Abstract:In a certain magnetic field, spin exchange collision is one of the limiting factors for coherence preserving in atomic magnetometers, which directly affects the detection sensitivity that the magnetometer can achieve. The light narrowing effect can be used to reduce the resonance linewidth caused by spin-exchange collisions. Previous observations of the light narrowing effect arc based on atomic magnetometers with continuous pumped laser and radio frequency field, which have additional effects on the atomic resonance linewidth. Based on a pulse-pumped atomic magnetometer, the effects of atomic destructive collisions and magnetic field inhomogeneity on resonance linewidth arc greatly reduced, and a direct experimental observation and verification of the light narrowing effect arc realized. As pulse-pumped mode is beneficial to the realization of high atomic polarization, the study of light narrowing effect is of great importance for exploring the sensitivity limit of pulse-pumped atomic magnetometers.

Abstract:A cesium atomic magnetometer based on laser-pumped rf resonance has been investigated and demonstrated experimentally. Atoms are polarized and pumped to dark states by circularly polarized light. When there exists a magnetic field, the corresponding magnetization will be precessing around the magnetic field at Larmor frequency. By means of adding a resonant rf magnetic field, the atoms will be depolarized and absorb photons again. By detecting the spectrum of the transmitted light, one can obtain the information about the external magnetic field. We build an 894nm external cavity diode laser with a frequency stabilization device, and a low noise magnetic field measurement environment. After the optimization of the magnetometer parameter and closed-loop measurement, an ultimate sensitivity of 19 fT/Hz(1/2) and an intrinsic sensitivity of 1.8 pT/Hz(1/2) have been achieved with the spatial resolution smaller than 2 cm.

Abstract:An atomic magnetometer based on optically detected magnetic resonance is investigated and demonstrated experimentally. We build an 894 nm external cavity diode laser which is frequency locked to the F = 4 -> F' = 3 transition of Cs D-1 line with DAVLL spectroscopy. With the phase-locked loop, the frequency of the rf coils is actively locked to the Larmor frequency and the magnetometer tracks the magnetic field variations in a phase coherent manner. An ultimate sensitivity of 19 fT/Hz(1/2) and an intrinsic sensitivity of 8.6 pT/Hz(1/2) in the magnetic environment which is close to geomagnetic field have been achieved with the spatial resolution smaller than 2 cm.

Abstract:Spin-exchange free-relaxation (SERF) co-magnetometer has promising applications in the field of inertial navigation and fundamental physics experiments since its coupled spin ensemble is capable of measuring rotation with ultra-high sensitivity. Electron spin polarization determines the performance of the SERF co-magnetometer directly. In this paper, it is found that there is a non-negligible coupling between the probe light frequency and electron spin polarization. A model of the polarization in relation to the probe light frequency for a hybrid pumping cell is established. This paper discovers the existence of a theoretical optimum frequency that enables a more stable polarization in the model, and an experimental verification is carried out. Experiments results show that when the SERF co-magnetometer operates at this optimization frequency, its short- and long-term stability is significantly enhanced. Further, based on this model, the detuned frequency stabilization technique is proposed. The long-term stability of the probe light frequency is also improved by 43.85% after closing the loop.

Abstract:Atomic comagnetometers, which measure the spin precession frequencies of overlapped species simultaneously, are widely applied to search for exotic spin-dependent interactions. Here we propose and implement an all-optical single-species Cs atomic comagnetometer based on the optical free induction decay (FID) signal of Cs atoms in hyperfine levels $$F_{g}$$ = 3 and 4 within the same atomic ensemble. We experimentally show that systematic errors induced by magnetic field gradients and pump light are highly suppressed in the comagnetometer. With further optimization, the single-species comagnetometer has the potential to be applied in searches for exotic spin-dependent interactions.

Abstract:We report our recent progress in the experimental implementing of an all-optical 4 He atomic magnetometer being free from the dead-zone effect. A liquid crystal is adopted to constitute a polarization rotator. The light linear polarization vector can be adjusted and ultimately kept perpendicular with respect to the varying ambient magnetic field direction. We then make some further investigations to enhance the magnetometer sensitivity through reducing the laser intensity noise and optimizing parameters like the laser beam size, the input laser power and the modulation depth. The magnetometer demonstrates an improved magnetic field sensitivity of about 300 fT/Hz 1/2 for frequencies above 10 Hz.
Improving Sensitivity of an Amplitude-Modulated Magneto-Optical Atomic Magnetometer using Squeezed Light

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate that a squeezed probe optical field can improve the sensitivity of the magnetic field measurements based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) with an amplitude-modulated pump when compared to a coherent probe field under identical conditions. To realize an all-atomic magnetometer prototype, we utilize a nonlinear atomic interaction, known as polarization self-rotation(PSR), to produce a squeezed probe field. An independent pump field, amplitude-modulated at the Larmor frequency of the bias magnetic field, allows us to extend the range of most sensitive NMOR measurements to sub-Gauss magnetic fields. While the overall sensitivity of the magnetometer is rather low ($>250\mathrm{pT}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$, we clearly observe a $15\%$ sensitivity improvement when the squeezed probe is used. Our observations confirm the recently reported quantum enhancement in a modulated atomic magnetometer <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2108.01519" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2108.01519">arXiv:2108.01519</a> [quant-ph].

