Abstract:Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loss from rice paddy fields represents a significant threat to water quality in China. In this project, three irrigation-drainage regimes were compared, including one conventional irrigation-drainage regime, i.e. continuous submergence regime (CSR), and two improved regimes, i.e. the alternating submergence-nonsubmergence regime (ASNR) and the zero-drainage irrigation technology (ZDIT), to seek cost-effective practices for reducing nutrient loss. The data from these comparisons showed that, excluding the nutrient input from irrigation, the net exports of total N and total P via surface field drainage ranged from -3.93 to 2.39 kg ha and 0.17 to 0.95 g ha(-1) under the CSR operation, respectively, while N loss was -2.46 to -2.23 kg ha(-1) and P export was -0.65 to 0.31 kg ha(-1) under the improved regimes. The intensity of P export was positively correlated to the rate of P application. Reducing the draining frequency or postponing the draining operation would shift the ecological role of the paddy field from a nutrient export source to an interception sink when ASNR or the zero-drainage water management was used. In addition, since the rice yields are being guaranteed at no additional cost, the improved irrigation-drainage operations would have economic as well as environmental benefits.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) losses from agricultural fields have been extensively studied. In contrast, surface runoff and N losses have rarely been considered for bamboo forests that are widespread in regions such as southern China. The thriving of bamboo industries has led to increasing fertilizer use in bamboo forests. In this study, we evaluated surface runoff and N losses in runoff following different fertilization treatments under field conditions in a bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) forest in the catchment of Lake Taihu in Jiangsu, China. Under three different fertilization regimes, i.e., control, site-specific nutrient management (SSNM), and farmer's fertilization practice (FFP), the water runoff rate amounted to 356, 361, and 342 m3 ha−1 and accounted for 1.91, 1.98, and 1.85 % of the water input, respectively, from June 2009 to May 2010. The total N losses via surface runoff ranged from 1.2 to 1.8 kg ha−1. Compared with FFP, the SSNM treatment reduced total nitrogen (TN) and dissolved nitrogen (DN) losses by 31 and 34 %, respectively. The results also showed that variations in N losses depended mainly on runoff fluxes, not N concentrations. Runoff samples collected from all treatments throughout the year showed TN concentrations greater than 0.35 mg L−1, with the mean TN concentration in the runoff from the FFP treatment reaching 8.97 mg L−1. The loss of NO3 −–N was greater than the loss of NH4 +–N. The total loss of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) reached 23–41 % of the corresponding DN. Therefore, DON is likely the main N species in runoff from bamboo forests and should be emphasized in the assessment and management of N losses in bamboo forest.

Abstract:A field experiment located in TaiHu Lake Basin in China was conducted, by application of superphosphate or a mixture of superphosphate with manure, to elucidate the interception of P export during a typical rice growing season through ‘zero-drainage water management’ combined with sound irrigation, rainfall forecasting and field drying. P concentrations in floodwater rapidly declined before the first event of field drying, and subsequently tended to return to the background levels. Before the first field drying TPP was the predominant P form in floodwater on fields with no P input, DRP on plots that received superphosphate only, and DOP on plots treated with the mixture of superphosphate and manure. Thereafter TPP became the major form. No P export was found from the paddy fields, but a retention of 0.65kgha−1, mainly due to soil P sorption. The results recommend the zero-drainage water management for full-scale areas for minimizing P export.
Studies on Surface Runoff and Nitrogen Loss in Bamboo Forest Ecosystem

