Abstract:The enormous traffic growth sets a stringent requirement to upgrade short-reach optical links to 1.6 TbE capacity in an economically viable way. The power consumption and latency in these links should be as low as possible, especially for high-speed computing. This is possible to achieve using high baudrate on-off keying links thanks to a better noise tolerance and a relaxed requirement on linearity for electronics and photonics. In this regard, we demonstrate a 200 Gbaud on-off keying link without any optical amplification using an externally modulated laser with 3.3 dBm of modulated output power operating at 1541.25 nm wavelength. We achieve transmission over 200 meters of single-mode fiber with performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction threshold for each baudrate and all selection of modulation formats. We also show 108 Gbaud on-off keying link with superior performance without decision feedback equalizer up to 400 meters of single-mode fiber. In addition, we benchmark the short-reach optical link with 112 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation and 100 Gbaud six-level pulse amplitude modulation. For 108 Gbaud on-off keying and 112 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation, we can achieve an even lower bit error rate.

Abstract:Various optical-delay buffer architectures and delay media that are suitable for use in optical packet switches are discussed in this paper. In particular, a novel type of folded-path buffer architecture that can provide a large range of variable delays will be described in detail. This buffer is able to dynamically reconfigure itself within nanoseconds due to the use of high-speed ON-OFF optical-signal reflectors. Three different types of such reflectors are proposed, and their performances are measured and compared against one another with the aid of a simulation model. In addition, the optimal operating conditions for the reflectors will be determined so that the optical buffer can provide the maximum range of delay values, while incurring the least power penalty. An example of a performance-optimized optical buffer with multiple sections will also be provided to illustrate how variable delays, ranging from a few nanoseconds to tens of microseconds, can be achieved.

Abstract:A novel all-optical buffer based on adjustable time delay line is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This physically compact buffer can be used in optical packet routers and is dynamically reconfigurable within nanoseconds. By using a flexible folded-path architecture design, packets are controlled to exit the buffer immediately or after a variable delay time. Furthermore, this functionality is achieved without sacrificing the scalability and compactness of the design.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 40 Gb/s self-synchronizing, all-optical packet clock recovery circuit designed for efficient packet-mode traffic. The circuit locks instantaneously and enables sub-nanosecond packet spacing due to thelow clock persistence time. A low-Q Fabry-Perot filter is used as a passive resonator tuned to the line-rate that generates a retimed clock-resembling signal. As a reshaping element, an optical power-limiting gate is incorporated to perform bitwise pulse equalization. Using two preamble bits, the clock is captured instantly and persists for the duration of the data packet increased by 16 bits. The performance of the circuit suggests its suitability for future all-optical packet-switched networks with reduced transmission overhead and fine network granularity.

Abstract:In this paper, we have experimentally demonstrated the C-band 4 x 25-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero ON-OFF-keying (NRZ-OOK) signals over a 160-km single-mode fiber transmission based on 10G-class directly-modulated lasers and photodiodes. The excessive negative dispersion at the receiver side is used to equalize the frequency response of bandwidth-limited directly-modulated signal, therefore enables 25-Gb/s N AZ-OOK transmission based on 10G-class optical devices. By employing a multichannel chromatic dispersion compensation module in the receiver, a single optical device can be used to equalize the frequency response of multiple channels realizing low-cost and high-capacity signal transmission. The results shown in this paper reveal that our proposed scheme would be a promising candidate for a low-cost transition to 100 Gb/s (4 x 25 Gb/s) for the point-to-point metro network applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel decimal optical buffer scheme based on multi-loop configuration and single switch element - an optical crosspoint switch (OXS) matrix. Our results show that by using a differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) payload in the buffer can outperform OOK payload with 3.2 dB sensitivity improvement owing to its alleviation of patterning induced degradation compared to OOK payload, clearly validating DPSK as a promising modulation format to overcome nonlinear impairments and to extend number of hops in all-optical packet switching network.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the generation, the detection and the performance evaluation of a novel return-to-zero frequency shift keying (RZ-FSK) format for 40 Gb/s transmission. Non-return-to-zero (NRZ) FSK signal is generated by using two continues-wave (CW) lasers, one Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and one Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer (MZDI). A RZ-FSK signal is successfully generated by cascading a dual-arm MZM, which is driven by a sinusoidal voltage at half of the bit rate. The demodulation can be simply achieved on 1 bit rate through one MZDI or an array waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer with balanced detection. By numerical simulation, two types of frequency modulation schemes using MZM or PM, and impact of the frequency tone spacing (FTS) of the generated FSK signal are discussed. The proposed scheme shows that the novel frequency modulation format offers a few transmission advantages comparing with than that of the other traditional modulation formats, such as RZ and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK), under varying dispersion management. The performance analysis of RZ-FSK signal in a 4 × 40 Gb/s WDM transmission system is introduced. We experimentally demonstrate, transparent wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and in a highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNDSF) for a 40 Gb/s RZ-FSK signal, clearly validating the feasibility of all optical signal processing of high-speed RZ-FSK signal. Moreover, we investigate the receiver power penalty for the RZ-FSK signal after a 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission link with matching dispersion compensating fiber (DCF), under the post-compensation management scheme. Since the frequency modulation format is orthogonal to intensity modulation and vector modulation (polarization shift keying), it can be employed in the context of the combined modulation format to decrease the data rate or enhance the symbol rate. It can - - also be utilized in the orthogonal label-switching as the modulation format for the payload or the label.

