Abstract:Journal of Mathematical Logic, Ahead of Print. We prove the first unconditional consistency result for superpolynomial circuit lower bounds with a relatively strong theory of bounded arithmetic. Namely, we show that the theory [math] is consistent with the conjecture that [math], i.e. some problem that is solvable in non-deterministic exponential time does not have polynomial size circuits. We suggest this is the best currently available evidence for the truth of the conjecture. The same techniques establish the same results with [math] replaced by the class of problems decidable in non-deterministic barely superpolynomial time such as [math]. Additionally, we establish a magnification result on the hardness of proving circuit lower bounds.

Abstract:We introduce the polynomial coefficient matrix and identify maximum rank of this matrix under variable substitution as a complexity measure for multivariate polynomials. We use our techniques to prove super-polynomial lower bounds against several classes of non-multilinear arithmetic circuits. In particular, we obtain the following results : As our main result, we prove that any homogeneous depth-3 circuit for computing the product of $d$ matrices of dimension $n \times n$ requires $\Omega(n^{d-1}/2^d)$ size. This improves the lower bounds by Nisan and Wigderson(1995) when $d=\omega(1)$. There is an explicit polynomial on $n$ variables and degree at most $\frac{n}{2}$ for which any depth-3 circuit $C$ of product dimension at most $\frac{n}{10}$ (dimension of the space of affine forms feeding into each product gate) requires size $2^{\Omega(n)}$. This generalizes the lower bounds against diagonal circuits proved by Saxena(2007). Diagonal circuits are of product dimension 1. We prove a $n^{\Omega(\log n)}$ lower bound on the size of product-sparse formulas. By definition, any multilinear formula is a product-sparse formula. Thus, our result extends the known super-polynomial lower bounds on the size of multilinear formulas by Raz(2006). We prove a $2^{\Omega(n)}$ lower bound on the size of partitioned arithmetic branching programs. This result extends the known exponential lower bound on the size of ordered arithmetic branching programs given by Jansen(2008).

In particular, we give a new proof of the well-known result that the parity function requires depth-$4$ circuits of size exponential in $n^{1/3}$. Our proof is an application of robust sunflowers and block unpredictability.

Abstract:We study the complexity of representing polynomials by arithmetic circuits in both the commutative and the non-commutative settings. Our approach goes through a precise understanding of the more restricted setting where multiplication is not associative, meaning that we distinguish (xy)z from x(yz). Our first and main conceptual result is a characterization result: We show that the size of the smallest circuit computing a given non-associative polynomial is exactly the rank of a matrix constructed from the polynomial and called the Hankel matrix. This result applies to the class of all circuits in both commutative and non-commutative settings, and can be seen as an extension of the seminal result of Nisan giving a similar characterization for non-commutative algebraic branching programs. The study of the Hankel matrix provides a unifying approach for proving lower bounds for polynomials in the (classical) associative setting. Our key technical contribution is to provide generic lower bound theorems based on analyzing and decomposing the Hankel matrix. We obtain significant improvements on lower bounds for circuits with many parse trees, in both (associative) commutative and non-commutative settings, as well as alternative proofs of recent results proving superpolynomial and exponential lower bounds for different classes of circuits as corollaries of our characterization and decomposition results.

Nondeterministic Quasi-Polynomial Time is Average-Case Hard for [math] Circuits

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Ahead of Print. Following the seminal work of [R. R. Williams, J. ACM, 61 (2014)], in a recent breakthrough, [C. D. Murray and R. R. Williams, STOC 2018] proved that [math] (nondeterministic quasi-polynomial time) does not have polynomial-size [math] circuits (constant depth circuits consisting of [math]/[math]/[math] gates for a fixed constant [math], a frontier class in circuit complexity). We strengthen the above lower bound to an average-case one, by proving that for all constants [math], there is a language in [math] that cannot be [math]-approximated by polynomial-size [math] circuits. Our work also improves the average-case lower bound for [math] against polynomial-size [math] circuits by [R. Chen, I. C. Oliveira, and R. Santhanam, LATIN 2018, pp. 317–330]. Our new lower bound builds on several interesting components, including the following: 1. Barrington's theorem and the existence of an [math]-complete language that is random self-reducible. 2. The subexponential witness-size lower bound for [math] against [math] and the conditional nondeterministic pseudorandom generator (PRG) construction in [R. R. Williams, SIAM J. Comput., 45 (2016), pp. 497–529]. 3. An "almost" almost-everywhere [math] average-case lower bound (which strengthens the corresponding worst-case lower bound in [C. D. Murray and R. R. Williams, STOC 2018]). 4. A [math]-complete language that is downward self-reducible, same-length checkable, error-correctable, and paddable. Moreover, all its reducibility properties have corresponding low-depth nonadaptive oracle circuits. Our construction builds on [L. Trevisan and S. P. Vadhan, Comput. Complexity, 16 (2007), pp. 331–364]. Like other lower bounds proved via the "algorithmic approach," the only property of [math] exploited by us is the existence of a nontrivial [math] algorithm for [math] [R. R. Williams, J. ACM, 61 (2014)]. Therefore, for any typical circuit class [math], our results apply to [math] as well if a nontrivial [math] (in fact, [math]) algorithm for [math] is discovered.

