Abstract:We study the quantum-classical polynomial hierarchy, QCPH, which is the class of languages solvable by a constant number of alternating classical quantifiers followed by a quantum verifier. Our main result is that QCPH is infinite relative to a random oracle (previously, this was not even known relative to any oracle). We further prove that higher levels of PH are not contained in lower levels of QCPH relative to a random oracle; this is a strengthening of the somewhat recent result that PH is infinite relative to a random oracle (Rossman, Servedio, and Tan 2016). The oracle separation requires lower bounding a certain type of low-depth alternating circuit with some quantum gates. To establish this, we give a new switching lemma for quantum algorithms which may be of independent interest. Our lemma says that for any $d$, if we apply a random restriction to a function $f$ with quantum query complexity $\mathrm{Q}(f)\le n^{1/3}$, the restricted function becomes exponentially close (in terms of $d$) to a depth-$d$ decision tree. Our switching lemma works even in a "worst-case" sense, in that only the indices to be restricted are random; the values they are restricted to are chosen adversarially. Moreover, the switching lemma also works for polynomial degree in place of quantum query complexity.

Oracle Separation between Noisy Quantum Polynomial Time and the Polynomial Hierarchy

Abstract:This work investigates the oracle separation between the physically motivated complexity class of noisy quantum circuits, inspired by definitions such as those presented by Chen, Cotler, Huang, and Li (2022). We establish that with a constant error rate, separation can be achieved in terms of NP. When the error rate is $\Omega(\log n/n)$, we can extend this result to the separation of PH. Notably, our oracles, in all separations, do not necessitate error correction schemes or fault tolerance, as all quantum circuits are of constant depth. This indicates that even quantum computers with minor errors, without error correction, may surpass classical complexity classes under various scenarios and assumptions. We also explore various common noise settings and present new classical hardness results, generalizing those found in studies by Raz and Tal (2022) and Bassirian, Bouland, Fefferman, Gunn, and Tal (2021), which are of independent interest.

Abstract:Bennett and Gill [1981] showed that P A ≠ NP A ≠ coNP A for a random oracle A , with probability 1. We investigate whether this result extends to individual polynomial-time random oracles. We consider two notions of random oracles: p-random oracles in the sense of martingales and resource-bounded measure [Lutz 1992; Ambos-Spies et al. 1997], and p-betting-game random oracles using the betting games generalization of resource-bounded measure [Buhrman et al. 2000]. Every p-betting-game random oracle is also p-random; whether the two notions are equivalent is an open problem. (1) We first show that P A ≠ NP A for every oracle A that is p-betting-game random. Ideally, we would extend (1) to p-random oracles. We show that answering this either way would imply an unrelativized complexity class separation: (2) If P A ≠ NP A relative to every p-random oracle A , then BPP ≠ EXP. (3) If P A ≠ NP A relative to some p-random oracle A , then P ≠ PSPACE. Rossman, Servedio, and Tan [2015] showed that the polynomial-time hierarchy is infinite relative to a random oracle, solving a longstanding open problem. We consider whether we can extend (1) to show that PH A is infinite relative to oracles A that are p-betting-game random. Showing that PH A separates at even its first level would also imply an unrelativized complexity class separation: (4) If NP A ≠ coNP A for a p-betting-game measure 1 class of oracles A , then NP ≠ EXP. (5) If PH A is infinite relative to every p-random oracle A , then PH ≠ EXP. We also consider random oracles for time versus space, for example: (6) L A ≠ P A relative to every oracle A that is p-betting-game random.
An optimal oracle separation of classical and quantum hybrid schemes