Abstract:We propose a self-clocking method based on in-band clock pilot insertion at the transmission data signal. The method can achieve clock recovery without the need for an ultrafast phase comparator and a phase-locked loop in the receiver. We demonstrate fast synchronization, low timing jitter, and a highly stable recovered clock from a 160 Gbit/s optical time-division multiplexing data signal after a 51 km fiber transmission. The recovered clock shows no patterning effect with a clock dynamic range of 10 dB for error-free operation of 160 to 40 Gbit/s demultiplexing with a power penalty of 1.1 dB.

Abstract:A radio-over-fiber (RoF) system combines the advantages of fiber and wireless communication, has the characteristics of large bandwidth, low loss, and flexible mobility, and has broad development prospects in the future beyond 5G/6G communication networks. In this paper, we have realized the effective transmission of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift- keying (PDM- QPSK) signals with a transmission rate more than 100 Gbit/ s in the RoF system based on commercial optical transport network (OTN) real- time processing. Specifically, we respectively demonstrate the transmission of PDM-QPSK signals with a frequency of 22 GHz and a transmission rate of 125. 52 Gbit/s in 20 km+ 25 km two- span fiber and PDM-QPSK signals in 20 km+ 25 km two- span fiber and 1 cm wireless links with a frequency of 60 GHz and a transmission rate of 125. 52 Gbit/s. The results show that if soft-decision forward- errorcorrection (SD-FEC) coding with a 15% overhead is enabled, error-free transmission can be realized. In addition, we propose a new method for polarization modulation by an integrated dual- polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP- MZM) in the real- time processing. The RoF system reduces system complexity, which has great application value in future mobile data communication networks.
Experimental Study of High-Speed Differential Phase-Shift Keying Signal Long-Haul Transmission

Abstract:The high-speed single-channel transmission of nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK) signal is demonstrated using fiber loop. The 414 km fiber loop is divided into four spans, which consist of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and dispersion compensation fiber (DCF), and erbium-doped fiber amplifier/distributed Raman amplifier (EDFA/PRA) are used for hybrid amplification. The optical spectrum and eye diagrams of 42.8 Gb/s DPSK signal are obtained after 414 km, 828 km and 1242 km transmission. The curves of bit error rate (BER) of the DPSK signal are given both in back-to-back configuration and after transmission using single-ended detection. The BER is 6.3 × 10-4 after 1242 km transmission, and the error-free transmission can be realized using enhanced forward error correction (FEC).

Abstract:The performance of 40-Gb/s RZ signals through cascaded thinfilm filters is investigated by both numerical and analytical means. It is observed that the filtering effects can reduce the eye closure penalties caused by the large dispersion slope of the thin-film filters. In addition, the performance can be further improved by proper frequency detuning between the signal and the center of the filter. The combined effects of dispersion slope and filtering on 40-Gb/s signals are investigated analytically and explained for typical bit patterns.

Abstract:We experimentally show the first demonstration of optically labeled 100-Gb/s packet polarization-multiplexing signals passing through four optical wavelength-selective switching (OWSS) nodes. In this architecture, the payload is generated by polarization-multiplexing return-to-zero octaphase-shift-keying format at 114 Gb/s, and 2.5-Gb/s on-off keying signal is used for the carrying label. By using the vestigial sideband filtering, the spectra efficiency is increased up to 1 b/Hz/s. The bit-error-rate performance for both payload and label are evaluated after passing through four straight-line OWSS nodes in this optical network.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of optical buffer with a fairly large Bandwidth-Delay Product(BDP),which is based on a single micro-ring resonator and an OFDM transmitter.The large BDP is gained by distributing data over the subcarriers of the OFDM system via the resonator.We build a numerical model for the entire system and achieve a large BDP with only five subcarriers considered in the simulation.