Deriving Nonuniform Lower Bounds from Uniform Nondeterministic Lower Bounds

Abstract:Proving complexity lower bounds remains a challenging task: currently, we only know how to prove conditional uniform (algorithm) lower bounds and nonuniform (circuit) lower bounds in restricted circuit models. About a decade ago, Williams (STOC 2010) showed how to derive nonuniform lower bounds from uniform \emph{upper} bounds. Since then, a number of results of this kind have been proved. For example, Jahanjou et al. (ICALP 2015) and Carmosino et al. (ITCS 2016) proved that if NSETH fails, then $\text{E}^{\text{NP}}$ has circuit size $\omega(n)$. Just recently, it was shown how uniform \emph{lower} bounds can be used to derive nonuniform lower bounds: Belova et al. (SODA 2024) showed that if MAX-3-SAT cannot be solved in co-nondeterministic time $O(2^{(1 - \varepsilon)n})$, then there exists an explicit polynomial family of high arithmetic circuit size; Williams (FOCS 2024) showed that if NSETH is true, then Boolean Inner Product requires large $\text{ETHR} \circ \text{ETHR}$ circuits. In this paper, we continue developing this line of research and show that nondeterministic uniform lower bounds imply nonuniform lower bounds for various types of objects that are notoriously hard to analyze: circuits, matrix rigidity, and tensor rank. Specifically, we prove that if NSETH is true, then there exists a monotone Boolean function family in coNP of monotone circuit size $2^{\Omega(n / \log n)}$. Combining this with the result above, we get win-win circuit lower bounds: either $\text{E}^{\text{NP}}$ requires circuits of size $w(n)$ or coNP requires monotone circuits of size $2^{\Omega(n / \log n)}$. We also prove that MAX-3-SAT cannot be solved in co-nondeterministic time $O(2^{(1 - \varepsilon)n})$, then there exist small explicit families of high rigidity matrices and high rank tensors.

Computations with polynomial evaluation oracle: ruling out superlinear SETH-based lower bounds

Abstract:The field of fine-grained complexity aims at proving conditional lower bounds on the time complexity of computational problems. One of the most popular assumptions, Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH), implies that SAT cannot be solved in $2^{(1-\epsilon)n}$ time. In recent years, it has been proved that known algorithms for many problems are optimal under SETH. Despite the wide applicability of SETH, for many problems, there are no known SETH-based lower bounds, so the quest for new reductions continues. Two barriers for proving SETH-based lower bounds are known. Carmosino et al. (ITCS 2016) introduced the Nondeterministic Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (NSETH) stating that TAUT cannot be solved in time $2^{(1-\epsilon)n}$ even if one allows nondeterminism. They used this hypothesis to show that some natural fine-grained reductions would be difficult to obtain: proving that, say, 3-SUM requires time $n^{1.5+\epsilon}$ under SETH, breaks NSETH and this, in turn, implies strong circuit lower bounds. Recently, Belova et al. (SODA 2023) introduced the so-called polynomial formulations to show that for many NP-hard problems, proving any explicit exponential lower bound under SETH also implies strong circuit lower bounds. We prove that for a range of problems from P, including $k$-SUM and triangle detection, proving superlinear lower bounds under SETH is challenging as it implies new circuit lower bounds. To this end, we show that these problems can be solved in nearly linear time with oracle calls to evaluating a polynomial of constant degree. Then, we introduce a strengthening of SETH stating that solving SAT in time $2^{(1-\varepsilon)n}$ is difficult even if one has constant degree polynomial evaluation oracle calls. This hypothesis is stronger and less believable than SETH, but refuting it is still challenging: we show that this implies circuit lower bounds.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate an approach to circuit lower bounds via bounded width circuits. The approach consists of two steps: (i) We convert circuits to (deterministic or nondeterministic) bounded width circuits. (ii) We prove lower bounds for the bounded width circuits. For the second step, we prove that there is an explicit Boolean function $f$ as follows: If a nondeterministic circuit of size $s$ and width $w$ computes $f$, then $w = \Omega(\frac{n^4}{4^{\frac{s}{n}}s^3}) - \frac{\log_2 s}{2}$. For the first step, we give some observations, which include a relation between conversions to bounded width circuits and a standard pebble game.

