Abstract:Efficient photoluminescence (PL) up-conversion has been observed in colloidal CdTe quantum dots with an energy gain of as high as 360 meV. Compared with the normal PL, the peak energy of this up-converted PL (UCPL) shows a redshift of about 80 meV, and the corresponding radiative lifetime becomes nearly twice as long. This UCPL is attributed to the carrier recombination involving surface states mainly through a thermal excitation process.

Abstract:Phonon-assisted up-conversion photoluminescence can boost energy of an emission photon to be higher than that of the excitation photon by absorbing vibration energy (or phonons) of the emitter. Here, up-conversion photoluminescence power-conversion efficiency (power ratio between the emission and excitation photons) for CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots is observed to be beyond unity. Instead of commonly known defect-assisted up-conversion photoluminescence for colloidal quantum dots, temperature-dependent measurements and single-dot spectroscopy reveal the up-conversion photoluminescence and conventional down-conversion photoluminescence share the same electron-phonon coupled electronic states. Ultrafast spectroscopy results imply the thermalized excitons for up-conversion photoluminescence form within 200 fs, which is 100,000 times faster than the radiative recombination rate of the exciton. Results suggest that colloidal quantum dots can be exploited as efficient, stable, and cost-effective emitters for up-conversion photoluminescence in various applications.

Abstract:We report on the study of CdSe quantum dot microcavity formed between two distributed Bragg reflectors （DBRs）.The active region consisting of CdSe quantum dots is embedded in PMMA.We use the transfer matrix method （TMM） to simulate the reflectivity spectrum of the microcavity.We demonstrate an enhancement of the spontaneous emission from the colloidal CdSe quantum dots in the microcavity.After embedding the QDs in the cavity,the full width at half maximum （FWHM） is narrowed to 7.5 nm compared with 27.9 nm of QDs in free space.The emission of the quantum dots is enhanced by a factor of 3.7 due to the microcavity effect.

Abstract:All-solution-processed quantum dot (QD) upconversion devices were realized by constructing a colloidal PbS QD near-infrared (NIR ∼ 1 μm)-sensitive layer on the cathode side of a red CdSe quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED). Different from conventional upconversion devices, we utilized the photogenerated electrons rather than the holes created in the NIR-sensitive layer to inject into the QLED for visible light emission. Consequently, we obtained high-performance devices with a maximum photon-to-photon conversion efficiency of 3.35% and a luminance on-off ratio of approximately 8 × 103. The results indicate that the device structure could be used to realize low-cost and portable high-performance QD-based upconversion devices via solution-processing.

Abstract:Abstract Up-conversion electroluminescence, in which the energy of a emitted photon is higher than that of the excitation electron, is observed in quantum-dot light-emitting diodes. Here, we study its mechanism by investigating the effect of thermal energy on the charge injection dynamic. Based on the results of temperature-dependent electroluminescence and theoretical analysis, we reveal that at sub-bandgap voltage, holes can be successfully injected into quantum-dots via thermal-assisted thermionic-emission mechanism, thereby enabling the sub-bandgap turn-on and up-conversion electroluminescence of the devices. Further theoretical deduction and experimental results confirm that thermal-assisted hole-injection is the universal mechanism responsible for the up-conversion electroluminescence. This work uncovers the charge injection process and unlocks the sub-bandgap turn-on mechanism, which paves the road for the development of up-conversion devices with power conversion efficiency over 100%.

Abstract:For optoelectronic applications, colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) have been integrated into solid devices by using optically transparent polymer matrices that embedded the colloidal QDs. We systematically studied the effect of annealing and photoactivation on the band-band (BB) and surface trap state (STS) transitions of colloidal CdSe QDs embedded in polymethylmethacrylate (QDs-PMMA). The QDs-PMMA composites demonstrate enhancement of the STS emissions while their annealing leads to an intensity quench of both BB and STS emissions. The annealing process also causes the red shift of the BB emission. By contrast, photoactivation of QDs-PMMA composites results in the remarkable recovery of luminescence intensity accompanied by blue shift of the emissions. Furthermore, it is found in the photoactivation process that the STS emission can be saturated earlier than the BB emission, which renders it possible to tune the light color of the emissions. The combination of annealing and photoactivation could undoubtedly provide an effective way to precisely tune the colors of light-emitting devices that use colloidal CdSe QDs.

Abstract:Water-soluble CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with green and yellow emission are prepared in aqueous solution using thioglycolic acid (TGA) as stabilizing agent. The as-obtained CdTe QDs are characterized by absorption and photoluminescence spectra. Strong emission is observed when the CdTe QDs are excited by an 800nm femtosecond laser. The ln–ln relations between the integral intensity of CdTe QDs and the excitation power are investigated, and the results indicate that the upconversion luminescence is a two-photon assisted process via a virtual energy state.