Abstract:Through setting runoff fields in typical bamboo (Phylostachys pubescens) forests to investigate the effect of different fertilization treatments on runoff and nutrient losses under field conditions.The results showed that in the period from June to December of 2009,under the treatments of control (CK),site-specific nutrient management (SSNM),and farmers’ fertilizer practice (FFP),the runoff loss reached 279,284,267 m3/hm2,the soil particle loss reached 393,369,396 kg/hm2,respectively.The runoff and soil particle losses had close correlations with the precipitation of the period.Largest losses happened in August for runoff and in June,July and August for soil particles.The losses of particle nitrogen (PN) and water-soluble nitrogen (DN) are about 51% and 49% of the total N losses,respectively.The loss of water-soluble N in the period reached 0.37,0.46,0.49 kg/hm2 for CK,SSNM and FFP,respectively.The main factor influencing soil N loss is precipitation.Comparing with FFP,the SSNM treatment significantly reduced soil particle loss and water-soluble N loss as well in this experiment.
Nationwide Estimates of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Losses Via Runoff from Rice Paddies Using Data-Constrained Model Simulations

Abstract:Quantifying the surface runoff losses of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) at the regional scale is still challenging, mainly due to the model deficiencies and the lack of high-resolution data of agricultural management practices. Here, we re-evaluate N and P runoff losses from single, early and late rice systems in China, using a newly-developed model that was constrained by 127 rainfall-runoff events in 11 sites and driven by the fertilization and irrigation schemes from national surveys covering most of rice producing provinces. Results show that national N and P runoff losses from rice paddies were 272.6 +/- 101.2 Gg N yr(-1) and 17.0 +/- 6.4 Gg P yr(-1), which were 38% and 12% less than previous model estimates, respectively, but 43% more than those of the first National Pollution Census Program (NPCP). The hotspots of N and P runoff losses were identified, most of which occurred in south China (60% of the total), generated during non-fertilization period (>65%), and took place in single rice system (-50%). These losses might be mitigated by -90% through the increase in weir outlet height and the application of shallow-wet irrigation, but remain relatively stable even if optimizing fertilization scheme. The detailed assessment of mitigation potentials highlights an urgency in environmental policy regulation as well as farmers' accessibility to advanced irrigation technologies, which is expected to inform promotion towards more effective non-point source pollution controls in China and other rice-producing countries. Characteristics of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Runoff Losses from Croplands with Different Planting Patterns in a Riverine Plain Area of Zhejiang Province, East China

Abstract:By the method of site-specific observation, and selecting 27 field plots with 7 planting patterns in Shaoxing county of Zhejiang Province as test objects, this paper studied the characteristics of nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) runoff losses, loads, and their affecting factors in the croplands with different planting patterns in riverine plain area of the Province under natural rainfall. The mean annual runoff loads of total P, dissolved P, and particulate P from the field plots were 4.75, 0.74 and 4.01 kg x hm(-2), respectively, and the load of particulate P was much higher than that of dissolved P. The mean annual runoff loads of total N, dissolved total N, dissolved organic N, NH4(+)-N, and NO3(-)-N were 21.87, 17.19, 0.61, 3.63 and 12.95 kg x hm(-2), respectively, and the load of different fractions of dissolved total N was in the sequence of NO3(-)-N > NH4(+)-N > dissolved organic N. As for the field plots with different planting patterns, the runoff loads of total N, dissolved total N, dissolved organic N, and NO3(-)-N were in the sequence of fallow land < nursery land < single late rice field < double rice field < rape (or wheat)-single late rice field < wheat-early rice-late rice field < vegetable field, while those of total P and particulate P were in the sequence of fallow land < nursery land < single late rice field and double rice field < wheat-early rice-late rice field < rape (wheat)-single late rice field < vegetable field. No significant difference was observed in the load of water-dissolved P among the test plots with different planting patterns. The runoff losses of N and P mainly occurred in crop growth period, and the proportions of N and P losses in the growth period increased with increasing multiple crop index. The runoff losses of total N, dissolved N, and NO3(-)-N were mainly related to the application rate of N fertilizer, and soil NO3(-)-N content also had obvious effects on the runoff losses of total N and dissolved N. The runoff loss of dissolved organic N was related not only to N application rate, but also to soil total N and organic carbon. The runoff loss of NH4(+)-N was mainly related to soil available NH4(+)-N, but not related to N application rate. The runoff losses of total P and particulate P were related to both P application rate and soil available P, while the runoff loss of water dissolved P was less related to P application rate but had relations to soil total P and available P.
Simulation Study of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Loss with Runoff under Different Land Use in Northern Jiangsu Province

