Abstract:A full-polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) hard-in-loop system is constructed in an anechoic chamber. The operation track of SAR is simulated by lateral movement of a scanner. As the core hardware of system, a vector network analyzer is set in the scanner and moved together. Two measured channels are connected with four vertical or horizontal antennas by the expand ports. Then the full-polarization scattering matrixes are gotten with the scanner moving. For processing the stepped-frequency signals in the system, an improved back-projection algorithm is adopted, and four different polarization images are gained. The experiments are carried out on L-band and C-band respectively. The resolution of images after processing is more than 0.2 m, and the images are coincident with the physical characteristic of scene. The results show that the system is feasible to engineering.
Design and implementation of a C-band wide-band 2-dimentional scanning solid-state active phased array antenna

Abstract:A C-band wide-band 2-dimensional scanning solid-state active phased array antenna for airborne synthetic aperture radar(SAR) is designed.Microstrip patch is used and excited by a wide-band dipole.Metal walls and metal grounding screws are used to reduce the mutual couplings between microstrip antenna elements.The measure results indicate that the bandwidth of the antenna exceeds 800 MHz(VSWR<1.6).

Abstract:In this article, a wideband shared-aperture phased array antenna is proposed for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) applications. A metal cavity-backed slot antenna and a slot antenna are used as the L- and X-band antenna elements, respectively. Notably, the X-band antenna elements are mounted on top of the L-band ones, and their interactions are successfully isolated by loading a layer of frequency selective surface (FSS). The FSS layer reflects the electromagnetic waves in X-band and allows transmission of the L-band electromagnetic waves, making the shared-aperture antenna work properly in L- and X-bands. Furthermore, a circular patch is designed to improve the bandwidth of the X-band antenna. Simulations indicate that the proposed antenna has impedance bandwidths of 46% in X-band (7.5–12 GHz) and 21% in L-band (1.7–2.1 GHz). Moreover, the X-band antenna can scan up to ±60° in the E-plane and ±30° in the H-plane with voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) below 3. To verify the design method, a shared-aperture antenna prototype, which consists of $6\times6$ X-band elements and one L-band element, has been fabricated and measured. Finally, the measured results agree well with the simulated ones.
High-Efficiency Broadband Planar Array Antenna with Suspended Microstrip Slab for X-Band SAR Onboard Small Satellites

Abstract:In this paper, a high efficiency broadband planar array antenna is developed at X-band for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) on small satellites. The antenna is based on a multi-layer element structure consisting of two dielectric substrates made of Taconic TLY-5 and three copper layers (i.e., the parasitic patch (top layer), the active patch (middle layer), and the ground plane (bottom layer)). The parasitic patch resides on the bottom surface of the upper TLY-5 substrate while the active patch is printed on the top surface of the lower substrate. A Rohacell foam material is sandwiched between the top layer and the middle layer to separate the two dielectric substrates in order to achieve high directivity, wideband, and to keep the antenna weight to a minimum as required by the SAR satellite application. To satisfy the required size of the antenna panel for the small SAR satellite, an asymmetric corporate feeding network (CFN) is designed to feed a 12 × 16 planar array antenna. However, it was determined that the first corporate feed junction at the center of the CFN, where higher amplitudes of the input signal are located, contributes significantly to the leaky wave emission, which degrades the radiation efficiency and increases the sidelobe level. Thus, a suspended microstrip slab, which is simply a wide and long microstrip line, is designed and positioned on the top layer directly above that feed junction to prevent the leaky waves from radiating. The experimental results of the antenna show good agreement with the simulated ones, achieving an impedance bandwidth of 12.4% from 9.01 to 10.20 GHz and a high gain above 28 dBi. The antenna efficiency estimated from the gain and directivity eclipses 51.34%.

