Abstract:As an important inverse imaging problem in diffraction optics, Fourier phase retrieval aims at estimating the latent image of the target object only from the magnitude of its Fourier measurement. Although in real applications alternating methods are widely-used for Fourier phase retrieval considering the constraints in the object and Fourier domains, they need a lot of initial guesses and iterations to achieve reasonable results. In this paper, we show that a proper sensor mask directly attached to the Fourier magnitude can improve the efficiency of the iterative phase retrieval algorithms, such as alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Furthermore, we refer to the learning-based method to determine the sensor mask according to the Fourier measurement, and unrolled ADMM is used for phase retrieval. Numerical results show that our method outperforms other existing methods for the Fourier phase retrieval problem.
Large-scale Phase Retrieval Method for Wavefront Reconstruction with Multi-Stage Random Phase Modulation

Abstract:Phase retrieval method is popularly applied in wavefront sensing and quantitative phase imaging, while the stagnation problem in phase retrieval could seriously affect the accuracy and efficiency of the largescale wavefront reconstruction. In this paper, we proposed an arbitrary complex-valued reconstruction method with multi-stage random phase modulation to eliminate the stagnation problem. The random phase modulation maximum breaks any symmetry and enriches information on diffraction patterns. The multistage random phase modulation is achieved by rotating structured light illumination through row-to-column conversion, which not only provides faster convergence speed but also circumvents resampling errors during the calculation. Besides, without an accurate model of illumination function and prior information of under-test wavefront, the arbitrary complex wavefront and the illumination function are both accurately reconstructed, simultaneously. We further demonstrate that our method is effective for the vortex phase plate measurement without introducing extra errors.

Abstract:As a computational imaging method, phase retrieval has wide applications in image reconstruction, wavefront detection, image encryption, etc. It is an image-based wavefront sensing technique and compared with some other traditional measurement methods such as interferometry, phase retrieval has the advantages of easy operation, high accuracy and strong adaptability to the environment. Conventional phase retrieval algorithms, such as the Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm, retrieve wavefront by iterative calculation. But limited by finite information of the captured diffractive light filed, the calculation process is easy to fall into local minimum value and stagnation occurs in practical, making it unable to converge to the right wavefront. In this paper, in order to improve this phenomenon, a phase retrieval method combined with the zone plate is proposed in this paper. In this method, zone plates are added into the traditional iterative phase retrieval algorithm to modulate the incident wavefront and combined with the multi-focus property, it can collect more effective information about the wavefront in a single optical intensity distribution image and realize a better wavefront reconstruction result. Simulation results indicate that by taking zone plates into calculation, more effective reconstruction results can be acquired. On the one hand, the recovery residual is smaller compared with conventional lens. On the other, although all of these methods reach to a stagnation, zone-plate-based methods are more efficient to get a better result.

Abstract:This paper provides a contemporary overview of phase retrieval problem with PhaseLift algorithm and summarizes theoretical results which have been derived during the past few years. Based on the lifting technique, the phase retrieval problem can be transformed into the low rank matrix recovery problem and then be solved by convex programming known as PhaseLift. Thus, stable guarantees for such problem have been gradually established for measurements sampled from sufficiently random distribution, for instance, the standard normal distribution. Further, exact recovery results have also been set up for masked Fourier measurements which are closely related to practical applications.

Abstract:Axial error arises from the error inherent in man-made measurement of distance between object and detector for in-line holography, resulting in image blurring, defocusing and low reconstruction quality. Nevertheless, existing methods for autofocusing and axial correction requires computing parameters with several distances neighboring current distance, which incorporates additional loops into the iterative algorithms. In this study, we propose an approach that updates diffraction distance directly based on statistical information of reconstructed object, thus eliminating the need for additional loops and reducing reconstruction time. Besides, our methods could achieve high reconstruction accuracy, while maintaining high convergence rate, stability and wide initialization space. The effectiveness of our proposed method has been validated through both simulation and experiments.

Abstract:An improved iterative phase retrieval algorithm is put forward, which makes use of intensity information in several planes, and divides the retrieval process into two steps: profile retrieval and detail retrieval. First the input plane and other three far diffraction planes are needed to retrieve the profile of phase distribution, then the phase detail is available in a similar way. The phase distribution of any one dimensional optical field, including very complicated ones, can be successfully retrieved with this algorithm, and the accuracy of retrieval is greatly enhanced. This algorithm is also very robust. It has convergence independent on the initial phase, and high stability towards additive noise, which are both confirmed by simulations.

