Abstract:Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of black stain on primary teeth of Chinese preschool children and to assess a possible association between black stain and caries.Methods This cross-sectional study was carried out in five public kindergartens in Shanghai,China.The study consisted of 1012 children.Caries statuses of dmft and dmfs were assessed by one calibrated dentist using WHO criteria and black stain was evaluated by another dentist.Data were analyzed using SPSS statistical software with significance level of 5%.Results Among these 1012 children,548 of them were male.The average age of the total population was 4.97.Black stain was observed in 12.7% of this population.The most affected teeth and surfaces with black stain were mandibular anterior teeth and the lingual surfaces of these teeth.There was no significant relationship between black stain and gender or age.The prevalence of black stain in urban areas was 16%,significantly higher than that in suburban areas(6.4%,P<0.001).Children with black stain had significantly lower caries prevalence(56.6% vs 72.1%,P<0.05) and fewer caries experiences(dmft:2.94 vs 4.25;dmfs:4.41 vs 7.06,P<0.001) than children without black stain.No difference was found in the dmfs pattern of occlusal,smooth and proximal surfaces between children with and without black stain.Conclusions There is a negative correlation between black stain and caries.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To investigate the prevalence of dental black stain in children and analyze the risk factors of dental black stain. METHODS:We conducted this investigation through a case-control study. A total of 164 children (82 children with dental black stain and 82 children without dental black stain) were recruited from Shanghai Stomatological Hospital. Data regarding their oral hygiene habits, dietary habits, diseases and medication situations were collected by a questionnaire survey. Samples of saliva were collected for pH analysis. Statistical analysis were performed using SPSS 21.0 software package. RESULTS:Univariate analysis showed that the proportion of children in the black stain group who used bottled water as the main source of drinking water was lower than that in the control group (18.3% vs 35.4%), and the proportion of children who used Chinese herbs or eating more vegetables(≥2 times/day) was higher than that in the control group(23.2% vs 9.8%，29.3% vs 14.6%), the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that taking Chinese herbal medicine and eating more vegetables(≥2 times/day) were risk factors for tooth black stains(P<0.05), and use of bottled water as the main source of drinking water was a protective factor. CONCLUSIONS:Taking Chinese herbal medicine and eating more vegetables(≥2 times/day) are risk factors for tooth pigmentation, while drinking more bottled water can reduce the risk of pigmentation.
Epidemiological and Microbiome Characterization of Black Tooth Stain in Preschool Children

Abstract:Objective To assess the epidemiologic attributes and microbial variations associated with extrinsic black tooth stain (BTS) among Chinese preschool children. Methods This cross-sectional study included 250 preschool children (3–4 years) from three kindergartens in Shanghai, China. Following clinical examination, and using a case-control design, saliva and dental plaque specimens were collected from caries-free participants with (n = 21, BTS group) and without (n = 48, control group) BTS. The chi-square test and logistic regression model were used to evaluate factors associated with BTS. 16S rRNA sequencing were used to characterize the associated microbial communities. Results BTS was detected in 12.4% of participants, with a mean of 13.7 black-stained teeth. Participants with BTS had a lower caries burden and better oral hygiene (P = 0.003). Children with less frequent intake of marmalade or honey (P = 0.033) and regular application of fluoride (P = 0.007) had a lower likelihood of having BTS. Microbiota analysis revealed 14 phyla, 35 classes, 63 orders, 113 families, 221 genera, 452 species, and 1,771 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). In terms of microbial diversity, no significant differences were observed in the saliva of the two groups (P > 0.05). Dental plaque from the BTS group exhibited higher OTU richness but lower evenness than that from the control group (Chao P = 0.006, Shannon P = 0.007, respectively) and showed a significant difference in β diversity (P = 0.002). The microbiome in the two groups was characterized by various microbial biomarkers, such as Pseudomonas fluorescens, Leptotrichia sp._HMT_212, Actinomyces sp._HMT_169, and Aggregatibacter sp._HMT_898 in plaques from the BTS group. Functional analysis of the microbial species suggested the existence of a hyperactive metabolic state on teeth surfaces with BTS plaques and revealed that ferric iron, the iron complex transport system, and the iron (III) transport system were more abundant in BTS plaque samples. Conclusions This study provides insights into the epidemiologic and microbial features of BTS in preschool children. The microbiome in BTS is characterized by various microbial biomarkers, which can serve as indicators for BTS diagnosis and prognosis.
Deciduous Dental Caries Status and Associated Risk Factors among Preschool Children in Xuhui District of Shanghai, China