Abstract:For broadband synthetic aperture radar applications, a compact broadband horn array antenna is investigated.Ridged waveguide and square horn are used for broadband operating, and the size of the array element is much smaller than the traditional horn. The measured operating frequencies covered all X-band, more than 40% at centered frequency about 10 GHz. A 4 x 8 array was tested, and the measured results showed that the scan angle can be more than 15 degrees, and the side lobe levels are -12 dB. Abstract:This paper presents empirical results of a novel planar microstrip array antenna based on a simplified composite right/left-handed transmission line (SCRLH-TL) for application in circularly polarized synthetic aperture radar (CP-SAR) systems operated in UHF, L, S, and C-Bands. The array antenna consists of 6 × 6 matrix of spiral-shaped radiating elements that are excited through proximity-coupled, single feed-line. Pattern synthesis technique is used to determine the excitation coefficients (amplitude and phase) to apply to the individual array elements to achieve the required pattern shape. The array antenna has dimensions of 111.5 × 96.06 mm2. The measured impedance bandwidth of the antenna is 3.85 GHz for S11 < −10 dB from 300 MHz to 4.15 GHz, corresponding to a fractional bandwidth of 173%. Maximum gain and radiation efficiency measured are 4.8 dBi and 79.5%, respectively, at 2.40 GHz. The antenna has a 3-dB axial-ratio bandwidth of 3.94 GHz from 144 MHz to 4.66 GHz. The antenna’s beamwidth in azimuth and elevation planes vary between 60° and 120° across its operational frequency range from 300 MHz to 4.15 GHz. The antenna design fulfills the challenging electrical and physical specifications required for CP-SAR employed onboard unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Abstract:To integrate antennas into the curved surface of a mounted platform, a broadband flexible antenna array has been investigated in this letter, which maintains ultra-wideband lower scattering as well. The proposed array features a unique structure, combining two mirror-symmetrical types of metasurface-inspired antenna elements to create a 2 x 2 crossover array. This antenna array effectively reduces radar cross section (RCS) in the ultra-wideband without the need for additional components. Measured results indicate the proposed antenna array achieves a relative operating bandwidth exceeding 84% in both planar and deformed states and with peak gain over 13.3 dBi at 7 GHz. In comparison to a flexible equivalent metallic plane, the proposed antenna array demonstrates a relative 6 dB RCS reduction bandwidth exceeding 100.7% in planar state and over 75% in various deformed states.

Abstract:An 8 × 1-element wideband dual-polarized slot-coupled microstrip antenna array with high isolation and low cross-polarization in X-band is presented. The array antenna offers an impedance bandwidth (VSWR≤2) of 23% and 21% for dual polarization ports, respectively. The measured isolation between two polarization ports is better than 35 dB and the measured cross-polarization level below −25 dB in the main beam over the operation frequency band of 9.35 GHz to 9.75 Ghz. This array is well suitable for X-band SAR (synthetic aperture radar) antenna application.

The measured bandwidth is about 17.8% for voltage standing wave ratios <1.5. The polarization isolation is better than 45 dB. Abstract:In this paper, a broadband antenna array is firstly proposed and analyzed using a combination of characteristic mode analysis (CMA) and the theory of frequency selective surface. The element of the broadband antenna consists of crossed dipoles with end loading. The CMA is used to analyze the underlying modal behaviors and the mode excitation on the proposed antenna structure in order to guide the antenna design. When it obtains the best transmission or radiation performances, it’s configured as an absorber by reciprocity. In order to validate the theoretical solutions, a 10×10 cell prototype is fabricated and measured. The agreement between the simulated and measured results demonstrates the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this letter, a broadband wide-scanning phased array with radar cross-section (RCS) reduction performance is presented. The proposed phased array is composed of two types of antenna elements: Ant-0 and Ant-1. Ant-0 and Ant-1 are the y-polarized dipole antennas that have almost the same radiation performance over the frequency range of 6.5–12 GHz. Ant-1 is obtained by codesigning Ant-0 with a polarization selective metamaterial surface (PSMS), and the PSMS has little effect on the y-polarized radiation performance. As of x-polarized incident waves, the phase difference of the reflected waves on Ant-0 and Ant-1 is around 180° over the frequency range of 3.74–15.1 GHz; thus, a broadband scattering cancelation is achieved. A 5×16 finite array is fabricated and measured, and the measured results show great agreement with the simulated results. The fabricated phased array antenna has the ability to scan to ±60° with active VSWR < 3 over the frequency range of 6.5–12 GHz and over the frequency range of 3.9–15.1 GHz, and ultrabroadband monostatic RCS reduction is achieved.

