Abstract:A recent theory provides a unified cross-linguistic analysis of the interpretations that are assigned to expressions for disjunction, Negative Polarity Items, Free Choice Items, and the non-interrogative uses of wh-phrases in languages such as Mandarin Chinese. If this approach is on the right track, children should be expected to demonstrate similar patterns in the acquisition of these linguistic expressions. Previous research has found that, by age four, children have acquired the knowledge that both the existential indefinite renhe "any" and wh-words in Mandarin Chinese are interpreted as Negative Polarity Items when they are bound by downward entailing operators, but the same expressions are interpreted as Free Choice Items (with a conjunctive interpretation) when they are bound by deontic modals (Mandarin keyi) or by the Mandarin adverbial quantifier dou "all". The present study extends this line of research to the Mandarin disjunction word huozhe. A Truth Value Judgment Task was used to investigate the possibility that disjunction phrases that are bound by the adverbial quantifier dou generate a conjunctive interpretation in the grammars of Mandarin-speaking 4-year-old children. The findings confirmed this prediction. We discuss the implications of the findings for linguistic theory and for language learnability.

Abstract:1 Quantiiers as Modal Operators 1.1 Motivations The semantics for quantiiers described in this paper can be viewed both as a new semantics for generalized quantiiers and as a new look at standard rst-order quantiication, bringing the latter closer to modal logic. The standard semantics for generalized quantiiers interprets a monadic generalized quantiier Q as a set of subsets of a domain. For example, the quantiier "there are precisely two" is interpreted by the set of all subsets of the domain which contain precisely two elements. A formula Qx' is true in a model if the set of elements satisfying ' belongs to the interpretation of the quantiier; in our example, if there are precisely two elements satisfying '. The existential quantiier can be treated as a generalized quantiier, too: it is interpreted as the set of all non-empty subsets of the domain. The universal quantiier is interpreted by the singleton set containing the whole domain. The quantiiers listed so far are rst-order deenable in the following sense: they can be deened using ordinary quantiiers and equality. Many interesting generalized quanti-ers are not rst-order deenable. The present study is motivated by the work of Michiel van Lambalgen (1991) on Gentzen-style proof theory for the quantiiers "for many" (its dual is interpreted as a non-principal lter), "for uncountably many" and "for almost all" (the latter contains all subsets of the domain which have Lebesgue measure 1). All those quantiiers are not rst-order deenable. They have Hilbert-style axiomatizations, but until lately no one believed that they can have a reasonable Gentzen-style proof theory. In order to devise such a proof theory, van Lambalgen used a translation of generalized quan-tiier formulas into a rst-order language enriched with a predicate R of indeenite arity. Abstract:This paper investigates the possibility of performing automated reasoning in probabilistic logic when probabilities are expressed by means of linguistic quantifiers. Each linguistic term is expressed as a prescribed interval of proportions. Then instead of propagating numbers, qualitative terms are propagated in accordance with the numerical interpretation of these terms. The quantified syllogism, modelling the chaining of probabilistic rules, is studied in this context. It is shown that a qualitative counterpart of this syllogism makes sense, and is relatively independent of the threshold defining the linguistically meaningful intervals, provided that these threshold values remain in accordance with the intuition. The inference power is less than that of a full-fledged probabilistic con-quaint propagation device but better corresponds to what could be thought of as commonsense probabilistic reasoning.

Abstract:Since quantifiers have the ability of summarizing the properties of a class of objects without enumerating them, linguistic quantification is a very important topic in the field of high level knowledge representation and reasoning. This paper introduces a new framework for modeling quantifiers in natural languages in which each linguistic quantifier is represented by a family of fuzzy measures, and the truth value of a quantified proposition is evaluated by using Sugeno's integral. This framework allows us to have some elegant logical properties of linguistic quantifiers. We compare carefully our new model of quantification and other approaches to linguistic quantifiers. A set of criteria for linguistic quantification was proposed in the previous literature. The relationship between these criteria and the results obtained in the present paper is clarified. Some simple applications of the Sugeno's integral semantics of quantifiers are presented.