Abstract:Background: This study aims to understand the deciduous dental caries status of preschool children in Xuhui District of Shanghai, China and to analyze the associated risk factors. Methods: In January of 2016, a cross-sectional investigation was conducted to examine the oral health of all the kindergarten children in Xuihui District of Shanghai, China. Meanwhile, a field questionnaire survey was conducted with the children's guardians to ascertain the potential risk factors associated with deciduous dental caries. Results: Among 11,153 children, the prevalence of deciduous dental caries was 47.02%, and the mean dmft score was 2.21. The first three predilection sites were maxillary central primary incisors, mandible second primary molars, and mandible first primary molars. There were statistically significant differences in caries prevalence and dmft among different age groups and different household registration (Hukou) types (P < 0.001). Multivariate Logistic regression suggested that the possible risk factors for deciduous caries included: older age, drinking sweetened beverages frequently, often or usually eating sweets before sleep compared to rarely/never eat them at this time, exclusive or predominant breastfeeding compared to exclusive or predominant artificial feeding and latter introduction of toothbrushing. On the other hand, Shanghai Hukou families, high educational level of guardians (high school or college education), regular parental support for children's toothbrushing, guardians' oral health knowledge, and a good perception about children's oral health conditions were shown as potential protective factors for deciduous dental caries. Conclusions: The deciduous dental caries status of preschool children in Xuhui District of Shanghai was still serious. The caries prevalence in Xuhui, China, is associated with children's age, household registration type, oral health habits, feeding habits, guardians' education level, parental perception about children's oral health and knowledge about oral health.
Black stain and dental caries in primary dentition of preschool children in Qingdao, China