Abstract:Phase retrieval is an important research topic in the optics field. It is aimed to reconstruct the wave-front from the intensity of the far-field diffracted field. To deal with the local stagnation of conventional iterative Fourier based algorithms, an interesting recent approach formulates the phase retrieval problem as a tractable relaxation (called PhaseCut). Despite its powerful global capability, the operation of recasting a vector problem into a matrix problem leads to higher computational cost, which limits its use in far-field patterns with high resolution. In this paper, we develop an extrapolative alternating projection algorithm to cope with the reconstruction of high-resolution phase pattern. The algorithm starts with a low-resolution phase estimation solved by PhaseCut from the far-field amplitudes in the low frequency range, and then refines the initial estimation by an extrapolative iterative projection method, which has a low computational complexity. The iterative process is divided into various periods where the inputs of the algorithm (far-field amplitudes) are extrapolated to include more high frequency information. The main contribution is that the algorithm can quickly converge to the globally optimal and high-resolution solution with a high probability. We verified the validity of the algorithm with various numerical simulations.

Abstract:Many phase retrieval algorithms are used for the designing process of diffractive optical element (DOE). To design a DOE, it is almost the occasions to recovery phase distribution on the micro-optics element when the amplitude distribution of inputting plane and outputting plane has been known. Generally, there are two kinds of strategies to resolve phase retrieval problems, namely iterative method and try-and error method. There are a lot of famous algorithms have been successful used in this field, such as Gerchberg and Saxton (GS), ST, Input-Output, Yang and Gu (YG) etc. In this paper, a novel algorithm is brought forward. The phase on DOE is considered as the superposition of a serial of sinusoidal curves. Randomfly, a concrete sinusoidal phase disturbance with definite frequency and amplitude is selected. Correspondent disturbance complex amplitude distribution on image plane can be considered as transformation result of the disturbance phase by the optical system. Then, new complex amplitude on image plane can be calculated as the convolution of its original one and the disturbance one. By Simulated Annealing algorithm, the optimal frequency and amplitude for the sinusoidal phase disturbance are searched. Gradually, when enough sinusoidal phase disturbances are searched, the phase of DOE will approximate to its global optimum solution. At last, for the optimum phase solution, phase smoothing method is used to relieve jump discontinuity.

Abstract:In multi-plane phase retrieval imaging, the accuracy and efficiency of phase retrieval algorithm are usually mutually restrictive. Specifically, deterministic algorithms struggle to achieve sufficient accuracy, while iterative algorithms consume excessive time, thereby limiting their practical application. To address this issue, we propose a deterministic-iterative integrated phase retrieval algorithm, that is, an approximate phase, which could be quickly obtained by the deterministic algorithm, is imported as an initial value into the iterative algorithm to retrieve more accurate result efficiently. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this algorithm, we simulate its performance under various iterations and diffraction distances. Additionally, experiments are conducted using a pure-phase USAF1951 target and fixed mouse fibroblasts to verify its feasibility, high accuracy, and rapid iterative convergence speed. Integrating the deterministic and iterative algorithms, this method offers a novel approach for enhancing phase retrieval.

Abstract:It is well known that the phase contains more important information about the field in comparison with the amplitude. Therefore the imaging of phase is encountered in many branches of modern science and engineering. Direct measurement of the phase is easy in the long wavelength regime of the electromagnetic spectrum, but is difficult in the short regime such as the visible light due to the limited bandwidth of imaging sensors. One must employ computational techniques to extract the phase from the captured intensity. So far many methods have been proposed for this task. These algorithms can be basically classified into three categories: Holography, deterministic algorithms such as the transport of intensity equation, and iterative algorithms such as the Gerchberg-Saxton-Fienup-type algorithm. Each of these algorithms has its own advantages and disadvantages. This paper mainly focuses on the our previous works on iterative phase retrieval techniques, and their applications in the calculation of computer-generated holograms, microscopic imaging, and optical signal processing.

Abstract:Phase retrieval technique is regarded as one of the most significant tools to solve optical inverse problems. Several phase retrieval algorithms are discussed in this review. The occurrence of ill-posed conditions often makes the calculation difficult. As a synthesis, the multiple-image phase retrieval technology is invented to obtain more accurate convergence result in iterative computation. The multiple-input retrieval scheme can attach new constraints on convergence as a new limitation. As an indirect measuring method, it will make it possible to reconstruct the distribution of intensity and phase in an imaging or measurement system, where data processing is executed by computer. Moreover, the retrieval method has been applied for image encryption successfully. Finally, the development and application of the iterative phase retrieval are overviewed. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Parameters mismatching between the real optical system and phase retrieval model undermines wavefront reconstruction accuracy. The three-dimensional intensity position is corrected in phase retrieval, which is traditionally separated from lateral position correction and axial position correction. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional intensity position correction method for phase diverse phase retrieval with the cross-iteration nonlinear optimization strategy. The intensity position is optimized via the coarse optimization method at first, then the intensity position is cross-optimized in the iterative wavefront reconstruction process with the exact optimization method. The analytic gradients about the three-dimensional intensity position are derived. The cross-iteration optimization strategy avoids the interference between the incomplete position correction and wavefront reconstruction during the iterative process. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed method are verified both numerically and experimentally. The proposed method achieves robust and accurate intensity position correction and wavefront reconstruction, which is available for wavefront measurement and phase imaging.

