Abstract:According to the scenarios of fewer nodes with less mobility, a practical approach to Ad hoc based on Bluetooth is proposed, including the design of network routing, application framework and a distributed path discovery algorithm which is easily implemented in L2CAP (logical link control and adaptation protocol) layer of Bluetooth. In order to verify and test the approach, an experimental system is implemented. Combining with the test data, performances of Ad hoc based on Bluetooth is theoretically derived and comparatively analyzed in detail, including the analysis of linking time, bandwidth and average delay. It is concluded that this approach to Ad hoc based on Bluetooth is fit for multi-hop communication and text, voice and video communication can be well supported.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) interconnects massive cyber-physical devices (CPD) to provide various applications, such as smart home and smart building. Bluetooth Mesh is an emerging networking technology, which can be used to organize a massive network with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices. Managed-flooding protocol is used in Bluetooth Mesh to route the data packets. Although it is a highly desirable option when data transmission is urgent, it is inefficient in a larger and denser mesh network due to the collisions of broadcast data packets. In this paper, we introduce ACE: a Routing Algorithm based on Autonomous Channel Scheduling for Bluetooth Mesh Network. ACE relies on the existing Bluetooth Mesh messages to distribute routes without additional traffic overhead and conducts a beacon-aware routing update adaptively as the topology evolves. In ACE, BLE channel resources can be efficiently utilized by a channel scheduling scheme for each node locally and autonomously without any neighborly negotiation. We implement ACE on the nRF52840 from Nordic Semiconductor and evaluate its effectiveness on our testbed. Compared to the Bluetooth Mesh, our experiments proved that ACE could reduce the end-to-end latency by 16%, alleviate packets collisions issues, and increase the packet delivery ratio (PDR) by 30% under heavy traffic. Moreover, simulation results verified that ACE has better scalability when the size and density of networks become larger and denser.

Abstract:Bluetooth is a promising local area wireless technology designed to establish both personal area and multihop ad hoc networks. In this paper, we present BluePower as a novel and practical distributed scheme for building large multihop scatternets based on device transmitting power. The protocol is executed at each node with no prior knowledge of network topology and constructs the topology simply by enabling each node to alternate between scatternet formation and communication. Different from existing solutions, our design integrates device mobility and network self-healing from partitions with topology formation. Besides, partial loop detection is applied to minimize the redundant links in the network. The simulation results show that BluePower has low scatternet formation latency, decent number of slaves per piconet, short average route length and small connection delay for nodes to establish the first communication links in dynamic environments.

Abstract:Traditionally, Bluetooth has been deemed unsuitable for sustaining a large-scale multi-hop network. There are two main reasons: severe frequency channel collisions under a large-scale network and high complexity of designing an efficient formation protocol. In this work, we reconsider this viewpoint from a practical usability perspective and aim to realize the buried potential of Bluetooth. Firstly, we find that the collision probability under a low-overhead network is fairly small, which is acceptable for practical applications. Secondly, we propose BlueSky, a complete system solution to provide necessary networking functionalities for Bluetooth. In BlueSky, we develop a connection maintenance mechanism for mitigating the influence of collisions and a network formation protocol for reliable packet transmissions. We implement BlueSky on Windows Mobile using 100 commercial smartphones. Comprehensive usability evaluations demonstrate the negligible overheads of BlueSky and its good network performance. In particular, 90%-95% of the whole 100 nodes can participate in the communication smoothly.

