Abstract:Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an emerging cross-sectional imaging technology. It uses broadband light sources to achieve axial image resolutions on a few microns scale. In this paper, the principle of Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) wavelength swept laser for swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) is presented and crucial parameters of the laser system are discussed. On analysis of different methods and system configurations, a new configuration of swept laser system is put forward. We theoretically demonstrate a high-speed, broad bandwidth, Fourier domain mode-locked (FDML) wavelength swept laser around 1310 nm for high-resolution frequency domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT). The laser has a fiber ring cavity with a semiconductor optical amplifier gain medium. Intra-cavity mode selection is achieved with an in-fiber tunable fiber Fabry-Perot filter. The laser is designed to generate 32 kHz sweeping rate with a tuning range of 165 nm full width, 3 dB sweep range of 91 nm. In SS-OCT applications the swept laser will achieve about 8.3 μm axial resolution in air and 5.9 μm axial resolution in biological tissue. The instantaneous linewidth is 0.103 nm corresponding to a coherence length of several mm, enabling OCT imaging over a large axial range. The swept laser implemented in the FD-OCT system can provide information of biological tissue imaging in real time.

Abstract:A novel high-speed coherent modulating retro-reflector (MRR) is presented and experimentally demonstrated for free-space optical (FSO) communications by using an in-phase quadrature (IQ) modulator with quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals to break the conventional speed limitation. The transmission performance is tested in a turbulence-tunable atmospheric cell. The received sensitivity is measured to be <14.7 dB PPB, and the power penalty is <2.0 dB for 20 Gbit/s single-channel QPSK signal at the BER of 0.01 when the temperature difference is <250 degrees C. Moreover, this MRR scheme is compatible to wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) technology, and a 60 Gbit/s WDM MRR is demonstrated using three channels with only about 0.6 dB degradation.

Abstract:We report on an ultra-long range optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) using a coherence-enhanced highly linear frequency-swept fiber laser source based on an optoelectronic phase-locked loop (OPLL). The frequency-swept fiber laser is locked to an all-fiber-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) to suppress sweep nonlinearity and enhance the laser coherence, leading to a high coherence linear frequency sweep of 1 GHz in the duration time of 25 ms. This enables the OFDR to realize an ultra-long range measurement with a high spatial resolution. As a result, we obtain a 10 cm transform-limited spatial resolution at a 20 km fiber within 25 ms measurement time, and a 72 cm spatial resolution over an entire 200 km fiber link within 5 ms measurement time. The proposed reflectometry provides a high-performance solution with both high spatial resolution and ultra-long measurement range for field real-time fiber network monitoring and sensing applications.

Abstract:We develop a high-speed tunable, quasi-continuous-wave laser source for frequency domain (FD) optical coherence tomography (our). The laser resonance is realized within a unidirectional all-fiber ring cavity consisting of a fiber coupler, two fiber isolators, a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter (FFP-TF) for frequency tuning. Light output from the coupler is further amplified and spectral shaped by a booster SOA terminated at both ends with two isolators. The developed laser source provides up to 8000 sweeps per second over a full-width wavelength tuning range of 120 nm at center wavelength of 1320 run with an average power of 9 mW, yielding an axial resolution of 13.6 mu m in air and a maximum sensitivity of about 112 dB for OCT imaging. The instantaneous linewidth is about 0.08 nm, enabling OCT imaging over an axial range of 3.4 mm in air. For optimization consideration based on this custom-built swept: laser, experimental study on imaging quality relevant parameters of the swept laser with sine and ramp driving waveforms to the FFP-TF is conducted, and investigation of the swept laser on the cavity length is done. Implementing the laser source in our established swept source based OCT (SS-OCT) system, real-time structural imaging of biological tissue is demonstrated.

Abstract:In this letter, a receiving method for optical orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexed systems (OOFDM) is brought up to reduce the speed requirement of the electrical devices at the receiving end. Based on multiple channels, the speed of the analog-to-digital devices and the size of fast Fourier transform are reduced by the number of channels. An experiment of 10-Gb/s OOFDM is fundamentally demonstrated with a short reach of 100-km standard single-mode fiber. The complexity and tolerance to noise of the algorithm is analyzed.