Abstract:Abstract In the context of diffractive optics, phase retrieval is a heavily investigated process of recreating an entire complex electric field from partial amplitude-only information through iterative algorithms. However, existing methods can fall into local minima during reconstructions or struggle to recover unusual and novel electric field distributions. We present a numerical method based on a global-optimization genetic algorithm that reconstructs non-trivial electric field distributions from single diffracted intensity distributions. Diffraction and propagation of the optical fields over arbitrary distances is modeled through implementation of the angular spectrum technique. Additionally, a coherently-locked laser array system is used as an experimental case-study demonstrating 0.09 π phase reconstruction accuracy of initial laser parameters from single intensity images.

Abstract:This letter proposes an iteration-free-phase retrieval method for directive radiators based on field amplitudes on two closely separated observation planes. Due to the small separation, local optimization suffers from converging to local minima, and global optimization consumes long CPU time. In the proposed method, the Huygens' principle and the image theory are applied on the first observation plane, and the complex-valued field quantities on the two observation planes are related through the radiation matrix. The radiation matrix is then scaled by the field amplitudes on the two observation planes. It is shown that, if the phase difference between the two observation planes is relatively uniform, an eigenvector of the scaled radiation matrix constitutes a solution to the phase retrieval problem, which achieves iteration-free-phase retrieval. Abstract:Study of phase retrieval technology is quite meaningful, for its wide applications related to many domains, such as adaptive optics, detection of laser quality, precise measurement of optical surface, and so on. Here a hybrid iterative phase retrieval algorithm is proposed, based on fusion of the intensity information in three defocused planes. First the conjugate gradient algorithm is adapted to achieve a coarse solution of phase distribution in the input plane; then the iterative angular spectrum method is applied in succession for better retrieval result. This algorithm is still applicable even when the exact shape and size of the aperture in the input plane are unknown. Moreover, this algorithm always exhibits good convergence, i.e., the retrieved results are insensitive to the chosen positions of the three defocused planes and the initial guess of complex amplitude in the input plane, which has been proved by both simulations and further experiments.

Abstract:Phase retrieval has been an attractive but difficult problem rising from physical science, and there has been a gap between state-of-the-art theoretical convergence analyses and the corresponding efficient retrieval methods. Firstly, these analyses all assume that the sensing vectors and the iterative updates are independent, which only fits the ideal model with infinite measurements but not the reality, where data are limited and have to be reused. Secondly, the empirical results of some efficient methods, such as the randomized Kaczmarz method, show linear convergence, which is beyond existing theoretical explanations considering its randomness and reuse of data. In this work, we study for the first time, without the independence assumption, the convergence behavior of the randomized Kaczmarz method for phase retrieval. Specifically, beginning from taking expectation of the squared estimation error with respect to the index of measurement by fixing the sensing vector and the error in the previous step, we discard the independence assumption, rigorously derive the upper and lower bounds of the reduction of the mean squared error, and prove the linear convergence. This work fills the gap between a fast converging algorithm and its theoretical understanding. The proposed methodology may contribute to the study of other iterative algorithms for phase retrieval and other problems in the broad area of signal processing and machine learning.

Abstract:In coherent diffraction imaging, modulus is recorded and phase is lost. Phase retrieval is to recover the lost phase from the recorded modulus. Iterative Fourier algorittun (IFA) solves this problem by imposing modulus constraints to make the phase converge. Here we show a modulus angle joint phase retrieval method. When both amplitude and phase modulation are applied, the angle relationship, which denotes the Fourier phase difference, can be exactly derived from the measured intensities. Based on this angle relationship, a new form of IFA called angle iteration is developed, which exhibits a faster but unstable convergence compared with tradition IFA (modulus iteration). By modulus-angle combined iteration, the proposed method reaches a quick and stable convergence. With the same intensity measurements, it drops nearly 80% the phase retrieval errors by traditional IFA but costs the same CPU time. This work reveals the fact that changing the constraint format would improve the original iteration process.