Abstract:Bluetooth which operates in the 2.4GHz ISM band provides short range, low cost, low power pico-cellular wireless connectivity. It intends to become the Wireless Personal Area Network standard itself. The Bluetooth specification proposes a Round Robin scheduler as possible solution for scheduling slaves in a Bluetooth Piconet. However, this basic scheme performs badly under asymmetric traffic conditions. Recently, several polling schemes have been proposed to improve performance on asymmetric transmissions and to enhance the performance of real-time traffic. In this paper, we present a new polling algorithm for Bluetooth Piconet that supports both delay and bandwidth guarantees and aims to remain fair and efficient with asymmetric flow rates. We present an extensive set of simulations and provide performance comparisons with Round Robin. And the results show that the performance of our algorithm can be better than that of the Round Robin. In addition, our modification does not introduce any control overhead. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:Abstract--This paper addresses the problem of localized scatternet formation for multihop Bluetooth-based personal area ad hoc networks. Nodes are assumed to know their positions and are able to establish connections with any of their neighboring nodes, located within their transmission radius, in the neighbor discovery phase. The next phase of the proposed formation algorithm is optional and can be applied to construct a sparse geometric structure in a localized manner. We propose here a new sparse planar structure, namely, partial Delaunay triangulation (PDT), which can be constructed locally and is denser than other known localized planar structures. In the next mandatory phase, the degree of each node is limited to seven by applying the Yao structure, and the master-slave relations in piconets are formed in created subgraphs. This phase consists of several iterations. In each iteration, undecided nodes with higher keys than any of their undecided neighbors apply the Yao structure to bound the degrees, decide master-slave relations on the remaining edges, and inform all neighbors about either deleting edges or master-slave decisions. To the best of our knowledge, our schemes are the first schemes that construct degree limited (a node has at most seven slaves) and connected piconets in multihop networks, without parking any node. The creation and maintenance require small overhead in addition to maintaining accurate location information for one-hop neighbors. The experiments confirm good functionality of created Bluetooth networks in addition to their fast creation and straightforward maintenance.
Priority-based adaptive frequency hopping for Bluetooth in multi-piconet environments

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) scheme, Priority-based AFH (PAFH), for Bluetooth by introducing traffic prioritization to provide better QoS for the traffic of high priority in multi-piconet environments, especially under severe self-interference. To provide differentiated QoS, PAFH pre-classifies the whole band into non-overlapping sub hopsets that correspond to traffics of different priorities. Once the PER is higher than a predetermined threshold, the algorithm is triggered and the piconet shrinks its hopset to the corresponding sub hopset according to the traffic priority. In case of the congested condition after reducing the hopset, the piconets with a higher priority monitor their own PER periodically and have the privilege to employ a hopset restoration mechanism. Based on the PER before and after the adjustment, these piconets can change their hopsets adaptively between the sub hopset and the complete one by applying a greedy algorithm. Further, the operation of PAFH is distributed and is totally compatible with the existing specifications. Simulation results show that PAFH significantly outperforms conventional schemes.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of scatternet formation for single-hop Bluetooth-based wireless ad hoc networks, with minimal communication overhead. We adopt the well-known structure de Bruijn graph to form the backbone of Bluetooth scatternet, hereafter called dBBlue, such that every master node has at most seven slaves, every slave node is in at most two piconets, and no node assumes both master and slave roles. Our structure dBBlue also enjoys a nice routing property: the diameter of the graph is O(logn) and we can find a path with at most O(logn) hops for every pair of nodes without any routing table, where n is the total number of nodes in the network. Moreover, the network congestion is at most O(logn/n), assuming that a unit of total traffic demand is equally distributed among all pair of nodes. We discuss in detail a vigorous method to locally update the structure dBBlue using at most O(logn) communications when a node joins or leaves the network. In most cases, the cost of updating the scatternet is actually O(1) since a node can join or leave without affecting the remaining scatternet. The number of affected nodes is always bounded from above by a constant when a node joins or leaves the network. The dBBlue scatternet can be constructed incrementally when the nodes join the network one by one. To facilitate the self-routing and easy updating, a scalable MAC assignment mechanism is designed to guarantee the packet delivery even during scatternet updating. In addition, the structure formed by our method can sustain the faults of 2 nodes and the network is still guaranteed to be connected. If a node detects a fault of some neighboring master node or bridge slave node, it can dynamically re-route the packets and the path traveled by the packet is still at most O(logn) hops. Previously no method can guarantee all these properties although some methods can achieve some of the properties.

Abstract:In case that user can avoid the disturbing of cabling, and call services at anywhere anytime,we explores to network home appliances around the HNP by Bluetooth technology.The Bluetooth SDP(Service Discovery Protocol) according to SIG specification, is designed for motion enviroment, and has no definition of carrying out service calling. On account of characteristics of home network, we design a system in which the Bluetooth SDP is expanded to include service register and service announcement function. In order to make the system have more compatibility we explore a mechanism to call the registered services by SOAP and BT-SDP architecture based on XML.