Abstract:Recently, Chia, Chung and Lai (STOC 2020) and Coudron and Menda (STOC 2020) have shown that there exists an oracle $\mathcal{O}$ such that $\mathsf{BQP}^\mathcal{O} \neq (\mathsf{BPP^{BQNC}})^\mathcal{O} \cup (\mathsf{BQNC^{BPP}})^\mathcal{O}$. In fact, Chia et al. proved a stronger statement: for any depth parameter $d$, there exists an oracle that separates quantum depth $d$ and $2d+1$, when polynomial-time classical computation is allowed. This implies that relative to an oracle, doubling quantum depth gives classical and quantum hybrid schemes more computational power. In this paper, we show that for any depth parameter $d$, there exists an oracle that separates quantum depth $d$ and $d+1$, when polynomial-time classical computation is allowed. This gives an optimal oracle separation of classical and quantum hybrid schemes. To prove our result, we consider $d$-Bijective Shuffling Simon's Problem (which is a variant of $d$-Shuffling Simon's Problem considered by Chia et al.) and an oracle inspired by an "in-place" permutation oracle.

Computations with polynomial evaluation oracle: ruling out superlinear SETH-based lower bounds

Abstract:The field of fine-grained complexity aims at proving conditional lower bounds on the time complexity of computational problems. One of the most popular assumptions, Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH), implies that SAT cannot be solved in $2^{(1-\epsilon)n}$ time. In recent years, it has been proved that known algorithms for many problems are optimal under SETH. Despite the wide applicability of SETH, for many problems, there are no known SETH-based lower bounds, so the quest for new reductions continues. Two barriers for proving SETH-based lower bounds are known. Carmosino et al. (ITCS 2016) introduced the Nondeterministic Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (NSETH) stating that TAUT cannot be solved in time $2^{(1-\epsilon)n}$ even if one allows nondeterminism. They used this hypothesis to show that some natural fine-grained reductions would be difficult to obtain: proving that, say, 3-SUM requires time $n^{1.5+\epsilon}$ under SETH, breaks NSETH and this, in turn, implies strong circuit lower bounds. Recently, Belova et al. (SODA 2023) introduced the so-called polynomial formulations to show that for many NP-hard problems, proving any explicit exponential lower bound under SETH also implies strong circuit lower bounds. We prove that for a range of problems from P, including $k$-SUM and triangle detection, proving superlinear lower bounds under SETH is challenging as it implies new circuit lower bounds. To this end, we show that these problems can be solved in nearly linear time with oracle calls to evaluating a polynomial of constant degree. Then, we introduce a strengthening of SETH stating that solving SAT in time $2^{(1-\varepsilon)n}$ is difficult even if one has constant degree polynomial evaluation oracle calls. This hypothesis is stronger and less believable than SETH, but refuting it is still challenging: we show that this implies circuit lower bounds.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to resolve several open problems in the current literature on Boolean circuits, communication complexity, and hashing functions. These lower bound results share the common feature that their proofs utilize probabilistic arguments in an essential way. Specifically, we prove that, to compute the majority function of n Boolean variables, the size of any depth-3 monotone circuit must be greater than 2nε, and the size of any width-2 branching program must have super-polynomial growth. We also show that, for the problem of deciding whether i ≤ j for two n-bit integers i and j, the probabilistic ε-error one-way communication complexity is of order θ(n), while the two-way ε-error complexity is O((log n)2). We will also prove that, to compute i Â¿ j mod p for an n-bit prime p, the probabilistic ε-error two-way communication complexity is of order θ(n). Finally, we prove a conjecture of Ullman that uniform hashing is asymptotically optimal in its expected retrieval cost among open address hashing schemes.

Abstract:The Polynomial-Time Hierarchy ($\mathsf{PH}$) is a staple of classical complexity theory, with applications spanning randomized computation to circuit lower bounds to ''quantum advantage'' analyses for near-term quantum computers. Quantumly, however, despite the fact that at least \emph{four} definitions of quantum $\mathsf{PH}$ exist, it has been challenging to prove analogues for these of even basic facts from $\mathsf{PH}$. This work studies three quantum-verifier based generalizations of $\mathsf{PH}$, two of which are from [Gharibian, Santha, Sikora, Sundaram, Yirka, 2022] and use classical strings ($\mathsf{QCPH}$) and quantum mixed states ($\mathsf{QPH}$) as proofs, and one of which is new to this work, utilizing quantum pure states ($\mathsf{pureQPH}$) as proofs. We first resolve several open problems from [GSSSY22], including a collapse theorem and a Karp-Lipton theorem for $\mathsf{QCPH}$. Then, for our new class $\mathsf{pureQPH}$, we show one-sided error reduction for $\mathsf{pureQPH}$, as well as the first bounds relating these quantum variants of $\mathsf{PH}$, namely $\mathsf{QCPH}\subseteq \mathsf{pureQPH} \subseteq \mathsf{EXP}^{\mathsf{PP}}$.

