Abstract:OBJECTIVES:A national representative study to describe oral health behaviour, illness behaviour, oral health knowledge and attitudes among 12-year-old and 18-year-old Chinese, to analyse the oral health behaviour profile of the two age groups in relation to province and urbanisation, and to assess the relative effect of socio-behavioural risk factors on dental caries experience.METHODS:The total number of 4,400 of each age group were selected and data were collected by clinical examinations (WHO criteria) and self-administered structured questionnaires.RESULTS:44.4% of the respondents brushed their teeth at least twice a day but only 17% used fluoridated toothpaste. Subjects who saw a dentist during the previous 12 months or two years were 31.3% and 35.3% for 12-year-olds and 22.5% and 20.2% for 18-year-olds, respectively. Nearly one third (29%) of 12 year-olds and 40.5% of 18-year-olds would visit a dentist in case of signs of caries but only when in pain. Nearly half of the participants (47.2%) had never received any oral health care instruction. Significant variations in oral health practices were found according to province and regular dental care habits were more frequent in urban than in rural areas. The risk of dental caries was high in the case of frequent consumption of sweets and dental caries risk was low for participants with use of fluoridated toothpaste.CONCLUSION:Systematic community-oriented oral health promotion programmes are needed to target lifestyles and the needs of children, particularly for those living in rural areas. A prevention-oriented oral health care policy would seem more advantageous than the present curative approach.
Possible Socioeconomic and Oral Hygiene Behavioural Risk Factors for Self-Reported Periodontal Diseases in Women of Childbearing Age in A Chinese Population

Abstract:Purpose: To examine the socioeconomic and behavioural risk factors for periodontal disease in women of childbearing age and evaluate the extent of public awareness of the association between oral health and pregnancy in China.Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional data from 832 women (including 188 pregnant women) from Yuyao, Zhejiang Province were collected using a structured questionnaire. Demographic data were used to measure the participants' socioeconomic status. The questionnaire assessed knowledge and behaviours related to personal oral hygiene and utilisation of dental care services. Data were divided into pregnant and non-pregnant groups for multivariate logistic regression analysis.Results: In total, 88.3% pregnant women and 74.2% non-pregnant women reported periodontal symptoms. Abnormal body mass index (BMI <= 18.5, odds ratio, OR = 0.76, 95% CI 0.27-0.97, P = 0.024; BMI >= 23.9, OR = 1.83, 95% CI 1.12-3.35, P = 0.035) was significantly associated with self-reported periodontal disease. Minimal mental stress (OR = 0.56, 95% CI 0.43-0.94, P = 0.028), high annual household income (OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.17-0.82, P = 0.008), advanced oral hygiene aids (OR = 0.33, 95% CI 0.18-0.49, P < 0.001) and knowledge of the link between pregnancy and periodontal disease (OR = 0.57, 95% CI 0.33-0.96, P = 0.016) were associated with decreased incidence of self-reported periodontal disease.Conclusions: A low socioeconomic background was correlated with the high incidence of self-reported periodontal disease among women of childbearing age in China. Education about primary oral health and equitable distribution of dental services might be expected to improve oral health in this specific population.

