Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer-type optic switch was firstly realized on Si photonic-crystal (PhC) slab structure, by using thermo-optic effect. The maximum extinction ratio was 22 dB, and the switching speed reached 200 mus.

Abstract:A thermooptic switch With a symmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer structure was demonstrated with silicon photonic-crystal-slab line-defect waveguides. The device size was as small as 160 x 65 mu m. The optic switch operated at a wavelength of 1550 nm, and an extinction ratio greater than 30 dB was obtained by 120-mW heating (switching) power over the wavelength range of 15 nm. The switching ON-OFF response times were about 120 mu s.

Abstract:Using silicon photonic wire waveguides, we constructed compact 1 x 1, 1 x 2, and 1 x 4 Mach-Zehnder interferometer type optical switches on a silicon-on-insulator substrate and demonstrated their switching operations through the thermo-optic effect. These switches were smaller than 140 x 65, 85 x 30, and 190 x 75 mum, respectively. At a 1550-nm wavelength, we obtained an extinction ratio larger than 30 dB, a switching power as low as 90 mW, and a switching response time of less than 100 mus. Furthermore, switching operations were successfully demonstrated for the 1 x 4 switch.

Abstract:We present an all-optical switch based on photothermal effects in a silicon Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) integrated with a light absorber. The metal-insulator-metal light absorber located near the longer arm of the asymmetric MZI efficiently converts infrared light to heat. Pumped by a continuous-wave 1064-nm laser, the spectral transmittance of the fully etched strip waveguide (half-etched rib waveguide) MZI can be tuned with an efficiency of 38 pm/mW (98.5 pm/mW). Dynamic switching experiments show that the rise/fall time constant of the output probe light is 11.45/10.98 μs (8.25/7.13 μs) for the fully etched (half-etched) MZI.

Abstract:Optical switch based on an ultra-compact double-slot photonic crystal waveguide (DS-PCWG) with a titanium/aluminum microheater is demonstrated. The operating principle relies on shifting a transmission-dip caused by the defect mode coupling in photonic band gap (PBG). Based on the unique mode coupling in PBG, low switching power of 9.2 mW and high extinction ratio of 17 dB are achieved experimentally while the length of DS-PCWG is only 16 μm.

Abstract:A tunable photonic crystal switch based on two-mode-interference directional coupler is investigated. By modulating the central row of the rods of the coupler to change the real part of the refractive index, the bar-cross switch is obtained. Finite difference time-domain method (FDTD) is employed to predict the characterization of the switch, with crosstalk <-30dB and extinction ratio > 30dB.

Abstract:A photonic switch of 2×3 structure was designed and fabricated using the thermo-optical effect of polymer materials. By setting sectional electrode and exerting voltage to proper section, we can control the reflection region length and ray propagation trace. Input light can be switched freely among three output ports. The experiment results show that, for the “half-reflection” state, the extinction ratio is 16.6dB for the half-reflection port; and for the “bar” state, the extinction ratio for the reflection port is 26.8dB. The power consumption is on the scale of 100mW and varies with different function mode.

Abstract:We design, fabricate, and experimentally demonstrate a compact thermo-optic gate switch comprising a 3.78 um-long coupled L0-type photonic crystalmicrocavities on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. A nanohole is inserted in the center of each individual L0 photonic crystalmicrocavity. Coupling between identical microcavities gives rise to bonding and anti-bonding states of the coupled photonic molecules. The coupled photonic crystalmicrocavities are numerically simulated and experimentally verified with a 6 nm-wide flat-bottom resonance in its transmission spectrum, which enables wider operational spectrum range than microring resonators. An integrated micro-heater is in direct contact with the silicon core to efficiently drive the device. The thermo-optic switch is measured with an optical extinction ratio of 20 dB, an on-off switching power of 18.2 mW, a thermo-optic tuning efficiency of 0.63 nm/mW, a rise time of 14.8 us, and a fall time of 18.5 us. The measured on-chip loss on the transmission band is as low as 1 dB.

Abstract:An all-optical switch is demonstrated. The switch is based on the photon-induced carrier effect and the principle of the total internal reflection (TIR). An asymmetric Y-branch with multimode waveguides is designed and fabricated on GaAlAs/GaAs epitaxial materials. The 805-nm light is used to activate the carrier effects and generate the total-reflection effect at the branch. The device is characterized at the wavelength of 1.31 mum. Its extinction ratio is larger than 18.0 dB when the injected optical density is 15 X 10(1) W/mm(2).