Abstract:We establish connections between the size of circuits and formulas computing monotone Boolean functions and the size of first-order and nonrecursive Datalog rewritings for conjunctive queries over OWL 2 QL ontologies. We use known lower bounds and separation results from circuit complexity to prove similar results for the size of rewritings that do not use non-signature constants. For example, we show that, in the worst case, positive existential and nonrecursive Datalog rewritings are exponentially longer than the original queries; nonrecursive Datalog rewritings are in general exponentially more succinct than positive existential rewritings; while first-order rewritings can be superpolynomially more succinct than positive existential rewritings.

Separation of AC$^0[\oplus]$ Formulas and Circuits

Abstract:This paper gives the first separation between the power of {\em formulas} and {\em circuits} of equal depth in the $\mathrm{AC}^0[\oplus]$ basis (unbounded fan-in AND, OR, NOT and MOD$_2$ gates). We show, for all $d(n) \le O(\frac{\log n}{\log\log n})$, that there exist {\em polynomial-size depth-$d$ circuits} that are not equivalent to {\em depth-$d$ formulas of size $n^{o(d)}$} (moreover, this is optimal in that $n^{o(d)}$ cannot be improved to $n^{O(d)}$). This result is obtained by a combination of new lower and upper bounds for {\em Approximate Majorities}, the class of Boolean functions $\{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}$ that agree with the Majority function on $3/4$ fraction of inputs. $\mathrm{AC}^0[\oplus]$ formula lower bound: We show that every depth-$d$ $\mathrm{AC}^0[\oplus]$ formula of size $s$ has a {\em $1/8$-error polynomial approximation} over $\mathbb{F}_2$ of degree $O(\frac{1}{d}\log s)^{d-1}$. This strengthens a classic $O(\log s)^{d-1}$ degree approximation for \underline{circuits} due to Razborov. Since the Majority function has approximate degree $\Theta(\sqrt n)$, this result implies an $\exp(\Omega(dn^{1/2(d-1)}))$ lower bound on the depth-$d$ $\mathrm{AC}^0[\oplus]$ formula size of all Approximate Majority functions for all $d(n) \le O(\log n)$. Monotone $\mathrm{AC}^0$ circuit upper bound: For all $d(n) \le O(\frac{\log n}{\log\log n})$, we give a randomized construction of depth-$d$ monotone $\mathrm{AC}^0$ circuits (without NOT or MOD$_2$ gates) of size $\exp(O(n^{1/2(d-1)}))$ that compute an Approximate Majority function. This strengthens a construction of \underline{formulas} of size $\exp(O(dn^{1/2(d-1)}))$ due to Amano.

Abstract:The arithmetical hierarchy (AH) is similar to the polynomial hierarchy (PH). Unlike the PH, the AH does not collapse relative to any oracle. A language in the (k + 1)-st level of the AH is computable enumerable (c.e.) relative to the kth level. So, given an oracle in the kth level of the AH, we could use a black-box search to decide whether the input word is in the language. With very large padding arguments, i.e. the paddings grow faster than any relative to the level k of the AH computable function, we would construct a language contained in the k + 1 level of PH, if we use only a finite set of input words. From the oracle in AH, we would construct an analogue oracle at the kth level of PH. For the input words of the finite set, a word is in the language of AH, if and only if it is in the language of PH. And the input word is in the oracle set of AH, if and only if it is in the oracle of PH. As in the language of AH, we must apply a black-box search in the language of PH. So, we would also have exponentially many oracle queries in the language of PH. The PH does not collapse.