Abstract:Black stain (BS) and caries are common oral issues in children worldwide. This study aimed to reveal the prevalence of BS and caries in primary dentition of children in Qingdao, China and evaluate the potential association between them. A total of 672 preschool children aged 3-5 years old from 12 kindergartens in Qingdao, northern China were enrolled in the study. The prevalences of BS and caries were counted, and their distributions across different ages and genders were analyzed. The potential protective role of BS (independent variable) on caries (dependent variable) was analyzed via binary logistic regression analysis. BS was observed in 103 children (15.33%), including 3 severe- (0.45%), 28 moderate- (4.17%), and 72 mild (10.71%) forms. Caries was observed in 374 children (55.65%) and it was positively associated with age. Notably, the prevalence of caries was lower in children with BS than in those without BS (42.72% vs. 58.00%, respectively). Children with BS were less likely to suffer from caries than those without BS. BS in mild or moderate/severe forms was associated with a low risk of caries. In summary, the prevalence of BS in primary dentition in Qingdao, China is at a relatively high level worldwide. BS is a protective factor for caries in primary dentition.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:This study aimed to explore the association between early life factors and dental caries among 5-year-old Chinese children.METHODS:Data from 9722 preschool children who participated in the third National Oral Health Survey of China were analysed. Information on early life (birth weight, breastfeeding and age when toothbrushing started), child (sex, ethnicity, birth order and dental behaviours) and family factors (parental education, household income, place of residence, number of children in the family, respondent's age and relation to the child) were obtained from parental questionnaires. Children were also clinically examined to assess dental caries experience using the decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft) index. The association of early life factors with dmft was evaluated in negative binomial regression models.RESULTS:We found that birth weight was not associated with dental caries experience; children who were exclusively and predominantly formula-fed had lower dmft values than those exclusively breastfed; and children who started brushing later in life had higher dmft values than those who were brushing within the first year. Only one in seven of all children received regular toothbrushing twice per day, and only 34.7% had commenced toothbrushing by the age of 3 years.CONCLUSIONS:This study shows certain early life factors play a role in dental caries among Chinese preschool children and provides important insights to shape public health initiatives on the importance of introducing early toothbrushing.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE:The early environment, especially the age when parents introduce toothbrushing to their children, can be an important factor to prevent childhood dental caries.
The prevalence of dental caries and its associated factors among preschool children in Huizhou, China: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Dental caries among preschool children were prevalent worldwide and had a significant impact on children and their families. Understanding its prevalence and risk factors helps to optimize the delivery of oral health care to the target population and promote their oral health ultimately. This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the prevalence of dental caries and its associated factors among 3- to 5-year-old children in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China. Method: We recruited children from 21 kindergartens adopting multistage sampling method. Two examiners performed oral examination. They assessed children's dental caries experience following the World Health Organization criteria. Children's dental caries activity, malocclusion, tonsil size and pH value of saliva were evaluated. Parental questionnaires collected child's sociodemographic background and oral-health-related behaviors. Data were analyzed by univariate analysis and logistic regression using SPSS. Results: This study invited 1,485 children and recruited 1,348 (53.2% boys) (response rate: 90.8%). Dental caries prevalence rate was 58.2% for 3-, 70.7% for 4-, 80.5% for 5-year-old and 72.9% for all recruited children. The mean dmft score (±SD) was 3.38 (±4.26) for 3-, 4.75 (±4.96) for 4-, 5.81 (±5.71) for 5-year-old and 4.99 (±5.02) for all children. Age, family status (singleton or not), monthly family income, mother and father's education level, tonsil grading score, spacing in dentition, Cariostat score (reflecting the caries activity), dental plaque index, duration of breastfeeding, dental visit experience, tooth brushing habits and sugary snacking before sleeping were statistically related to the prevalence of dental caries (p < 0.050) in univariate analysis. These factors were further analyzed in the regression model. The results of the final model indicated dental caries were associated with age (p < 0.001), Cariostat score (p < 0.001), spacing (p < 0.001), tonsil grading score (p = 0.013), singleton or not (p = 0.002), sugary snacking habit before bed (p < 0.001) and breast-feeding duration (p = 0.050). Conclusion: Dental caries was prevalent among 3-to 5-year-old preschool children in Huizhou, China. Children's age, caries activity, tonsil size, malocclusion, family background, sugary snacking habit and breast-feeding habit were related to the prevalence of dental caries. More emphasis should be placed on prevention targeting the risk factors from early life.
Dental Caries Status and Its Associated Factors among 3- to 5-Year-old Children in China: A National Survey.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the prevalence and severity of dental caries among pre-school children in China as part of the 4th National Oral Health Survey. METHODS The sampling process was conducted with a multistage stratified cluster method. A total of 40,360 children aged between 3 and 5 years were recruited for this study. Each participant was clinically assessed according to the 5th edition of the oral health survey's basic methods recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and their parents or grandparents completed a questionnaire at a face-to-face interview. The status of dental caries was shown in the form of the mean dmft and the prevalence of dental caries. The logistic regression analysis was performed to study the relationships between the prevalence of dental caries and the selected variables. RESULTS The prevalence of dental caries was 50.8%, 63.6% and 71.9% for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds, respectively. The mean dmft was 2.28, 3.40 and 4.24, respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that children who were mixed-fed had a higher chance of staying free of dental caries; children who had dessert before going to bed were associated with a higher probability of caries. CONCLUSION The status of dental caries among preschool children in China is on the increase. The preschoolers' dental caries status related to their breastfeeding conditions within the first 6 months of life and their snacking habits.

