Abstract:An infinite set is orbit-finite if, up to permutations of the underlying structure of atoms, it has only finitely many elements. We study a generalisation of linear programming where constraints are expressed by an orbit-finite system of linear inequalities. As our principal contribution we provide a decision procedure for checking if such a system has a real solution, and for computing the minimal/maximal value of a linear objective function over the solution set. We also show undecidability of these problems in case when only integer solutions are considered. Therefore orbit-finite linear programming is decidable, while orbit-finite integer linear programming is not.

Consistency of P-time event graphs is decidable in polynomial time (extended version)

Abstract:P-time event graphs are discrete event systems able to model cyclic production systems where tasks need to be performed within given time windows. Consistency is the property of admitting an infinite execution of such tasks that does not violate any temporal constraints. In this paper, we solve the long-standing problem of characterizing the decidability of consistency by showing that, assuming unary encoding of the initial marking, this property can be verified in strongly polynomial time. The proof is based on a reduction to the problem of detecting paths with infinite weight in infinite weighted digraphs called N-periodic graphs.

Abstract:In this paper we study the periodic orbits of a class of 2 n -dimensional control dynamical systems with a perturbation of continuous piecewise smooth quadratic polynomial and a perturbation of discontinuous piecewise smooth polynomial of an arbitrarily given degree, respectively. By applying the averaging theory for continuous and discontinuous piecewise smooth systems, the number of isolated zeros of the averaging function can be determined, which provides a lower bound of the maximum number of isolated periodic orbits. At last, we give examples to show that the lower bound of the maximum number is accessible by the properties of algebraic closure and transcendental extension.

Abstract:In [GTZ08, GTZ12], the following result was established: given polynomials $f,g\in\mathbb{C}[x]$ of degrees larger than $1$, if there exist $\alpha,\beta\in\mathbb{C}$ such that their corresponding orbits $\mathcal{O}_f(\alpha)$ and $\mathcal{O}_g(\beta)$ (under the action of $f$, respectively of $g$) intersect in infinitely many points, then $f$ and $g$ must share a common iterate, i.e., $f^m=g^n$ for some $m,n\in\mathbb{N}$. If one replaces $\mathbb{C}$ with a field $K$ of characteristic $p$, then the conclusion fails; we provide numerous examples showing the complexity of the problem over a field of positive characteristic. We advance a modified conjecture regarding polynomials $f$ and $g$ which admit two orbits with infinite intersection over a field of characteristic $p$. Then we present various partial results, along with connections with another deep conjecture in the area, the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture.

Deciding subspace reachability problems with application to Skolem's Problem

Abstract:The higher-dimensional version of Kannan and Lipton's Orbit Problem asks whether it is decidable if a target vector space can be reached from a starting point under repeated application of a linear transformation. This problem has remained open since its formulation, and in fact generalizes Skolem's Problem -- a long-standing open problem concerning the existence of zeros in linear recurrence sequences. Both problems have traditionally been studied using algebraic and number theoretic machinery. In contrast, this paper reduces the Orbit Problem to an equivalent version in real projective space, introducing a basic geometric reference for examining and deciding problem instances. We find this geometric toolkit enables basic proofs of sweeping assertions concerning the decidability of certain problem classes, including results where the only other known proofs rely on sophisticated number-theoretic arguments.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a polynomial with integer coefficients whose degree is at least 2. We consider the problem of covering the orbit $\operatorname{Orb}_f(t)=\{t,f(t),f(f(t)),\cdots\}$, where $t$ is an integer, using arithmetic progressions each of which contains $t$. Fixing an integer $k\ge 2$, we prove that it is impossible to cover $\operatorname{Orb}_f(t)$ using $k$ such arithmetic progressions unless $\operatorname{Orb}_f(t)$ is contained in one of these progressions. In fact, we show that the relative density of terms covered by $k$ such arithmetic progressions in $\operatorname{Orb}_f(t)$ is uniformly bounded from above by a bound that depends solely on $k$. In addition, the latter relative density can be made as close as desired to $1$ by an appropriate choice of $k$ arithmetic progressions containing $t$ if $k$ is allowed to be large enough.

