Abstract:A new approach of all optical wavelength converter based on four wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with the conjugate wave reflected by a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and then amplified by the SOA is reported. By adjusting the pump power, the conversion efficiency could be improved 7∼10dB with signal-to-background-noise-ratio (SBR) deteriorated 1 ∼2dB, compared with traditional single pump four wave mixing.

Abstract:Using a semiconductor-fiber ring laser, a novel method for the all-optical wavelength conversion based on dual-pump four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is demonstrated. For the input signal with different wavelengths, only one external pump is needed. This scheme can simplify the dual-pump FWM in SOA and has nearly constant conversion efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over 50 nm range of wavelength shifts.

Abstract:All optical wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in a SOA for OFDM optical signal is theoretically and experimentally investigated.2 Gbit/s OFDM is used to modulate directly on the signal lightwave by an external intensity modulator.The modulated signal lightwave and the parallel pumps are coupled and then injected into the SOA for wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM).Experimental result shows that the newly converted wavelength sideband carries OFDM signals and its conversion efficiency relates with the wavelength spacing between the pumps,the wavelength spacing and polarization angle between the pumps and signal lightwave.The BER curves and receive constellation are also measured.

Abstract:We investigate the converted OSNR, the ISI, and the BER performance of all-optical wavelength converter based on FWM in SOA's as functions of the input pump and signal powers. We demonstrate that the converted OSNR and the ISI are two main factors in the BER performance of the wavelength converter. The minimum power penalty of less than 0.6 dB is achieved by optimizing of the input pump and signal power. We also study the important issue of the dynamic range of input signal power. Two approaches to expand the dynamic range have been presented with the resulting dynamic ranges of more than 25 dB and 12 dB respectively and both show good tolerance to variations in input signal power.

Abstract:Performances of wavelength converted signal by cross phase modulation (XPM) using semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA's) were studied by the use of the multi-section model. Results show that they are related to both the phase arm bias current of the XPM wavelength converter and its operation. When the conversion is under the in-phase operation, the peak extinction ratio (ER) and the chirp frequency of the converted signal increase according to the decrease of the phase arm bias current, but the input signal power dynamic range decreases. When the converter is under the out-of-phase operation, the chirp frequency decreases with the decrease of the phase arm bias current, while the peak ER and the input power dynamic range keep almost the same when the phase arm bias current changes.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for 2×11.64 GBaud adaptively-modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AM-OFDM) signals with QPSK/16QAM formats is experimentally demonstrated in a silicon waveguide. The AM-OFDM signal with partly higher- (and lower-) order formats on lower- (and higher-) frequency subcarriers has better overall conversion performance in receiving optical signal-to-noise ratio and power penalty. In comparison with the OFDM-QPSK signal, at the BER of 3.8×10-3, the bit rate increases 11.64 Gbit/s per channel almost without conversion power penalty increased by replacing the QPSK sequence with the 16QAM sequence on half subcarriers.

Abstract:The wavelength conversion of 2.5Gb/s return-to-zero optical pulse based on cross-gain modulation in semiconductor optical amplifier is demonstrated. The separation for up-convertion is larger than 10nm, and down-conversion is larger than 20nm. The relationship between the receiver power and bit error rate is shown. The experiment results show that there are some problems to make return-to-zero optical pulse by cross-gain modulation in SOA.

Abstract:As optical networks advance toward a dynamic multiwavelength all-optical structure, all optical wavelength conversion technologies become vital in the efficient utility of available fiber bandwidth. Experimental demonstrations of optical wavelength conversion usually involves a nonlinear element to transfer the information from the signal wavelength to that of a local laser source. In the case of Non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signals, the local laser source is usually a CW narrow linewidth semiconductor laser. For Return to Zero (RZ) signals, the local laser sources commonly employ a modelocked fiber laser or a modelocked semiconductor laser or a gain switched DFB to generate low jitter optical clock. Various materials and devices can be used as the nonlinear element for wavelength conversion, with the two most common being the optical fiber and semiconductor optical amplifier, though Lithium Niobate has also attracted attention in recent years as a switching element. The advantage of using optical fiber for wavelength conversion is that it is relatively cheap and has low levels of noise. However, the switching energy required to generate the nonlinearity in optical fiber is high compared to that of the SOA [1]. Wavelength conversion using SOA typically uses either four-wave mixing or crosses gain/phase modulation, with the latter method often used in conjunction with an interferometric topology [2]. The advantages of cross phase modulation of SOA in interferometers are the relatively low switching energy required, the fast switching speed, and the ability to integrate the whole structure on a single substrate.

Abstract:We demonstrate all-optical wavelength conversion (AOWC) of non-return-to-zero (NRZ) signal based on cross-gain modulation in a single heterogeneously integrated III-V-on-silicon semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with an optical bandpass filter. The SOA is 500 μm long and consumes less than 250 mW electrical power. We experimentally demonstrate 12.5 Gb/s and 40 Gb/s AOWC for both wavelength up and down conversion.

Abstract:A method for all-optical frequency multiplication/recovery based on the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) ring cavity with the interference is proposed and demonstrated by numerical simulation. This technique can be used to generate low clock amplitude jitter and input polarization independent pulse trains with the repetition rates of 5-25 GHz from 2.5 GHz driving pulse. Bias current of SOA effect on the amplitude of the output pulse train is great, and there is an optimized bias current of SOA for the base frequency of the 2.5 GHz and 10 GHz, respectively. In addition, this scheme can be applied to the extraction of the clock signal from a pseudorandom bit sequence signal.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).