Abstract:A novel and simple switchable stacked artificial structure (SAS) is proposed and studied in phased arrays to realize a smart integration of broadband radar cross section (RCS) reduction and scanning range expansion. The proposed SAS is composed of a frequency selective surface (FSS) and a metamaterial absorber (MA). The lower part of the SAS can be switched between an FSS and a surface-waveguide (SWG) high-impedance surface (HIS) hybrid structure which can be used for wide-beam antenna design and array mutual coupling reduction. The upper part of the SAS can be seen as an MA. A linear phased array is presented and investigated based on the proposed switchable SAS. When the phased array is switched to its working mode, the SWG-HIS hybrid structure plays an important role to support a wide-angle scan from −75° to +75° with low sidelobes. When the phased array is shut down, the FSS-MA stacked structure can realize a low-RCS design in the frequency range of 0–11.2 GHz. An array prototype which operates at 4.6 GHz is fabricated and measured. The measured results have validated the radiation and scattering performance of the designed phased array.
Shared-aperture S/X Dual-Band Dual-Polarized Microstrip Antenna Array

Abstract:A novel shared-aperture dual-band dual-polarized (DBDP) microstrip antenna array for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at S-and X-bands is introduced. To meet the odd frequency ratio (1:3) of S/X bands, the orthogonal microstrip dipoles and the dual-polarized square patches are employed at S-band and X-band, respectively, while the two-layers configuration is used for both bands to achieve wider bandwidths. The proximately coupled feeds and the probe-fed and aperture-coupled feeds are applied for S-band and X-band, respectively. The antenna array was simulated and designed and two same test arrays are fabricated. The simulated results are good agreement with the measured ones. The measured impedance bandwidth (VSWR ≤ 2) of the test array reaches 8.9% and 17% for S-and X-bands, respectively, and the measured isolation between polarizations for both bands is better than 20dB. The measured cross-polarization levels are ≤ -26dB for the S-band and ≤ -31dB for the X-band. This work verifies the practicability of this type of dual-band dual-polarized microstrip antenna arrays with the odd frequency ratio, which will be instructive for the future SAR applications of this type of DBDP microstrip antenna arrays.

Abstract:Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) based on satellites and or space vehicles as motion platform has the capability to work under all weather conditions, day and nights, and has become an indispensable mean for earth observation. At present, the large-scale phased array antenna, such as the active microstrip-phased array antenna of SIR-C imaging radar and the waveguide slot-phased array antenna of Radarsat-1 imaging radar, is one of the core components of spaceborne SAR and determines the system performance to a large extent. Although the traditional antenna array scheme has been widely used in existing spaceborne SAR systems due to strong beam control ability, sufficient failure redundancy backup, mature design method and so on, it still has drawbacks, for example, large volume, high weight and manufacturing cost, and low energy utilization rate, which restrict the further improvement of performance and are burdens on the research of next-generation high-performance spaceborne SAR system. With the development of electric and electronic techniques, forthcoming SAR array-phased array antennas will make breakthroughs in antenna architectures, concepts, technologies and modes, for instance, periodic reflector array antennas and metamaterial array antennas. This chapter focuses on the present and forthcoming development of spaceborne SAR antenna arrays.
An Integrated Antenna Array With Broadband, Low-RCS, and High-Gain Characteristics

Abstract:This communication presents an integrated structure of broadband low radar cross section (RCS) high-gain antenna array based on the frequency selective absorber (FSA), with significant electromagnetic reduction and antenna radiation functions. The FSA in the integrated structure consists of two layers, with the upper layer resistor and the lower layer grounded metal patch separated by an air layer. The bottom metal patch can also serve as an antenna radiator, and the structure area does not cause an additional increase in scattering RCS. By adjusting the shape and size of the bottom patch, a chessboard configuration low-RCS antenna array can be designed to achieve radiation and diffuse scattering functions. Broadband low-RCS antenna arrays exhibit excellent radiation performances by loading the feeding network, and in the stealthy receiving state, combined with the absorber function, antenna arrays can achieve both in-band and out-of-band broadband RCS reduction (RCSR). A integrated structure is processed and tested, and the functionality of the designed broadband low-RCS antenna array is verified. Simulation and experimental results show that the broadband low-RCS antenna array achieves a realized gain of 14.9 dBi at 5.3 GHz and obtains a monostatic RCSR greater than 10 dB for x and y polarization under normal incidence in the range of 3.15–8.75 GHz.