Abstract:Comagnetometers have been widely used in fundamental research, such as tests of spin-gravity coupling and searches for permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs). Here, we report a comagnetometer that consists of simultaneous closed-loop oscillation of the F = 1 and F = 2 hyperfine Zeeman transitions of optically aligned 87Rb atoms. The Allan deviation of the F = 2 and F = 1 oscillation-frequency ratio reaches 1 x 10-9 after running continuously for 2 days, corresponding to a sensitivity of approximately 4 x 10-19 eV for the measurement of the hypothetical spin-dependent gravitational energy of the proton. The long-term stability of the comagnetometer can be further improved by system-level thermal control and optimization of the experimental parameters.

Abstract:Atom sensing based on Faraday rotation is an indispensable method for precision measurements, universally suitable for both hot and cold atomic systems. Here we demonstrate an all-optical magnetometer where the optical cell for Faraday rotation spectroscopy is augmented with a low finesse cavity. Unlike in previous experiments, where specifically designed multipass cells had been employed, our scheme allows to use conventional, spherical vapour cells. Spherical shaped cells have the advantage that they can be effectively coated inside with a spin relaxation suppressing layer providing long spin coherence times without addition of a buffer gas. Cavity enhancement shows in an increase in optical polarization rotation and sensitivity compared to single-pass configurations.

Abstract:We propose an active all-optical magnetometer based on Cesium four-level atomic system. The magnetometer is free of radio frequency antenna, thus has smaller measure volumes. With an theoretical milli Hertz linewidth of the four-level active optical clock, the magnetometer has a potential sensitivity of tens of fT Hz -1/2 .

Abstract:We suggest a multiatom cavity quantum electrodynamics system for the weak magnetic field detection based on Faraday rotation with intracavity electromagnetically induced transparency. Our study demonstrates that the collective coupling between the cavity modes and the atomic ensemble can be used to improve the sensitivity. With single probe photon input, the sensitivity is inversely proportional to the number of atoms, and the sensitivity with 0.7(5)~nT/$\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ could be attained. With multiphoton measurement, our numerical calculations show that the magnetic field sensitivity can be improved to 4.7(9)~fT/$\sqrt{\rm Hz}$.

Abstract:In this study, we explore the impact of pumping beams with different transverse intensity profiles on the performance of the spin-exchange relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometers (AMs). We conduct experiments comparing the traditional Gaussian optically-pumped AM with that utilizing the flat-top optically-pumped (FTOP) method. Our findings reveal that the FTOP-based approach outperforms the conventional method, exhibiting a larger response, a narrower magnetic resonance linewidth, and a superior low-frequency noise performance. Specifically, the use of FTOP method leads to a 16% enhancement in average sensitivity within 1-30 Hz frequency range. Our research emphasizes the significance of achieving transverse polarization uniformity in AMs, providing insights for future optimization efforts and sensitivity improvements in miniaturized magnetometers.

Abstract:Functional imaging equipment based on miniaturized atomic magnetometers with array arrangement exhibits promising prospects in biomagnetic scenarios. However, crosstalk from the modulated magnetic field between adjacent sensors degrades the imaging accuracy. To address this issue, this study proposes an all-optical dual-axis zero-field atomic magnetometer using light-shift modulation. We utilize an acousto-optic modulator to modulate a detuned circularly polarized beam for pumping the atomic spin ensembles. This beam allows for the optical modulation of spin polarization and meanwhile generates a light-shift modulation, effectively replacing the conventional magnetic field modulation. By using a probe beam to detect the optical rotation angle perpendicular to the direction of the pump beam, we construct an all-optical configuration of a longitudinally modulated atomic magnetometer, enabling dual-axis magnetic field measurements. Experimental results demonstrate dual-axis sensitivities of 29 and 15fT/Hz1/2 , respectively. This method eliminates the need for conventional coil-based magnetic field modulation, thereby paving the way for potential applications in magnetocardiography and magnetoencephalography. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.014023 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:In optical atomic magnetometers (AMs), the light-shift caused by the circularly polarized pumping beam have a significant impact on the response and is also one of the non-negligible sources of the noise. In this paper, we develop a novel method whereby utilizing the symmetry of the frequency response in an AM to measure and cancel the light-shift. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze and experimentally verify a rapid method of magnetic field compensation and the approach is convenient to measure and cancel of the light-shift. Moreover, the influence of intensity and frequency of the pumping beam is also investigated. The proposed method of in - situ measurement and cancellation of light-shift will be particularly profitable to other optical systems based on AMs.

