Abstract:We present an experimental study of pulse dynamics in a mode-locked Er:fiber laser. By injecting a continuous wave laser with sinusoidal intensity modulation into the fiber laser, we are able to modulate the gain. Measuring the response of the pulse energy, central frequency, central pulse time, and phase to the gain modulation allows determination of the parameters that describe their coupling. Based on the experimentally derived parameters, we evaluate the free running comb linewidth and frequency uncertainty with feedback included, assuming quantum noise is the limiting factor. Optimization of fiber lasers is also discussed.
Full-field Real-Time Characterization of Creeping Solitons Dynamics in a Mode-Locked Fiber Laser

Abstract:Creeping solitons, which belong to the class of pulsating solitons, can be meaningful for fundamental physics owing to their fruitful nonlinear dynamics. Their characteristics in mode-locked lasers have been studied theoretically, but it is difficult to experimentally observe evolution dynamics in real time. Here, we have experimentally observed the temporal and spectral evolution dynamics of creeping solitons in a passively mode-locked fiber laser by employing time-lens and dispersive Fourier transform technique. With the aid of Raman amplification, the measured recording length of the time lens in the asynchronous mode could be substantially improved. Temporal soliton snaking motion and spectral breathing dynamics are experimentally obtained, confirming intrinsic feature of pulsation dynamics. These results display how single-shot measurements can offer new insights into ultrafast transient dynamics in nonlinear optics.

Abstract: We investigate the buildup dynamics of broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse (QS-NLP) driven by slow gain dynamics in a microfiber-based passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. Based on shot-to-shot tracing of the transient optical spectra and qualitatively reproduced numerial simulation, we demonstrate that slow gain dynamics is deeply involved in the onset of such complex temporal and spectral instabilities of QS-NLP. The proposed dynamic model in this work could contribute to deeper insight of such nonlinear dynamics and transient dynamics simulation in ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:Two mode-lock regimes are observed experimentally and theoretically in the all-normal-dispersion fiber lasers: strong-and weak-modulation regimes. The pulse properties of these two regimes are investigated and summarized. The weak-modulation regime provides stable mode-locked pulses with picosecond pulse duration and broad spectrum linewidth. It well fits the chirped-pulse amplification as a seed source. An all-fiber all-normal-dispersion fiber ring laser is established. Stable mode-locked pulses with a pulse duration of 75 ps and a linewidth of 17.8 nm are obtained. The experimental results have a good agreement with the weak-modulation regime predicted in theory. Abstract:Triple different operation regimes like passive Q-switched (PQS), Q-switched mode-locking (QSML) and continuous-wave mode-locking (CWML) are experimentally observed as progressive pulse dynamics in a mode-locked fiber laser, which is constructed with several-meters of cascaded small-core erbium/bismuth co-doped fiber (EBCF) to engineer the cavity loss modulation. The pulse fission evolution from PQS to QSML to CWML operation is flexibly achieved through pump power variation as the only control parameter at fixed polarization orientation. Output characteristics in all triple operation regimes are studied in detail and particularly the pulse transitional process between PQS and QSML is reported experimentally for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The laser pulse formation criteria for different operation regimes are also theoretically analyzed. The obtained results and analysis disclose the complete pulses evolution process from PQS to QSML to CWML operation, which contribute to further understanding of the complex laser pulses evolution dynamics and formation mechanism in a passively mode-locked fiber laser.

Abstract:Transition from a gain-guided soliton (GGS) to a fully developed noise-like pulse (NLP) is numerically demonstrated in fiber lasers operated in the normal dispersion regime, which explains well the experimental observation of spectrum evolution that the bottom of the averaged spectrum gradually broadens with pump power increasing. Numerical results suggest that the transition could also happen under the condition of cavity linear phase delay bias change with fixed pump power. It is demonstrated that the peak power clamping effect and the normal dispersion are the key factors leading to the spectrum evolution. In addition, intermittent meta-stable states between GGS and NLP can be obtained when the cavity dispersion is chosen at small normal dispersion.

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally analyze the output characteristics and pulse dynamics of carbon nanotube mode-locked fiber lasers near zero cavity dispersion (from 0.02 to ~-0.02 ps(2)). We focus on such near zero dispersion cavities to reveal the dispersion related transition between different mode-locking regimes (such as soliton-like, stretched-pulse and self-similar regimes). Using our proposed model, we develop a nanotube-mode-locked fiber laser setup generating ~97 fs pulse which operates in the stretched-pulse regime. The corresponding experimental results and pulse dynamics are in good agreement with the numerical results. Also, the experimental results from soliton-like and self-similar regimes exhibit the same trends with simulations. Our study will aid design of different mode-locking regimes based on other new saturable absorber materials to achieve ultra-short pulse duration.

