Abstract:The seven papers in this special section focus on adversarial learning in computational intelligence. The papers aim to capture the most recent advances of adversarial learning from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. Moreover, it attempts to present its novel applications to other domains beyond image generation. Adversarial learning has attracted tremendous attention in the community of machine learning over the past few years. It normally integrates two components that contest with each other in a two-player zero-sum game. Since its birth in 2014, adversarial learning has been widely applied to not only the generation of realistic images, but also many other research topics, such as data augmentation, domain adaptation, and adversarial attack, often leading to appealing performance. However, we have just witnessed the early rise of this technique, and still confront many challenges, for example, the mode collapse problem, and the interpretability of its results and failures. Computational Intelligence (CI) technologies are expected to provide efficient solutions to deal with the raised challenges. Moreover, most of the previous adversarial-learning studies are largely limited in addressing static images or feature vectors. It still remains largely an open question of how adversarial learning performs for other complex and temporally variational signals or modalities, such as speech and text.

Abstract:This issue marks the beginning of the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems (TNNLS). By adding "Learning Systems" to the title, we now state explicitly the scope of the Transactions to include neural networks as well as related learning systems. This issue marks a new era in the history of our Transactions. The Transactions is now ready to face the challenges of the next 10-20 years. With the evolution of the fields of neural networks in particular and computational intelligence in general, the IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems will continue to grow and to succeed in this ever-changing world. Also included are a few comments about the review process of TNN manuscripts and the introduction of 14 new TNNLS Associate Editors. Short biographies are included for the new Associate Editors.

Abstract:Advanced functional materials, drives and transmissions, sensors and mechanisms provide solid foundations for developing intelligent robots, for which modelling and simulation tools have contributed greatly to these developments, and facilitated deployments and applications of intelligent robots. Motivated by rapid developments of sensor fusion, intelligent control and machine learning tools and their widely availability at low cost, this special issue aims at disseminating new modelling and simulation methods for developing intelligent robotic systems and their applications. With the emerging applications to robotics, this focused section competitively selects the 10 research papers covering a spectrum of modeling of novel single robots, human-robot interactive systems, and even robotic automation process, which includes modeling of biped and wearable robots, parallel mechanisms, autonomous robots, and robot-environment interaction, as well as modeling with robot visions.

In the eras of social connectedness and social colonization, people are becoming increasingly enthusiastic about interacting, sharing, and collaborating through online collaborative media. In recent years, this collective intelligence has spread to many different areas, with particular focus on fields related to everyday life such as commerce, tourism, education, and health, causing the size of the Social Web to expand exponentially. The distillation of knowledge from such a large amount of unstructured information, however, is an extremely difficult task, as the contents of today's Web are perfectly suitable for human consumption, but remain hardly understandable to machines. Big social data analysis grows out of this need and combines multiple disciplines such as social network analysis, multimedia management, social media analytics, trend discovery, and opinion mining.

Abstract:This special issue will encompass state-of-the-art research on emerging topics related to development and learning in natural and artificial systems. The primary focus of this special issue is to explore the facets of development and learning from a multidisciplinary perspective by convening researchers from the fields of computer science, robotics, psychology, and developmental studies. We invited researchers to share knowledge and research on how humans and animals develop sensing, reasoning, and actions, and how to exploit robots as research tools to test models of development and learning. We expected the submitted contributions to emphasize the interaction with social and physical environments and how cognitive and developmental capabilities can be transferred to computing systems and robotics. This approach is in harmony with the dual objectives of comprehending human and animal development while leveraging this understanding to enhance future intelligent technologies, particularly for robots that will engage in close interactions with humans.

Abstract:It has been quite a long time since AI researchers in the field of computer science stop talking about simulating human intelligence or trying to explain how brain works. Recently, represented by deep learning techniques, the field of machine learning is experiencing unprecedented prosperity and some applications with near human-level performance bring researchers confidence to imply that their approaches are the promising candidate for understanding the mechanism of human brain. However apart from several ancient philological criteria and some imaginary black box tests (Turing test, Chinese room) there is no computational level explanation, definition or criteria about intelligence or any of its components. Base on the common sense that learning ability is one critical component of intelligence and inspect from the viewpoint of mapping relations, this paper presents two laws which explains what is the "learning ability" as we familiar with and under what conditions a mapping relation can be acknowledged as "Learning Model".

Abstract:Computing is a critical driving force in the development of human civilization. In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of intelligent computing, a new computing paradigm that is reshaping traditional computing and promoting digital revolution in the era of big data, artificial intelligence and internet-of-things with new computing theories, architectures, methods, systems, and applications. Intelligent computing has greatly broadened the scope of computing, extending it from traditional computing on data to increasingly diverse computing paradigms such as perceptual intelligence, cognitive intelligence, autonomous intelligence, and human-computer fusion intelligence. Intelligence and computing have undergone paths of different evolution and development for a long time but have become increasingly intertwined in recent years: intelligent computing is not only intelligence-oriented but also intelligence-driven. Such cross-fertilization has prompted the emergence and rapid advancement of intelligent computing. Intelligent computing is still in its infancy and an abundance of innovations in the theories, systems, and applications of intelligent computing are expected to occur soon. We present the first comprehensive survey of literature on intelligent computing, covering its theory fundamentals, the technological fusion of intelligence and computing, important applications, challenges, and future perspectives. We believe that this survey is highly timely and will provide a comprehensive reference and cast valuable insights into intelligent computing for academic and industrial researchers and practitioners.

Abstract:This article provides an introduction for the special issue of the <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Journal of Science Education and Technology</em> focused on computational thinking (CT) from a disciplinary perspective. The special issue connects earlier research on what K-12 students can learn and be able to do using CT with the CT skills and habits of mind needed to productively participate in professional CT-integrated STEM fields. In this context, the phrase "disciplinary perspective" simultaneously holds two meanings: it refers to and aims to make connections between established K-12 STEM subject areas (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and newer CT-integrated disciplines such as computational sciences. The special issue presents a framework for CT integration and includes articles that illuminate what CT looks like from a disciplinary perspective, the challenges inherent in integrating CT into K-12 STEM education, and new ways of measuring CT aligned more closely with disciplinary practices. The aim of this special issue is to offer research-based and practitioner-grounded insights into recent work in CT integration and provoke new ways of thinking about CT integration from researchers, practitioners, and research-practitioner partnerships.

Abstract:Abstract Recent advances in computing and information science such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), edge computing, cloud computing, metacomputing, and quantum computing are creating new computing paradigms. These advances are providing new opportunities for new research and application development. For instance, the adoption of Industry 4.0 enabled by AI/ML is fundamentally changing how products are designed, manufactured, maintained, and recycled. It enables consideration of all aspects of the product life cycle and realizing sustainable designs and helps us in achieving carbon neutrality. Intelligent machines such as robots and autonomous vehicles are revolutionizing human-machine interactions and increasing digitalization in the manufacturing and transportation industries. It is important for the Journal of Computing and Information Science in Engineering (JCISE) community to identify challenges and opportunities in these emerging areas and inspire new researchers to join the field and become a part of the community. This Special Issue consists of 19 position papers that span a wide variety of topics of interest to the JCISE community.
