Abstract:Stable longitudinal multi-mode chromium and ytterbium co-doped Cr,Yb:YAG self-Q-switched laser formed by a plano-concave resonator has been demonstrated at room temperature without cooling system. An average output power of as much as 70 mW at 1.03 mu n with a pulse width (FWHM) as short as 12.3 ns was obtained with 5% transmission output coupler. High beam quality (M-2<2.4) output with transverse gaussian profile was obtained. The non-linear mode coupling effects of this longitudinal multi-mode laser was investigated and stable pulse sequence was attributed to the non-linear mode coupling effects between main mode oscillation and the side-mode oscillation. Abstract:An electro-optical modulator (EOM) and Cr4＋:YAG saturable-absorber-based doubly Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1.06μm with single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) output was demonstrated. The spatial-hole-burning suppression and cavity axial-mode selection were provided by a twisted-mode technique and resonant-reflector-mediated SLM operation. The Cr4＋:YAG initial transmittance (T0) affected the pulse profile, pulse energy, and laser spectra, which were analyzed theoretically and experimentally. Consequently, the laser output obtained an SLM rate of 96.2% with a symmetry factor of 0.64 when T0 was 6.2%. The results indicate that symmetric and SLM laser pulse can be obtained in a double Q-switched laser by adjusting the cavity loss according to T0. Compared with a solely Q-switched laser, the double Q-switches of EOM and Cr4＋:YAG provide a practical route toward the generation of a symmetric temporal profile and SLM operation.

Abstract:This paper reports results of study on self-Q-switched Cr 4+ , Nd 3+ : YAG microchip lasers at 1.064 μm using a quasi-monolithic setup. Pulses with 6 to 60 ns wide (FWHM) and TEM00 mode produced under cw pumping with repetition rates ranging from 1.5 kHz to 23 kHz. Pulsed pumping yielded output pulses with repetition rates from 1Hz to several kHz and excellent pulse stability. A pulsed pumped microchip oscillator and flash lamp pumped amplifiers were used to set up a MOPA (Master Oscillator and Power Amplifier) system generating 225 kW pulses with 8 ns width.

Abstract:Simultaneous passive Q-Switching and mode locking at low pump power was observed in a Laser Diode (LD) pumped Nd3+:YVO4-Cr4+:YAG laser, detailed studies were experimentally carried out. A fiber-coupled LD with maximum output power of 2 W is used as pump source. In a 50cm long cavity, the repetition rate of obtained mode-locking pulse train is about 300MHz, and the pulse duration was estimated to be at sub-nanosecond level. The repetition rate of the passive Q-Switched pulse train varies from 10kHz similar to 130kHz with the increasing of the pump power. It was found that the threshold of incident pump power to generate mode-lock in such a laser is dependent on the position of Cr4+:YAG crystal inside the cavity. Select proper Cr4+:YAG as saturable absorber and optimize its position, simultaneous Q-Switching and mode-locking occurred in the Nd3+:YVO4 laser at pump power as low as about 200 mW. The experimental result demonstrates the possibility of obtains ultra short optical pulse in a simple and low cost way, which is of great interest in some applications.

Abstract:By use of a laser diode as a pump source, a self-Q-switched laser from a Cr, Nd:YAG crystal is demonstrated. The output Q-switched traces are very stable, the threshold pump power is 3.5 W, the pulse duration is 50 ns, and the slope efficiency is as high as 20%. In addition, the pulse width remains constant while the pulse repetition rate varies with pump power.

Abstract:A diode end-pumped self Q-switched Cr 4+ , Nd 3+ : YAG laser was established with 30-ns pulse width (FWHM) and 0.5-μJ pulse energy output. In normal pulse pumping operation, the lasing threshold changed greatly from 122 mJ to 2.4 mJ as the pump pulse frequency varied from 1 Hz to 500 Hz due to pumping-induced thermal effect. A pre-pumping method was proposed and the change of the lasing threshold was reduced; programmable Q-pulse output with maximum frequency of 16 kHz and high stability was achieved.

Abstract:A stable passively Q-switched Nd:YAG/Cr/sup 4+/:YAG microchip laser is presented. For repetition rates between 1 and 100 kHz, interpulse timing jitter and amplitude variation are better than /spl plusmn/1 and /spl plusmn/0.6%, respectively. It was experimentally demonstrated that multi-amplitude-pulse generation at high pulse repetition rates is due to multi-longitudinal-mode operation.

Abstract:We design and demonstrate a thermally stable four-mirror discrete-component planar ring cavity for Q-switched laser output. An 880 nm fiber-coupled laser diode is used to pump a-cut Nd:YVO4 directly. A magnetic rotation glass (MR3-2) inserted into a permanent cylinder magnet, in combination with a half-wave plate and the polarized emission properties of Nd: YVO4, is used to obtain unidirectional laser operation. With this setup, for a pump power of 5 W, 2.75 W of continuous 1064 nm single-frequency laser output is obtained. Next, a Cr:YAG with small signal transmittance of 75% is inserted in between the two concave mirrors where the beam waist is located. Consequently, a passive Q-switching single-frequency linear polarization pulse with an average power of 1.02 W, pulse width of 60 ns, frequency of 21 kHz, peak power of 810 W, and single-pulse energy of 48 mu J is obtained. Further, we also propose a new method of using a Fabry-Perot (FP) scanning interferometer to observe high-repetition rate Q-switched pulse output longitudinal-mode signals. Abstract:Using a LD as die pumping source in the CW mode and pulsed mode, we have got the self-Q-switched laser in the co-doped Cr4+:Nd3+:YAG microchip with 2mm thickness. When the LD operated in cw mode, the output laser is self Q-switched due to the saturable absorption of the Cr4+ center. Using the cw pumping laser of 3.3W, the output laser of 3.86mW operated in the quasi-CW mode with the repetition rate of 13KHz and the pulse width of 40ns was obtained. Using the pulsed pumping with 100Hz repetition rate and 5ms pulse width, the laser pulse series with several sub-pulses is obtained.

