Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a liquid-crystal (LC)-based Fourier optical spectrum analyzer (FOSA). The FOSA consists of a birefringent filter array with an embedded LC phase modulator. The LC phase modulator is used to control the phase difference between two orthogonally polarized beams to avoid mechanical movement in conventional Fourier transform spectrometers. The detailed operation principle of this FOSA is described. A single-LC-based 6-stage FOSA is experimentally demonstrated, and the results obtained using such a FOSA show good agreement with the results measured using a reference spectrometer.

Abstract:This study investigates the potential of long-wave infrared (LWIR) free-space optical (FSO) transmission using multilevel signals to achieve high spectral efficiency. The FSO transmission system includes a directly modulated-quantum cascade laser (DM-QCL) operating at 9.1 μm and a mercury cadmium telluride (MCT) detector. We conduct small-signal characterization of the system, including the DM-QCL chip and MCT detector, evaluating the end-to-end response of both components and all associated electrical elements. For large-signal characterization, we employ a range of modulation formats, including on-off keying (OOK), 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and 6-level PAM (PAM6), with the objective of optimizing both the bit rate and spectral efficiency of the FSO transmission by applying pre- and post-processing equalization. At 15˚C, the studied LWIR FSO system achieves gross rates of 16 Gbps with an OOK signal and 18 Gbps with PAM4, both below the 6.25% overhead hard decision-forward error correction (6.25%-OH HD-FEC) limit, and 10 Gbps OOK below the KR-FEC limit. At 20˚C, we obtain 15 Gbps with OOK, 18 Gbps with PAM4, and 17.4 Gbps with PAM6. Furthermore, we evaluate the BER performance as a function of the decision feedback equalization (DFE) tap number to explore the role of equalization in enhancing signal fidelity and reducing errors in FSO transmission. Our findings accentuate the competitive potential of DM-QCL and MCT detector-based FSO transceivers with digital equalization for the next generation of FSO communication systems.
Digital Fourier Transform Spectroscopy: a High-Performance, Scalable Technology for On-Chip Spectrum Analysis

Abstract:Optical spectrum analysis is the cornerstone of spectroscopic sensing, optical network performance monitoring, and hyperspectral imaging. While conventional high-performance spectrometers used to perform such analysis are often large benchtop instruments, on-chip spectrometers have recently emerged as a promising alternative with apparent Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) advantages. Existing on-chip spectrometer designs, however, are limited in spectral channel count and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here we demonstrate a transformative on-chip digital Fourier transform (dFT) spectrometer that can acquire high-resolution spectra via time- domain modulation of a reconfigurable Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The device, fabricated and packaged using industry-standard silicon photonics technology, claims the multiplex advantage to dramatically boost SNR and unprecedented scalability capable of addressing exponentially increasing numbers of spectral channels. We further implemented machine learning regularization techniques to spectrum reconstruction and achieved significant noise suppression and spectral resolution enhancement beyond the classical Rayleigh criterion.

Abstract:To meet the constant demands of high-capacity telecommunications infrastructure, data rates beyond 1 terabit per second per wavelength channel and optical multiplexing are widely applied. However, these features pose challenges for existing data acquisition and optical performance monitoring techniques because of bandwidth limitation and signal synchronization. We designed an approach that would address these limitations by optically converting the frequency limit to an unlimited time axis and combining this with a chirped coherent detection to innovatively obtain the full-field spectrum. With this approach, we demonstrated a real-time Fourier-domain optical vector oscilloscope, with a 3.4-terahertz bandwidth and a 280-femtosecond temporal resolution over a 520-picosecond record length. In addition to on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying signals (128 gigabits per second), quadrature phase-shift keying wavelength division–multiplexed signals (4 × 160 gigabits per second) are simultaneously observed. Moreover, we successfully demonstrate some high-precision measurements, which indicate them as a promising scientific and industrial tool in high-speed optical communication and ultrafast optical measurement.

Abstract:Abstract The analysis of optical spectra—emission or absorption—has been arguably the most powerful approach for discovering and understanding matter. The invention and development of many kinds of spectrometers have equipped us with versatile yet ultra-sensitive diagnostic tools for trace gas detection, isotope analysis, and resolving hyperfine structures of atoms and molecules. With proliferating data and information, urgent and demanding requirements have been placed today on spectrum analysis with ever-increasing spectral bandwidth and frequency resolution. These requirements are especially stringent for broadband laser sources that carry massive information and for dispersive devices used in information processing systems. In addition, spectrum analyzers are expected to probe the device’s phase response where extra information is encoded. Here we demonstrate a novel vector spectrum analyzer (VSA) that is capable of characterizing passive devices and active laser sources in one setup. Such a dual-mode VSA can measure loss, phase response, and dispersion properties of passive devices. It also can coherently map a broadband laser spectrum into the RF domain. The VSA features a bandwidth of 55.1 THz (1260–1640 nm), a frequency resolution of 471 kHz, and a dynamic range of 56 dB. Meanwhile, our fiber-based VSA is compact and robust. It requires neither high-speed modulators and photodetectors nor any active feedback control. Finally, we employ our VSA for applications including characterization of integrated dispersive waveguides, mapping frequency comb spectra, and coherent light detection and ranging (LiDAR). Our VSA presents an innovative approach for device analysis and laser spectroscopy, and can play a critical role in future photonic systems and applications for sensing, communication, imaging, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber spectrum analyzer based on a planar waveguide chip butt-coupled with an input fiber and aligned to a standard camera without any free-space optical elements. The chip consists of a single-mode waveguide to connect with the fiber, a beam broadening area, and a waveguide array in which the lengths of the waveguides are designed for both wavelength separation and beam focusing. The facet of the chip is diced open so that the outputs of the array form a near-field emitter. The far field are calculated by the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral. We show that the chip can provide a focal depth on the millimeter scale, allowing relaxed alignment to the camera without any fine-positioning stage. Two devices with 120 and 220 waveguides are fabricated on the polymer waveguide platform. The measured spectral width are 0.63 nm and 0.42 nm, respectively. This simple and practical approach may lead to the development of a spectrum analyzer for fiber that is easily mountable to any commercial camera, thereby avoiding the complication for customized detectors as well as electronic circuits afterwards.