Abstract:We report on the generation of a highly coherent broadband optical linear frequency sweep (LFS) using mode-spacing swept comb and multi-loop composite optical phase-locked loop (OPLL). We exploit a specially designed agile opto-electronic frequency comb as a sweeping reference, whose mode-spacing is capable of arbitrary frequency sweep while preserving a stable phase and power distribution per mode. By locking a continuous-wave (CW) laser to any of its modes using composite OPLL with a large loop bandwidth, it allows the extraction of the optical LFS at high-order modes in a coherent manner with a multiplied sweep range and rate. With such capability, only intermediate frequency LFS with smaller bandwidth is required to yield a broadband LFS while inheriting the coherence and precision from the comb. We achieve optical LFS of 60 GHz at 6 THz/s sweep rate with a nine-folded sweep bandwidth of the driving signal. Fourier transform-limited spatial resolution at more than 80 times of the intrinsic coherence length of the CW laser is demonstrated in an OFMCW interferometry, verifying the high coherence with more than 4 orders of magnitude improvement in spatial resolution. The characteristics in terms of agility, coherence, and precision are discussed together with the potential limitations. The proposed method is capable of generating arbitrary frequency-modulated optical waveforms with a multiplied bandwidth, showing attractive potential in future metrology applications.

Abstract:In this study, a long-distance optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) with high spatial resolution based on time division multiplexing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Distributed strain sensing with high spatial resolution over long sensing range can be realized by reconfiguring the system layout in a time-division-multiplexed manner by re-routing the measurement signals for segmented processing with extra circulators and couplers only, rather than any other mechanisms for performance improvement of laser source or algorithms for nonlinear errors compensation. Through time-division-multiplexed reconfiguration, the sensing distance is no longer restricted by the path difference of the auxiliary interferometer which is commonly employed in OFDR systems for compensating laser frequency tuning nonlinearity. Compared with the traditional system layout, the proposed system allows distributed measurement with flexible spatial resolutions in each sub-sensing unit without any crosstalk among them. In experiments, distributed strain sensing with spatial resolution up to 5mm is achieved over an active sensing distance of 225m by the proposed system. Furthermore, the spatial resolution flexibility of the proposed system is further verified by successfully obtaining the strain information with 2 mm spatial resolution at the end of a 235-m-long fiber.

Abstract:To meet the constant demands of high-capacity telecommunications infrastructure, data rates beyond 1 terabit per second per wavelength channel and optical multiplexing are widely applied. However, these features pose challenges for existing data acquisition and optical performance monitoring techniques because of bandwidth limitation and signal synchronization. We designed an approach that would address these limitations by optically converting the frequency limit to an unlimited time axis and combining this with a chirped coherent detection to innovatively obtain the full-field spectrum. With this approach, we demonstrated a real-time Fourier-domain optical vector oscilloscope, with a 3.4-terahertz bandwidth and a 280-femtosecond temporal resolution over a 520-picosecond record length. In addition to on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying signals (128 gigabits per second), quadrature phase-shift keying wavelength division–multiplexed signals (4 × 160 gigabits per second) are simultaneously observed. Moreover, we successfully demonstrate some high-precision measurements, which indicate them as a promising scientific and industrial tool in high-speed optical communication and ultrafast optical measurement.

Abstract:A data processing method for correcting the frequency sweeping nonlinearity of a tunable laser in an optical frequency domain reflectometry system is presented. The proposed method calibrates the positions of all the data points by the time-scale factor determined by the zero-crossing points of the auxiliary interferometer. Then, the signal of the main interferometer is interpolated with the calibrated results. In experiments, a spatial resolution of 0.17 mm over a measurable range of 155 m has been obtained even when the optical path difference of the auxiliary interferometer is shorter than that of the main interferometer. This method could resolve the problem that measurable range is limited by the length of delay fiber in the auxiliary interferometer and significantly decrease the requirement of sampling rate.

Abstract:A method based on equal frequency resampling is proposed to suppress laser nonlinear frequency sweeping for the ultimate spatial resolution in optical frequency domain reflectometry. Estimation inaccuracy of the sweeping frequency distribution caused by the finite sampling rate in the auxiliary interferometer can be efficiently compensated by the equal frequency resampling method. With the sweeping range of 130 nm, a 12.1 μm spatial resolution is experimentally obtained. In addition, the sampling limitation of the auxiliary interferometer-based correction is discussed. With a 200 m optical path delay in the auxiliary interferometer, a 21.3 μm spatial resolution is realised at the 191 m fibre end. By employing the proposed resampling and a drawing tower FBG array to enhance the Rayleigh backscattering, a distributed temperature sensing over a 105 m fibre with a sensing resolution of 1 cm is achieved. The measured temperature uncertainty is limited to ±0.15 °C.