Abstract:Abstract Objectives To investigate oral hygiene behaviours and their correlates among Chinese adolescents. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study recruited 118,601 subjects aged 12-15 years from the National Oral Health Survey using multistage cluster sampling. Questionnaire data were used for descriptive and multivariate analyses. Results A total of 32.6% of subjects brushed their teeth twice daily, 7.4% used fluoridated toothpaste, 3.9% cleaned their teeth twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste, and 9.7% used dental floss. Multivariable logistic regression showed that the probability of good oral hygiene practices (twice-a-day tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste) was higher among these groups: females (AOR: 1.141; 95%CI: 1.072-1.214), 15-year-olds (AOR: 1.786; 95%CI: 1.634-1.952), from urban areas (AOR: 1.389; 95%CI: 1.288-1.497), without siblings (AOR: 1.351; 95%CI: 1.259-1.450), with an educated father (AOR: 1. 605; 95%CI: 1.442-1.788) and mother (AOR: 1.706; 95%CI: 1.530-1.903), having dental visit experiences (AOR: 1.702; 95%CI: 1.589-1.823), rating one’s oral health as good (AOR: 2.341; 95%CI: 2.083-2.631), having fluoride knowledge (AOR: 4.345; 95%CI: 4.034-4.678) and having a positive attitude towards regular dental care (AOR: 1.589; 95%CI: 1.460-1.729). Conclusion The oral hygiene behaviours of Chinese adolescents were undesirable. Good oral hygiene practices are significantly associated with sociodemographic factors, fluoride knowledge, and attitudes towards regular dental care. Clinical Relevance Professionals, parents and adolescents should pay attention to adolescents' oral hygiene behaviours. It should be emphasized that twice-a-day tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste is essential when designing the content of oral health education and when counselling adolescents.

Abstract:Objective To assess dental knowledge and behavior of teachers in Shaoxing.Methods The questionnaire and the standard on oral health survey authorized by WHO were employed in this study.Results 84.6% of the investigated teachers brush teeth twice or three times per day,12.9% of whom brush teeth over three minutes each time.Only 38.7% of the teachers acknowledged that the pit and fissure sealing treatment can prevent dental caries.31.7% did not have periodic oral health checks,and 82.1% did not visit the dentist until they had toothache.Conclusion The findings suggested that we should emphasize oral health education among teachers in order to promote school-based oral health education program.

Abstract:Background To investigate the related risk factors of periodontal health status among Chinese middle school students. Methods This study is a part of the Fourth National Oral Health Epidemiological Survey, which is by far the largest oral epidemiological survey in China, including all provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in mainland China. A multi-stage stratified sampling method was used to select middle school students aged 12–15 from the sampled middle school for investigation. The survey consisted of two parts: oral examination and questionnaire survey. The oral examination included gingival bleeding and calculus. The questionnaire included sociodemographic information, oral health knowledge, attitudes and behaviors. Logistic regression and generalized linear mixed model were used to investigate the risk factors of gingival bleeding and calculus. Results A total of 118,514 middle-school students has been examined. Less gingival bleeding (OR = 0.746, CI 0.718–0.774) and calculus (OR = 0.550, CI 0.529–0.527) were found in 12-year-old group compared to 15-year-old group. The periodontal health status of males was worse than that of females (gingival bleeding OR = 1.102, CI 1.074–1.132, calculus OR = 1.258, CI 1.223–1.295). Besides age and gender, region, living place, ethnic groups, family structure, parent’s education level, oral health knowledge and behavior were also related to gingival bleeding and calculus. Conclusions Gingival bleeding and calculus occurred most of 12–15 years old adolescents in China. Several related factors, such as gender, age, ethnicity, father’s education level, oral health knowledge and behavior, were found in multi-factorial models. The impact of province should arouse people’s attention.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:To describe oral health behaviour, illness behaviour, oral health knowledge and attitudes among 35-44 and 65-74-year-old Chinese; to analyse the oral health behaviour profile of the two age groups in relation to province and urbanisation, and to assess the relative effect of socio-behavioural risk factors on dental caries experience.METHODS:A total number of 4,398 35-44-year-olds and 4,399 65-74-year-olds were selected by multistage stratified cluster random sampling which involved 11 provinces in China. Data were collected by self-administered structured questionnaires and clinical examinations (WHO criteria).RESULTS:32% of the 35-44-year-olds and 23% of the 65-74-year-olds brushed at least twice a day but only 5% used fluoridated toothpaste; 30% and 17% respectively performed 'Love-Teeth-Day' recommended methods of tooth brushing. A dental visit within the previous 12 months was reported by 25% of all participants and 6% had a dental check-up during the past two years. Nearly 15% of the subjects would visit a dentist if they experienced bleeding from gums; about 60% of the subjects paid no attention to signs of caries if there was no pain. Two thirds of the urban residents and one fifth of the rural participants had economic support for their dental treatment from a third party, either totally or partially. Significant variations in oral health practices were found according to urbanisation and province. At age 35-44 years 43% of participants had daily consumption of sweets against 28% at age 65-74 years. Dental caries experience was affected by urbanisation, gender, frequency, time spent on and method of tooth brushing. Knowledge of causes and prevention of dental diseases was low with somewhat negative attitudes to prevention observed.CONCLUSION:Systematic community-based oral health promotion should be strengthened and preventive-oriented oral health care systems are needed, including promotion of further self-care practices and the use of fluoridated toothpaste.

