Abstract:Semiconductor lasers capable of generating a vortex beam with a specific orbital angular momentum (OAM) order are highly attractive for applications ranging from nanoparticle manipulation, imaging and microscopy to fibre and quantum communications. In this work, an electrically pumped OAM laser operating at telecom wavelengths is fabricated by monolithically integrating an optical vortex emitter with a distributed feedback (DFB) laser on the same InGaAsP/InP epitaxial wafer. A single-step dry etching process is adopted to complete the OAM emitter, equipped with specially designed top gratings. The vortex beam emitted by the integrated laser is captured, and its OAM mode purity characterized. The electrically pumped OAM laser eliminates the external laser required by silicon- or silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based OAM emitters, thus demonstrating great potential for applications in communication systems and quantum domain.

Abstract:The ability to rapidly switch between orbital angular momentum modes of light has important implications for future classical and quantum systems. In general, orbital angular momentum beams are generated using free-space bulk optical components where the fastest reconfiguration of such systems is around a millisecond using spatial light modulators. In this work, an extremely compact optical vortex emitter is demonstrated with the ability to actively tune between different orbital angular momentum modes. The emitter is tuned using a single electrically contacted thermo-optical control, maintaining device simplicity and micron scale footprint. On–off keying and orbital angular momentum mode switching are achieved at rates of 10 μs and 20 μs respectively.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has been extensively studied during the past two decades. Till now, it is a formidable challenge to dynamically manipulate OAM in fast switching speed, good beam quality and low power consumption. Here, an alternative strategy is proposed through the combination of the uniformly-aligned ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) and the space-variant photo-patterned nematic liquid crystal. Owing to the excellent electro-optical properties of the adopted FLC, the high-performance electrical switching of OAM, especially, its helicity and the superposed state (i.e., the cylindrical vector beam), can be realized in good quality and high efficiency. The symmetric switching time is down to 120 µs even at a very low driving voltage of 1.7 V/µm. This supplies a practical and universal method towards high-frequency manipulation of OAM and other structured beams.

Abstract:Light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) have important implications for future classical and quantum systems. In many applications, controlled switching of the OAM state at high speed is crucial, while accelerating the switching rate presents a long-standing challenge. Here we present a method for flexibly switching the OAM state of light based on a coherent laser array system. In the system, the output structured light beam is tailored by the coherent combination of array elements. By employing an OAM mode sorting assisted phase control subsystem, which continuously performs the optimization algorithm, the dynamic wavefront distortion of the combined OAM beam could be compensated. Meanwhile, our approach allows one to achieve fast states switching of the combined OAM beam via programming the cost function of the algorithm. The results of Monte-Carlo simulations demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, and the mode purity and power scaling potential of the controllably generated OAM beam are discussed. This theoretical work could be beneficial to the future implementation of rapidly switchable OAM beams at practical output power.

Abstract:Optical vortices have great potentials in optical communications, quantum computations, micro-manipulations and so on. At present, fast switching and reconfiguring of these beam vortices are still challenges. We proposed a blue phase liquid crystal fork grating by applying a vertical electric field with a forked electrode to the polymer stabilized blue phase liquid crystal cell. A fork shaped phase profile with alternation of isotropic and ordinary refractive indices in the lateral direction is thus obtained. Both fork gratings and fork grating array with different topological charges are demonstrated. They permit rapid optical vortex switching and topological charge tuning, and also exhibit excellent polarization independency and high efficiency.

Abstract:An integrated device, which consists of a variable amplitude splitter and an orbital angular momentum (OAM) emitter, is proposed for the superposition of optical vortex beams. With fixed wavelength and power of incident beam, the OAM of the radiated optical superimposed vortex beam can be dynamically tuned. To verify the operating principle, the proposed device has been fabricated on the SOI substrate and experimentally measured. The experimental results confirm the tunability of superimposed vortex beams. Moreover, the ability of independently varying the OAM flux and the geometric distribution of intensity is illustrated and discussed with numerical simulation. We believe that this work would be promising in various applications.
Wavelength Switching and All-Optical Flip-Flop in Tunable V-cavity Laser