Abstract:According to the latest Bluetooth specifications, the communications between slave devices within a piconet are controlled by the master node in which the master device must participate in all the information exchange activities. Consequently, how to design a polling scheme which can obviously reduce average packet delay and improve bandwidth utilization is an important issue. In this paper, we propose a traffic history based Dynamic Priority Round Robin (DPRR) polling scheme to improve the efficiency of Bluetooth piconet. As expected, the simulation results show that the proposed polling scheme can achieve a low packet delay and high bandwidth utilization.
An Overview of Bluetooth Technology and its Communication Applications

Abstract:Bluetooth is a new RF short-range wireless technology which is designed for wireless communication between different devices. There is increase in popularity of Bluetooth technology and is being accepted in today’s world. There are organizations which are doing research on Bluetooth technology, but very few of their research analysis provide a balanced view of the technology, describing its implications for businesses, pros and cons. In this paper analysis have been done keeping in mind various perspectives of the Bluetooth technology. The analysis starts with a description of the technology in terms of its network infrastructure, hardware and software. Then it is continued by the Error corrections and retransmission. The analysis is done on macro analytical view including the business implications, advantages of this technology, its role in the global third generation (3G) wireless schemes. The finally it concludes with the applications and future potentials of Bluetooth.

Abstract:In order to satisfy the demand of future Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) with high mobility, high data rate and low cost, Tsinghua University proposes a novel BWA system named BRadio with independent intellectual property rights. This paper describes the BRadio system from the aspects of physical layer technologies, Medium Access Control (MAC), networking methods, and services. The physical layer technologies focus on Time domain and Frequency domain United Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (TFU-OFDMA), Time domain and Frequency domain United Single Carrier Modulation time division multiple Access (TFU-SCMA), Interleave Division Multiple Access (IDMA), and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO). In MAC layer we describe several new functionalities in BRadio system. The networking methods of BRadio are divided into networking independently and networking with the existing networks. BRadio can support various services, among which, the Personal Media Service (PMS) is presented in detail. Relying on the technical superiority of its high data rate, high mobility and low cost, as well as its flexible networking and comprehensive service platform, BRadio has become a potential technical solution for BWA.

Abstract:Bluetooth is developed for short range communication. Bluetooth Devices are normally having low power and low cost. This is a wireless communication technology designed to connect phones, laptops and PDAs. The greater availability of portable devices with Bluetooth connectivity imposes wireless connection between enabled devices. On an average the range of Bluetooth devices is about 10 meters. The basic limitation of the Bluetooth communication is this range limitation. In this paper I have studied the limitations of Bluetooth communication and consider range constraint as the major limitation. I propose a new expanded Blue tooth network to overcome the range constraint of Bluetooth device. This creates a network of Bluetooth enabled devices that will include laptops, set top devices and also mobile phones. The main purpose of this proposal is to establish a network will enable the users to communicate outside the range without any range constraint.

Abstract:Enabling both cellular phone service and ad hoc communication with a single terminal will make personal communication more convenient. This can be achieved by using a compatible air interface in the two modes. In this paper, we propose a new approach of ad hoc networking based on a modified air interface of TD-SCDMA, which is the 3G mobile communication standard proposed by China. The same frame structure as TD-SCDMA is used while appropriate modifications are made to the air interface. We present a scheme of radio resource management optimized for ad hoc networks, which can resolve multihop collisions, is adaptable to topology changes and is efficient for connection creation and release. Analytical results show that good performance can be achieved.

Abstract:Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is a newly emerged technology targeting at low-power, low-cost wireless communications within medium or short range. Since BLE is well designed in favor of Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) or Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs), fast network access has been considered an important issue for users. This paper studies the performance about BLE device discovery particularly with multiple devices. An analytical model is developed, based on classical ALOHA analysis, in consideration of three advertising channels of BLE. In addition, an enhanced mechanism is proposed enabling BLE scanner/initiator to learn the network contention and adjust parameters accordingly, so as to achieve lower latency. Through extensive simulations, the model has been validated highly accurate, and the proposed mechanism has shown its effectiveness in reducing unexpected long latency in crowd BLE networks.