Periodontal Status of Chinese Adolescents: Findings from the 4th National Oral Health Survey.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the periodontal health status and associated factors of adolescents aged 12 to 15 years old in China.METHODS:A cross-sectional national oral health survey was conducted in 2015-2016. The multi-stage stratified cluster sampling was used to select participants in all 31 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities in the mainland of China. Each participant received a clinical assessment including periodontal bleeding and calculus, and 15-year-old adolescents received additional examinations including for periodontal pocket depth and attachment loss, using the latest criteria from the Oral Health Survey Basic Methods, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). A self-answered structured questionnaire was designed to collect the data of background information and associated risk factors.RESULTS:A total of 118,514 adolescents (14.0 ± 1.09 years old) completed all the oral examinations and the questionnaire. The prevalence of periodontal bleeding and calculus was 61.0% and 67.3% respectively. In the group of 15 year olds, 6.5% adolescents had periodontal pocket and 0.5% had attachment loss. Molars were often involved and, furthermore, calculus also occurred on lower incisors. The periodontal status of adolescents became worse as they grew up. The condition of girls was significantly better than boys.CONCLUSION:This survey illustrated a brief picture of periodontal status of adolescents in China showing that gingival bleeding and calculus were very common and frequent. Further actions on oral health education were necessary, especially for those in lower socio-economic classes.

Abstract:Background Tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste has become the most important way to provide the anti-caries effect of fluoride around the world. China has promoted the use of fluoridated toothpaste since 1989. However, there are few studies on the national profile of use of fluoridated toothpaste and related factors in Chinese adolescents. We carried out this study to investigate oral hygiene behaviours, especially the status of tooth brushing with fluoridated toothpaste and its correlates among adolescents, based on data from the latest Nation Oral Health Survey in mainland China. Methods This cross-sectional study recruited 118,601 participants aged 12–15 years using multistage stratified sampling. Questionnaires were completed by students at school. Data employed in analyses were extracted from the questionnaire, including information on tooth brushing, fluoridated toothpaste, dental floss, sociodemographic factors, fluoride knowledge and attitude towards regular dental check-ups. A binary logistic regression was performed to compute the odds ratios (OR). Tooth brushing twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste was the dependent variable. Sociodemographic factors, fluoride knowledge, attitude towards regular dental check-ups, dental visit experience and perceived oral health were the independent variables. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Impact of Behavioural Factors and Living Conditions on Dental Caries Among Pupils from Shanghai and Jiangxi Province in China: A School-based Cross-sectional Study

