution of PON systems.

Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate what we believe to be a novel wavelength division multiplexing-passive optical networking (WDM-PON) architecture compatible with 60 GHz radio-over-fiber systems to simultaneously provide wireless or wired services. We place each wireless/wire-line channel in one WDM slot to carry a 2.5 Gb/s orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal and reuse downstream wavelengths of the wireless and wire-line channels for uplink by an on-off-keying modulation format signal. For the independent design for wireless and wire-line channels, the layouts of wireless or wire-line channels are flexible for different applications.
