Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10−2 which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Efficient Third-Harmonic Generation Based on Tamm Plasmon Polaritons

Abstract:We theoretically investigate efficient third-harmonic generation (THG) in the heterostructure with a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) and a thick metal film. There are both the fundamental Tamm plasmon mode and the high-order mode in the heterostructure. Commonly these two Tamm plasmon modes just satisfy single-resonance condition, but the double-resonance condition can be fulfilled by using a binary PC in the heterostructure. Taking advantage of the tunneling effect of Tamm plasmon modes, THG in the single-resonance heterostructure is enhanced over 3 orders of magnitude more than that in the single metal film, and that in the double-resonance one is further enhanced nearly 2 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) circular photonic crystal fiber (CPCF) with the similar distribution of air holes as that in variable-size circular photonic crystal in polyethylene material was introduced. Guiding and dispersion properties of the CPCF with different parameters have been accurately computed. Results show that the CPCF is a useful terahertz waveguide which has good ability to confine THz fields, low group-velocity dispersion parameter and low relative dispersion slope. Furthermore, the polyethylene material that is transparent to terahertz wave is inexpensive and easy to operate.
Generation of Third Harmonic Emission in Propagation of Femtosecond Laser Pulses in Air

Abstract:The main characteristics of the third harmonic emission generated by femtosecond laser pulses propagating in air are investigated by numerically solving the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations. Strong third harmonic emission is observed with a maximum conversion efficiency as high as 0.43%. The on-axis phase difference between fundamental beam and third harmonic is investigated. The result is in good agreement with the phase-locking mechanism. Dependence of the conversion of third harmonic emission on focusing conditions is also studied. The results are also compared with those of experiments.

Abstract:We investigate and simulate the light transmitting and coupling characteristics of surface mode waveguides (SMWs) based on photonic crystals (PhCs) with a triangular lattice of air holes. We demonstrate that surface waves can be efficiently propagated and served as a new kind of high-efficiency single-SMW-based filter with broad bandwidth in the outer space of PhCs. We also explore the highly efficient coupling of hetero-SMWs constructed by cascading different truncated surfaces. The coupling efficiency is insensitive to the interface position. Abstract:Using the special dispersion properties of photonic crystals (PhCs), we present a promising novel coupling device, the terahertz (THz) planar photonic crystal (PhC) lens. Three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) calculations show a 90% power transfer from a 100 mum waveguide to a 10 mum waveguide, and experimental results confirm its high efficiency. Furthermore, the PhC lens couples the wave into a PhC line-defect waveguide is also reported. These achievements manifest the usefulness of the PhC lens as an effective approach to couple the wave into future THz; circuits.

Abstract:In this work, a doubly resonant photonic crystal (PhC) cavity is proposed to enhance second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency and photon pair generation rate (PGR). Through the exploration of geometry parameters, a band-edge mode within the light cone is identified as the first harmonic (FH) mode, and a band-edge mode outside the light cone is designated as the second harmonic (SH). Subsequently, by increasing the layers of the core region, a heterostructure PhC cavity is designed. The results showcase a doubly resonant PhC cavity achieving a 133/W SHG efficiency and a photon pair generation rate of 3.7 × 108/s. The exceptional conversion efficiency is attributed to the high quality factors Q observed in the FH and SH modes with values of approximately 280,000 and 2100, respectively. The remarkably high Q factors compensate for nonlinear efficiency degradation caused by detuning, simultaneously making the manufacturing process easier and more feasible. This work is anticipated to provide valuable insights into efficient nonlinear conversion and photon pair generation rates.

Simultaneous Generation of Ultrabroadband Noise-Like Pulses and Intracavity Third Harmonic at 2 Μm

Abstract:We demonstrated that ultrabroadband noise-like pulses (NLPs) spanning from below 1600 nm to beyond 2300 nm can be generated in Tm-doped fiber lasers enabled by an optical microfiber. Meanwhile, pronounced red light around 660 nm was also observed, which was attributed to the intracavity third harmonic generation (THG) of ultrashort pulses by harnessing the intermodal phase matching in the optical microfiber. As far as we know, it is the first time to simultaneously observe the ultrabroadband NLPs and the intracavity THG in ultrafast fiber lasers, and it is anticipated that these ultrabroadband NLPs can be adopted as a compact broadband source for optical spectroscopy around 2 µm and a wonderful potential seed for supercontinuum generation in the mid-infrared. Moreover, the THG of the intracavity high peak power NLPs in ultrafast fiber lasers provides a new kind of fiber-format visible light source.