Abstract:We extend the definition of an orbit portrait to the context of non-autonomous iteration, both for the combinatorial version involving collections of angles and for the dynamic version involving external rays where combinatorial portraits can be realized by the dynamics associated with sequences of polynomials with suitably uniformly bounded degrees and coefficients. We show that, in the case of sequences of polynomials of constant degree, the portraits which arise are eventually periodic which is somewhat similar to the classical theory of polynomial iteration. However, if the degrees of the polynomials in the sequence are allowed to vary, one can obtain portraits with complementary arcs of irrational length which are fundamentally different from the classical ones.

A Categorical Interpretation of Continuous Orbit Equivalence for Partial Dynamical Systems

Abstract:We define the orbit morphism of partial dynamical systems and prove that an orbit morphism being an isomorphism in the category of partial dynamical systems and orbit morphisms is equivalent to the existence of a continuous orbit equivalence between the given partial dynamical systems that preserves the essential stabilisers. We show that this is equivalent to the existence of a diagonal-preserving isomorphism between the corresponding crossed products when the essential stabilisers of partial actions are torsion-free and abelian. We also characterize when an étale groupoid is isomorphic to the transformation groupoid of some partial action. Additionally, we explore the implications in the context of semi-saturated orthogonal partial dynamical systems over free groups, establishing connections with Deaconu-Renault systems and the concept of eventual conjugacy. Finally, we apply our results to C*-algebras associated with generalized Boolean dynamical systems.

Abstract:We prove that the Brinkmann Problems (BrP & BrCP) and the twisted-conjugacy Problem (TCP) are decidable for any endomorphism of a free-abelian times free (FATF) group Fn x Z^m. Furthermore, we prove the decidability of the two-sided Brinkmann conjugacy problem (2BrCP) for monomorphisms of FATF groups (and combine it with TCP) to derive the decidability of the conjugacy problem for ascending HNN extensions of FATF groups.

Abstract:Consider a following NP-problem DOUBLE CLIQUE (abbr.: CLIQ$_{2}$): Given a natural number $k>2$ and a pair of two disjoint subgraphs of a fixed graph $G$ decide whether each subgraph in question contains a $k$-clique. I prove that CLIQ$_{2}$ can't be solved in polynomial time by a deterministic TM, which infers $\mathbf{P}\neq \mathbf{NP}$. This proof upgrades the well-known proof of polynomial unsolvability of the partial result with respect to analogous monotone problem CLIQUE (abbr.: CLIQ) as well as my previous presentation that used appropriate 3-value semantics. Note that problem CLIQ$_{2}$ is not monotone and appears more complex than just iterated CLIQ, as the required subgraphs are mutually dependent.

Abstract:Many natural computational problems in computer science, mathematics, physics, and other sciences amount to deciding if two objects are equivalent. Often this equivalence is defined in terms of group actions. A natural question is to ask when two objects can be distinguished by polynomial functions that are invariant under the group action. For finite groups, this is the usual notion of equivalence, but for continuous groups like the general linear groups it gives rise to a new notion, called orbit closure intersection. It captures, among others, the graph isomorphism problem, noncommutative PIT, null cone problems in invariant theory, equivalence problems for tensor networks, and the classification of multiparty quantum states. Despite recent algorithmic progress in celebrated special cases, the computational complexity of general orbit closure intersection problems is currently quite unclear. In particular, tensors seem to give rise to the most difficult problems. In this work we start a systematic study of orbit closure intersection from the complexity-theoretic viewpoint. To this end, we define a complexity class TOCI that captures the power of orbit closure intersection problems for general tensor actions, give an appropriate notion of algebraic reductions that imply polynomial-time reductions in the usual sense, but are amenable to invariant-theoretic techniques, identify natural tensor problems that are complete for TOCI, including the equivalence of 2D tensor networks with constant physical dimension, and show that the graph isomorphism problem can be reduced to these complete problems, hence GI$\subseteq$TOCI. As such, our work establishes the first lower bound on the computational complexity of orbit closure intersection problems, and it explains the difficulty of finding unconditional polynomial-time algorithms beyond special cases, as has been observed in the literature.