Abstract:We present a constructive method to create quantum circuits that implement oracles $|x\rangle|y\rangle|0\rangle^k \mapsto |x\rangle|y \oplus f(x)\rangle|0\rangle^k$ for $n$-variable Boolean functions $f$ with low $T$-count. In our method $f$ is given as a 2-regular Boolean logic network over the gate basis $\{\land, \oplus, 1\}$. Our construction leads to circuits with a $T$-count that is at most four times the number of AND nodes in the network. In addition, we propose a SAT-based method that allows us to trade qubits for $T$ gates, and explore the space/complexity trade-off of quantum circuits. Our constructive method suggests a new upper bound for the number of $T$ gates and ancilla qubits based on the multiplicative complexity $c_\land(f)$ of the oracle function $f$, which is the minimum number of AND gates that is required to realize $f$ over the gate basis $\{\land, \oplus, 1\}$. There exists a quantum circuit computing $f$ with at most $4 c_\land(f)$ $T$ gates using $k = c_\land(f)$ ancillae. Results known for the multiplicative complexity of Boolean functions can be transferred. We verify our method by comparing it to different state-of-the-art compilers. Finally, we present our synthesis results for Boolean functions used in quantum cryptoanalysis.

Abstract:We introduce the polynomial coefficient matrix and identify maximum rank of this matrix under variable substitution as a complexity measure for multivariate polynomials. We use our techniques to prove super-polynomial lower bounds against several classes of non-multilinear arithmetic circuits. In particular, we obtain the following results : As our main result, we prove that any homogeneous depth-3 circuit for computing the product of $d$ matrices of dimension $n \times n$ requires $\Omega(n^{d-1}/2^d)$ size. This improves the lower bounds by Nisan and Wigderson(1995) when $d=\omega(1)$. There is an explicit polynomial on $n$ variables and degree at most $\frac{n}{2}$ for which any depth-3 circuit $C$ of product dimension at most $\frac{n}{10}$ (dimension of the space of affine forms feeding into each product gate) requires size $2^{\Omega(n)}$. This generalizes the lower bounds against diagonal circuits proved by Saxena(2007). Diagonal circuits are of product dimension 1. We prove a $n^{\Omega(\log n)}$ lower bound on the size of product-sparse formulas. By definition, any multilinear formula is a product-sparse formula. Thus, our result extends the known super-polynomial lower bounds on the size of multilinear formulas by Raz(2006). We prove a $2^{\Omega(n)}$ lower bound on the size of partitioned arithmetic branching programs. This result extends the known exponential lower bound on the size of ordered arithmetic branching programs given by Jansen(2008).

Deriving Nonuniform Lower Bounds from Uniform Nondeterministic Lower Bounds

Abstract:Proving complexity lower bounds remains a challenging task: currently, we only know how to prove conditional uniform (algorithm) lower bounds and nonuniform (circuit) lower bounds in restricted circuit models. About a decade ago, Williams (STOC 2010) showed how to derive nonuniform lower bounds from uniform \emph{upper} bounds. Since then, a number of results of this kind have been proved. For example, Jahanjou et al. (ICALP 2015) and Carmosino et al. (ITCS 2016) proved that if NSETH fails, then $\text{E}^{\text{NP}}$ has circuit size $\omega(n)$. Just recently, it was shown how uniform \emph{lower} bounds can be used to derive nonuniform lower bounds: Belova et al. (SODA 2024) showed that if MAX-3-SAT cannot be solved in co-nondeterministic time $O(2^{(1 - \varepsilon)n})$, then there exists an explicit polynomial family of high arithmetic circuit size; Williams (FOCS 2024) showed that if NSETH is true, then Boolean Inner Product requires large $\text{ETHR} \circ \text{ETHR}$ circuits. In this paper, we continue developing this line of research and show that nondeterministic uniform lower bounds imply nonuniform lower bounds for various types of objects that are notoriously hard to analyze: circuits, matrix rigidity, and tensor rank. Specifically, we prove that if NSETH is true, then there exists a monotone Boolean function family in coNP of monotone circuit size $2^{\Omega(n / \log n)}$. Combining this with the result above, we get win-win circuit lower bounds: either $\text{E}^{\text{NP}}$ requires circuits of size $w(n)$ or coNP requires monotone circuits of size $2^{\Omega(n / \log n)}$. We also prove that MAX-3-SAT cannot be solved in co-nondeterministic time $O(2^{(1 - \varepsilon)n})$, then there exist small explicit families of high rigidity matrices and high rank tensors.