Abstract:Purpose: Dental health is associated with the growth and development, physical or psychological, of children. Although numerous preventive measures are available, dental caries among primary schoolchildren remains a public health concern in China. Understanding the disparity of children's dental health between rural and urban areas in China could provide further insight into the prevention of caries. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the oral health of pupils aged 6-12 years in Pudong District (Shanghai) and Lichuan (Jiangxi Province) in China. A questionnaire survey was performed among children's guardians to identify the potential risk factors for childhood dental caries. Results: A total of 1922 primary schoolchildren were included in this study, with 815 from Pudong and 1107 from Lichuan. The mean age of children from Pudong was 8.57 (SD = 1.61), which was statistically significantly lower than their counterpart from Lichuan (9.36 ± 1.75). The prevalence of caries in Pudong and Lichuan was 63.4% and 75.0%, respectively. Statistically significant differences of demographical and behavioural features were observed between schoolchildren in Pudong and Lichuan. In general, Lichuan children had a higher caries risk compared with their Pudong counterparts (OR = 3.43, 95%CI 2.65-4.28). Moreover, the non-parental caregivers, low family income, low parental educational level, as well as bad dietary habits, were identified as risk factors for caries. Conclusions: Childhood caries in the rural area was far more severe than that in the urban area. This disparity was determined by several factors such as the high proportion of left-behind children in the rural area (e.g. children who remain in rural regions of China while their parents leave to work in urban areas). Our government should put the prevention of caries among rural children at a higher priority in the near future to narrow the gap between rural and urban areas.

Abstract:adolescents aged 12 to 15 years based on the 4th National Oral Health Survey and to explore its associated factors.METHODS:Students aged 12 to 15 years were recruited using to a multistage stratified random sampling method. All the subjects received oral examination and completed a questionnaire. Information relating to OHRQoL was collected through a Mandarin version of the child oral impacts on daily performances (Child-OIDP) questionnaire. The relationship between the Child-OIDP scores and independent variables was assessed using a Mann-Whitney U-test, Kruskal-Wallis test and a multivariate Poisson regression.RESULTS:A total of 89,582 subjects were included in the analysis, of whom 76.6% reported oral impacts in the last 6 months. Eating was the most affected daily performance. The results of the regression analysis showed that factors associated with adolescents' OHRQoL included sex, location of residence, region, only child status, parents' level of education, frequency of sugar consumption, self-perception of general/oral health, dental appointments in the past 12 months, oral health knowledge status, age, decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index and number of teeth with gingival bleeding.CONCLUSION:Oral impacts were common among Chinese adolescents, although most were not so severe. Eating was the most commonly affected performance. Sex, location of residence, region, only child status, parents' level of education, frequency of sugar consumption, selfperception of general/oral health status, dental appointments in the previous 12 months, oral health knowledge status, age, DMFT index and number of teeth with gingival bleeding were found to be associated with OHRQoL.

