Abstract:Resonant enhancement of electromagnetic waves propagating at oblique incidence in metamaterials, with dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability linearly changing from positive to negative values, has been predicted and theoretically studied. This effect occurs for both TE and TM polarizations near the point where a refractive index changes its sign. Our model elucidates the unique features of the resonant enhancement in "positive-to-negative transition" metamaterials for a broad frequency range from microwaves to optics.

Abstract:A three-dimensionally isotropic negative permeability of a neutral alkali-metal atomic medium, in which a fine-structure magnetic dipole-allowed transition in terahertz band is pumped for population transfer (and hence incoherent gain for negative permeability can be realized), is suggested based on quantum optical approach. The effects relevant to photonic resonance and quantum coherence are involved in the present quantum optical scheme of pumped magnetic-dipole allowed transition. The incoherent-gain assisted atomic medium (with fine-structure transition involved) may have some attractive features, e. g., three-dimensionally isotropic and homogeneous negative permeability for high-gain wave amplification at terahertz frequencies. Such a gain-assisted negative-permeability medium can be a candidate of magnetically resonant materials for artificial composite metamaterials, e.g., it may serve as a substrate of lossy negative-index materials for loss compensation or as a supporting medium for high-gain amplification of a TE-mode surface plasmon-like wave.

Abstract:A hyperbolic metamaterial (MM) based on anisotropic Mie-type resonance is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated in microwave range. Based on the shape-dependent Mie-type resonance, metamaterials with indefinite permeability or permittivity parameters are designed by tailoring the isotropic particle into an anisotropic one. The flat lens consisting of anisotropic dielectric resonators has been designed, fabricated and tested. The experimental observation of refocusing and a plane wave with ominidirectional radiation directly verify the predicted properties, which confirm the potential application in negative index material and superlens. This work will also help to develop all-dielectric anisotropic MM devices such as 3D spatial power combination, cloak, and electromagnetic wave converter, etc.

Abstract:Anomalous field enhancement accompanied by resonant absorption phenomenon was originally discussed in the context of plasma physics and in applications related to radio-communications between the ground and spacecraft returning to Earth. Indeed, there is a critical period of time when all communications are lost due to the reflection/absorption of electromagnetic waves by the sheath of plasma created by a high speed vehicle re-entering the atmosphere. While detailed experimental studies of these phenomena in space are challenging, the emergence of electromagnetic metamaterials enables researchers exceptional flexibility to study them in the laboratory environment. Here, we experimentally demonstrated the strong localized field enhancement of magnetic field for an electromagnetic wave propagating in Mie-resonance-based inhomogeneous metamaterials with magnetic permeability gradually changing from positive to negative values. Although these experiments were performed in the microwave frequency range, the proposed all-dielectric approach to transition metamaterials can be extended to terahertz, infrared and visible frequencies. We anticipate that these results, besides most basic science aspects, hold the potential for numerous applications, including low-intensity nonlinear transformation optics, topological photonics and the broader area of surface and interface science.

Abstract:Electromagnetic materials with tunable permeability and permittivity are highly desirable for wireless communication and radar technology. However, the tunability of electromagnetic parameters is an immense challenge for conventional materials and metamaterials. Here, we demonstrate a magnetically tunable Mie resonance-based dielectric metamaterials. The magnetically tunable property is derived from the coupling of the Mie resonance of dielectric cube and ferromagnetic precession of ferrite cuboid. Both the simulated and experimental results indicate that the effective permeability and permittivity of the metamaterial can be tuned by modifying the applied magnetic field. This mechanism offers a promising means of constructing microwave devices with large tunable ranges and considerable potential for tailoring via a metamaterial route.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a micromachined switchable metamaterial with dual mode resonance which is induced at THz regime under oblique incidence. Here, we explore, both theoretically and experimentally, the dynamic dual mode switching by reshaping metamaterial elements using micromachined actuators. The mode switching allows robust control over the transmission and the reflection of the metamaterial at 0.76 THz and 1.16 THz. Such switchable dual mode metamaterial promises wide applications in optical switches, tunable filters, and THz detectors.

