Abstract:We studied experimentally and numerically how the cavity shape affects the lasing frequency and lasing threshold in semiconductor micro-stadiums. We found there exist optimal deformations at which the lasing threshold is minimized.

Abstract:We presented a detailed experimental study on lasing in GaAs microstadium with various shapes. Unlike most deformed microcavities, the lasing threshold varies non-monotonically with the major-to-minor-axis ratio of the stadium. Under spatially uniform optical pumping, the first lasing mode corresponds to a high-quality scar mode consisting of several unstable periodic orbits. By tuning the shape of GaAs stadium, we are able to minimize the lasing threshold. This work demonstrates the possibility of controlling chaotic microcavity laser.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a hybrid structure microlaser on chip with a single CdSe nanowire attached to a high-Q silica microdisk cavity at room temperature. When pumped by a 532 nm pulse laser, both single-longitudinal mode and multi-longitudinal mode lasers with linewidth of 0.18 nm are obtained from the hybrid structure with a 58-mu m-diameter microdisk and a 250-nm diameter nanowire. The measured lasing threshold of the microlaser is as low as 100 mu J/cm(2). (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The effective manipulation of mode oscillation and competition is of fundamental importance for controlling light emission in semiconductor lasers. Here we develop a rate equation model which considers the spatially modulated gain and spontaneous emission, which are inherently governed by the ripple of the vacuum electromagnetic field in a Fabry-Pérot (FP) microcavity. By manipulating the interplay between the spatial oscillation of the vacuum field and external optical injection via dual-beam laser interference, single longitudinal mode operation is observed in a FP-type microcavity with a side mode suppression ratio exceeding 40 dB. An exploration of this extended rate equation model bridges the gap between the classical model of multimode competition in semiconductor lasers and a quantum-optics understanding of radiative processes in microcavities.

Abstract:The authors investigate the lasing modes in fully chaotic polymer microstadiums under optical pumping. The lasing modes are regularly spaced in frequency, and their amplitudes oscillate with frequency. The numerical simulations reveal that the lasing modes are multiorbit scar modes. The interference of partial waves propagating along the constituent orbits results in local maxima of quality factor at certain frequencies. The observed modulation of lasing mode amplitude with frequency results from the variation of quality factor, which provides the direct evidence of wave interference effect in open chaotic microcavities.

Abstract:We investigate lasing and output directionality of limacon-shaped microdisk lasers of dimensions comparable to the emission wavelength. The far-field patterns are shown to differ between lasing modes, unlike in large cavities where lasing modes exhibit universal emission directionality determined by chaotic ray dynamics. Unidirectional emission is obtained for certain modes in the wavelength-scale cavities. It results from weak coupling of nearly isotropic high-quality resonances to anisotropic low-quality resonances, combined with chiral symmetry breaking of clockwise and counterclockwise propagating waves. The latter is described by an extended ray dynamics which includes the Goos-Hanchen shift and the Fresnel filtering. Mode hybridization and wave effects in open cavities make it possible to control the output properties of individual lasing modes in wavelength-scale lasers.

Abstract:We present the design and simulation of a 450 nm GaN-based V-cavity tunable laser without grating and epitaxial regrowth. Quantum well structure has been optimized to realize good optical confinement. The simulation results show that 20 channels with 300GHz spacing can be achieved, with a tuning range of 4.1 nm and high high side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 30 dB.

Abstract:Abstract We optimize the structure of a silicon-based InAs/InGaAs quantum dot square microcavity laser with an output waveguide structure. By designing a new laser structure, the emission wavelength is extended to 1550 nm. We investigate the structure parameters that affect the quality factor and optical mode of the square microcavity, including the side length of the microcavity, the width of the output waveguide, the cladding layer thickness and the etching depth. By connecting the output waveguide at the edge-midpoint of the square microcavity, both the unidirectional emission and mode selectivity can be obtained, which avoids mode competition. The 1550 nm wavelength single-mode laser is beneficial and has reat significance for the development of silicon-based optoelectronic integration.

Optimizing the Cavity-Arm Ratio of V-Shaped Semiconductor Disk Lasers

Abstract:Passively mode-locked semiconductor disk lasers have received tremendous attention from both science and industry. Their relatively inexpensive production combined with excellent pulse performance and great emission wavelength flexibility make them suitable laser candidates for applications ranging from frequency comb tomography to spectroscopy. However, due to the interaction of the active medium dynamics and the device geometry, emission instabilities occur at high pump powers and thereby limit their performance potential. Hence, understanding those instabilities becomes critical for an optimal laser design. Using a delay-differential equation model, we are able to detect, understand, and classify three distinct instabilities that limit the maximum achievable pump power for the fundamental mode-locking state and link them to characteristic positive net-gain windows. We furthermore derive a simple analytic approximation in order to quantitatively describe the stability boundary. Our results enable us to predict the optimal laser cavity configuration with respect to positive net-gain instabilities and are therefore of great relevance for the future development of passively mode-locking semiconductor disk lasers.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate spatio-temporal lasing dynamics in semiconductor microcavities with various geometries, featuring integrable or chaotic ray dynamics. The classical ray dynamics directly impacts the lasing dynamics, which is primarily determined by the local directionality of long-lived ray trajectories. The directionality of optical propagation dictates the characteristic length scales of intensity variations, which play a pivotal role in nonlinear light-matter interactions. While wavelength-scale intensity variations tend to stabilize lasing dynamics, modulation on much longer scales causes spatial filamentation and irregular pulsation. Our results will pave the way to control the lasing dynamics by engineering the cavity geometry and ray dynamical properties.