Abstract:One of the major open problems in complexity theory is to demonstrate an explicit function which requires super logarithmic depth, a.k.a, the $\mathbf{P}$ versus $\mathbf{NC^1}$ problem. The current best depth lower bound is $(3-o(1))\cdot \log n$, and it is widely open how to prove a super-$3\log n$ depth lower bound. Recently Mihajlin and Sofronova (CCC'22) show if considering formulas with restriction on top, we can break the $3\log n$ barrier. Formally, they prove there exist two functions $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\},g:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}^n$, such that for any constant $0<\alpha<0.4$ and constant $0<\epsilon<\alpha/2$, their XOR composition $f(g(x)\oplus y)$ is not computable by an AND of $2^{(\alpha-\epsilon)n}$ formulas of size at most $2^{(1-\alpha/2-\epsilon)n}$. This implies a modified version of Andreev function is not computable by any circuit of depth $(3.2-\epsilon)\log n$ with the restriction that top $0.4-\epsilon$ layers only consist of AND gates for any small constant $\epsilon>0$. They ask whether the parameter $\alpha$ can be push up to nearly $1$ thus implying a nearly-$3.5\log n$ depth lower bound.

Improved Circuit Lower Bounds and Quantum-Classical Separations

Abstract:Kumar used a switching lemma to prove exponential-size lower bounds for a circuit class GC^0 that not only contains AC^0 but can--with a single gate--compute functions that require exponential-size TC^0 circuits. His main result was that switching-lemma lower bounds for AC^0 lift to GC^0 with no loss in parameters, even though GC^0 requires exponential-size TC^0 circuits. Informally, GC^0 is AC^0 with unbounded-fan-in gates that behave arbitrarily inside a sufficiently small Hamming ball but must be constant outside it. We show that polynomial-method lower bounds for AC^0[p] lift to GC^0[p] with no loss in parameters, complementing Kumar's result for GC^0 and the switching lemma. As an application, we prove Majority requires depth-d GC^0[p] circuits of size $2^{\Omega(n^{1/2(d-1)})}$, matching the state-of-the-art lower bounds for AC^0[p]. We also show that E^NP requires exponential-size GCC^0 circuits (the union of GC^0[m] for all m), extending the result of Williams. It is striking that the switching lemma, polynomial method, and algorithmic method all generalize to GC^0-related classes, with the first two methods doing so without any loss. We also establish the strongest known unconditional separations between quantum and classical circuits: 1. There's an oracle relative to which BQP is not contained in the class of languages decidable by uniform families of size-$2^{n^{O(1)}}$ GC^0 circuits, generalizing Raz and Tal's relativized separation of BQP from the polynomial hierarchy. 2. There's a search problem that QNC^0 circuits can solve but average-case hard for exponential-size GC^0 circuits. 3. There's a search problem that QNC^0/qpoly circuits can solve but average-case hard for exponential-size GC^0[p] circuits. 4. There's an interactive problem that QNC^0 circuits can solve but exponential-size GC^0[p] circuits cannot.