Asymmetric Transmission in a Mie-Based Dielectric Metamaterial with Fano Resonance

Abstract:Chiral metamaterials with asymmetric transmission can be applied as polarization-controlled devices. Here, a Mie-based dielectric metamaterial with a spacer exhibiting asymmetric transmission of linearly polarized waves at microwave frequencies was designed and demonstrated numerically. The unidirectional characteristic is attributed to the chirality of the metamolecule and the mutual excitation of the Mie resonances. Field distributions are simulated to investigate the underlying physical mechanism. Fano-type resonances emerge near the Mie resonances of the constituents and come from the destructive interference inside the structure. The near-field coupling further contributes to the asymmetric transmission. The influences of the lattice constant and the spacer thickness on the asymmetric characteristics were also analyzed by parameter sweeps. The proposed Mie-based metamaterial is of a simple structure, and it has the potential for applications in dielectric metadevices, such as high-performance polarization rotators.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Metamaterials have aroused tremendous interests in recent years owing to their peculiar electromagnetic (EM) properties and fascinating potential applications. For conventional metamaterials, these exciting properties are generally realised from their periodical structure and thus are usually detached to materials properties of internal building blocks. Also, the considerable manufacturing costs are the other factor that restricts metamaterials for mass production. A term of `metacomposites' has been previously proposed and its definition is threefold.(I) A metacomposite is a piece of metamaterial characterised by a double-negative (DNG) feature, i.e., a negative permittivity and a negative permeability. (II) The final EM properties of metacomposites are somewhat dependent on the fillers' intrinsic materials properties. (III) Metacomposites can be manufactured and tailored via an easy engineering technique to promise their cost-effectiveness. Ferromagnetic microwires are acknowledged as feasible building blocks to construct metamaterials most recently arising from their excellent soft magnetic properties and flexible magnetic tunability. In this work,a more controllable waveguide technique to model and study microwire-metacomposites and demonstrate remarkable metamaterial behaviour at microwave frequencies was deployed.

Abstract:A switchable magnetic metamaterial is demonstrated via reshaping micromachined metamaterial molecules. It is experimentally verified that the effective permeability can be switched from negative to positive near the resonant frequency. The micromachining technology offers a powerful platform for switchable metamaterials and provides more degrees of freedom for metamaterial design, easy fabrication, and large tunability.

Abstract:We show that a metallic waveguide behaves as an electric (magnetic) plasma for transverse-electric (transverse-magnetic) polarized electromagnetic (EM) waves at frequencies below cutoff value. Inserting anisotropic resonance structures of either electric or magnetic type into a waveguide, we find extraordinary transmissions of EM waves with different polarizations through the waveguide at frequencies well below the waveguide's cutoff value, following two different mechanisms. Microwave experiments, in excellent agreements with finite-different-time-domain simulations, are performed to demonstrate all theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Isotropic negative permeability composite, composed of BST-MgO dielectric cubes with high permittivity dispersed in the Teflon substrate with low permittivity, was designed and fabricated based on Mie resonance and the effective medium theory. Measurements and simulations showed that the dielectric composite exhibited a strong sub-wavelength magnetic resonance at the first Mie resonance and possessed isotropic negative permeability, which resulted from the displacement current excited in the cubes. The dielectric particle was equivalent to a magnetic dipole at the magnetic resonance, which could be adjusted by the size and permittivity of the particles. It may provide a convenient method to design isotropic metamaterials and invisible cloak at infrared and visible frequencies.

Abstract:By tailoring the intrinsic physical parameters of sub-resonators, we experimentally observe a mode transition in the cooperative metamaterials at terahertz frequencies. The transmission peak between the two lowest resonance modes experiences a non-monotonic change and the spectral response transforms from the V-type mode to the electromagnetically induced transparency-like state. Meanwhile, we employ a hybrid coupling model to theoretically study the influence of the near field coupling coefficient and the loss of resonators on their electromagnetic response and quantitatively analyze the transition of response. The calculation based on the model shows an excellent agreement with the simulated and experimental results. Our results not only provide a deep insight into the analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency but also offer an alternative approach to develop metamaterials-based devices such as slow light devices, switches, and filters in the terahertz region.
Resonant and anti-resonant frequency dependence of the effective parameters of metamaterials