Abstract:Spectral and directional control of thermal emission based on excitation of confined electromagnetic resonant modes paves a viable way for the design and construction of microscale thermal emitters/absorbers. In this paper, we present numerical simulation results of the thermal radiative properties of a silicon carbide (SiC) thermal emitter/absorber composed of periodic microstructures. We illustrate different electromagnetic resonant modes which can be excited with the structure, such as surface phonon polaritons, magnetic polaritons and photonic crystal modes, and the process of radiation spectrum optimization based on a non-linear optimization algorithm. We show that the spectral and directional control of thermal emission/absorption can be efficiently achieved by adjusting the geometrical parameters of the structure. Moreover, the optimized spectrum is insensitive to 3% dimension modification.

Abstract:High-Q deformed silica microsphere cavities are fabricated by short CO(2) laser pulses, where the deformation is well controlled by adjusting the intensity and number of pulses. Using this method, directional emission from whispering-gallery mode (WGM) with a high quality factor of 10(7) in these microspheres is achieved, and a transition from two-directional to single-directional emission is observed. Such concentrated directional emission and high-Q of WGMs show high potential for future studies of the chaotic ray dynamics in deformed microcavity and cavity quantum electrodynamics and optomechanics.

Abstract:In this study, surface plasmon-enhanced nanolasers beyond the optical diffraction limit with different structural parameters have been designed and analyzed to optimize the surface plasmon coupling efficiency. Electric field energy can be highly confined in the ultrathin insulating region, as revealed via simulated distribution of the electric field using COMSOL Multiphysics software, resulting in an enhanced stimulated emission of radiation. Additionally, through optimizing the structural parameters, the optical performance of plasmon-enhanced nanolasers was significantly improved, with a threshold as low as ∼4 W cm−2 and a Quality (Q) factor of up to 196 under optical pumping.

Abstract:The influence of structural parameters on laser wavelength continuous tuning range in external cavity semiconductor laser with Littrow configuration is studied. The influence of allowed machining errors at the key points such as the mirror rotation axis on laser wavelength continuous tuning range is calculated. The details of designing external cavity semiconductor laser are presented. An external cavity semiconductor laser is designed, and with a commercial semiconductor laser tube it can produce qualified 780 nm laser, with line width less than 1 MHz and wavelength continuous tuning range of 3 GHz. The semiconductor laser is frequency stabilized by use of the third and fifth harmonics of Rb saturated absorption spectra. The method for optimizing the laser frequency short-term stability is proposed, and the choice of modulating depth is explained theoretically in detail. With the proposed frequency stabilizing method, the stability of laser reaches 10-12 at 780 nm wavelength.

Abstract:A strongly coupled external cavity semiconductor laser with stable frequency operation is reported in this paper. The typical linewidth, maximum tuning range and side-mode suppression ratio of the device are 100 kHz, 120 nm and 35 dB, respectively. The operation frequency is quite stable because of adopting strong external cavity feedback, temperature compensation cavity structure and double-stage temperature control. With the aid of active frequency control loop the frequency shift can be limited within several MHz over 24 hours. More than twenty tunable narrow-linewidth external-cavity semiconductor lasers have been developed in China.

Abstract:Through the numerical method to resolve the rate equation, an optimization of Q-switched microchip lasers is demonstrated. First, from the numerical result of rate equation, the effect of the key parameters to the passively Q-switched lasers is brought, including the initial transmission of the absorber, the reflection of output coupler, the remaining round-trip dissipative optical loss and the radius of the pumping laser beam. Then, based on the results of numerical solution, techniques for optimization of passively Q-switched microchip lasers are brought forward, such as reducing the length of laser cavity and the remaining round-trip dissipative optical loss, choosing appropriate reflection of output coupler and the initial transmission of the absorber. Final, the optimization effect is demonstrated by two kinds of passively Q-switched Nd∶YAG/Cr∶YAG microchip lasers made in lab.

Abstract:We perform extended numerical studies to maximize the overall photon coupling efficiency of fiber-coupled quantum dot single-photon sources emitting in the near-infrared and O-band and C-band. Using the finite element method, we optimize the photon extraction and fiber-coupling efficiency of quantum dot single-photon sources based on micromesas, microlenses, circular Bragg grating cavities and micropillars. The numerical simulations which consider the entire system consisting of the quantum dot source itself, the coupling lens, and the single-mode fiber, yield overall photon coupling efficiencies of up to 83%. Our work provides objectified comparability of different fiber-coupled single-photon sources and proposes optimized geometries for the realization of practical and highly efficient quantum dot single-photon sources.

Abstract:We study light emission patterns from stadium-shaped semiconductor (GaAs) microcavity lasers theoretically and experimentally. Performing systematic wave calculations for passive cavity modes, we demonstrate that the averaging by low-loss modes, such as those realized in multi-mode lasing, generates an emission pattern in good agreement with the ray model's prediction. In addition, we show that the dependence of experimental far-field emission patterns on the aspect ratio of the stadium cavity is well reproduced by the ray model.

Abstract:Cavity nonlinear optics enables intriguing physical phenomena to occur at micro- or nano-scales with modest input powers. While this enhances capabilities in applications such as comb generation, frequency conversion and quantum optics, undesired nonlinear effects including photorefraction and thermal bistability are exacerbated. In this letter, we propose and demonstrate a highly effective method of achieving cavity stabilization using an auxiliary laser for controlling photorefraction in a z-cut periodically poled lithium niobate (LN) microcavity system. Our numerical study accurately models the photorefractive effect under high input powers, guiding future analyses and development of LN microcavity systems.