Abstract:Atomic magnetometers are widely acknowledged as one of the most sensitive devices for magnetic field measurement. Our study presents a novel method that enables bandwidth expansion of single-beam magnetometers in the spin-exchange relaxation-free regime. This method bases on increasing the modulation amplitude of magnetic field combining with negative feedback with proportional gain. Through our method, the magnetometer’s total relaxation rate is moderately increased by elevating modulation amplitude and frequency, and correspondingly, the detection bandwidth experiences dramatic improvement from 230 Hz to 1380 Hz. The application of negative feedback with proportional gain further increases this bandwidth to higher than 4 kHz, which is over 17 times of its original value. The sensitivity of the magnetometer under this condition is measured as 25 fT/$\text {Hz}^{\text {1/2}}$ for open-loop scheme and 35 fT/$\text {Hz}^{\text {1/2}}$ for closed-loop scheme. Comparatively, the sensitivity measured on conventional conditions in our experiment is 12 fT/$\text {Hz}^{\text {1/2}}$ . This approach offers a profitable trade-off that extraordinary expansion of detection bandwidth can be acquired with the price of a little sensitivity loss. Our method is advantageous for miniaturization of atomic magnetometers as no extra hardware is added, which is of special interest for applications including biomagnetic measurement where large detection bandwidth is sometimes in need.

Abstract:A highly sensitive all-optical atomic magnetometer based on the magnetooptical effect which uses the advanced technique of single laser beam detection is reported and demonstrated experimentally. A sensitivity of 0.5 pT/Hz(1/2) is obtained by analyzing the magnetic noise spectrum, which exceeds that of most traditional magnetometers. This kind of atomic magnetometer is very compact, has a low power consumption, and has a high theoretical sensitivity limit, which make it suitable for many applications.

Abstract:We propose to embed the atomic magnetometer (AM) into an optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). We analyze the effect of amplification of the Faraday rotation angle of the probe laser light, by properly postselecting the path-information state of the laser photons when passing through the MZI. The proposed scheme provides a postselected metrological protocol of probing weak magnetic fields, having a potential to further enhance the sensitivity of the nowadays state-of-the-art optical AM.

Abstract:We report the design and performance of a nonmagnetic drift stable optically pumped cesium magnetometer with a measured sensitivity of 35 fT at 200 s integration time and stability below 50 fT between 70 and 600 s. The sensor is based on the nonlinear magneto-optical rotation effect: in a Bell–Bloom configuration, a higher order polarization moment (alignment) of Cs atoms is created with a pump laser beam in an anti-relaxation coated Pyrex cell under vacuum, filled with Cs vapor at room temperature. The polarization plane of light passing through the cell is modulated due the precession of the atoms in an external magnetic field of 2.1 μT, used to optically determine the Larmor precession frequency. Operation is based on a sequence of optical pumping and observation of freely precessing spins at a repetition rate of 8 Hz. This free precession decay readout scheme separates optical pumping and probing and, thus, ensures a systematically highly clean measurement. Due to the residual offset of the sensor of <15 pT together with negligible crosstalk of adjacent sensors, this device is uniquely suitable for a variety of experiments in low-energy particle physics with extreme precision, here as a highly stable and systematically clean reference probe in search for time-reversal symmetry violating electric dipole moments.

Abstract:In spin-exchange-relaxation-free (SERF) atomic magnetometers, the attenuation of circularly-polarized pump beam introduces spatial-dependent artificial magnetic fields in atomic spin polarization and light shift. Generally, such a spatial-dependent effective magnetic field, especially prevalent in single-cell magnetometer arrays, cannot be uniformly compensated over the entire excitation region, resulting in a complex distributed compensation mask effect. In addition, any external effective-field-compensation methods inevitably complicate the final analysis of the unknown magnetic field measured. Here, we report a new excitation scheme that can substantially suppress spatial non-uniformity due to pump beam attenuation. Using counter-propagating pump beams with symmetrically red- and blue-detuning-paired frequencies, we demonstrate a significant reduction of spatial inhomogeneity in atomic spin polarization and light shift in comparison with the usual single-frequency uni-direction and counter-propagating pump schemes. Employing this red/blue-detuning-paired pump scheme we construct a single-cell, four-channel SERF magnetometer array with high spatial homogeneity. We demonstrate ~ 10 fT/Hz 1/2 sensitivity in the 5 - 45 Hz band for all four channels, with gradient sensitivity of 2 fT/Hz 1/2 /cm in the same band. This new scheme enables the development of single-vapor-cell, high-uniformity multi-channel magnetic field mapping devices with potential applications in magnetoencephalography and magnetocardiography, or in searching for exotic spin-dependent interactions.