Abstract:We present a numerical study of the electromagnetic response of the metamaterial elements that are usedto construct materials with negative refractive index. For an array of split ring resonators (SRR) we find that the resonant behavior of the effective magnetic permeability is accompanied by an anti-resonant behavior of the effective permittivity. In addition, the imaginary parts of the effective permittivity and permeability are opposite in sign. We also observe an identical resonant versus anti-resonant frequency dependence of the effective materials parameters for a periodic array of thin metallic wires with cuts placed periodically along the length of the wire, with roles of the permittivity and permeability reversed from the SRR case. We show in a simple manner that the finite unit cell size is responsible for the anti-resonant behavior.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we present on a thermally tunable electric Mie resonance of dielectric cut-wire type metamaterial. Dielectric cut-wire exhibits Lorentz-type frequency dependent negative effective permittivity followed by zero value around its fundamental Mie resonance, resulting from dipole-oscillation of displacement currents. Furthermore, the operation frequency of electric resonance frequency can be varied by wire length and temperature variation. As environmental temperature changes by 40 °C, electric Mie resonance can be reversibly tuned by 1000 MHz, due to the thermal dependent permittivity character of ceramic.

Abstract:An all-dielectric hyperbolic metamaterial based on anisotropic Mie resonances was proposed. The electromagnetic scattering parameters dependent on the anisotropic background material was systematically studied and the calculated electromagnetic parameters confirm the hyperbolic properties. It provided a new way towards the development of hyperbolic metamaterial with both indefinite permittivity and permeability. This approach can also be extended to develop all-dielectric transformation optics based devices, where anisotropic permittivity or permeability parameters are required. As a representative example, a flat imaging lens was simulated to verify the calculated material parameters based on the hyperbolic dispersion relation.

Abstract:An electrically tunable negative permeability metamaterial consisting of a periodic array of split ring resonators infiltrated with nematic liquid crystals is demonstrated. It shows that the transmitted resonance dip of the metamaterial can be continuously and reversibly adjusted by an applied electric field, and the maximum shift is about 210MHz with respect to the resonance frequency around 11.08GHz. Numerical simulation shows that the permeability is negative near the resonance frequency, and the frequency range with negative permeability can be dynamically adjusted and widened by about 200MHz by the electric field. It provides a convenient means to design adaptive metamaterials.
Isotropic Negative Permeability Metamaterials and Left-Handed Metamaterials Based on Miniature Structure

Abstract:We propose an isotropic structure based on double split-ring resonator. We investigate experimentally and numerically the electro- magnetic resonant properties of the proposed structure. The result shows that when the electromagnetic wave transmits in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the plane of the split ring resonator, respectively, the resonant bands having the negative permeability both arise at the same frequencies. However, when the electromagnetic wave transmits with oblique angle, the resonant characteristic is still unchanged. That is to say, resonant characteristic of the proposed structure is independent of incidence angle. This result indicates that the proposed structure is an isotropic medium. Combining the proposed double split-ring resonator structure with the wires, the left-handed metamaterial with negative refractive index can be obtained. In addition, the proposed structure has the merit of the miniaturization due to adding the metallic via-hole, which can increase the electric length of the structure. As a result, the resonant frequency of the structure shifts toward lower frequency greatly without increasing the dimension of the structure, and then the structure is still compact in the low frequency case. The introduction of the metallic via-hole can reduce the dimension of the structure by 50%. Therefore, the proposed structure will be a good candidate in the microwave applications such as antennas, filter, among others.

Abstract:Electrically tunable negative permeability metamaterial consisting of periodic array of split ring resonators (SRRs) infiltrated with nematic liquid crystals is demonstrated. Transmission measurement shows that the transmitted resonance dip of the metamaterial shifts towards low frequency as the applied electric field increases. The maximum shift is about 210 MHz and the shift can be continuously and reversible adjusted. Numerical simulation shows that the permeability of the metamaterial is negative near the resonance frequency and the frequency range with negative permeability can be dynamically adjusted and widen about 200 MHz by the applied electric field. An applied electric field changes the alignment of the liquid crystal directors and hence the dielectric constant of the structure, which permits dynamically tuning the negative permeability and provides a convenient means to add adaptive features to the metamaterials.