Abstract:With the development of intelligent broadband optical networks, tunable semiconductor lasers are becoming more and more important for wavelength routing and signal processing. A simple and compact widely tunable laser has recently been developed using half-wave coupled V-cavity. The size of the chip is only about 500 μm×300 μm, and the fabrication process is similar to a simple Fabry-Perot laser. It does not require any grating or epitaxial regrowth, and the wavelength can be switched from channel to channel using a single electrode control. The wavelength switching time is about 20 μs with current injection induced thermo-optic effect, without requiring any bandgap engineering during the device fabrication. By using quantum well intermixing to selectively blue-shift the bandgap of the waveguide in the tuning section, fast wavelength switching is realized with a response time of ~ 10 ns or less. Optical bistability is also observed in the V-cavity laser, which can be used for achieving all-optical flip-flop. The wavelength state of the V-cavity laser can be set and reset by injecting signal pulses at two different wavelengths. The pulse power for both set and reset signal is only about 1 pJ. Short response times of about 150 ps is measured for the flip-flop operation.

Abstract:We report a fiber optic switch based on a novel MEMS technology allowing fast switch (<2 ms), excellent isolation (>50dB) and wide bandwidth. Each switch module consists of an electromagnetically actuated gold-coated silicon mirror rotating around a 100 mum diameter shaft and a miniature 5V driven coil. Enabling technology is precision EDM machining and laser cutting. The switch is scalable to 8 X 8 and allows the realization of high capacity cross-connects.

Abstract:Due to the nature of infinite dimensionality, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been considered as a new degree of freedom of light and widely expanded the scopes of substantial optical applications such as optical telecommunication, quantum information, particle manipulation and imaging. In recent years, the integrated photonic OAM emitters have been actively investigated due to both compactness and tunability. Essentially, the number of available OAM modes by dynamic switching should be large enough so that the dimensionality of OAM could be explored as much as possible. In this work, an integrated photonic emitter with a wide switching range of OAM modes is theoretically developed, numerically simulated and experimentally verified. The independence of the micro-ring cavity and the scattering unit provides the flexibility to design the device and optimize the performance. Specifically, the dynamic switching of nine OAM modes (l = −4 ~ 4) with azimuthal polarization has been demonstrated by electrically controlled thermo-optic effect.

Abstract:On-chip integrated laser sources of structured light carrying fractional orbital angular momentum (FOAM) are highly desirable for the forefront development of optical communication and quantum information-processing technologies. While integrated vortex beam generators have been previously demonstrated in different optical settings, ultrafast control and sweep of FOAM light with low-power control, suitable for high-speed optical communication and computing, remains challenging. Here we demonstrate fast control of the FOAM from a vortex semiconductor microlaser based on fast transient mixing of integer laser vorticities induced by a control pulse. A continuous FOAM sweep between charge 0 and charge +2 is demonstrated in a 100 ps time window, with the ultimate speed limit being established by the carrier recombination time in the gain medium. Our results provide a new route to generating vortex microlasers carrying FOAM that are switchable at GHz frequencies by an ultrafast control pulse.

Abstract:We report a picosecond and low-power all-optical switch with multiple operating wavelengths in integrated photonic circuits, on-chip-triggered by a control light. The sample configuration combines the advantages of plasmonics and photonics, i.e. plasmonic nanostructures used as core units interconnected by ultralow-loss dielectric slot waveguides. A large nonlinearity enhancement is obtained based on resonant excitation, local field effect, and field enhancement effect, while fast response is maintained by intermolecular energy transfer. A fast response of 63 ps and ultralow control light intensity of 450 kW/cm(2) are achieved.
Rapidly Switchable X-ray Angular Momentum from a Free Electron Laser Oscillator

Abstract:X-ray vortices carrying tunable Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) are an emerging tool for X-ray characterization technology. However, in contrast to the generation of vortex beams in the visible wavelength region, the generation of X-ray vortices in a controlled manner has proved challenging. Here, we overcome this challenge using an X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO), which can produce intense coherent X-rays with switchable OAM. Using the pinhole mirror in an XFELO, this scheme adjusts only the kinetic energy of the electron beam to produce vortex beams that can be programmed to dynamically change between different OAM modes without the need for additional optical elements. With the nominal parameters of currently constructing 1 MHz repetition rate facility (i.e. SHINE), the active formation of the OAM modes of l = ${\pm}$1 and l = ${\pm}$2 and the rapid switching between them by detuning the electron beam energy of the XFELO are numerically illustrated. The real-time switching can be achieved within 200 ${\mu}$s, while the output pulse energy can reach the 100 ${\mu}$J level.