Abstract:We explore a kind of first-order predicate logic with intended semantics in the reals. Compared to other approaches in the literature, we work predominantly in the multiplicative reals $[0,\infty]$, showing they support three generations of connectives, that we call non-linear, linear additive, and linear multiplicative. Means and harmonic means emerge as natural candidates for bounded existential and universal quantifiers, and in fact we see they behave as expected in relation to the other logical connectives. We explain this fact through the well-known fact that min/max and arithmetic mean/harmonic mean sit at opposite ends of a spectrum, that of p-means. We give syntax and semantics for this quantitative predicate logic, and as example applications, we show how softmax is the quantitative semantics of argmax, and Rényi entropy/Hill numbers are additive/multiplicative semantics of the same formula. Indeed, the additive reals also fit into the story by exploiting the Napierian duality $-\log \dashv 1/\exp$, which highlights a formal distinction between 'additive' and 'multiplicative' quantities. Finally, we describe two attempts at a categorical semantics via enriched hyperdoctrines. We discuss why hyperdoctrines are in fact probably inadequate for this kind of logic.

Abstract:This paper surveys the common approach to quantification and generalised quantification in formal linguistics and philosophy of language. We point out how this general setting departs from empirical linguistic data, and give some hints for a different view based on proof theory, which on many aspects gets closer to the language itself. We stress the importance of Hilbert's oper- ator epsilon and tau for, respectively, existential and universal quantifications. Indeed, these operators help a lot to construct semantic representation close to natural language, in particular with quantified noun phrases as individual terms. We also define guidelines for the design of the proof rules corresponding to generalised quantifiers.

Abstract:In this thesis we present a semantic representation formalism based on directed graphs and explore its linguistic adequacy and explanatory benefits in the semantics of plurality and quantification. Our graph language covers the essentials of natural language semantics using only monadic second-order variables. We define its model-theoretical interpretation in terms of graph traversal, where the relative scope of variables arises from their order of valuation. We present a unification-based mechanism for constructing semantic graphs at a simple syntax-semantics interface, where syntax as a partition function on discourse referents is implemented with categorial grammars by establishing a partly deterministic relation between semantics and syntactic distribution. This mechanism is automated to facilitate future exploration. The present graph formalism is applied to linguistic issues in distributive predication, cross-categorial conjunction, and scope permutation of quantificational expressions, including the exceptional scoping behaviors of indefinites.

Abstract:We introduce a corpus of short texts in Mandarin, in which quantified expressions figure prominently. We illustrate the significance of the corpus by examining the hypothesis (known as Huang's "coolness" hypothesis) that speakers of East Asian Languages tend to speak more briefly but less informatively than, for example, speakers of West-European languages. The corpus results from an elicitation experiment in which participants were asked to describe abstract visual scenes. We compare the resulting corpus, called MQTUNA, with an English corpus that was collected using the same experimental paradigm. The comparison reveals that some, though not all, aspects of quantifier use support the above-mentioned hypothesis. Implications of these findings for the generation of quantified noun phrases are discussed.

Abstract:In a mathematical perspective, neighborhood models for modal logic are generalized quantifiers, parametrized to points in the domain of objects/worlds. We explore this analogy further, connecting generalized quantifier theory and modal neighborhood logic. In particular, we find interesting analogies between conservativity for linguistic quantifiers and the locality of modal logic, and between the role of invariances in both fields. Moreover, we present some new completeness results for modal neighborhood logics of linguistically motivated classes of generalized quantifiers, and raise new types of open problem. With the bridges established here, many further analogies might be explored between the two fields to mutual benefit.
Some General Completeness Results for Propositionally Quantified Modal Logics

Abstract:We study the completeness problem for propositionally quantified modal logics on quantifiable general frames, where the admissible sets are the propositions the quantifiers can range over and expressible sets of worlds are admissible, and Kripke frames, where the quantifiers range over all sets of worlds. We show that any normal propositionally quantified modal logic containing all instances of the Barcan scheme is strongly complete with respect to the class of quantifiable general frames validating it. We also provide a sufficient condition for the truth of all formulas, possibly with quantifiers, to be preserved under passing from a quantifiable general frame to its underlying Kripke frame. This is reminiscent of both the idea of elementary submodel in model theory and the persistence concepts in propositional modal logic. The key to this condition is the concept of finite diversity (Fritz 2023), and with it, we show that if $\Theta$ is a set of Sahlqvist formulas whose class of Kripke frames has finite diversity, then the smallest normal propositionally quantified modal logic containing $\Theta$, Barcan, a formula stating the existence of world propositions, and a formula stating the definability of successor sets, is Kripke complete. As a special case, we have a simple finite axiomatization of the logic of Euclidean Kripke frames.