Abstract:A complete design scheme and fabrication results of the total-internal-reflection (TIR) thermo-optic polymeric switch are presented for the first time. The measured results of the 1×2 TIR optical switch with an X junction show that the extinction ratio is about 25 dB at the crossing state while the reflecting state can be obtained with a 22 dB extinction ratio by applying a driving power of 158 mW - a driving voltage of 3.2 V and a related electric current of 49.4 mA.

Abstract:Broadband thermo-optic switch based on an ultra-compact W2 photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) is demonstrated with an integrated titanium/aluminum microheater on its surface. The operating principle relies on shifting a transmission-dip caused by the enhanced coupling between the defect modes in W2 PCW. As a result, broadband switching functionality with larger extinction ratio can be attained. Moreover, microheaters with different width are evaluated by the power consumptions and heating transfer efficiency, and an optimized slab microheater is utilized. Finally, switching functionality with bandwidth up to 24 nm (1557 similar to 1581 nm) is measured by the PCW with footprint of only 8. mx17.6 mu m, while the extinction ratio is in excess of 15 dB over the entire bandwidth. What's more, the switching speed is obtained by the measurement of alternating current modulation. Response time for this thermo-optic switch is 11.0 +/- 3.0 mu s for rise time and 40.3 +/- 5.3 mu s for fall time, respectively.

Abstract:We fabricated various microscopic optical devices using photonic crystal slab and Si-wire waveguides and demonstrated their fundamental characteristics. We demonstrated a channel-dropping filter with a photonic crystal slab point-defect optical cavity. Wavelength resolution of less than 1.5 nm and signal dropping efficiency of more than 90 % were obtained for a 20-gm-square device. We also demonstrated an optical add/drop multiplexer with Bragg grating reflectors made from Si-wire waveguides. Its dropping wavelength bandwidth was less than 2 run, and the center wavelength of the dropped optical signal could be tuned by thenno-optic control using a microheater formed on the Bragg reflector. Using Si-wire waveguide, we also demonstrated thermo-optic switches by forming a micro heater on a branch of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer constructed from the waveguides. In this switching operation, we observed an extinction ratio of more than 30 dB, switching power of less than 100 mW, and switching response speed of less than 100 las using a 1 x 2 optical switch with an 85 x 30 mu m(2) footprint. Using the 1 x 2 optical switch elements, we also fabricated a compact 1 x 4 optical switch and demonstrated its fundamental operation.

Abstract:Response speed and power consumption are improved for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) thermo-optic (TO) switch, by using a hybrid silica/polymer waveguide structure and optimizing both the thickness of the silica under cladding and that of the PMMA-GMA upper cladding. Fabrication techniques, including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), spin-coating and wet-etching, are adopted to develop the switch sample. Under 1550nm wavelength, the driving powers under ON and OFF states are measured to be 0 and 13mW, respectively, indicating a switching power of 13mW. The fiber-to-fiber insertion loss under the ON state is 15 dB, the extinction ratio between the ON state and the OFF state is 18.3 dB, and the rise time and fall time are 73.5 and 96.5 mu s, respectively. Compared with the TO switches based on Si/SiO2 or all-polymer waveguide structure, the proposed device possesses both low power consumption and fast response speed, by virtue of the large TO coefficient of the polymer core, thin upper/under claddings and the large thermal conductivity of silica.

Abstract:Abstract Ultracompact and low-power-consumption optical switches are desired for high-performance telecommunication networks and data centers. Here, we demonstrate an on-chip power-efficient 2 × 2 thermo-optic switch unit by using a suspended photonic crystal nanobeam structure. A submilliwatt switching power of 0.15 mW is obtained with a tuning efficiency of 7.71 nm/mW in a compact footprint of 60 μm × 16 μm. The bandwidth of the switch is properly designed for a four-level pulse amplitude modulation signal with a 124 Gb/s raw data rate. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed switch is the most power-efficient resonator-based thermo-optic switch unit with the highest tuning efficiency and data ever reported.
