Abstract:In this article, longitudinal wave (P-wave) band structures of functionally graded viscoelastic phononic crystals (PnCs) with exponential distribution properties are analytically investigated via an exact method. Differing from the laminated model, displacement and stress vectors of normal incident P-wave are obtained exactly by utilizing a stress-transform technique and the state space method. According to the continuous condition and Bloch theory, the eigenvalue equation of band structure is derived by applying transfer matrix method. The storage modulus is considered to be frequency-dependent while the loss modulus is neglected for the consideration of components viscoelasticity. Dispersion curves, obtained from the calculation of eigenvalue equation, are validated by the results of exist laminated model and transmission spectra which are also present to reveal the propagation characteristic of normal incident P-wave. Numerical examples indicate that band width and center frequencies of band gaps can be effectively altered by changing magnitude of exponential function, ratio between initial modulus and final modulus. Other new band gaps are opened as well as wider band width are achieved with the increase of gradient index & kcy;. The exact analytical solution presented in this paper can be the benchmark for those approximation solutions.
Design of Large-Deflection-angle High-Diffraction-efficiency High-Dispersion Hybrid Gratings

Abstract:Gratings are key components in many optical systems such as spectrometers. Improving their dispersion is very important for their applications, but improving the single-order diffraction efficiency of an ultrahigh dispersion grating is still very challenging. Here, we propose an analytical approach for the design of a new type of grating named hybrid grating, which consists of a subwavelength grating and a non-subwavelength grating. The proposed analytical approach is based on a physical model in which the non-subwavelength grating acts as an ultrathin reflection grating and the subwavelength grating acts as an antireflection coating. Using the rigorous coupled-wave analysis and the finite-difference time-domain method, we numerically demonstrate that multiple hybrid gratings designed at different wavelengths using the proposed analytical approach show a diffraction efficiency of greater than 95 % in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light, an angular dispersion of greater than 0.8 mrad/nm and a deflection angle of greater than 80 degrees. Furthermore, we numerically demonstrate that by using a combined approach to optimize the parameters of a hybrid grating, the diffraction efficiency in the -1st diffraction order for TE-polarized light can be increased to more than 97 % under the condition that the angular dispersion and the deflection angle of the hybrid grating remain unchanged. Our work provides an avenue for rapid design of gratings with high angular dispersion, large deflection angle and high diffraction efficiency.

Abstract:The properties of binary blazed grating were theoretically analyzed with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The diffraction efficiencies and diffraction angles of -1, 0, and +1 order for the grating varying with wavelength, grating structure, and the etch depth were studied when the incident angle was 30 degrees. The numerical simulations revealed that the binary blazed grating presented high stability of diffraction efficiencies with wavelength shift.

Abstract:The mode-splitting phenomenon within finite-size, mini-scale high-index-contrast gratings (HCGs) has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. The high-Q resonance splits into a series of in-plane modes due to the confinement of boundaries but can still survive even on a mini-scale footprint. Q factors up to similar to 3300 and similar to 2200 have been observed for the HCGs with footprints that are only 55 mu m x 300 mu m and 27.5 mu m x 300 mu m, which would be promising for realizing optical communication and sensing applications with compact footprint. Abstract:Gratings composed of cholesteric liquid crystals as an important optical element for emerging applications such as augmented and virtual reality and are renowned for their characteristic single reflective diffraction band. Heliconical liquid crystal is a newly discovered state where the constituent molecules self-organize into helical structures with a non-90 degrees polar angle between the director and the helical axis. Here, we present a numerical study on the reflective diffraction of gratings made of heliconical liquid crystals. Remarkably, numerical results demonstrate that there exist two diffraction bands at the same diffraction angle, with one peak wavelength being twice the other. We show that the short-wavelength diffraction originates from the Pancharatnam-Berry phase acquired by the reflected light while the long-wavelength diffraction stems from the reflection of the slanted volume grating, and that the wavelengths of these two diffraction bands can be attributed to the first and second band gaps of the slanted volume grating as a one-dimensional photonic crystal. We further show that the polarization of the reflected diffraction light is circular, exhibiting the same handedness as the liquid crystal for the short-wavelength band, whereas it is perfectly linearly polarized along the grating direction for the long-wavelength band.