Relationship Between Preschooler's Primary Tooth Caries and Parental Knowledge-Behavior-knowledge of Oral Health in Hudong Community in Pudong New Area

Abstract:Objective To explore the primary teeth caries status of preschoolers in Pudong community and its relevant factors of parental knowledge-belief-practice (KBP).Methods Using stratified random cluster sampling,a total of 1 179 children from 9 kindergartens in Hudong community in Pudong new area were examined.Oral cavity check-ups and parental questionnaire survey were conduced to understand the primary teeth caries rate of preschoolers and its related influencing factors.Results The prevalence rate of primary teeth caries was 53.2％ and DMFT 2.79.The prevalence rate of primary teeth caries had statistical significance in different age groups (P ＜ 0.05).Multi-factor analysis showed that the influencing factors of primary teeth caries were age (P ＜ 0.05),parental education level (P ＜ 0.05),parental assistance of teeth brushing (P ＜ 0.05),children eating sweets before bedtime (P ＜ 0.05) and parental awareness for treating primary teeth (P ＜ 0.05).Conclusions The prevalence rate of primary teeth caries is high among the preschoolers of Pudong.And age,parental education level,parental preventive knowledge of teeth caries and poor eating habits are significant factors correlated with the incidence of dental caries in children.
Self-reported oral health habits, knowledge and conditions of schoolchildren and adolescents in mainland China

Abstract:To determine the oral health habits, knowledge and conditions of students in China and investigate the impact of associated factors. A self-reported online questionnaire was distributed through social networks in mainland China to assess the oral health habits, knowledge, and conditions of students aged 6-20 years attending primary, middle, and high schools. Factors potentially associated with oral health, such as oral health habits of their parents, family education level, and economic regions, were analyzed using McNemar's and Chi-square tests. Within one month, 5561 valid questionnaires were retrieved from all 31 provinces or equivalent regions in mainland China. The results showed that 46.9% of students suffered from bleeding when brushing their teeth, while only 11.8% reported professional teeth cleaning at a dental clinic. Soda beverages were widely consumed among them (75.4%). A significant minority of students brushed their teeth less than twice daily (22.8%) and for about 2 minutes each time (19.3%). Only 21.9% of the students had preventive oral health care. Students' toothbrushing habits and knowledge about interdental cleaning tools were associated with parental habits (p < 0.001). Overall, students from families with higher educational backgrounds and eastern China had better oral health habits, knowledge, and conditions. There is a need to pay more attention to gingival health and caries prevention among schoolchildren and adolescents in mainland China. Improving parental oral hygiene habits could have a positive impact on the oral health of students. Further research on oral health among students is needed in the middle and western regions of China.
[Risk Factors of Dental Caries among Young Children in Pudong New District, Shanghai].

Abstract:PORPOSE:To establish a prospective cohort of kindergarten children and longitudinally study the causes of early childhood caries.METHODS:Cluster random sampling was used to select a kindergarten in the urban and suburban areas of Pudong New District of Shanghai, a total of 240 small-class children joined the study. Chi-square test, analysis of variance, binomial logistic regression model and general linear regression model was used to analyze caries of the cohort children at baseline and 1 year after follow-up with SPSS 21.0 software package.RESULTS:In the first two years of this cohort study, the follow-up rate was 88.3%, the caries rate in the first year of baseline and follow-up were 58.3% and 69.8%, and the mean dmft values were 3.1±4.2 and 4.5±4.9, respectively. 56.1% of children had new caries. Logistic regression results showed that children who lived in the suburbs (P=0.010) and ate candy more frequently (P=0.036) had higher rates of new caries. The results of general linear regression equation showed that children in the suburbs (P<0.001), those who did not use fluoridated toothpaste (P=0.003) and those who ate candy more frequently (P=0.002) had higher new mean dmft values.CONCLUSIONS:Living in the suburbs, not using fluoride toothpaste and eating candy more frequently are important risk factors for new caries in preschool children in Pudong New District of Shanghai.
Dental caries and associated factors in 3 to 5-year-old children in Zhejiang Province, China: an epidemiological survey