Abstract:We study the property of uniform discreteness within discrete orbits of non-uniform lattices in $SL_2(\mathbb{R})$, acting on $\mathbb{R}^2$ by linear transformations. We provide quantitative consequences of previous results by using Diophantine properties. We give a partial result toward a conjecture of Lelièvre regarding the set of long cylinder holonomy vectors of the "golden L" translation surface: for any $\epsilon>0$, three points of this set can be found on a horizontal line within a distance of $\epsilon$ of each other.

Parity Games on Temporal Graphs

Abstract:Temporal graphs are a popular modelling mechanism for dynamic complex systems that extend ordinary graphs with discrete time. Simply put, time progresses one unit per step and the availability of edges can change with time. We consider the complexity of solving $\omega$-regular games played on temporal graphs where the edge availability is ultimately periodic and fixed a priori. We show that solving parity games on temporal graphs is decidable in PSPACE, only assuming the edge predicate itself is in PSPACE. A matching lower bound already holds for what we call punctual reachability games on static graphs, where one player wants to reach the target at a given, binary encoded, point in time. We further study syntactic restrictions that imply more efficient procedures. In particular, if the edge predicate is in $P$ and is monotonically increasing for one player and decreasing for the other, then the complexity of solving games is only polynomially increased compared to static graphs.

Abstract:We classify the pairs of polynomials $f,g \in \mathbb{C}[X]$ having orbits satisfying infinitely many multiplicative dependence relations, extending a result of Ghioca, Tucker and Zieve. Moreover, we show that given $f_1,\ldots, f_n$ from a certain class of polynomials with integer coefficients, the vectors of indices $(m_1,\ldots,m_n)$ such that $f_1^{m_1}(0),\ldots,f_n^{m_n}(0)$ are multiplictively dependent are sparse. We also classify the pairs $f,g \in \mathbb{Q}[X]$ such that there are infinitely many $(x,y) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ satisfying $f(x)^k=g(y)^\ell$ for some (possibly varying) non-zero integers $k,\ell$.

Approximate Control for Continuous-Time POMDPs

Abstract:This work proposes a decision-making framework for partially observable systems in continuous time with discrete state and action spaces. As optimal decision-making becomes intractable for large state spaces we employ approximation methods for the filtering and the control problem that scale well with an increasing number of states. Specifically, we approximate the high-dimensional filtering distribution by projecting it onto a parametric family of distributions, and integrate it into a control heuristic based on the fully observable system to obtain a scalable policy. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on several partially observed systems, including queueing systems and chemical reaction networks.

Abstract:Assume that the problem P0 is not solvable in polynomial time. Let T be a first-order theory containing a sufficiently rich part of true arithmetic. We characterize T∪{ConT} as the minimal extension of T proving for some algorithm that it decides P0 as fast as any algorithm B with the property that T proves that B decides P0. Here, ConT claims the consistency of T. As a byproduct, we obtain a version of Gödelʼs Second Incompleteness Theorem. Abstract:For symbolic dynamics with some mild conditions, we solve the lowering topological entropy problem for subsystems and determine the Hausdorff dimension of the level set with given complexity, where the complexity is represented by Hausdorff dimension of orbit closure. These results can be applied to some dynamical systems such as $\beta$-transformations, conformal expanding repeller, etc. We also determine the dimension of the Furstenberg level set, which is related to a problem of Furstenberg on the orbits under two multiplicatively independent maps.