Unifying and generalizing known lower bounds via geometric complexity theory

Abstract:We show that most arithmetic circuit lower bounds and relations between lower bounds naturally fit into the representation-theoretic framework suggested by geometric complexity theory (GCT), including: the partial derivatives technique (Nisan-Wigderson), the results of Razborov and Smolensky on $AC^0[p]$, multilinear formula and circuit size lower bounds (Raz et al.), the degree bound (Strassen, Baur-Strassen), the connected components technique (Ben-Or), depth 3 arithmetic circuit lower bounds over finite fields (Grigoriev-Karpinski), lower bounds on permanent versus determinant (Mignon-Ressayre, Landsberg-Manivel-Ressayre), lower bounds on matrix multiplication (Bürgisser-Ikenmeyer) (these last two were already known to fit into GCT), the chasms at depth 3 and 4 (Gupta-Kayal-Kamath-Saptharishi; Agrawal-Vinay; Koiran), matrix rigidity (Valiant) and others. That is, the original proofs, with what is often just a little extra work, already provide representation-theoretic obstructions in the sense of GCT for their respective lower bounds. This enables us to expose a new viewpoint on GCT, whereby it is a natural unification and broad generalization of known results. It also shows that the framework of GCT is at least as powerful as known methods, and gives many new proofs-of-concept that GCT can indeed provide significant asymptotic lower bounds. This new viewpoint also opens up the possibility of fruitful two-way interactions between previous results and the new methods of GCT; we provide several concrete suggestions of such interactions. For example, the representation-theoretic viewpoint of GCT naturally provides new properties to consider in the search for new lower bounds.

Abstract:One of the major open problems in complexity theory is to demonstrate an explicit function which requires super logarithmic depth, a.k.a, the $\mathbf{P}$ versus $\mathbf{NC^1}$ problem. The current best depth lower bound is $(3-o(1))\cdot \log n$, and it is widely open how to prove a super-$3\log n$ depth lower bound. Recently Mihajlin and Sofronova (CCC'22) show if considering formulas with restriction on top, we can break the $3\log n$ barrier. Formally, they prove there exist two functions $f:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\},g:\{0,1\}^n \rightarrow \{0,1\}^n$, such that for any constant $0<\alpha<0.4$ and constant $0<\epsilon<\alpha/2$, their XOR composition $f(g(x)\oplus y)$ is not computable by an AND of $2^{(\alpha-\epsilon)n}$ formulas of size at most $2^{(1-\alpha/2-\epsilon)n}$. This implies a modified version of Andreev function is not computable by any circuit of depth $(3.2-\epsilon)\log n$ with the restriction that top $0.4-\epsilon$ layers only consist of AND gates for any small constant $\epsilon>0$. They ask whether the parameter $\alpha$ can be push up to nearly $1$ thus implying a nearly-$3.5\log n$ depth lower bound.