Abstract:Abstract Background Dental caries in preschool children is prevalent worldwide, but data regarding its magnitude and associated factors were not available for preschool children in Zhejiang Province, China. This study examines the dental caries situation and its associated factors in Zhejiang Province. Methods A total of 1591 children aged 3–5 years and their parents or caregivers were enrolled in this study. The condition of their teeth was assessed by three dental technicians qualified to WHO 2013 criteria. A structured questionnaire was completed by the children’s parents or caregivers. A logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the risk factors that may be associated with dental caries occurring among preschool children. Results Caries prevalence (dmft> 0) of 3–5 year old children in Zhejiang Province was 70.4%. The mean decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft) scores of the 3, 4 or 5 year old children surveyed were 2.96 ± 4.07, 4.42 ± 4.66, and 5.75 ± 5.19 respectively. The negative binomial regression model found that higher dental caries prevalence was found in children as age increased, with lower body mass index (BMI), with longer breastfeeding duration and with fewer hours of sleep. Conclusions The dental caries prevalence and dmft score of 3–5-year-old children in Zhejiang Province was high, and it was associated with age, BMI, breastfeeding duration and hours slept.

Diet and lifestyle habits associated with caries in deciduous teeth among 3- to 5-year-old preschool children in Jiangxi province, China

Abstract:Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of caries in deciduous teeth and the effect of diet and lifestyle habits on dental caries among 3- to 5-year-old preschool children in Jiangxi Province, China. Methods: In total, 2880 cases involving preschool children were selected by stratified cluster sampling. The dental examination methods and criteria followed the WHO guidelines. SPSS 19.0 was used for the statistical analysis. Chi square tests were used to compare the caries prevalence among children with different social characteristics. Non-parametric tests were used to compare the decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft) index values. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were used to study the effect of diet and lifestyle habits on dental caries. Results: The caries prevalence among the 2880 cases of 3- to 5-year-old preschool children in Jiangxi Province, China was 49.13%. There was no gender difference in this rate (P > 0.05). The caries prevalence increased with age (P < 0.05). The prevalence of caries in the rural areas was higher than that in the urban areas (P < 0.05). The deciduous central incisors and deciduous molars had a higher caries prevalence than the other deciduous teeth. According to the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the caries risk increased with living in a rural area, exclusive breastfeeding, greater frequency of daily snacking, high frequency of snacking before sleep and beginning to brush teeth at a late age; the caries risk decreased when parents helped their children brush their teeth. Conclusion: The caries prevalence among 3- to 5-year-old preschool children in Jiangxi was lower than the level throughout the country and lower than the rate in other developing countries. The children's diet and lifestyle habits were closely related to dental caries. Parents and children should be more aware of oral health, and parents should help their children develop healthy lifestyle behaviours.
Impact of Behavioural Factors and Living Conditions on Dental Caries Among Pupils from Shanghai and Jiangxi Province in China: A School-based Cross-sectional Study

Abstract:Purpose: Dental health is associated with the growth and development, physical or psychological, of children. Although numerous preventive measures are available, dental caries among primary schoolchildren remains a public health concern in China. Understanding the disparity of children's dental health between rural and urban areas in China could provide further insight into the prevention of caries. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the oral health of pupils aged 6-12 years in Pudong District (Shanghai) and Lichuan (Jiangxi Province) in China. A questionnaire survey was performed among children's guardians to identify the potential risk factors for childhood dental caries. Results: A total of 1922 primary schoolchildren were included in this study, with 815 from Pudong and 1107 from Lichuan. The mean age of children from Pudong was 8.57 (SD = 1.61), which was statistically significantly lower than their counterpart from Lichuan (9.36 ± 1.75). The prevalence of caries in Pudong and Lichuan was 63.4% and 75.0%, respectively. Statistically significant differences of demographical and behavioural features were observed between schoolchildren in Pudong and Lichuan. In general, Lichuan children had a higher caries risk compared with their Pudong counterparts (OR = 3.43, 95%CI 2.65-4.28). Moreover, the non-parental caregivers, low family income, low parental educational level, as well as bad dietary habits, were identified as risk factors for caries. Conclusions: Childhood caries in the rural area was far more severe than that in the urban area. This disparity was determined by several factors such as the high proportion of left-behind children in the rural area (e.g. children who remain in rural regions of China while their parents leave to work in urban areas). Our government should put the prevention of caries among rural children at a higher priority in the near future to narrow the gap between rural and urban areas.
Investigation and analysis of oral habits of children with dental caries