Abstract:Non-point source pollutants have been accumulated for a long time, and the soil is always easy for eroding in northern area of Jiangsu province. The pollutants flood into the river with rainfall runoff in flood seasons, which has become the one of the important reasons that causes water quality not stable in this area. Three typical lands in northern water-deficient area of Jiangsu province were studied on nitrogen and phosphorus losses in artificial rain-runoff simulator, which rainfall intensity was set 80mm/h (rainstorm). The results showed that the loss amounts of runoff and sediment followed the order that paddy field > orchard > woodland under the same rainfall condition. The amounts of nutrient losses were different among three types of land. The losses of TN (total nitrogen) in runoff followed the order that paddy field > orchard > woodland, and the TP (total phosphorous) followed the order that orchard > paddy field>woodland. The characters of different nitrogen and phosphorous forms loss were significant difference in different types of land surface soil. The most of TN and TP were lost through suspended particle.

Abstract:Surface runoff plays an important role in the process of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loss. It has two common evaluation indicators, runoff and sediment, which are greatly affected by the contributing factors. To study the impacts of surface runoff and sediment on N and P loss, 36 simulated rainfalls were applied on fields with different conditions (three rainfall intensities, three coverage ratios, and two slopes) at laboratory scale with two replicates. It was found that: (1) loss modulus of both the total nitrogen and total phosphorus decreased with runoff occurrence time; (2) runoff modulus had a closer relationship with undissolved N and P than dissolved N and P; (3) N loss was more affected by runoff than P loss; (4) both N and P loss modulus followed the consistent changes with the sediment content. At last, suggestions were provided to reduce the harm of N and P loss in red soil region of southern China in different areas with different conditions.

Abstract:The characteristics of nitrogen and phosphorus loss from rice field by natural rainfall runoff were studied in Shuangqiao Farm of Jiaxing city, located at the Yangtz river delta region. The experiment was conducted using the fifteen plots method with an irrigation water-supported system. From results, we could get these information as follows: firstly, the highest total nitrogen (TN) concentration was 22.15 mg/L, and 4.84 mg/L for total phosphorus (TP) which exceeded more than the criterion for TN and TP regulated by our national government. Secondly, dissolved nitrogen was the predominant losing nitrogen form in runoff, of which nitrate nitrogen had about a percentage of 40~80, and 3.4~27 percent only for ammonium nitrogen, however, there was 76~79 percent of particular phosphorus moving in runoff. Thirdly, the discharge of nitrogen and phosphorus with runoff losing from rice field was 0.23~0.80 kg/hm~2 and 0.07~0.15 kg/hm~2 respectively, which both was less than one percent of the nitrogen fertilizer input. Finally, it was found that rainfall and fertilizer were two main factors influencing nitrogen and phosphorus loss in runoff, and there was a significant relativity among rainfall, fertilizer input and nitrogen and phosphorus loss load.

Abstract:Soil nutrient loss not only reduces soil productivity, but also causes non-point source pollution and accelerates the eutrophication of surface water. In order to understand the effects of slope lengths (2m, 4m), vegetation coverage ratios (15%, 30%, 45%, 60%, 90%) on the mechanisms of soil nutrient loss, the research studied the simulated rainfall experiment with the slope gradient of 20°, the rainfall intensity of 2.0 mm/min and the time of producing runoff for about 30 min. The experimental results showed that the runoff coefficient is mainly affected by vegetation coverage ratio.

