Abstract:Summary form only given. The uniqueness of the high-resolution electroencephalogram (HREEG), which enhances the poor spatial resolution of the scalp EEG recording, has been investigated from the theoretical viewpoint. It is proved that because the region bounded by the scalp and the cortex is passive, the cortical potential is unique in a realistic, homogeneous head model when the potential is known on a continuous set of points on the scalp. However, since only the potential at finite electrodes rather than a continuous set of points on the scalp can be measured, many different potential distributions on the cortex can create the same map. Result suggests that if HREEG starts from a continuous scalp map, which is obtained by interpolation of the data between electrodes, the estimated cortex potential is unique.