Abstract:Optical vortices are the light beams with orbital angular momentum (OAM), helical phase fronts and azimuthal component of the wave vector. The demand for miniaturization and scalability requires avoiding shortcomings of bulk optics via photonic integration. The integrated OAM emitters are designed to generate and manipulate OAM beams. Photonic integration is compatible with high purity of single mode emission and high efficiency, achieving controllable mode superposition and multiplexing. The potential applications in microscopy, micromanipulation, telecommunications and quantum information are presented and reviewed.

Abstract:The large number of available orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of photons provides a unique resource for many important applications in quantum information and optical communications. However, conventional OAM switching devices usually rely on precise parameter control and are limited by slow switching rate and low efficiency. Here we propose a robust, fast and efficient photonic OAM switch device based on a topological process, where photons are adiabatically pumped to a target OAM state on demand. Such topological OAM pumping can be realized through manipulating photons in a few degenerate main cavities and involves only a limited number of optical elements. A large change of OAM at $\sim 10^{q}$ can be realized with only $q$ degenerate main cavities and at most $5q$ pumping cycles. The topological photonic OAM switch may become a powerful device for broad applications in many different fields and motivate novel topological design of conventional optical devices.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentums (OAMs) of light can be categorized into longitudinal OAM (L-OAM) and transverse OAM (T-OAM). Light carrying time-varying L-OAM, known as self-torqued light, was recently discovered during harmonic generation and has been extensively developed within the context of optical frequency combs (OFCs). Meanwhile, ultrafast bursts of optical pulses, analogous to OFCs, are sought for various light-matter interaction, spectroscopic and nonlinear applications. However, achieving transiently switchable T-OAM of light on request, namely spatiotemporal vortex pulse bursts, with independently controlled spatiotemporal profile of each comb tooth, remain unrealized thus far. In this work, the experimental generation of spatiotemporal vortex bursts featured with controllable time-dependent characteristics is reported. The resultant bursts comprised of spatiotemporal optical vortex comb teeth have picosecond timescale switchable T-OAMs with defined arrangement, manifesting as spatiotemporal torquing of light. We also show ultrafast control of T-OAM chirality, yielding pulse bursts with staggered azimuthal local momentum density, resembling Kármán vortex streets. This approach enables the tailoring of more intricate spatiotemporal wavepacket bursts, such as high-purity modes variation in both radial and azimuthal quantum numbers of spatiotemporal Laguerre-Gaussian wavepackets over time, which may facilitate a host of novel applications in ultrafast light-mater interactions, high-dimensional quantum entanglements, space-time photonic topologies as well as spatiotemporal metrology and photography.

Abstract:All-optical switches are fundamental building blocks for future, high-speed optical networks that utilize optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) techniques to achieve single channel data rates exceeding 100 Gb/s. Interferometric optical switches using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) non-linearities perform efficient optical switching with < 500 fJ of control energy and are approaching optical sampling bandwidths of nearly 1 THz. In this paper, we review work underway at Princeton University to characterize and demonstrate these optical switches as processing elements in practical networks and systems. Three interferometric optical switch geometries are presented and characterized. We discuss limitations on the minimum temporal width of the switching window and prospects for integrating the devices. Using these optical switches as demultiplexers, we demonstrate two 100-Gb/s testbeds for photonic packet switching. In addition to the optical networking applications, we have explored simultaneous wavelength conversion and pulse width management. We have also designed high bandwidth sampling systems using SOA-based optical switches as analog optical sampling gates capable of analyzing optical waveforms with bandwidths exceeding 100 GHz. We believe these devices represent a versatile approach to all-optical processing as a variety of applications can be performed without significantly changing the device architecture.