Abstract:Crop production systems involving the use of high rates of fertilizer application caused significant losses of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) to the environment, resulting in air pollution and water body eutrophication. Quantitating N and P losses and its drivers in crop production systems was critical for optimizing water and fertilizer management measures to mitigate the nutrient losses. However, N and P losses estimation remains highly uncertain in the field at event scale. We here quantify daily N and P losses and its drivers (daily N and P water input, N and P uptake, N and P water surplus, water loss, etc.) in rice-rapeseed growing systems by high-frequency field experiments at event scale in Central China. Results revealed that there were significant trade-off relationships between daily uptake and surplus for N and P during the whole growing stages both for rice and rapeseed. Although it was not significantly related in heading to mature stage for rapeseed, synergies between daily input or surplus and loss were found for N. Redundancy analysis revealed that water input and leaching loss contributed most for N and P loss in rice and rapeseed. The nutrient losses in easier stages should be reduced by postponing the base fertilizer and making it in line with the crop uptake. The study enhanced our knowledge of N and P losses mechanism for crop production systems and provided a scientific basis for optimization of water and fertilizer managements and N and P loss estimation models.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) runoff loss from croplands due to excessive anthropogenic N additions is a principal cause of non-point source water pollution worldwide. Quantitative knowledge of regional-scale N runoff loss from croplands is essential for developing sustainable agricultural N management and efficient water N pollution control strategies. This meta-analysis quantifies N runoff loss rates and identifies the primary factors regulating N runoff loss from uplands (n = 570) and paddy (n = 434) fields in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB). Results indicated that total N (TN) runoff loss rates from uplands and paddy fields consistently increased from upstream to downstream regions. Runoff depth, soil N content and fertilizer addition rate (chemical fertilizer + manure) were the major factors regulating variability of TN runoff loss from uplands, while runoff depth and fertilizer addition rate were the main controls for paddy fields. Multiple regression models incorporating these influencing factors effectively predicted TN runoff loss rates from uplands (calibration: R2 = 0.60, n = 242; validation: R2 = 0.55, n = 104) and paddy fields (calibration: R2 = 0.70, n = 189; validation: R2 = 0.85, n = 82). Models estimated total cropland TN runoff loss load in YRB of 0.54 (95% Cl: 0.23-1.33) Tg, with 0.30 (95% Cl: 0.15-0.56) Tg from uplands and 0.24 (95% Cl: 0.08-0.77) Tg from paddy fields in 2017. Guangxi, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan and Henan provinces within the YRB were identified as cropland TN runoff loss hotspots. Models predicted that TN runoff loss loads from croplands in YRB would decrease by 0.8-13.7% for five scenarios, with higher TN load reductions occurring from scenarios with decreased runoff amounts. Reducing upland TN runoff loss should focus primarily on soil N utilization and runoff management, while reducing N fertilizer addition and runoff provided the most sensitive strategies for paddy fields. Integrated management of water, soil and fertilizer is required to effectively reduce cropland N runoff loss.

Abstract:The objectives of the study were to identify principal hydrological pathways and source areas of N and P losses by multi-scale monitoring and to estimate total nutrient losses from the catchment. An agricultural catchment with rain-fed agriculture and irrigated paddy fields in subtropical China was monitored with regularly sampling, together with intensive sampling during and after rain storms. Regular weekly sampling showed that the N concentrations in the overland flows from the upland and paddy fields were higher than those from the streams, but lower than those in the subsurface waters. The N concentration, on average, was 10.0 mg L-1 in the well and 1.7 mg L-1 in the spring water, the former was 10.2 times as high as that in the stream waters (1.0-1.5 mg L-1). Nitrogen and P in the overland flows originated dominantly in particulate forms from the uplands (over 70%) and in dissolved forms from the paddy fields. Inorganic N and P dominated in the streams and subsurface waters. The intensive sampling allowed us to establish flow-nutrient concentration relationships and to extrapolate nutrient losses during rainstorms without regular sampling. The extrapolation increased the estimated nutrient losses by about 30% to 50%. The average total nutrient losses within three water years were estimated as 21 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1) and 1 kg P ha(-1) yr(-1), accounting for 9.5% and 1.4% of chemical N and P fertilizers applied to the catchment after subtracting the nutrient inputs with irrigation and rainfall. The estimation showed that paddy fields were as important as the uplands in terms of nutrient losses. These results suggest that control of soil erosion and excessive irrigation could be effective to reduce nutrient export through overland flow and subsurface flow. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Evaluating the Impacts of Fertilization and Rainfall on Multi-Form Phosphorus Losses from Agricultural Fields: A Case Study on the North China Plain

