Abstract:Chip-scale integrated optical signal processors promise to support a multitude of signal processing functions with bandwidths beyond the limit of microelectronics. Previous research has made great contributions in terms of demonstrating processing functions and device building blocks. Currently, there is a significant interest in providing functional reconfigurability, to match a key advantage of programmable microelectronic processors. To advance this concept, in this work, we experimentally demonstrate a photonic integrated circuit as an optical signal processor with an unprecedented combination of two key features: reconfigurability and terahertz bandwidth. These features enable a variety of processing functions on picosecond optical pulses using a single device. In the experiment, we successfully verified clock rate multiplication, arbitrary waveform generation, discretely and continuously tunable delays, multi-path combining and bit-pattern recognition for 1.2-ps-duration optical pulses at 1550 nm. These results and selected head-to-head comparisons with commercially available devices show our device to be a flexible integrated platform for ultrahigh-bandwidth optical signal processing and point toward a wide range of applications for telecommunications and beyond.

Abstract:Ultrafast phenomena exist widely in modern scientific research. The time scale of ultrafast phenomena is mostly in the order of picosecond, femtosecond, or even attosecond. Nowadays, it is still a major challenge to study these nonrepetitive transient processes. Here, a temporal-frequency measurement based on a dispersion-managed technique has been proposed for an MoTe2-based ultrafast laser. The temporal-frequency measurement comprises a laser diode, an optical switch, a section of tunable dispersion compensation fiber, and a three-port beam splitter. Resolution of the proposed measurement can be tuned in a wide range; further, the upper and lower resolution limits are numerically simulated. The proposed measurement is expected to be applied in ultrafast pulse detection due to its application in real-time measurement of ultrafast nonrepetitive signals.

Abstract:Temporal imaging is one of the most promising all-optical signal processing techniques that enable single-shot ultrafast signal characterization in both spectral and temporal domains. However, conventional temporal imaging systems have inherent constraints such as limited record length, narrow spectral observation range and complex system configuration, which prevent their potential to be fully unleashed. In this article, we review the recent efforts in developing advanced temporal imaging systems with much enhanced performance. Their powerful applications are demonstrated by real-time single-shot characterization of Kerr soliton generation in microresonator, noise-like pulses in mode-locked fiber lasers, broadband frequency combs and the dynamic waveform in ultrafast optical tomography. In addition, potential future developments of this technique in several important directions are discussed.

Abstract:Temporal imaging is one of the important research issues of time lens. The theory of temporal imaging is investigated briefly. The experiment using electro-optic phase modulation to perform optical pulses compression is demonstrated. And the simulation and the discussion using electro-optic phase modulation and cross phase modulation to perform temporal imaging system are presented. The experimental results show that the temporal imaging system which consisits of time lens basing electro-optic phase modulation can effectively compress the optical pulses. However, the compression coefficient is restricted by the aperture of the time lens, and the resolution of the temporal imaging system is low. Further more, the simulation results and the analysis results indicate that the temporal imaging system which consists of time lens basing cross phase modulation has a bigger compression coefficient and a higher resolution. However, this temporal imaging system is difficult to realize.

Abstract:A single-frame complete spatiotemporal characteristics measurement method of ultrafast laser pulses, named Carrier Frequency Division Multiplexing Spectral Interferometry (CFDMSI), is proposed and demonstrated. Based on the idea of frequency division multiplexing, the 3D spatiotemporal field E(x,y,t) of a femtosecond laser pulse can be reconstructed from a single spectral interferogram. The implementation of CFDMSI is quite simple, just fixing a slit array at the entrance of an imaging spectrometer, then injecting the unknown pulse and the reference pulse into the imaging spectrometer at a certain cross angle. By recording and analyzing a single spectral interferogram, the unknown pulse‘s spatiotemporal field in the sampling area of the slit array can be obtained. The principle and implementation of CFDMSI are introduced, and its effectiveness is verified by a demonstration experiment.

Abstract:To reveal the fundamental aspects hidden behind various biological, chemical and physical phenomena, the capability of acquiring images with an ultrafast temporal resolution is indispensable and highly desired. The imaging frame rate of traditional CCD and CMOS imager usually only reaches sub-MHz, which is limited by the tradeoff between sensitivity and integration time1. The pump–probe scheme is widely applied in scientific imaging for its high-temporal resolution of pico-second level2. Recently, to film the events in chemical reactions, pump–probe combined with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) or X-ray schemes are proposed. They can take the snapshots with enhanced resolution to femtosecond for producing true molecular movies3. However, it is only applicable for respective events, hence, falls short of capturing non-repetitive or destructive events, which count the majority in nature. To address this problem, at present, a lot of work has been carried out. By virtue of temporal and spatial dispersion, high-speed image acquisition can be realized either with time-stretched pulses4 or with split wavebands5 for frame rates of GHz and THz, respectively. But these schemes are based on dispersive Fourier transform, which limits the their achievable frame rate to THz. With compressive sensing method, compressed ultrafast photography (CUP) achieves passive imaging with up to 100-GHz frame rate in single shot, which is also applicable for fluorescence imaging6. However, the streak camera used in CUP suffers from its poor spatial resolution and quantum efficiency.

Abstract:We review recent work on incoherent-light temporal imaging of intensity waveforms (e.g., high-speed microwave signals). In a relevant example, we create a temporal pinhole camera to demonstrate temporal magnification (stretching) of microwave waveforms modulated on incoherent light, obtaining a magnification factor of 2.86, with a resolution of ∼50 ps over a temporal aperture of ∼8 ns, totally avoiding the use of chirp-controlled pulsed lasers.