Abstract:Mode-locking is a milestone in the history of lasers that allows the generation of short light pulses and stabilization of lasers. This phenomenon is known to occur only in standard ordered lasers for long time and until recently it is found that it also occurs in disordered random lasers formed by nanoscale particles. Here, we report the realization of a so-called quasi mode-locking of coherent feedback random fiber laser which consists of a partially disordered linear cavity formed between a point reflector and a random distributed fiber Bragg grating array with an inserted graphene saturable absorber. We show that multi-groups of regular light pulses/sub-pulses with different repetition frequencies are generated within the quasi mode-locking regime through the so-called collective resonances phenomenon in such a random fiber laser. This work may provide a platform to study mode locking as well as pulse dynamic regulation of random lasing emission of coherent feedback disordered structures and pave the way to the development of novel multi-frequency pulse fiber lasers with potentially wide frequency tuning range.

Abstract:Harmonic mode-locking, realized actively or passively, is an effective technique for increasing the repetition rate of lasers, with important applications in optical sampling, laser micro-machining and frequency metrology. It is critically important to understand how a harmonically mode-locked pulse train responds to external perturbations and noise, so as to make sure that it is stable and resistant to noise. Here, in a series of carefully designed experiments, we elucidate the retiming dynamics of laser pulses generated in a soliton fiber laser harmonically mode-locked at ~2 GHz to the acoustic resonance in a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) core. We characterize the self-driven optomechanical lattice along the PCF using a homodyne set-up, and reveal that each soliton undergoes damped oscillatory retiming within its trapping potential after an abrupt perturbation. In addition we show, through statistical analysis of the intra-cavity pulse spacing, how the trapping potentials are effective for suppressing timing jitter. The experimental results are well described using a dynamic model including dissipation, which provides valuable insight into the stability and noise performance of optomechanically mode-locked laser systems, and may also be useful for studying complex inter-soliton interactions.

Abstract:We identify a new regime where laser pulses represent the dynamics of rectangular-shaped wave packets (RSWPs) in a passively mode-locked Tm3+-doped fiber laser. In this regime the laser consists of a train of mode-locked pulses underneath a rectangular-shaped envelope. The density of pulses within a RSWP can be as high as 2.8 GHz, which is consistent with cavity fundamental repetition rate. The effects of small-signal gain value, pulse repetition rate, and net dispersion on the RSWP performance are analyzed. These results imply that this new regime particularly favors high-repetition-rate ultrafast lasers. We further reproduce the phenomenon from using numerical simulations and understand such behavior by referring to the nonlinear dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, we employ a symmetrical graded index multimode fiber-step index multimode fiber-graded index multimode fiber (GIMF-SIMF-GIMF) structure as artificial saturable absorber to achieve mode-locked operation in an Erbium-doped fiber laser. After optimizing the cavity length, pump power and orientation of polarization controller, noise-like pulse (NLP) is built in anomalous dispersion region experimentally. It is worth noting that except for the traditional NLP, a special NLP with unique features is obtained whose temporal and spectral properties are different from the known case on NLP reported before. According to the experimental results, we also acquire and compare properties of subpulse within NLP envelope with the change of pump power. Last but not least, harmonic of the peculiar NLP is found under appropriate cavity conditions.

Abstract:We experimentally studied the transition dynamics between consecutive multi-pulsing states, specifically the build-up and annihilation of soliton pulses between a double pulsing and a three-pulse state, utilizing the dispersive Fourier transform technique. The birth of an additional pulse in a mode-locked soliton fiber laser in a multi-pulsing regime arises from a dispersive wave-induced narrow-band pulse that experiences strong intensity fluctuations, while the other soliton pulses maintain their shapes. During the decaying process to a double pulsing state, it is observed that all the pulses undergo a unique breathing behavior before settling into a steady state.

Observation of Transition Between Multimode Q-switching and Spatiotemporal Mode Locking

Abstract:We report experimental observation of multimode Q-switching and spatiotemporal mode locking in a multimode fiber laser. A typical steady Q-switching state is achieved with a 1.88 μs pulse duration, a 70.14 kHz repetition rate, and a 215.8 mW output power, corresponding to the single pulse energy of 3.08 μJ. We find weak spatial filtering is essential to obtain stable Q-switched pulses, in contrast to the relatively stronger spatial filtering for spatiotemporal mode locking. Furthermore, a reversible transition process, as well as a critical bistable state, between multimode Q-switching and spatiotemporal mode locking, is achieved with specific spatial coupling and waveplates sets. We believe the results will not only contribute to understanding the complicated nonlinear dynamics in multimode, fiber-based platforms, but also benefit the development of promising high-pulse energy lasers.