Abstract:Using a Cr4+:Nd3+:YAG monolithic microchip pumped by a Laser Diode (LD), the self Q-switched laser pulses are obtained. The resonator is made up directly from both parallel surface of the Cr4+:Nd3+:YAG microchip. There are two kinds of way to pump the microchip by LD. In the first case, the Cr4+:Nd3+:YAG monolithic microchip pumped by LD with CW operation. The output self Q-switched laser pulses with the repetition rate of 2.78kHz and pulse width of 6ns are obtained. In the second case, the Cr4+:Nd3+:YAG microchip is pumped by LD in the pulsed operation with pre-pumping. The Q-switched output laser with a controllable repetition rate and pulse width of 8ns is achieved. In this case, the LD is driven with a weak modulated current over the direct base current which is near the threshold. The base current is modulated by prearranged repetition rate of 1similar to100Hz. With such a pulse operation, the output laser pulse with the same repetition rate can be obtained. This monolithic microchip laser possess higher transform efficiency, narrow pulse width and controllable repetition rate.

Abstract:A novel monolithic passively Q-switched microchip laser is presented with a microcavity by directly growing a thin Cr4+:YAG film with saturable absorption on the surface of the laser medium Nd3+:YAG by liquid phase epitaxy. Because of the homogeneous epitaxial process, a good interface property is achieved between active medium Nd3+:YAG and saturable absorber Cr4+:YAG. Pumped by 1 W output of a fiber-coupled laser diode, the novel laser produces Q-switched pulses sequence with wavelength 1.064 μm, pulse duration 1.8 ns, pulse repetition over 4 kHz, TEM00 mode and peak power nearly 1 kW. Except for the detailed descriptions of the performance of the laser, the potential advantages of the structure and relevant processes are also discussed.

Abstract:A monolithic Nd:YAG microchip laser with [110] cut Cr4+ YAG is presented. The output beam is lineraly polarized with polarization ratio higher than 100.1. The polarization direction is stable, independent of pump power, crystal temperature, LD temperature. In single longitudinal mode operation, stable 259 ps pulses at 2.5 KHz with 82 kW peak poer and diffraction limited beam mode are output. with a simple and compact one-pass Ne:YVO4 amplifier, 144 kW peak power is achieved. Single longitudinal and fundamental transverse mode is kept after passing through the amplifier stage. Abstract:A passively Q-switched side-pumped laser with folded resonator is specially constructed for single-longitudinal-mode smooth pulse output. Nd:YAG is chosen as the laser active medium and Cr4+ :YAG as the saturable absorber medium. Additionally, the method of frequency selection by grating with 1200 line/mm and Fabry-Perot (F-P) etalon is used in the twisted-mode cavity. The single-frequency smooth pulses are produced with 10-Hz repetition rate, 20-ns pulse width, and 1.064-mu m wavelength. The probability of single-frequency laser output measured is over 99% by using the methods of Fourier analysis and F-P etalon multiple-beam interferometry at the threshold voltage. The measured near-field and far-field angles of divergence are 1.442 and 1.315 mrad, respectively. The values of M-2 are 1.32 and 1.31 separately with the knife-edge method. Single pulse at 1.064 mu m with the energy of 8.8 mJ is achieved in TEM00 mode.

Abstract:The reason for the instability of passively Q-snitched lasers has been analyzed. Based on those reasons a novel model named pre-pumping passively Q switching is presented. The model we developed accounts for the properties of the lasing material, the saturable absorber, the pumping power and the resonator. With the aid of new factor f(p), we calculate the effects of pre-pumping mechanism on the pulse output energy. Like the model of Guohua Xiao the express we derived can be used to optimize the laser's performance.

Abstract:CW LD-pumped Cr4+:YAG passively Q-switched Nd3+:YAG microchip laser was discussed theoretically and experimentally. The coupled rate equations were derived for passively CW pumped Q-switched microchip laser including excited state absorption (ESA). Influences of the parameters of microchip laser on pulse width (FWHM) and peak power of laser pulse were analyzed. And some efficient design principles for stable output of the microchip laser were given accordingly. With low small-signal transmission of the saturable absorber (T0=40%), experimental results showed that pulse peak power instability was achieved to be less than ±0.7%, pulse width (FWHM) instability was less than ±1.0% and the laser output peak power was more than 1 kW in the LD-pumped passively Q-switched Nd3+:YAG microchip laser.

Abstract:A compact diode-pumped passively Q-switched laser has been demonstrated with a coated Cr/sup 4+/:YAG crystal as both a saturable absorber and an output coupler. When CW pumped with a fibre coupled laser diode, the laser produces pulses of 5-30 ns duration, with a repetition rate of 75-90 kHz. The highest peak power was 430 W, obtained at 1.6 W of pump power, which is a 520 times enhancement in comparison to an output power of 830 mW under CW operation.

Abstract:Double Q-switched Laser is realized using LD End-pumped Nd3+:YAG crystal, AO modulator and Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber. The repetition frequency, average output power and pulse width of the laser pulses were investigated experimentally. When the double Q-switched laser works at a stable repetition frequency, in comparison with the single Q-switched case, it is found that the pumped threshold electric current is a little higher, whereas the average output power is lower, the pulse width is narrower and the compression of the pulse width occurs mainly at the fall-edge time. Hence, double Q-switch is advantageous to improve the symmetry of the laser pulse output.