Abstract:Objective To provide a guideline for oral health education by investigating preschool children ’ s oral health behavior and their parents’ awareness of oral health knowledge .Methods From January to March in 2015 totally 400 preschool children and their parents were randomly selected in Hospital of Stomatology of Xi ’ an Jiaotong University .A questionnaire survey of oral health knowledge was conducted and statistical analysis was conducted .Results Statistical significance was found in the differences in taking sweet food , eating before sleep, age of first brush and brush times every day among different groups (χ2 value was 10.761, 11.403, 12.579 and 13.577, respectively, all P<0.05).In diet habits, 58.64% preschool children liked to eat sweet food , and 54.67% had eating habit before sleep.In oral habits, only 30.88%of children brushed their teeth for the first time before 3 years old, and 44.48% brushed their teeth twice a day.Considering medical situation , there were 59.49% patients with chief complaint of dental caries , 13.03% had regular medical check-up, and 18.98%took interference measures.In terms of parents’ awareness situation, although they had active attitude on getting oral health knowledge , their knowledge was relatively insufficient .Of the parents, 73.65%paid attention on prevention and health care knowledge, and 54.67%parents obtained knowledge on oral health through video and internet .Conclusion Preschool children with dental caries do not have good oral habits .Parents’ health knowledge needs to be increased .Various measures should be taken to improve children’ s oral health care .
Analysis of the Microbiota of Black Stain in the Primary Dentition

Abstract:Black tooth stain is a characteristic extrinsic discoloration commonly seen on the cervical enamel following the contour of the gingiva. To investigate the relationship between black tooth stain and the oral microbiota, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to compare the microbial composition of dental plaque and saliva among caries-free children with and without black stain. Dental plaque and saliva, as well as black stain, were sampled from 10 children with and 15 children without black stain. Data were analyzed using the pipeline tool MOTHUR. Student's t-test was used to compare alpha diversities and the Mann-Whitney U test to compare the relative abundances of the microbial taxa. A total of 10 phyla, 19 classes, 32 orders, 61 families and 102 genera were detected in these samples. Shannon and Simpson diversity were found to be significantly lower in saliva samples of children with black stain. Microbial diversity was reduced in the black stain compared to the plaque samples. Actinomyces, Cardiobacterium, Haemophilus, Corynebacterium, Tannerella and Treponema were more abundant and Campylobacter less abundant in plaque samples of children with black stain. Principal component analysis demonstrated clustering among the dental plaque samples from the control group, while the plaque samples from the black stain group were not and appeared to cluster into two subgroups. Alterations in oral microbiota may be associated with the formation of black stain.
Dental caries experience of preschool children from different ethnic groups in Guangxi Province in China

Abstract:Purpose: To describe the caries status and oral health-related behaviors of three- to five-year-old Chinese children by their ethnic background, and to identify potential determinants of caries experience. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken in a multi-ethnic province (Guangxi) in Southern China. Representative samples of preschool children from two ethnic groups (Han and an ethnic minority Zhuang: 487 Han and 470 Zhuang children) were examined using decayed, missing, filled teeth/surface (dmft/dmfs) indices. The children's general information as well as their personal oral hygiene practices and dietary habits were collected based on a structured questionnaire. Results: Overall, 60% of children had caries with a mean dmft value of 3.01. Zhuang children had a significantly higher prevalence of rampant caries (13% vs. 9%), mean dmft (3.36 vs. 2.66) and mean dmfs (5.10 vs. 3.76) than the Han children. Decayed teeth/surfaces dominated the dmft/dmfs indices for both Han and Zhuang children. Multiple regression analysis showed that ethnicity and drinking fruit juice from feeding bottles during babyhood were significantly related to dmft. Conclusion: There was a higher level of caries experience in the Zhuang ethnic minority than in Han preschool children.
Dental Erosion among Children Aged 3-6 Years and Its Associated Indicators