Abstract:We report a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with pulsewidths switchable from 473 fs to 76.8 ns, where the fundamental mode-locking, noise-like pulse, nanosecond mode-locking, and dual-width mode-locking are obtained by adjusting a polarization controller. Co-existence of femto- and nano-second pulses in dual-width mode-locking is attributed to the gain balancing. Analytic modeling of the fiber laser with cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation is presented, in which the pulsewidths are calculated as functions of dispersion, saturable absorption, and self-phase modulation. The generation of nanosecond pulses is attributed to weakened intracavity pulse-shortening strength and reduced effective self-phase modulation in the laser cavity.

Abstract:The optimized soliton mode locking of the erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) and its pulse-shortening dynamic with the graphene nanosheet is demonstrated by precisely detuning the weakly negative group-delay dispersion (GDD) and maintaining strong self-phase-modulation (SPM), to obtain the shortest pulse width of 449 fs with a spectral linewidth of 6.02 nm. The pulse evolution with the mode-locking mechanism changing from the self-amplitude-modulation of the saturable absorber, to the soliton compression caused by the GDD and SPM is experimentally and numerically investigated in detail. Under high pumping powers, the enlarged up-chirp inside the EDFL cavity can induce a significant Kelly-sideband shift of up to 0.5 nm. The passively-mode-locked EDFL pulse width is controllable by detuning the GDD and SPM parameters, so that the pulse width can be compressed from 642 to 449 fs while reducing the negative GDD from −0.354 to −0.154 ps2. The compression ratio can be also improved by strengthening the SPM at this stage.

Abstract:An Er-doped all-fiber ultrashort pulse laser with positive total net-cavity group-velocity dispersion is demonstrated based on a hybrid mode-locking mechanism ensured by single-walled carbon–boron–nitrogen nanotubes with coaction of the nonlinear polarization evolution effect. The generation regime with a similariton-like spectrum is obtained. The spectrum width is ~31.5 nm, and the minimal pulse duration is ~294 fs at full width at half maximum. The average output power is ~3.2 mW, corresponding to 0.376 nJ pulse energy and 1.25 kW peak power. The fundamental pulse repetition rate is ~8.5 MHz, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 60 dB. The standard deviation of average output optical power stability, measured for 12 h, is about ~1% RMS, and the maximum level of relative intensity noise (RIN) does not exceed <−120 dBc/Hz in the 30 Hz–1 MHz frequency range. To prove the similariton-like regime generation, we also studied numerically and experimentally the pulse evolution during propagation through a laser resonator and output single-mode fiber with anomalous dispersion.

Abstract:An external-cavity laser with resonant optical feedback is a common and mature method to achieve narrow linewidth lasers. Since the proposal of optical feedback in 1964, a series of studies on resonant optical feedback have been reported. Although longer feedback length leads to narrower linewidth, it also introduces coupling of environmental noise and causes instability in the laser cavity, which is detrimental to high-speed tuning of the laser wavelength. With such a challenge, current research on resonant optical feedback primarily focuses on the static results of laser linewidth compression. In order to obtain narrow linewidth high-speed tuned external-cavity lasers, further research on the laser dynamics is required to obtain dynamic tuning of narrow linewidth external-cavity lasers. In this work, we construct an external-cavity laser based on resonant optical feedback, and utilize a coherent detection method to measure the dynamic process of laser linewidth compression and wavelength tuning. Based on resonant optical feedback from the external cavity, the linewidth of the main-cavity laser can be compressed from near 100 kHz to the 100 Hz level, with the frequency noise compressed from the order of 104 to the 102 Hz2/Hz level. Since the wavelength switching process includes frequency shift process, linewidth compression process, and frequency stabilization process, etc., we first conduct a research on laser linewidth compression dynamics. In the results of linewidth compression dynamics, we discover that using a shorter fiber ring results in shorter linewidth compression time, which is advantageous for laser dynamic tuning. We subsequently carry out the laser wavelength switching process with a main-cavity switching time in milliseconds. In the wavelength switching process, while undergoing the frequency shift process of fast tuning transient laser frequency, the laser first undergoes the linewidth broadening process, then enters the main-cavity laser frequency stabilization process and undergoes the linewidth compression process at the same time. The experimental results show that the 100 m feedback fiber ring will not significantly increase the external-cavity laser wavelength switching time under the condition that linewidth compression is faster than main-cavity laser switching, while a longer fiber ring will introduce a strong noise. Our work experimentally demonstrates that shorter feedback ring lengths lead to faster compression, which provides valuable insights for the development of high-speed and high-precision tunable narrow linewidth external-cavity lasers.