Abstract:Excessive fertilizer application increases the risk of eutrophication and agricultural non-point source pollution (ANPS) in rivers near farmland. However, the processes and mechanisms of runoff and phosphorus losses, particularly in the interflow, under various fertilizer treatments and rainfall scenarios are not well understood. This study used orthogonal experimental methods to investigate the combined effects of fertilization schemes and rainfall intensity on multi-form phosphorus runoff losses and to establish statistical relationships and regression models between phosphorus losses and environmental factors in surface runoff and interflow. The results indicated that (1) the optimized fertilization scheme, compared with conventional fertilization, enhanced pak choi (Brassica rapa) growth while reducing phosphorus runoff losses. By reducing phosphorus fertilization by 35.7%, total phosphorus losses decreased by 29.3%, 34.2%, and 29.8% under light, moderate, and heavy rainfall, respectively. (2) Different fertilizer applications and rainfall intensities had varying effects on phosphorus losses through different pathways. Fertilizer application was the primary factor affecting phosphorus losses in surface runoff, while rainfall intensity mainly influenced phosphorus losses through interflow. (3) Surface runoff was the dominant pathway for phosphorus losses from farmland (>92.0%), with particulate phosphorus (>89.4%) being the predominant form. However, under high-intensity and long-duration rainfall, interflow became a significant pathway for phosphorus losses. This study highlights the importance of optimized fertilization in reducing phosphorus losses and improving fertilizer efficiency in agricultural fields. The findings will help develop strategies to mitigate ANPS and soil nutrient losses in the North China Plain.

Compared with FFP, the SSNM treatment reduced total P (TP) by 5%, total dissolved phosphorus (DP) loss by 15% and total bioavailable phosphorus (BAP) loss by 8%.

Abstract:Background Rice paddy wetlands may serve as a nutrient source or sink in agricultural ecosystems. However, the pattern of nutrient loss on a watershed scale is not clear. A year-round on-site observation study based on 6-h intervals was conducted. Rainfall, temperature, runoff nutrient concentrations, and adjacent stream water samples were automatically monitored to uncover the temporal changes in the runoff losses of the predominant nutrient proxies (total N and total P) from a typical rice-planting area (120 ha) in the Yangtze river delta region of China. Results A high total N concentration in the rice-planting area was observed during the rice-planting season; however, significant fluctuation in the total P was evident throughout the year. The Δtotal N (drainage minus stream) parameter showed negative values with a mean of −0.25 mg L −1 , while Δtotal P showed positive values with a mean of 0.06 mg L −1 . The annual average N and P runoff from paddy field were 11.6 kg ha −1 and 1.5 kg ha −1 , respectively. The window phases for the total N loss were mainly concentrated in the rice-growing season. However, the window phase for the total P loss was more dispersive throughout the year. No apparent relationships were found between rainfall and N and P concentrations by self-organizing map analysis. Conclusions The high-resolution monitoring, in this study, suggested that nutrient loss loading rather than nutrient concentration was strongly related to surface runoff Therefore, fertilization before high-intensity rainfall should be avoided to mitigate the nutrient runoff losses and maintain the rice wetland eco-function.