Abstract:Objectives: To analyze the status quo of dental erosion in 3- to 6-year-old children in Shanghai.Methods: A stratified, cluster, multistage random sampling methods was applied to 3- to 6-year-old children in Shanghai in 2012. Both questionnaire and clinical oral examination were performed in the survey. The questionnaire included general information, such as age, gender, parental education, dietary habit, oral health behavior, general medical health, and socioeconomic status. The clinical examination focused on the eroded tooth surface and dental erosion extent. SPSS v19.0 software package was utilized for statistical analysis.Results: A total of 1,837 children aged 3-6 years were randomly selected in Shanghai. The overall dental erosion prevalence was 15.1 percent. Among different age groups, a relatively high prevalence of 17.1 percent was found in the 4-year-old group, and a relatively low prevalence of 12.0 percent was observed in the 3-year-old group. Surprisingly, there was no significant difference among the four age groups. The occurrence of dental erosion was influenced by habits of vinegar/coffee/tea consumption, mother's educational background, birthplace, and regurgitation (P < 0.05).Conclusion: The dental erosion prevalence in 3- to 6-year-old children in Shanghai appears to be close to that of other Chinese provinces as well as that observed in most of surveys carried out in different parts of the world. Efforts should be made to raise public awareness about the disease. Moreover, further studies targeted to explore the relationship between dental erosion and risk factors are needed. It is also necessary to establish a unified diagnostic standard for future epidemiological investigations.
Tooth Brushing with Fluoridated Toothpaste and Associated Factors among Chinese Adolescents: a Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background Tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste has become the most important way to provide the anti-caries effect of fluoride around the world. China has promoted the use of fluoridated toothpaste since 1989. However, there are few studies on the national profile of use of fluoridated toothpaste and related factors in Chinese adolescents. We carried out this study to investigate oral hygiene behaviours, especially the status of tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste and its correlates among adolescents, based on data from the latest Nation Oral Health Survey in mainland China. Methods This cross-sectional study recruited 118,601 participants aged 12–15 years using multistage stratified sampling. Questionnaires were completed by students at school. Data employed in analyses were extracted from the questionnaire, including information on tooth brushing, fluoridated toothpaste, dental floss, sociodemographic factors, fluoride knowledge and attitude towards regular dental check-ups. A binary logistic regression was performed to compute the odds ratios (OR). Tooth brushing twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste was the dependent variable. Sociodemographic factors, fluoride knowledge, attitude towards regular dental check-ups, dental visit experience and perceived oral health were the independent variables. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results A total of 32.6% of participants brushed their teeth twice daily, 7.4% used fluoridated toothpaste, and 3.9% cleaned their teeth twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste. The logistic regression showed the probability of twice-a-day tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste was higher among these groups: females (OR: 1.141; 95%CI: 1.072–1.214), 15-year-olds (OR: 1.786; 95%CI: 1.634–1.952), from urban areas (OR: 1.389; 95%CI: 1.288–1.497), without siblings (OR: 1.351; 95%CI: 1.259–1.450), with an educated father (OR: 1. 605; 95%CI: 1.442–1.788) and mother (OR: 1.706; 95%CI: 1.530–1.903), having dental visit experiences (OR: 1.702; 95%CI: 1.589–1.823), rating one’s oral health as good (OR: 2.341; 95%CI: 2.083–2.631), having fluoride knowledge (OR: 4.345; 95%CI: 4.034–4.678) and having a positive attitude towards regular dental check-ups (OR: 1.589; 95%CI: 1.460–1.729). Conclusions The oral hygiene behaviours of Chinese adolescents were undesirable. Twice daily tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste was significantly associated with sociodemographic factors, fluoride knowledge, and attitudes towards regular dental check-ups.