Abstract:An effective approach is proposed to broaden the spectrum of high-efficiency second harmonic generation in a one-dimensional photonic crystal based on the cascaded structure. By controlling the thickness of the joint layer, it is possible to realize a flat-top or quasiflat-top impurity band centered at the fundamental wavelength due to mode splitting effect in coupled cavities. Simulation results reveal that the spectrum of generated second harmonic exhibits a hump-like or multi-peak profile with wavelength tuning. It is a salient feature that the spectral stability of efficiency enhancement could be greatly improved compared to the conventional Lorentzian profile while maintaining an ultrahigh Q factor. Such merit of spectra re-shaping can significantly relax the stringent requirements for ultrahigh-Q microcavities in practical applications, e.g. fabrication inaccuracy, thermal variation, and wavelength detuning.

Abstract:An all-optical microwave generation using a multi-wavelength photonic crystal fiber Brillouin laser is presented. A highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber with the length of 25m is used as Brillouin gain medium. A Fabry-Perot cavity with two fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors are designed in order to enhance the Brillouin conversion efficiency. The fiber Bragg gratings can be used to selectively excite the jth-order Stokes' wave and suppress other order Stokes' waves. The mechanism for microwave/millimeter-wave generation is theoretically analyzed. In the experiment, both 9.788 GHz and 19.579 GHz microwave signals are achieved through mixing the pump wave with the first-order and the second-order Stokes' waves.

Abstract:Quantum light sources are the core resources for photonics-based quantum information processing. We investigate the spectral engineering of photon triplets generated by third-order spontaneous parametric down-conversion in micro/nanofiber. The phase mismatching at one-third pump frequency gives rise to non-degenerate photon triplets, the joint spectral intensity of which has an elliptical locus with a fixed eccentricity of . Therefore, we propose a frequency-division scheme to separate non-degenerate photon triplets into three channels with high heralding efficiency for the first time. Choosing an appropriate pump wavelength can compensate for the fabrication errors of micro/nanofiber and also generate narrowband, non-degenerate photon triplet sources with high signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, the long-period micro/nanofiber grating introduces a new controllable degree of freedom to tailor phase matching, resulting from the periodic oscillation of dispersion. In this scheme, the wavelength of photon triplets can be flexibly tuned using quasi-phase matching. We study the generation of photon triplets from this novel perspective of spectrum engineering, and we believe that this work will accelerate the practical implementation of photon triplets in quantum information processing.

Abstract:We present two novel hybrid photonic structures made of silica that possess two well-separated frequency bandgaps. The addition of interstitial air holes in a precise location and size allows these bandgaps to open up with a ratio of ${\sim3}$ between their central frequencies at the air line ${ck_z/w=1}$, thus fulfilling the basic guidance condition for third harmonic generation in hollow-core fibers. In addition, these designs may serve as high-power laser delivery of two well-separated wavelengths, such as visible and near infrared.

Abstract:For high birefringence photonic crystal fibres (PCF) operating in terahertz (THz) regime, an outstanding model of slotted porous core with triangular lattice-based hexagonal shape cladding has been presented in this study. In this proposed THz-PCF, a five-layer circular air holes arranged in hexagon configuration have been placed in the cladding area, and five rectangular air holes have been positioned in core region for investigating the THz-PCF in polarization maintaining applications. The asymmetrical rectangular slots in core area creates difference between x and y polarized THz waves to offer high birefringence. The compact geometry of hexagonal structure in cladding offers more useful power confinement. The designed PCF offers high birefringence of 0.0866, low effective material loss of 0.0786 cm −1 , core power fraction of 42.7%, less confinement loss of 0.02598 cm −1 , low dispersion of 0.0963 ps/THz/cm and very less effective area of 0.03 μm 2 in a broad frequency range of 0.1–2.3 THz, according to the Finite Element Method based simulation results in COMSOL Multiphysics software. These features enable the proposed PCF to be a better choice for numerous applications like polarization filtering, sensing, short distance communication, etc. in THz photonic integrated circuits.

Extreme Terahertz Electric-Field Enhancement in High-Q Photonic Crystal Slab Cavity with Nanoholes.

Abstract:A one-dimensional photonic-crystal (PC) cavity with nanoholes is proposed for extreme enhancement of terahertz (THz) electric fields using the electromagnetic (EM) boundary conditions. Both slot (for the perpendicular component of the electric displacement field) and anti-slot (for the parallel component of the electric field) effects contribute to the considerable field enhancement. The EM energy density can be enhanced by a factor of (εh/εl)2 in the high-refractive-index material, where εh and εl are the permittivities of the high- and low-refractive-index materials, respectively. Correspondingly, the mode volume can be reduced by a factor of 288, compared with a conventional THz PC cavity, and is three orders of magnitude smaller than the diffraction limitation. Further, the proposed THz cavity design also supports modes with high quality factors (Q) > 104, which induces strong Purcell enhancement by a factor exceeding 106. Our THz cavity design is feasible and attractive for experimental demonstrations, because the semiconductor layer in which the EM is maximized can naturally be filled with quantum-engineered active materials. Thus, the proposed design can possibly be used to develop room-temperature coherent THz radiation sources.