Abstract:Most fuzzy systems including fuzzy decision support and fuzzy control systems provide out-puts in the form of fuzzy sets that represent the inferred conclusions. Linguistic interpretation of such outputs often involves the use of linguistic approximation that assigns a linguistic label to a fuzzy set based on the predefined primary terms, linguistic modifiers and linguistic connectives. More generally, linguistic approximation can be formalized in the terms of the re-translation rules that correspond to the translation rules in ex-plicitation (e.g. simple, modifier, composite, quantification and qualification rules) in com-puting with words [Zadeh 1996]. However most existing methods of linguistic approximation use the simple, modifier and composite re-translation rules only. Although these methods can provide a sufficient approximation of simple fuzzy sets the approximation of more complex ones that are typical in many practical applications of fuzzy systems may be less satisfactory. Therefore the question arises why not use in linguistic ap-proximation also other re-translation rules corre-sponding to the translation rules in explicitation to advantage. In particular linguistic quantifica-tion may be desirable in situations where the conclusions interpreted as quantified linguistic propositions can be more informative and natu-ral. This paper presents some aspects of linguis-tic approximation in the context of the re-translation rules and proposes an approach to linguistic approximation with the use of quantifi-cation rules, i.e. quantified linguistic approxima-tion. Two methods of the quantified linguistic approximation are considered with the use of lin-guistic quantifiers based on the concepts of the non-fuzzy and fuzzy cardinalities of fuzzy sets. A number of examples are provided to illustrate the proposed approach.

Abstract:Quantitative linguistics concerns itself with the various language phenomena,language structures,structural properties,and their interrelations in real-life communicative activities.Through various quantitative techniques,it conducts accurate measurement,observation,simulation,modeling and explanation of these phenomena in order to discover the mathematical laws underlying the language phenomena,reveal the intrinsic reasons for these phenomena,and explore the self-adaptive mechanisms of the language system and the dynamics of language evolution.Quantitative linguistics is a typical combination of natural and social sciences,with distinct interdisciplinary characteristics.These characteristics distinguish quantitative linguistics as the branch of linguistics with the best adherence to the paradigm of modern science.The language laws it discovers contribute to more accurate description and explanation of relevant language phenomena and are vitally important and necessary for the establishment of a type of linguistic theory in the modern scientific sense.As an empirical discipline based on authentic language data,the mode of thinking and research methodology practiced in quantitative linguistics are generally in line with those in other empirical disciplines.The most representative accomplishments of quantitative linguistics are the various language laws concerning the structure and evolution of human languages,which constitute the basis of relevant theories.Synergetic linguistics,an outcome of the application of synergetics to linguistic studies,marks a more advanced stage of the development of quantitative linguistics.Under the theoretical framework of synergetic linguistics,we can integrate the separated language laws into a linguistic theory with greater explanatory capacity.An attempt to solve the equilibrium between various language-related demands in communication,synergetic linguistics is the instantiation and modernization of Zipf's least effort principle.In the foreseeable future,researchers in quantitative linguistics around the world are expected to conduct in-depth studies along the following lines of research:(1)the mechanisms and laws governing how words form sentences;(2)the search for more universal syntactic formalisms for the sake of cross-linguistic verification of various syntactic rules;(3)the synergetic relations between different levels of human languages,with focus placed on syntax;(4)the application of various new methods to more efficient and systematic exploration of the rules governing the structure and evolution of human languages;(5)attempts at applying quantitative facts of syntax to syntactic analysis based on authentic language data;(6)the relationships between quantitative facts of syntax and cognitive processing of sentences;(7)the search for synergetic linguistic models more compatible with empirical facts of cognitive processing of language;(8)the construction of more explanatorily adequate lexical-syntactic synergetic models;and so forth.These issues not only reflect the gaps in the current body of quantitative linguistic research but also indicate possible directions for future research.
Probing the Quantitative-Qualitative Divide in Probabilistic Reasoning