Abstract:The spontaneous emission of colloidal CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (CQDs) modified by the hybrid plasmonic-photonic crystal is reported in this paper. By using a spin coater, the spatial overlap between CQDs and the surface resonance modes in this quasi-2D crystal slab is achieved. In this case, the coupling efficiency of them is enhanced greatly and most excited CQDs radiate through the surface modes. Consequently, despite the low refractive index contrast of our hybrid structure, the directionality of spontaneous emission, increased radiative probability and narrowed full width at half maximum of emission peak are all clearly observed by our home-made microscopic angle-resolved spectroscopy and time-resolved photoluminescence system. Our results manifest that the quasi-2D hybrid plasmonic-photonic crystal is an ideal candidate to tailor the radiative properties of CdSe/ZnS CQDs, which might be significant for the applications of light emitting devices.

Abstract:We report our experimental studies of surface-related emission in highly luminescent CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with controlled quantum yield and photooxidation by time-resolved photoluminescence measurements. This kind of surface-related emission, with a radiative lifetime of tens of nanoseconds, implies the involvement of surface states in the carrier recombination process of such highly luminescent CdSe QDs.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and photoactivation (PA) effects are combined for the tuning of fluorescent colors of colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs). It is found that LSPR with QD emitters intensely enhances surface state emission, accompanied by a remarkable red-shift of fluorescent colors, while PA treatment with colloidal QDs leads to a distinct enhancement of band-edge emission, accompanied by a peak blue-shift. Furthermore, the LSPR effect on QD emitters can be continuously tuned by the PA process. The combination of the post-synthetic approaches allows feasible realization of multi-color patterns from one batch of QDs and the approaches can also be compatible with other micro-fabrication technologies of QD embossed fluorescent patterns, which undoubtedly provides a way of precisely tuning the colors of light-emitting materials and devices that use colloidal QDs.
Plasmon-Enhanced Surface-State Emission of CdSe Quantum Dots and Its Application to Microscale Luminescence Patterns

Abstract:In this paper, we report distinct enhancement of surface-state emissions (SSEs) of colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) via coupling to localized plasmons (LPs) in Ag nanostructures. The roles of oleic acid (OA) ligand on QDs in the formation of Ag nanostructures and in the intense enhancement of SSEs of CdSe QDs are explored. We find that OA ligand on CdSe QDs plays a critical role in modifying the morphology of the contacted Ag, which consequently impacts the coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag. A systematic study of size effect of QDs on coupling of SSEs with LPs shows that as-deposited small Ag particles favorably enhance the SSEs of small-size CdSe QDs. The OA ligand on QDs yields better Ag crystallinity and clear corners during the annealing process; therefore, it promotes reshaping of small Ag particles into larger ones, favorable to enhance the SSEs of large-size CdSe QDs. The annealed QDs/Ag hybrid structures are more stable than the unannealed ones due to the loss of the OA ligand in the heating process. The selective coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag nanostructures allows feasible realization of microscale fluorescent color patterns. The approach of OA-assisted modification of plasmonic properties of Ag nanostructures provides a new route to synthesizing bright luminescence materials and devices that use colloidal QDs.

Abstract:High quality Mn2+-doped CdTe quantum dots (QDs), Co2+-doped CdTe QDs and Mn2+&Co2+ co-doped CdTe QDs were successfully synthesized via an aqueous phase method with mercaptopropanoic acid (MPA) ligands. The doped QDs maintain the same zinc blende structure of CdTe by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The Mn2+-doped CdTe QDs and Co2+-doped CdTe QDs both show a red-shift on absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra compared to pure CdTe QDs. In addition, Mn2+-doped CdTe QDs show a significant increase in the PL lifetime due to an orbitally forbidden d-d transition, which is of benefit to the reduction of electron recombination loss. Co2+ doping has a more matched doping energy level. In view of this, Mn2+&Co2+ co-doped CdTe QDs were applied as sensitizers for quantum dot sensitized solar cells, resulting in a significantly enhanced efficiency.
Wave-Function Engineering of CdSe/CdS Core/Shell Quantum Dots for Enhanced Electron Transfer to a TiO<sub>2</sub>Substrate

Abstract:In this paper, we have synthesized a series of core/shell quantum dots (QDs) for the purpose of enhancing the electron transfer from the dots to a TiO2 substrate. We make use of the fact that CdSe is a small-bandgap material compared with CdS; therefore, in a common CdSe/CdS core/shell QD, the photo-excited electron is confined deeply in the CdSe core. By special construction of the CdS/CdSe core/shell QDs, referred as reversed type-I, the electron wave function will distribute largely in the shell region. This facilitates the transfer of the electron from the QD to the TiO2 substrate, resulting in significantly improved electron-injection efficiency. Such an enhanced electron-injection efficiency was confirmed by fluorescence lifetime decay measurements, showing the largest lifetime reduction after that the QDs were adsorbed on the TiO2 surface. The reversed type-I CdS/CdSe QDs show a much higher photon-to-current conversion efficiency than type-I CdSe/CdS and CdSe QDs without shell. Furthermore, by chemical-bath depositing of CdS on the QD-sensitized electrode to form a quantum-well structure, the electron recombination between the QDs and the redox couple was reduced, hence further enhancing the electron-injection efficiency. The absorbed-photon-to-current efficiency of the quantum well CdS/CdSe/CdS sensitized solar cells reaches a value as high as 60%.
Direct evidence of photo-ionization causing luminescence "off" state in CdTe Quantum dots