Abstract:The passive optical components with very fine structures in wavelength domain are very sensitive to the mechanical vibrations or thermal fluctuations. If the measurement speed is lower than the temperature and mechanical fluctuation, we cannot measure the dynamic characteristics of the optical components. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel method with ultra-fast measurement speed and high-resolution based on optical channel estimation using direct-detected orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DD-OFDM) signal, which can be used to measure the dynamic characteristics and fine structure of the passive optical components. In experiment, by using fast Fourier transform (FFT) and a low-cost electro-absorption modulated laser (EML), we can achieve the transfer function characteristics with 3.9 MHz resolution. Compared with the optical channel estimation using coherent OFDM signal reported before, the proposed measurement technique is cost-effective.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an approach for generating a wideband optical frequency comb (OFC) featuring multiple comb lines and wavelength tunability based on a gain-switched weak-resonant-cavity Fabry–Perot laser diode (WRC-FPLD) under multi-wavelength optical injection. The longitudinal mode interval of the utilized WRC-FPLD is about 0.28 nm (35.0 GHz), and its relaxation oscillation frequency is about 2.0 GHz at 1.15 times the threshold current. Under current modulation with a power of 20.00 dBm and a frequency of 2.0 GHz, the WRC-FPLD is driven into the gain-switched state. By further introducing multi-wavelength injection light (MWIL) containing four power equalization comb lines with an interval of 0.56 nm, a wideband OFC featuring multiple comb lines and wavelength tenability can be obtained. The experimental results demonstrate that by gradually increasing the injection's optical power, the number of produced OFC lines initially increases and then decreases. By meticulously adjusting the wavelengths of the MWIL and carefully selecting the matched injection power, the broadband OFC can be tuned across an extensive spectral range. Under optimized operation parameters, an OFC with 147 lines, and a bandwidth of approximately 292 GHz within a 10 dB amplitude, variation is achieved. In this case, the measured single-sideband phase noise at the fundamental frequency is about −115 dBc/Hz @ 10 kHz, indicating that the comb lines possess good stability and strong coherence.

Abstract:We present an ultrahigh-speed optical coherence tomography (OCT) based on an all-optical swept-source with an A-scan rate of 40 MHz. The inertia-free swept-source, which has its output power of 41.2 mW and tuning range of 40 nm and high scan linearity in wave-number with Pearson's correlation coefficients r of 0.9996, consists of a supercontinuum laser, an optical band-pass filter, a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating, an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, and two buffer stages. With sensitivity of 87 dB, high-speed OCT imaging of biological tissue in vivo is also demonstrated. (C) The Authors.

Abstract:Optical fiber distributed sensing that is based on optical frequency domain reflectometer (OFDR) is a promising technology for achieving a highest spatial resolution downwards to several millimeters. An OFDR signal demodulation method that is based on Morlet wavelet transformation (WT) is demonstrated in detail to improve the resolution of distributed sensing physical quantity under a high spatial resolution, aiming at the trade-off between spatial and spectrum resolution. The spectrum resolution, spatial interval of the measured gauges, and spatial resolution can be manually controlled by adjusting the wavelet parameters. The experimental results that were achieved by the wavelet transformation (WT) method are compared with these by short time Fourier transformation (STFT) method and they indicate that significant improvements, such as strain resolution of 1 με, spatial resolution of 5 mm, average repeatability of 4.3 με, and stability of 7.3 με within one hour, have been achieved. The advantages of this method are high spatial and spectral resolution, robust, and applicability with current OFDR systems.

Abstract:Correcting the nonlinear frequency sweep of the tunable laser source in optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) is critical for accurate measurement. It is common to correct the nonlinear frequency sweep by adding an unbalanced auxiliary interferometer in the OFDR system. However, there is a contradiction between the delay length of the auxiliary interferometer and the correction effect. A short delay length is beneficial for capturing the instantaneous frequency deviation, but it degrades the correction effect due to the low beat frequency. A longer path difference provides more references for the correction, whereas worsens the correction effect due to larger noise. This paper proposes a method introducing an acousto-optic modulator as the frequency shifter in the auxiliary interferometer, which can generate a larger beat frequency with a short delay length. With a matched signal processing method, the contradiction between the delay length and the correction effect is effectively relaxed. This method can be combined with many correction methods to improve their effects further. In experiments, the spatial resolutions and robustness for different correction methods are all improved with the proposed method. It demonstrates a wide-range effect in the promotion of OFDR technique.