Abstract:Nutrient runoff losses from cropping fields can lead to nonpoint source pollution; however, the level of nutrient export is difficult to evaluate, particularly at the regional scale. This study aimed to establish a novel yet simple approach for estimating total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) runoff losses from regional paddy fields. In this approach, temporal changes of nutrient concentrations in floodwater were coupled with runoff-processing functions in rice (Oryza sativa L.) fields to calculate nutrient runoff losses for three site-specific field experiments. Validation experiments verified the accuracy of this method. The geographic information system technique was used to upscale and visualize the TN and TP runoff losses from field to regional scales. The results indicated that nutrient runoff losses had significant spatio-temporal variation characteristics during rice seasons, which were positively related to fertilizer rate and precipitation. The average runoff losses over five study seasons were 20.21 kg N ha(-1) for TN and 0.76 kg P ha(-1) for TP. Scenario analysis showed that TN and TP losses dropped by 7.64 and 3.0%, respectively, for each 10% reduction of fertilizer input. For alternate wetting and drying water management, the corresponding reduction ratio was 24.7 and 14.0% respectively. Our results suggest that, although both water and fertilizer management can mitigate nutrient runoff losses, the former is significantly more effective.

Abstract:Nitrogen losses in rice paddy fields pose a high risk to surrounding aquatic environment. While the surface N losses have garnered considerable attention in recent years, subsurface flux, including vertical leaching and nearditch lateral seepage, has barely been quantified. To understand how it impacts the N run off, we collected threeyear high-frequency and systematic field observations and adopted a two-dimensional quantitative model coupling water, nitrogen dynamics and crop growth. We quantified the magnitude and dynamics of subsurface N loss during rice growing season. Our results showed that subsurface N loss, reaching 6.2 kg N ha-1 and 4% of total applied N in rice growing seasons, was 2-fold larger than surface N runoff, in which lateral seepage contributed 33%. The driving factors include hydraulic gradients brought by ponded water depth and ditch water level. Based on our study, optimized irrigation management and conservation tillage were priority in mitigating subsurface N loss, with 41% and 32% reduction potential, respectively, and improved ditch-pond system combined with irrigation-drainage management could also be an effective solution. Together, these findings highlight an important role of subsurface flux including lateral seepage, which could be instrumental for future waterquality improvements in rice paddy-ditch landscape.

Abstract:Agricultural non-point source pollution caused by excessive fertilization is a problem in the North China Plain. The experimental site was at a modern high-tech agricultural park in Dezhou City of Shandong Province that is located within the lower Yellow River impact plain. The fertilization, irrigation, and crop management in the modern agricultural park were investigated to determine the proportion of nitrogen and phosphorus loss of the total input. An ecological drainage ditch was constructed in the modern agricultural park in 2016. At the same time, a Doppler flowmeter and a runoff automatic acquisition instrument were installed in the inlet and outlet of the ecological drainage ditch for monitoring the flow of runoff and collecting runoff samples under natural rainfall in 2018 and 2019. The nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment runoff contents were determined in the laboratory in order to calculate the loss of nitrogen and phosphorus from farmland runoff and the nitrogen and phosphorus interception rate of the ecological drainage ditch. The results showed that there were a total of 13 runoff events in 2018 and 2019 and that the average concentration of total nitrogen and phosphorus in farmland runoff was 2.63–18.84 mg·L−1and 0.81–13.14 mg·L−1 in both years combined, respectively. The main forms of nitrogen found in runoff were NO3−-N, and the main form of phosphorus found in runoff was particulate phosphorus. The amount of nitrogen and phosphorus lost through runoff was 2.90% and 5.07%, respectively, of the average nitrogen and phosphorus input from both years combined. Runoff was generated when daily precipitation was above 17.4 mm and daily maximum precipitation intensity was above 5.1 mm·h−1. There was a linear relationship between daily precipitation, daily maximum precipitation intensity, and the amount of runoff after natural rainfall. A linear regression equation was established to predict the amount of runoff in the study area. The results indicated that ecological ditches in the watersheds of modern agricultural parks could be used to intercept nitrogen and phosphorus from farmland runoff effectively.