Abstract:Multimode fibers are widely explored for optical communication, imaging and sensing applications. The interference of fiber guided modes generates a speckle pattern, which has been used for high-precision spectroscopy, temperature, and strain sensing. Here we demonstrate a single-shot full-field temporal measurement technique based on a multimode fiber. The complex spatiotemporal speckle field is created by a reference pulse propagating through the fiber, and it interferes with a signal pulse. From the time-integrated interference pattern, both the amplitude and the phase of the signal are retrieved in spectral and temporal domains. The simplicity and high sensitivity of our scheme illustrate the potential of multimode fibers as versatile and multi-functional sensors.

Abstract:A wavelength division ultrafast microscopic imaging scheme is proposed and demonstrated. This scheme is based on wavelength-time-space mapping technique. And we use wavelength division to avoid temporal overlapping in optical fiber, the overlapped single frame is divided into two bands by optical filters. Thus each frame in different wavelength band can be received separately. By using this method, large dispersion fiber can be used to achieve higher resolution.

Abstract:Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a recently developed technique stitching low-resolution images in Fourier domain to realize wide-field high-resolution imaging. However, the time-consuming process of image acquisition greatly narrows its applications in dynamic imaging. We report a wavelength multiplexing strategy to speed up the acquisition process of FPM several folds. A proof-of-concept system is built to verify its feasibility. Distinguished from many current multiplexing methods in Fourier domain, we explore the potential of high-speed FPM in spectral domain. Compatible with most existing FPM methods, our strategy provides an approach to high-speed gigapixel microscopy. Several experimental results are also presented to validate the strategy.

Abstract:Optical time stretch has been employed for ultrafast optical imaging based on space-to-wavelength-to-time mapping. However, temporal overlap between two adjacent time-stretched pulses is a disadvantageous factor that limits the spatial resolution, or the frame rate has to be reduced by reducing the pulse repetition rate to avoid the temporal overlap. To increase the spatial resolution without reducing the frame rate, we propose a novel technique based on polarization-division multiplexing, using a polarization modulator to generate two polarization interleaved pulse trains. Since two adjacent optical pulses are orthogonally polarized, the spacing between two adjacent pulses for one polarization direction is doubled, and the spatial resolution is doubled by using a dispersive element with two times the dispersion. The proposed approach is experimentally evaluated. An imaging system with an increased spatial resolution is demonstrated.

Abstract:We describe a high-speed single-shot multi-frame interferometric imaging technique enabling multiple interferometric images with femtosecond exposure time over a 50 ns event window to be recorded, following a single laser-induced excitation event. The stroboscopic illumination of a framing camera is made possible through the use of a doubling cavity that produces a femtosecond pulse train that is synchronized to the gated exposure windows of the individual frames of the camera. The imaging system utilizes a Michelson interferometer to extract phase and ultimately displacement information. We demonstrate the method by monitoring laser-induced deformation and the propagation of high-amplitude acoustic waves in a silicon nitride membrane. The method is applicable to a wide range of fast irreversible phenomena such as crack branching, shock-induced material damage, cavitation, and dielectric breakdown.

Abstract:Ghost imaging allows the imaging of an object without directly seeing this object. Originally demonstrated in the spatial domain, it was recently shown that ghost imaging can be transposed into the time domain to detect ultrafast signals, even in the presence of distortion. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a temporal ghost imaging scheme which generates a 5× magnified ghost image of an ultrafast waveform. Inspired by shadow imaging in the spatial domain and building on the dispersive Fourier transform of an incoherent supercontinuum in an optical fiber, the approach overcomes the resolution limit of standard time-domain ghost imaging generally imposed by the detectors speed. The method can be scaled up to higher magnification factors using longer fiber lengths and light source with shorter duration.

Abstract:High-speed imaging of dynamic scenes is a challenging and important task in many applications. However, conventional imaging methods based on charge coupled devices or complementary metal oxide semiconductors have limitations in temporal resolution and photon sensitivity. To address this problem, we propose a novel high-speed imaging scheme that combines single-pixel imaging with single photon detection and time-correlated single photon counting. Our scheme can achieve high-speed imaging with 64 ps resolution by repeating the motion scenes and using binary outputs from single photon detectors. We demonstrate our scheme by reconstructing the switching process of a digital micro-mirror device and a liquid crystal spatial light modulator. Our scheme can be further improved to 1 ps resolution by using a more accurate time-correlated single photon counting system. Moreover, our scheme can adapt to different speed scenes by adjusting the temporal resolution and reducing the sampling time. Our high temporal resolution imaging scheme further expands the application areas of single-pixel imaging and provides solutions for scenes requiring single photon detection and higher temporal resolution, such as reproducible chemical reaction processes imaging, cellular or sub-cellular bio imaging, single-molecule imaging of rotary motors, high-speed equipment inspection, and other periodic high-speed scenes imaging.

Abstract:To meet the constant demands of high-capacity telecommunications infrastructure, data rates beyond 1 terabit per second per wavelength channel and optical multiplexing are widely applied. However, these features pose challenges for existing data acquisition and optical performance monitoring techniques because of bandwidth limitation and signal synchronization. We designed an approach that would address these limitations by optically converting the frequency limit to an unlimited time axis and combining this with a chirped coherent detection to innovatively obtain the full-field spectrum. With this approach, we demonstrated a real-time Fourier-domain optical vector oscilloscope, with a 3.4-terahertz bandwidth and a 280-femtosecond temporal resolution over a 520-picosecond record length. In addition to on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying signals (128 gigabits per second), quadrature phase-shift keying wavelength division–multiplexed signals (4 × 160 gigabits per second) are simultaneously observed. Moreover, we successfully demonstrate some high-precision measurements, which indicate them as a promising scientific and industrial tool in high-speed optical communication and ultrafast optical measurement.