Abstract:We present a direct experimental evidence of photo-ionized CdTe quantum dot core having luminescence "off" state at band-edge photo-excitation. We use the autocorrelation of fluorescence fluctuations from dilute colloidal solution of CdTe quantum dots in a diffraction limited detection volume to determine their photo-ionization probability. The ionization probability is in the same order of magnitude (\approx10-6) as the CdSe and CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots. Further, we measured the ionization/ neutralization rates (\approx104 s-1) after addition of {\beta}-mercaptanol and found that ionization rate is enhanced by two orders of magnitude after the addition. However, a comparable neutralization rate enhances the light emission quantum yield. The ionization/ neutralization at microsecond time scales puts an upper limit on achieving better quantum yield by thiol addition. The results also indicate that the dominant ionization mechanism at band-edge excitation is tunneling.

Abstract:Electroluminescent (EL) devices with an ITO/ZnS/CdSe/ZnS/Al structure were fabricated using chemically synthesized colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) as active layer. The size of the CdSe QDs is about 4.3 nm measured by a transmission electron microscope. Scanning electron microscope characterization shows smooth surfaces of ZnS layers and Al electrodes. CdSe (111) and ZnS (111) diffraction peaks are observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns, verifying the incorporation of CdSe QDs and ZnS insulator materials in the devices. Room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra reveal that the CdSe QDs' emission peak is located at 614 rim. EL measurements at room temperature show a broad emission band ranging from 450 nm to 850 nm with a peak wavelength located at about 800 nm. Finally, the light emitting mechanism for the EL devices is proposed and the discrepancy between PL and EL spectra is interpreted.
Giant Up-Conversion Efficiency of InGaAs Quantum Dots in a Planar Microcavity.

Abstract:Self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) were fabricated inside a planar microcavity with two vertical cavity modes. This allowed us to excite the QDs coupled to one of the vertical cavity modes through two propagating cavity modes to study their down- and up-converted photoluminescence (PL). The up-converted PL increased continuously with the increasing temperature, reaching an intensity level comparable to that of the down-converted PL at ~120 K. This giant efficiency in the up-converted PL of InGaAs QDs was enhanced by about 2 orders of magnitude with respect to a similar structure without cavity. We tentatively explain the enhanced up-converted signal as a direct consequence of the modified spontaneous emission properties of the QDs in the microcavity, combined with the phonon absorption and emission effects.

Abstract:In this work, the fundamental mechanism of ultrabright fluorescence from surface-modified colloidal silicon quantum dots is investigated in depth using ultrafast spectroscopy. The underlying energy band structure corresponding to such highly efficient direct bandgap-like emissions in our surface-modified silicon quantum dots is unraveled by analyzing the transient optical spectrum, which demonstrates the significant effect of surface molecular engineering. It is observed that special surface modification, which creates novel surface states, is responsible for the different emission wavelengths and the significant improvement in the photoluminescence quantum yields. Following this essential understanding, surface-modified silicon quantum dots with deep blue to orange emission are successfully prepared without changing their sizes.

Abstract:We report a new and low cost method to synthesize colloidal CdSe and coated CdSe/CuSe nanocrystals in aqueous solution. The results of structural characterization and optical measurements indicated that the good size control had been achieved. The photoluminescence study confirmed the surface passivation of CdSe core with CuSe outlayer and revealed strong enhancement of band-edge luminescence due to the quantum confinement in coated CdSe/CuSe nanocrystals.

Abstract:In this paper, we first elaborate on the effects of surface plasmon (SP) coupling on the modulation responses of the emission of a light-emitting diode (LED) and its down-converted lights through colloidal quantum dots (QDs). The results of our past efforts for this subject are briefly discussed. The discussions lay the foundation for the presentation of the new experimental data of such down-converted lights in this paper. In particular, the enhancement of the modulation bandwidth (MB) of a QD-based converted light through SP coupling is demonstrated. By linking green-emitting QDs (GQDs) and/or red-emitting QDs (RQDs) with synthesized Ag nano-plates via surface modifications and placing them on a blue-emitting LED, the MBs of the converted green and red emissions are significantly increased through the induced SP coupling of the Ag nano-plates. When both GQD and RQD exist and are closely spaced in a sample, the energy transfer processes of emission-reabsorption and Förster resonance energy transfer from GQD into RQD occur, leading to the increase (decrease) in the MB of green (red) light. With SP coupling, the MB of a mixed light is significantly enhanced.

Abstract:The authors report a type of photoluminescence upconversion that is directly attributable to the strong quantum confinement of charge carriers in PbS nanocrystals and does not involve the usual mechanism of thermally populated intermediate states. Absorption, emission, and excitation spectroscopy, combined with a simple spectral model, reveals that the upconversion process is consistent with single-photon absorption by an extremely broad single nanocrystal absorption line. This type of upconversion is a result of the time-energy uncertainty principle, indicating unusually rapid dephasing in this system, and stands in direct contrast to the mechanisms proposed for upconversion in other types of nanocrystal.
