Abstract:Electrolyte leakage is a long-term and difficult-to-detect failure mode that can induce an external short circuit (ESC) in the continuous corrosion process. The ESC is considered to exhibit severe failure behavior that can easily lead to thermal runaway (TR) in electric vehicles (EVs). To date, researchers have mainly studied the use of ESC signals for warning systems. Moreover, it is vital to identify the cause of ESCs in advance to avoid TR risk. In this study, the long-term evolution behaviors of battery TR based on EV operating data are examined. TR occurs because an ESC is induced by electrolyte leakage in the battery cell, and the critical characteristics of electrolyte leakage failure are determined. The two main findings of this work concerning the maximum voltage difference and the external resistance variation are that the maximum voltage difference is linearly correlated with the cycle number, and the external resistance gradually decreases with increasing electrolyte leakage. In addition, the alarm threshold of the external resistance is determined by considering the balance current of the battery management system (BMS). Therefore, an online detection method using battery information transferred from a BMS is proposed. Based on experimental and real-life EV results, the critical characteristics of electrolyte leakage and the effectiveness of our method for identifying electrolyte leakage are verified.