Abstract:A simulation model based on the finite-element method (FEM) and transfer matrix method (TMM) is developed for analyzing mechanical long-period fiber gratings (MLPFGs). The anisotropic characteristics of the cross section of a fiber are obtained using FEM and the non-rectangular distribution of refractive index of the stressed area is accounted for to analyze band-rejection filtering characteristics using TMM, both of which are neglected in the conventional coupled-mode method (CMM). The overall attenuation in the entire spectral range is successfully simulated by the proposed method. The deviations of the transmittance at resonance wavelength between theoretical values and the actual conditions are 11.39 dB and 1.18 dB for CMM and FEM-TMM, respectively, for a high-birefringence case under a high applied force such as F = 60 N.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient simulation algorithm-Scattering matrix method for investigation of the coated finite two-dimensional electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures. The method is derived to be capable to simulate the band properties of the coated cylinder photonic crystal with wave discontinuities. Numbers of photonic crystals with waveguide discontinuities are examined. The transmission characteristics of the EBG embedded with metal, dielectric, and various coated cylinders are analyzed. The results show that the tuned bandgap properties are able to provide an additional possibility to develop a novel device.
Resonant Excitation Analysis on Asymmetrical Lateral Leakage of Light in Finite Zero-Contrast Grating Mirror

Abstract:Resonant excitation analysis on asymmetrical lateral leakage of light in the finite zero-contrast grating (ZCG) mirror is demonstrated, and the size effect of the excited source is investigated. The dispersion equation of slab waveguide for the TM mode is proposed to evaluate the resonant condition of the ZCG mirror, and it is shown that the mirror effect of the infinite ZCG is resulted from the overlapping of order-mode resonance pairs. However, two leaky channels are excited in spectra of the finite ZCG mirror for the normal-incident Gaussian source, where bound states in the continuums (BICs) turn into quasi-BICs as the angular component is nonzero. The leaky channels are confined in the grating layer and the sublayer, and they are all transferred from the symmetrical mode to the asymmetrical mode along the lateral direction from the center of the ZCG. The asymmetrical loss of the lateral leakage of light relative to incidence direction, in principle, can break reflection reciprocity of the symmetrical system of the finite ZCG mirror. By changing the excited source from the grating side to the sublayer side, the lateral leakage of light of the finite ZCG mirror can be efficiently reduced.

Abstract:Scattering matrix method is used to simulate the finite size 2D periodic structures. Coated or dielectric ring electromagnetic band gap structure is simulated and some novel properties are discussed. The numerical results show that coating layer has great impact on band gap characteristics. This provides additional freedom to tune or modify the properties of photonic crystal devices.

Abstract:Characteristics- and polarization-dependences of the transmission spectrum for a consecutively cascaded single-helix long-period fiber gratings with opposite helicities (CC-SHLPGs-OH) have been comprehensively analyzed for the first time. It has been found that the TE/TM cladding mode produced in the first single-helix long-period fiber grating (SHLPG) will largely affect the mode couplings in the later SHLPG, and as a result, a tunable flat-top band-rejection filter could be obtained once if the resonant wavelengths and the coupling strengths of the two SHLPGs are suitably selected. As a concept-proof example, measurements for a flat-top band-rejection filter have been experimentally presented. Moreover, it has been found that the proposed CC-SHLPGs-OH will exhibit a strong polarization-dependence spectrum as well as an enhanced circular dichroism (CD) especially at the vicinity of the dip wavelength. By making use of this kind of CD characteristics, one can easily produce a polarization converter which enables to turn the left-circular-polarization light to right-circular-polarization one and vice versa.