Abstract:Objectives: To examine the association of family factors on oral health behaviors of children and compare them between permanent residents and migrant children. Methods: A total of 3015 children in grades 4, 5, and 6 from 16 elementary schools and their parents in Beijing and Guangzhou, China, were selected through multistage stratified cluster random sampling. Questionnaires constructed for this study were self-completed by children and parents to collect information on children's oral health behaviors (COHB), parents' modeling behaviors (PMB), parents' direct controlling behaviors (PDCB), parents' indirect controlling behaviors (PICB), parents' oral health knowledge and attitudes (POHKA), and children's oral health knowledge and attitudes (COHKA). Correlation analysis and path analysis were used to explore the correlation between COHB and PMB, as well as the effects of family factors [socioeconomic status (SES), PMB, PDCB, PICB, and POHKA on COHB]. Results: Considering all participants, the rates of behavioral similarities of parents and children were 63.8-86.1%, all showing statistical significance. For family factors included, PMB, SES, PICB, and POHKA demonstrated positive relationships with COHB with standardized coefficients of 0.200, 0.122, 0.040, and 0.059 in residents and 0.160, 0.121, 0.090, and 0.041 in migrants, respectively. Family SES was associated with COHB directly and indirectly to a similar degree. In migrants, the relationship between COHKA and COHB was greater than that between PMB and COHB. COHB scores were higher in younger children. In residents, the relationship between PMB and COHB was greater than that between COHKA and COHB. COHB scores were slightly higher in older children indirectly influenced by increases in COHKA. Conclusions: Parents' behaviors shared relatively high similarities with COHB and family factors were associated with COHB greatly. The relationship between PMB and COHB was less than that between COHKA and COHB in migrants. The association between family factors and COHB in disadvantaged populations should be considered when designing children's health education programs.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:To describe the oral health status of Chinese children and adults at national level in relation to location and province and to highlight changes in dental caries experience.DESIGN:Cross-sectional study, oral epidemiological survey based on WHO methodology, clinical examinations.SETTING:National survey by National Committee for Oral Health.SUBJECTS:Representative samples of provinces, districts, townships; cluster sampling including subjects aged 5,12,15,18, 35-44 and 65-74. Each age group consisted of 23,452 participants, i.e. total of 140,712 individuals.RESULTS:At age 5, 76.6% were affected by dental caries and mean dmft was 4.5. Mean DMFT varied from 1.0 in 12-year-olds, 1.4 in 15-year-olds, 1.6 in 18-year-olds, 2.1 in 35-44-year-olds to 12.4 in 65-74-year-olds. In adults, caries experience was higher in females than in males. The effect of urbanisation on caries prevalence in children varied by province and age. Among adolescents and young adults caries levels were high in urban areas while caries experience was high for old-age people of rural areas. At national level, changes in dental caries prevalence of 12- and 15-year-olds were small. However, some provinces with extensive oral health programmes (e.g. Love Teeth Day) showed declining caries experience whereas provinces with limited preventive activities had increasing levels of caries. For all age groups, gingival bleeding and calculus were most frequent. Severe periodontal conditions were relatively rare.CONCLUSION:The systematic implementation of preventive oral care and community-oriented health programmes are needed for the continuous promotion of oral health in China.

Children who were recruited in the survey completed a dental examination and filled in a questionnaire. Oral health status, pit-and-fissure sealant history, oral hygiene behaviours, sugar consumption habits, status of dental service utilisation, and oral health knowledge were compared between children from regions with and without coverage of the national programme. For the number of decayed, missing and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) and its components, as well as the number of teeth with pit-and-fissure sealants, mean values were statistically tested to see if significance existed between regions covered by the national programme and uncovered regions, whereas caries prevalence and percentage of pit-and-fissure sealants presented were also compared.RESULTSData from 27,821 12-year-old children were analysed, among whom 7,726 were from regions covered by the national programme and 20,095 were from uncovered regions. Statistical significance was found in caries experience and activity, pit-and-fissure sealant history, sugar consumption habits, utilisation of dental services and oral health knowledge when compared between the covered and uncovered regions. Prevalence of dental caries and indices for caries experience and activity was lower in regions covered by the national programme than those not covered, while the percentage of pit-and-fissure sealants presented and the number of teeth with pit-and-fissure sealants exhibited higher in the covered regions. This remained the same even if we focused only on the first molars instead of the full dentition.CONCLUSIONThe National Oral Health Comprehensive Intervention Program for Children in China potentially contributed to better oral health status, behaviour and knowledge in 12-year-old children. The expansion and extension of coverage of the national programme was expected to be beneficial for improving oral health status in children, as well as constructing teams of oral and dental workforce and working mechanisms in some underdeveloped regions.
Oral Health Status and Risk Factors for Caries in Permanent Teeth among 12-year-old Students in Guangdong, Southern China: A Population-based Epidemiological Survey.