Abstract:This is a feasibility study for developing low-cost synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems based on the IEEE 802.11ac protocol. The baseband module of IEEE 802.11ac is found to be similar to SAR, and its frequency coverage is wide enough to meet the requirement of high-resolution SAR imaging. By using the subbands merging technique, the spatial resolution can reach 0.5 m × 0.5 m.

Abstract:The next generation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems will need transmit and receive analog signals over a wide frequency range with large bandwidth to fulfil the increasing demands. Since the performance of the digital microwave component is deteriorated at increasing frequency, radio frequency (RF) front-end with the capability of frequency conversion is needed for frequency beyond a few gigahertz. However, for the widely employed RF mixers, the inherent imperfect of I-V characteristics of nonlinear devices, generates many undesired mixing spurs which restricts on the instantaneous bandwidth and the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). At Aerospace Information Research Institute Chinese Academy of Sciences, a photonic-assisted front-end with functions of signal generation and deramp processing has been conceived and implemented in an experimental deramp-on-receive CW SAR system. The system is called PFDIR (Photonic-Assisted Front-End Deramp-on-Receive Imaging Radar) and is envisaged to obtain SAR imaging at high resolution. In current stage, the Ku-band system with a bandwidth of 5.72 GHz, corresponding to a relative bandwidth of 37.8%, operates well with a fixed two-horn antenna. The configuration of the photonic front-end and the system design are described. Ground-based tests and airborne imaging results with geometrical resolution down to 5 cm are presented.

Abstract:To overcome the inherent limitation between high azimuth resolution and wide swath in the conventional one-channel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, a large receiving planner antenna, which is split into multiple subapertures in both azimuth and elevation, is usually adopted. However, such a system has high system implementation complexity and requires azimuth signal reconstruction under nonuniform sampling condition. To reduce the complexity of the SAR system and processing algorithm, a reflector antenna is adopted in the spaceborne multichannel SAR system presented in this letter for high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) imaging. According to the special characteristics of reflector antenna, a modified single-phase-center (SPC) technique is presented. The system configuration and imaging scheme are described in detail. A typical spaceborne SAR example with a reflector antenna for HRWS imaging is designed, and its performances are analyzed. Simulation results denote that the presented SAR system shows satisfactory performances with lower data rate, system load, and implementation complexity.
Investigation of SAR array antenna beam broadening based on beam pattern space

Abstract:In the antenna design process of synthesized aperture radar(SAR) system,it is difficult to get wide beam and uniform irradiating amplitude,and not flexible to change beam pattern.A design method of SAR array antenna beam broadening based on beam pattern space was given out.The planner array antenna is divided into many sub arrays,and then the preliminary beam pattern is designed from sub array;after amplitude and phase being weighted,each sub array has the same beam pattern and added together with space shift to perform the desired covered region pattern in same phase.For the process is based on sub array,it only needs to consider the weighty of sub array.The results greatly decrease the amount of manifold vectors.This novelty makes it easy to design variable beam pattern,control beam direction and suppress interference.The simulation results verified the correctness and validity.This method can be used in the new concept SAR system as single input with multiple output(SIMO) or multiple input with multiple output(MIMO) SAR.

Abstract:Airborne or spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) targeted for micro-unmanned aerial vehicles (UaV) or micro-satellites is capable of observing large area under all weather conditions with strong penetration, and finds many emerging applications in defence, geology, oceanography, agriculture and other areas [1]. Phased-array SAR, operating in three modes of spotlight, stripmap and scanSAR, can significantly improve the spatial resolution and detection SNR by steering the beams to the targets. The existing SAR system is still constrained by power, size, and performance for payload in micro-UAVs/micro-satellites. This paper describes the development of an X-band phased-array radar TRX IC achieving a power of 253mW/channel, and resolution of <;30cm, with a die size of 7.8mm 2 .