Abstract:To improve the nonlinear frequency conversion efficiency of a broadband picosecond fiber laser, the spectrally noncritical phase matching for frequency doubling, dual-crystal cascaded design for frequency tripling is employed. By this method, we obtain 2.39 W of output power at the third-harmonic wavelength, when the spectral full width at half maximum of the fundamental light is 5.5 nm and the input fundamental light power is 8.6 W. The frequency conversion efficiency of IR-UV is 27.8%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time of the broadband third harmonic picosecond ultraviolet laser generation by the combination of the spectrally noncritical phase matching for frequency doubling and dual-crystal cascaded design for frequency tripling.

Abstract:We propose a kind of square porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for polarization-maintaining terahertz (THz) wave guidance. An asymmetry is introduced by implementing rectangular array air holes in the porous core of the PCF, and ultrahigh birefringence and low effective material loss (EML) can be achieved simultaneously. The properties of THz wave propagation are analyzed numerically in detail. The numerical results indicate that the proposed fiber offers a high birefringence of 0.063 and a low EML of 0.081 cm(-1) at 1 THz. Moreover, a very low flattened dispersion profile is observed over a wide frequency domain of 0.85-1.9 THz. The zero flattened dispersion can be controlled. It is predicted that this PCF would be used potentially in polarization maintaining and dispersion management of THz waves. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this work, we present a novel hexagonal lattice porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) exhibiting high birefringence, low loss, and near-zero flattened dispersion in the terahertz regime. The core design incorporates asymmetric rectangular and triangular air holes to achieve enhanced birefringence performance. The background material, TOPAS, is carefully selected to minimize dispersion and transmission losses. Furthermore, by employing the finite element method, the guiding properties of the proposed PCF are comprehensively investigated. Our simulation results reveal a near-zero flattened dispersion value of "±0.2ps∙THz^-1∙cm^-1" within a broad frequency range of "0.8-1.6THz" , accompanied by an impressive birefringence value of "0.072" . Additionally, the PCF demonstrates outstanding characteristics in terms of confinement loss, effective material loss, effective mode area, core power fraction, and bending loss. Considering its exceptional attributes, the proposed PCF holds significant promise for polarization-maintaining applications and terahertz communication systems.

Abstract:Two structures of circular lattice Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCFs) based on $Ge_{20}Sb_{15}Se_{65}$ (GSS) material have been proposed for a highly coherent broadband supercontinuum generation (SCG) in the mid-infrared region. Numerical studies on both structures show that the fundamental modes are well confined in the core while the confinement losses are very low. Also, the high nonlinear coefficient of 22.01 $W^{-1}m^{-1}$ and 17.99202 $W^{-1}m^{-1}$ for the two structures ensure that these structures can accomplish a high nonlinear activity. It has been found that broadband supercontinuum (SCs) spanning from 0.45 $\mu$m to 5.3 $\mu$m and 0.48 ${\mu}$m to 6.5 ${\mu}$m can be generated using a hyperbolic secant pulse of 0.5 kW. The proposed structures also show very good structural tolerance to optical properties that prevent any radical shift in SC spectra owing to potential fabrication mismatch.

Abstract:Successful phase-matching methods for Third Harmonics Generation (THG) include phase-matching in birefringent crystal and quasi-phase-matching (QPM) in crystal with periodically poled domains. However, these methods are not feasible in some isotropic materials (e.g. fused silica and photosensitive silicate glass). It was known that volume-grating in isotropic materials can independently generate frequency-converted waves. One of disadvantages of single-layer volume-grating is that the brightness of harmonic emission can not be enhanced by increasing the grating thickness. In this paper, a THG device with stratified sub-gratings was designed to enhance THG in isotropic materials: several sub-gratings were arranged parallel, and the grating-figures misalignment between neighboring sub-gratings was pre-fabricated. In terms of extension of interaction length in THG, our multi-layer sub-grating is formally equivalent to the multi-layer periodically poled crystal (e.g. lithium niobate) in conventional QPM approach. According to the calculation results, the N-layer (N >2) can, in principle, generate TH output intensity of N*N times stronger than single-layer volume-grating does, also compared to N times stronger than N-layer without figures-misalignment. The effect of random fabrication error in grating thickness on normalized conversion efficiency was discussed.