Abstract:PURPOSE To assess the current prevalence of caries, gingival bleeding, calculus, and fluorosis and to determine the risk factors for caries in permanent teeth of 12-year-old students in Guangdong Province, China. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 1920 12-year-old students in Guangdong Province. All participants were required to undergo an oral health examination. Information concerning the subjects' family background, dietary habits, and relevant oral health behaviour were collected in a structured questionnaire. Chi-squared tests, Wilcoxon rank-sum tests, and the logistic regression model were used in the statistical analysis. RESULTS The prevalence rates of caries in permanent teeth, gingival bleeding, calculus, and fluorosis were 43.07%, 40.57%, 43.75%, and 5.05%, respectively; the average decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index was 1.06±1.721. Residence (odds ratios [OR] rural=1.798, 95% CI: 1.485-2.177), sex (OR female=1.352, 95% CI: 1.121-1.631), paternal education level (OR >9 years=0.755, 95% CI: 0.608-0.936), presence of calculus (OR yes=1.279, 95% CI: 1.057-1.548), and frequency of consumption of sugary snacks (OR frequently=1.418, 95% CI: 1.064-1.890) were statistically significantly associated with the risk of permanent teeth caries. CONCLUSION Oral health in 12-year-olds in Guangdong Province remains to be improved. Rural residence, female sex, the presence of calculus, and frequent consumption of sugary snacks could increase the risk of caries. The paternal educational level was negatively associated with the risk of caries, whereas we found no association between the maternal educational level and the risk of caries in this population.

Abstract:Abstract Background Children aged 6–7 years are in the early mixed dentition, which is a period of high prevalence of dental caries and other dental diseases and a critical period for the formation of oral health behaviors. Therefore, good oral hygiene habits of children and oral health knowledge of parents are very important. This study sought to explore the relationship between children’s oral health behaviors, parental oral health knowledge, parental choices of pit and fissure sealants, and parents’ education levels based on a large-scale sample size for the first time, and to compare the influences of parental education levels between parents. Methods Families of the first and second graders of primary schools in Wuhan Hongshan District were included in this study. A total of 8446 questionnaires were collected to obtain comprehensive information on children’s oral health behaviors, parents’ oral health knowledge and parents’ pit and fissure sealants-related choices. The relationship between these outcome variables and parents’ education levels were studied using logistic regression analysis and chi-square test. Results Parents who reported good educational background had more favorable oral health knowledge than those of other parents, and their children had better oral hygiene behaviors. Four indicators of five measures to children’s oral health behaviors were significantly associated with mother’s education level ( P < 0.05), and three of them were related to father’s education level ( P ≤ 0.01). Moreover, seven indicators of eight measures to parents’ oral health knowledge were significantly related to mother’s education level ( P < 0.05) and four of them were affected by the father’s (P < 0.05). In addition, parents with higher educational attainments paid more attention to the completeness of medical facilities, the environment of dental practice, the distance to treatment sites, and took less concern of children’s willingness when choosing the pit and fissure sealants sites. Conclusions In families with children at the early mixed dentition stage, parents with higher education levels tend to have better oral health knowledge and more oral health care needs, such as pit and fissure sealants. In addition, children of parents who have better educated parents tend to perform better oral hygiene practices.

Abstract:Objective Achieving good oral health-related quality of life (OHRQOL) is of particular concern in children. The inter-relations among oral health knowledge, self-efficacy, behaviours and OHRQOL in children groups remain unclear. This study aimed to explore the inter-relations between these oral health behaviour-related factors and OHRQOL in primary school children. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 651 children in grades 2 and 3 were recruited in October 2020 from two primary schools in Minhang District, Shanghai, China. Data were collected through self-reported questionnaires, consisting of demographic characteristics, oral health knowledge, self-efficacy, oral health behaviours and OHRQOL. Pearson's correlation analyses were used to analyse the relationship between study variables. Structural equation models were used to test the inter-relations between OHRQOL and oral health behaviour-related factors. Results Four hypothetical structural equation models were tested and one of them was selected as the most appropriate model, which explained 15.0% of the variance in OHRQOL. This selected model showed that oral health behaviours were directly related to OHRQOL. Oral health knowledge was indirectly associated with OHRQOL through both self-efficacy and oral health behaviours. Self-efficacy was directly associated with OHRQOL or was indirectly associated with OHRQOL through oral health behaviours. Conclusion This study revealed a pathway of association between children's oral health knowledge and their OHRQOL, in which children's oral health self-efficacy and behaviours had indirect effects. This provides a basis for understanding the mechanism of oral health promotion interventions to improve children's OHRQOL and helps to identify direct or indirect intervention targets.