Abstract:We investigate the complexity of uniform OR circuits and AND circuits of polynomial-size and depth. As their name suggests, OR circuits have OR gates as their computation gates, as well as the usual input, output and constant (0/1) gates. As is the norm for Boolean circuits, our circuits have multiple sink gates, which implies that an OR circuit computes an OR function on some subset of its input variables. Determining that subset amounts to solving a number of reachability questions on a polynomial-size directed graph (which input gates are connected to the output gate?), taken from a very sparse set of graphs. However, it is not obvious whether or not this (restricted) reachability problem can be solved, by say, uniform AC^0 circuits (constant depth, polynomial-size, AND, OR, NOT gates). This is one reason why characterizing the power of these simple-looking circuits in terms of uniform classes turns out to be intriguing. Another is that the model itself seems particularly natural and worthy of study. Our goal is the systematic characterization of uniform polynomial-size OR circuits, and AND circuits, in terms of known uniform machine-based complexity classes. In particular, we consider the languages reducible to such uniform families of OR circuits, and AND circuits, under a variety of reduction types. We give upper and lower bounds on the computational power of these language classes. We find that these complexity classes are closely related to tallyNL, the set of unary languages within NL, and to sets reducible to tallyNL. Specifically, for a variety of types of reductions (many-one, conjunctive truth table, disjunctive truth table, truth table, Turing) we give characterizations of languages reducible to OR circuit classes in terms of languages reducible to tallyNL classes. Then, some of these OR classes are shown to coincide, and some are proven to be distinct. We give analogous results for AND circuits. Finally, for many of our OR circuit classes, and analogous AND circuit classes, we prove whether or not the two classes coincide, although we leave one such inclusion open.

Unconditionally separating noisy $\mathsf{QNC}^0$ from bounded polynomial threshold circuits of constant depth

Abstract:We study classes of constant-depth circuits with gates that compute restricted polynomial threshold functions, recently introduced by [Kum23] as a family that strictly generalizes $\mathsf{AC}^0$. Denoting these circuit families $\mathsf{bPTFC}^0[k]$ for $\textit{bounded polynomial threshold circuits}$ parameterized by an integer-valued degree-bound $k$, we prove three hardness results separating these classes from constant-depth quantum circuits ($\mathsf{QNC}^0$). $\hspace{2em}$ - We prove that the parity halving problem [WKS+19], which $\mathsf{QNC}^0$ over qubits can solve with certainty, remains average-case hard for polynomial size $\mathsf{bPTFC}^0[k]$ circuits for all $k=\mathcal{O}(n^{1/(5d)})$. $\hspace{2em}$ - We construct a new family of relation problems based on computing $\mathsf{mod}\ p$ for each prime $p>2$, and prove a separation of $\mathsf{QNC}^0$ circuits over higher dimensional quantum systems (`qupits') against $\mathsf{bPTFC}^0[k]$ circuits for the same degree-bound parameter as above. $\hspace{2em}$ - We prove that both foregoing results are noise-robust under the local stochastic noise model, by introducing fault-tolerant implementations of non-Clifford $\mathsf{QNC}^0/|\overline{T^{1/p}}>$ circuits, that use logical magic states as advice. $\mathsf{bPTFC}^0[k]$ circuits can compute certain classes of Polynomial Threshold Functions (PTFs), which in turn serve as a natural model for neural networks and exhibit enhanced expressivity and computational capabilities. Furthermore, for large enough values of $k$, $\mathsf{bPTFC}^0[k]$ contains $\mathsf{TC}^0$ as a subclass. The main challenges we overcome include establishing classical average-case lower bounds, designing non-local games with quantum-classical gaps in winning probabilities and developing noise-resilient non-Clifford quantum circuits necessary to extend beyond qubits to higher dimensions.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis paper contains two parts. In Part I, we show that polynomial-size monotone threshold circuits of depth k form a proper hierarchy in parameter k. This implies in particular that monotone TC0 is properly contained in NC1. In Part II, we introduce a new concept, called local function, which tries to characterize when a function can be efficiently computed using only localized processing elements. It serves as a unifying framework for viewing related and sometimes apparently unrelated results. In particular, it will be demonstrated that the recent results on lower bounds for monotone circuits by Razborov [Ra1] and Karchmer and Wigderson [KW], as well as a main theorem in Part I of this paper, can be regarded as proving certain functions to be nonlocal. We will also suggest an approach based on locality for attacking the conjecture that (nonmonotone) TC0 is properly contained in NC1.