Abstract:This paper gives the first separation between the power of {\em formulas} and {\em circuits} of equal depth in the $\mathrm{AC}^0[\oplus]$ basis (unbounded fan-in AND, OR, NOT and MOD$_2$ gates). We show, for all $d(n) \le O(\frac{\log n}{\log\log n})$, that there exist {\em polynomial-size depth-$d$ circuits} that are not equivalent to {\em depth-$d$ formulas of size $n^{o(d)}$} (moreover, this is optimal in that $n^{o(d)}$ cannot be improved to $n^{O(d)}$). This result is obtained by a combination of new lower and upper bounds for {\em Approximate Majorities}, the class of Boolean functions $\{0,1\}^n \to \{0,1\}$ that agree with the Majority function on $3/4$ fraction of inputs. $\mathrm{AC}^0[\oplus]$ formula lower bound: We show that every depth-$d$ $\mathrm{AC}^0[\oplus]$ formula of size $s$ has a {\em $1/8$-error polynomial approximation} over $\mathbb{F}_2$ of degree $O(\frac{1}{d}\log s)^{d-1}$. This strengthens a classic $O(\log s)^{d-1}$ degree approximation for \underline{circuits} due to Razborov. Since the Majority function has approximate degree $\Theta(\sqrt n)$, this result implies an $\exp(\Omega(dn^{1/2(d-1)}))$ lower bound on the depth-$d$ $\mathrm{AC}^0[\oplus]$ formula size of all Approximate Majority functions for all $d(n) \le O(\log n)$. Monotone $\mathrm{AC}^0$ circuit upper bound: For all $d(n) \le O(\frac{\log n}{\log\log n})$, we give a randomized construction of depth-$d$ monotone $\mathrm{AC}^0$ circuits (without NOT or MOD$_2$ gates) of size $\exp(O(n^{1/2(d-1)}))$ that compute an Approximate Majority function. This strengthens a construction of \underline{formulas} of size $\exp(O(dn^{1/2(d-1)}))$ due to Amano.

Abstract:We show that CC-circuits of bounded depth have the same expressive power as circuits over finite nilpotent algebras from congruence modular varieties. We use this result to phrase and discuss a new algebraic version of Barrington, Straubing and Thérien's conjecture, which states that CC-circuits of bounded depth need exponential size to compute AND. Furthermore, we investigate the complexity of deciding identities and solving equations in a fixed nilpotent algebra. Under the assumption that the conjecture is true, we obtain quasipolynomial algorithms for both problems. On the other hand, if AND is computable by uniform CC-circuits of bounded depth and polynomial size, we can construct a nilpotent algebra in which checking identities is coNP-complete, and solving equations is NP-complete.

Abstract:We design a deterministic subexponential time algorithm that takes as input a multivariate polynomial $f$ computed by a constant-depth circuit over rational numbers, and outputs a list $L$ of circuits (of unbounded depth and possibly with division gates) that contains all irreducible factors of $f$ computable by constant-depth circuits. This list $L$ might also include circuits that are spurious: they either do not correspond to factors of $f$ or are not even well-defined, e.g. the input to a division gate is a sub-circuit that computes the identically zero polynomial.

Sharp Thresholds Imply Circuit Lower Bounds: from random 2-SAT to Planted Clique

Abstract:We show that sharp thresholds for Boolean functions directly imply average-case circuit lower bounds. More formally we show that any Boolean function exhibiting a sharp enough threshold at \emph{arbitrary} critical density cannot be computed by Boolean circuits of bounded depth and polynomial size. We also prove a partial converse: if a monotone graph invariant Boolean function does not have a sharp threshold then it can be computed on average by a Boolean circuit of bounded depth and polynomial size. Our general result also implies new average-case bounded depth circuit lower bounds in a variety of settings. (a) ($k$-cliques) For $k=\Theta(n)$, we prove that any circuit of depth $d$ deciding the presence of a size $k$ clique in a random graph requires exponential-in-$n^{\Theta(1/d)}$ size. (b)(random 2-SAT) We prove that any circuit of depth $d$ deciding the satisfiability of a random 2-SAT formula requires exponential-in-$n^{\Theta(1/d)}$ size. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first bounded depth circuit lower bound for random $k$-SAT for any value of $k \geq 2.$ Our results also provide the first rigorous lower bound in agreement with a conjectured, but debated, "computational hardness" of random $k$-SAT around its satisfiability threshold. (c)(Statistical estimation -- planted $k$-clique) Over the recent years, multiple statistical estimation problems have also been proven to exhibit a "statistical" sharp threshold, called the All-or-Nothing (AoN) phenomenon. We show that AoN also implies circuit lower bounds for statistical problems. As a simple corollary of that, we prove that any circuit of depth $d$ that solves to information-theoretic optimality a "dense" variant of the celebrated planted $k$-clique problem requires exponential-in-$n^{\Theta(1/d)}$ size.