Abstract:Objective: Research on what family factors influence children’s oral health behaviours (COHB) in developing countries is limited, and there have been no path analyses accounting for gender differences in these factors. Thus, our study evaluated gender differences in COHB including the influencing pathways of family factors in China.Materials and methods: Through multistage cluster sampling, 915 pairs of mothers and children from six public elementary schools in Beijing completed self-administered questionnaires regarding COHB, parents’ modelling behaviours (PMB), parents’ controlling behaviours (PCB), parents’ oral health knowledge and attitudes (PKA), and children’s oral health knowledge and attitudes (CKA). The influencing factors were analysed using path analysis.Results: Compared with boys, girls showed significantly better performance in drinking less carbonated drinks regularly (8.6% vs. 16.9%). For both genders, PMB shad a significant direct influence on COHB, while PKA had an indirect influence through PMB. In the boys’ model, PKA indirectly influenced COHB through CKA. In the girls’ model, socioeconomic status had a positive direct effect on COHB.Conclusions: The gender differences were not as large as expected. Given that slightly different influential factors for COHB exist between boys and girls, interventions should take note of the similarities and differences in pathways.

Abstract:Objective To understand the oral health behaviors status among children aged 5-year old in Mianyang city,and provide evidence for further implementing oral health education. Methods Using multistage sampling,285 parents of children aged 5-year old were selected in Mianyang city according to 3rd Chinese national oral health investigation criteria and children's oral health behaviors were investigated by questionnaire. Results The awareness rate of parents' for‘Dental sealant could prevent caries for children' was 11. 6%,the main sources of oral knowledge were TV/radio( 64. 9%),newspaper/magazine( 55. 4%),respectively. 90. 2% of parents agreed that it is very important to protect children' s six-year-old teeth. 69. 04% of children ate sugary foods every day,75. 8% of children had the habit of eating sweets before bedtime. 73. 0% of children began to brush their teeth before the age of three,parents who helped children to brush their teeth every day and check the brushing effect were 18. 6% and 19. 6% respectively. 75. 8% of children did not make any oral cavity in the last year,46. 7% of parents believed there was no problem with the children's teeth. The main reason for the latest dental clinic was acute and chronic toothache,checking the teeth regularly accounted for 4. 2% only,the correlation coefficient between knowledge score and attitude score was 0. 285,and the coefficient between knowledge score and behavior score was 0. 213. Conclusion Oral health behaviors of children aged 5-year old in Mianyang city need improvements,although most of the children's parents had positive attitude and certain knowledge on oral health. They were less able to translate into practice,health promotion activities are still needed to carry out to enable children to develop correct oral health behaviors.

Abstract:Dental and Medical students are professional health care providers in the future, and their self-awareness and behavior of oral health highly affects their oral health education attitude for the general population. The objectives of this study were to investigate oral health behavior and knowledge of dental and medical undergraduates. The oral health behavior and knowledge of 221 dental undergraduates and 325 medical undergraduates in China were investigated through a questionnaire. With grades increasing, the oral hygiene behaviors and knowledge of undergraduates were gradually improved. Dental undergraduates showed better improvement than medical ones. However, for the higher grade students of two majors, not everyone brushed their teeth twice a day for three minutes each time, or used fluoride toothpaste. Very few people used floss, some undergraduates smoked every day. The proportion of dental undergraduates in the three grades who answered all the oral health questions correctly was 7.69%, 65.08% and 78.75% respectively, and the proportion of medical ones was 8.96%, 12.39% and 33.33% respectively. The dental and medical undergraduates’ mastery of oral health knowledge and behavior was undesirable, especially the latter. It is necessary to carry out oral health education for medical undergraduates and even dental undergraduates in various ways from the beginning of freshmen.