Abstract:Within the expansive domain of optical sciences, achieving the precise characterization of light beams stands as a fundamental pursuit, pivotal for various applications, including telecommunications and imaging technologies. This study introduces an innovative methodology aimed at reconstructing the Wigner distribution function of optical signals; a crucial tool in comprehending the time-frequency behavior exhibited by these signals. The proposed approach integrates two robust mathematical tools: the discrete realization of fractional Fourier transform, and the propagator of the quantum harmonic oscillator in waveguide arrays. This integration offers a direct and efficient method for characterizing optical signals by reconstructing their Wigner distribution function in the scope of integrated optics. We provide evidence of how having knowledge of the signal propagation amid the phase-space reconstruction, has desirable advantages in respect to only knowing the signal state.

Abstract:By using the birefringent crystal YVO_4, a novel scheme of wavelength monitoring in DWDM optical communication systems is presented. The principle of this scheme is analyzed and its feasibility is inspected with experiments. Theoretical analysis and experimental results both show that it can be applied in C-band wavelength monitoring and locking in DWDM systems. As compared with the method of wavelength monitoring by means of the transmission spectrum of a Fabry-Perot etalon, this scheme has advantages such as easy judgment of normal operation wavelengths, high sensitivity of monitoring and easy integration.

Abstract:A fiber fourier transform spectrometer is developed to meet the commands of the fast spectral measurement.The data acquisition and spectral recovery software for the spectrometer are introduced,including the main program structure and the spectral recovery algorithms.The software can do the real-time data acquisition,processing and show the spectrum.The result has the same shape with the standard spectrum,and the resolution can reach 0.78 cm-1.The software can meet the demands of the practical application.

Abstract:Up-to-date network telemetry is the key enabler for resource optimization by capacity scaling, fault recovery, and network reconfiguration among other means. Reliable optical performance monitoring in general and, specifically, the monitoring of the spectral profile of WDM signals in fixed- and flex- grid architectures across the entire C-band, remains challenging. This article describes a two-stage spectrometer architecture amenable to integration on a single chip that can measure quantitatively the spectrum across the entire C-band with a resolution of ∼ 1.4 GHz. The first stage consists of a ring resonator with intra-ring phase shifter to provide a tuneable fine filter. The second stage makes use of an AWG subsystem and a novel processing algorithm to synthesize a tuneable coarse filter with a flat passband which isolates individual resonances of a multiplicity of ring resonances. The spectrometer is capable of scanning the entire C-band with high resolution using only one dynamic control. Due to its maturity and low loss, CMOS compatible Si3N4 is chosen for fabrication of the ring resonator and two cyclic AWGs. Complete spectrometer operation is demonstrated experimentally over a selected portion of the C-band. A novel virtual channel synthesis algorithm based on the weighted summation of the AWG output port powers relaxes the conventional AWG design requirement of a flat passband and sharp transition to stopband. The operation of the circuit is invariant to the optical path length between individual components and the algorithm corrects to some extent fabrication process variation impairments of the AWG channel spectra substantially improving robustness.

Abstract:In the field of optics, there exist numerous chaotic processes like dissipative soliton dynamics, random laser generation, and laser scattering. It ' s very challenging to accurately capture the dynamics of these stochastic processes from the wavelength perspective with traditional spectrometers due to their slow signal integration speeds. Here, we propose a new approach, named time-delay Fourier transform spectrometer (TDFTS), to characterize the spectra of laser pulses with durations ranging from fs to ns with high speeds. Based on a fiber array with different lengths to impose frequency-dependent time delay, TDFTS efficiently maps the spectral distribution of light pulses to the temporal domain, and the spectrum can thus be detected with a photodiode and an oscilloscope. In experimental operation, the TDFTS provides spectral acquisition speeds up to 56 MHz frame rates and a bandwidth of tens of nanometers, while keeping comparable fidelity to traditional grating-scan spectrometers. While its spectral resolution of the current configuration is similar to 0.1 nm, it can be further improved to 0.001 nm through optimizing the system. Based on its high speed, high spectral resolution, broadbandwidth coverage, and compact configuration, TDFTS can be used to monitor nanosecond-scale spectral dynamics of non-repetitive optical processes.