Abstract:We proposed in detail a procedure for the vectorial far-field analysis of high-contrast subwavelength gratings (HCGs) for vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs). The vectorial far-field analysis method (VFM) is based on the vectorial angular spectrum method. The transmission and reflection coefficients of the HCG are used to modulate the polarized far-field components, and the modulated far-field components are vectorially composited to obtain the final transmitted and reflected far-field distribution. The reflectance and transmittance of the HCG to a two-dimensional finite-size beam can be solved by the integral of the output beam. The near field of the transmitted and reflected beam can be solved by an inverse Fourier transform of the far-field distribution. The VFM can be effectively applied in the transmit and reflect far-field beam shaping design and polarization analysis of HCG-VCSELs. The near field reconstructed by VFM can be applied to the calculation of coupling efficiency and lens design. The results of VFM are verified by a three-dimensional finite-difference time domain based on the licensed RSoft FullWAVE tool. VFM only needs to calculate a single-period structure, and the response of HCG to various near-field distributions can be obtained by one calculation, which provides an efficient and accurate method for the design of polarized HCG-VCSELs. The VFM reveals the underlying physics of the shaping effect of subwavelength grating on polarized beams and can be easily extended to the far-field analysis of arbitrary periodical meta-surfaces.

Abstract:The analytic expression of the field distribution in the short-circuited and open-circuited grating from the theory of the Coupling of Modes. The characteristic of the field distribution has been investigated by using the given COM parameters. Some characteristic quantities related to the field distribution have been found by analyzing the analytic expression and the field distribution graph of the typical frequency, and these characteristic quantities have been related with the COM parameters by a certain analytic relation. When the field distribution of the periodical grating was obtained by using other method, the corresponding COM parameters could be obtained by fitting the field distribution containing these parameters. This method gives a tool to extract the frequency dependent COM parameters when the fields of the waves in the grating are known.

Abstract:A mode analysis is presented for the double-grating rectangular waveguide slow-wave structure (SWS) with arbitrary longitudinal displacements between the two gratings. By matching boundary conditions along the sides of the gratings, the distribution of electromagnetic field and high frequency characteristics of the SWS are studied. The simulation results show that the dispersion curve deduced from field equations is in good agreement with that simulated by software while the interaction impedance is higher than that calculated by HFSS, but lower than by CST. It also demonstrates that the longitudinal displacement between two gratings has a great effect on the first stop-band. The upper cutoff frequency of the first mode almost overlaps the lower cutoff frequency of the second mode when the displacement is set to be strictly half period, that is to say, the first stop-band disappears. To avoid the mode degeneracy and competition, the displacement is reduced to be about 0.45 times of period, so that with the interaction impedance kept unchanged, the stop-band increases about 7.9GHz, while the pass-band declines about 2.8 GHz.

Abstract:Polarization properties of chiral fiber gratings with the core enclosed by a non-circular equiwidth curve have been analyzed and examined numerically. Since the curve has multiple odd number degree of symmetries, the specific analysis is mainly based on the simplest triple-helix chiral fiber gratings and difference of properties caused by small geometric deformation. Results show that, only right-handed circularly polarized core modes couples with cladding modes. Besides, if the shape of the fiber core was closer to a circle, rather than a triangle with curved edges, both the shortest total power transfer length and the distance between the relevant resonant dips of the transmission spectrum would increase. Therefore, as a multiple-helix chiral fiber grating, it might have some potential applications, such as filters, polarizers, and sensors.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents the design and numerical simulation of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) incorporating a high-contrast grating (HCG) by using a three-dimensional (3-D) finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The polarization dependence of HCG parameters as well as HCG reflector properties are numerically studied. We investigate the resonant spectra behavior and modal properties with respect to different aperture size. Furthermore, the quality factor (Q factor) related to modal loss is calculated, and is used to explain the mode selection of the HCG-VCSELs. Based on the simulation and analysis, it is found that the designed HCG-VCSELs exhibit larger mode discrimination compared to the conventional VCSELs. Our work could provide guidelines for designing and optimizing polarization-stable, single-mode VCSELs for use in chip-scale Cs atomic clocks.</p>