Abstract:This paper explores the space of (propositional) probabilistic logical languages, ranging from a purely `qualitative' comparative language to a highly `quantitative' language involving arbitrary polynomials over probability terms. While talk of qualitative vs. quantitative may be suggestive, we identify a robust and meaningful boundary in the space by distinguishing systems that encode (at most) additive reasoning from those that encode additive and multiplicative reasoning. The latter includes not only languages with explicit multiplication but also languages expressing notions of dependence and conditionality. We show that the distinction tracks a divide in computational complexity: additive systems remain complete for $\mathsf{NP}$, while multiplicative systems are robustly complete for $\exists\mathbb{R}$. We also address axiomatic questions, offering several new completeness results as well as a proof of non-finite-axiomatizability for comparative probability. Repercussions of our results for conceptual and empirical questions are addressed, and open problems are discussed.

Quantifiers closed under partial polymorphisms

Abstract:We study Lindstrom quantifiers that satisfy certain closure properties which are motivated by the study of polymorphisms in the context of constraint satisfaction problems (CSP). When the algebra of polymorphisms of a finite structure B satisfies certain equations, this gives rise to a natural closure condition on the class of structures that map homomorphically to B. The collection of quantifiers that satisfy closure conditions arising from a fixed set of equations are rather more general than those arising as CSP. For any such conditions P, we define a pebble game that delimits the distinguishing power of the infinitary logic with all quantifiers that are P-closed. We use the pebble game to show that the problem of deciding whether a system of linear equations is solvable in Z2 is not expressible in the infinitary logic with all quantifiers closed under a near-unanimity condition.

Propositional Logics for the Lawvere Quantale

Abstract:Lawvere showed that generalised metric spaces are categories enriched over $[0, \infty]$, the quantale of the positive extended reals. The statement of enrichment is a quantitative analogue of being a preorder. Towards seeking a logic for quantitative metric reasoning, we investigate three $[0,\infty]$-valued propositional logics over the Lawvere quantale. The basic logical connectives shared by all three logics are those that can be interpreted in any quantale, viz finite conjunctions and disjunctions, tensor (addition for the Lawvere quantale) and linear implication (here a truncated subtraction); to these we add, in turn, the constant $1$ to express integer values, and scalar multiplication by a non-negative real to express general affine combinations. Quantitative equational logic can be interpreted in the third logic if we allow inference systems instead of axiomatic systems. For each of these logics we develop a natural deduction system which we prove to be decidably complete w.r.t. the quantale-valued semantics. The heart of the completeness proof makes use of the Motzkin transposition theorem. Consistency is also decidable; the proof makes use of Fourier-Motzkin elimination of linear inequalities. Strong completeness does not hold in general, even (as is known) for theories over finitely-many propositional variables; indeed even an approximate form of strong completeness in the sense of Pavelka or Ben Yaacov -- provability up to arbitrary precision -- does not hold. However, we can show it for theories axiomatized by a (not necessarily finite) set of judgements in normal form over a finite set of propositional variables when we restrict to models that do not map variables to $\infty$; the proof uses Hurwicz's general form of the Farkas' Lemma.

Abstract:Generalised quantifiers, which include Henkin's branching quantifiers, have been introduced by Mostowski and Lindström and developed as a substantial topic application of logic, especially model theory, to linguistics with work by Barwise, Cooper, Keenan. In this paper, we mainly study the proof theory of some non-standard quantifiers as second order formulae . Our first example is the usual pair of first order quantifiers (for all / there exists) when individuals are viewed as individual concepts handled by second order deductive rules. Our second example is the study of a second order translation of the simplest branching quantifier: ``A member of each team and a member of each board of directors know each other", for which we propose a second order treatment.