Smaller ACC0 Circuits for Symmetric Functions

Abstract:What is the power of constant-depth circuits with $MOD_m$ gates, that can count modulo $m$? Can they efficiently compute MAJORITY and other symmetric functions? When $m$ is a constant prime power, the answer is well understood: Razborov and Smolensky proved in the 1980s that MAJORITY and $MOD_m$ require super-polynomial-size $MOD_q$ circuits, where $q$ is any prime power not dividing $m$. However, relatively little is known about the power of $MOD_m$ circuits for non-prime-power $m$. For example, it is still open whether every problem in $EXP$ can be computed by depth-$3$ circuits of polynomial size and only $MOD_6$ gates. We shed some light on the difficulty of proving lower bounds for $MOD_m$ circuits, by giving new upper bounds. We construct $MOD_m$ circuits computing symmetric functions with non-prime power $m$, with size-depth tradeoffs that beat the longstanding lower bounds for $AC^0[m]$ circuits for prime power $m$. Our size-depth tradeoff circuits have essentially optimal dependence on $m$ and $d$ in the exponent, under a natural circuit complexity hypothesis. For example, we show for every $\varepsilon > 0$ that every symmetric function can be computed with depth-3 $MOD_m$ circuits of $\exp(O(n^{\varepsilon}))$ size, for a constant $m$ depending only on $\varepsilon > 0$. That is, depth-$3$ $CC^0$ circuits can compute any symmetric function in \emph{subexponential} size. This demonstrates a significant difference in the power of depth-$3$ $CC^0$ circuits, compared to other models: for certain symmetric functions, depth-$3$ $AC^0$ circuits require $2^{\Omega(\sqrt{n})}$ size [Håstad 1986], and depth-$3$ $AC^0[p^k]$ circuits (for fixed prime power $p^k$) require $2^{\Omega(n^{1/6})}$ size [Smolensky 1987]. Even for depth-two $MOD_p \circ MOD_m$ circuits, $2^{\Omega(n)}$ lower bounds were known [Barrington Straubing Thérien 1990].

We follow his approach and adapt it to certain dynamical systems arising from polynomials of the form , where p is a prime number and where the orbit of is finite. Abstract:Comparator circuits are a natural circuit model for studying bounded fan-out computation whose power sits between nondeterministic branching programs and general circuits. Despite having been studied for nearly three decades, the first superlinear lower bound against comparator circuits was proved only recently by Gál and Robere (ITCS 2020), who established a $\Omega((n/\log n)^{1.5})$ lower bound on the size of comparator circuits computing an explicit function of $n$ bits. In this paper, we initiate the study of average-case complexity and circuit analysis algorithms for comparator circuits. Departing from previous approaches, we exploit the technique of shrinkage under random restrictions to obtain a variety of new results for this model. Among them, we show - Average-case Lower Bounds. For every $k = k(n)$ with $k \geq \log n$, there exists a polynomial-time computable function $f_k$ on $n$ bits such that, for every comparator circuit $C$ with at most $n^{1.5}/O(k\cdot \sqrt{\log n})$ gates, we have \[ \text{Pr}_{x\in\left\{ 0,1 \right\}^n}\left[C(x)=f_k(x)\right]\leq \frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{2^{\Omega(k)}}. \] This average-case lower bound matches the worst-case lower bound of Gál and Robere by letting $k=O(\log n)$. - #SAT Algorithms. There is an algorithm that counts the number of satisfying assignments of a given comparator circuit with at most $n^{1.5}/O\!\left(k\cdot \sqrt{\log n}\right)$ gates, in time $2^{n-k}\cdot\text{poly}(n)$, for any $k\leq n/4$. The running time is non-trivial when $k=\omega(\log n)$. - Pseudorandom Generators and MCSP Lower Bounds. There is a pseudorandom generator of seed length $s^{2/3+o(1)}$ that fools comparator circuits with $s$ gates. Also, using this PRG, we obtain an $n^{1.5-o(1)}$ lower bound for MCSP against comparator circuits.

Abstract:This paper presents a new abstract method for proving lower bounds in computational complexity. Based on the notion of topological and measurable entropy for dynamical systems, it is shown to generalise three previous lower bounds results from the literature in algebraic complexity. We use it to prove that maxflow, a Ptime complete problem, is not computable in polylogarithmic time on parallel random access machines (prams) working with real numbers. This improves, albeit slightly, on a result of Mulmuley since the class of machines considered extends the class "prams without bit operations", making more precise the relationship between Mulmuley's result and similar lower bounds on real prams. More importantly, we show our method captures previous lower bounds results from the literature, thus providing a unifying framework for "topological" proofs of lower bounds: Steele and Yao's lower bounds for algebraic decision trees, Ben-Or's lower bounds for algebraic computation trees, Cucker's proof that NC is not equal to Ptime in the real case, and Mulmuley's lower bounds for "prams without bit operations".
